Meet you at the Clarion??
August 1-3, 2014
Clarion Inn, 1399 Bench Road,
Pocatello, Idaho 83201
208-237-1400
I would like to begin by sharing a quote from Connie Hodson. Connie wrote this after we
had the regional training in Utah last month. Many others shared her same sentiment and
were truly pleased by the content as well as the format of these regional trainings.
“We have been members since 1998. We have served in all of the positions and
attended many conventions. By far this was the best that have ever attended. I asked
my husband about it on the way home. His comment was it was simple. My thought
was I received what I went for. Thank you for all of the efforts.” Dick and Connie
Hodson
In order to continue with the same spirit and making sure you get the information you came
for there are many people putting in great efforts to make this convention the BEST one
ever! (Thank you Pocatello club for your efforts and your hospitality!) The Board of
Trustees, planning committee and your fellow members are excited to have you join us for
this year’s Annual Convention. The Pocatello club has been working hard to provide a fun,
relevant agenda along with many activities to keep your family members busy while you
are learning all things to better your clubs and your Kiwanis knowledge. Annual
Convention is also a great time to learn from others, build relationships, and get ideas about
fundraisers and service projects that help build stronger clubs.
Also, we will be having the House of Delegates on Saturday afternoon. This is where you
see the dynamic governing that happens at the district level, which YOU may be a part of.
Make sure your club assigns who will represent them in the House of Delegates and be sure
to get the enclosed form back to me no later than July 24th, 2014. You can scan and email it
to [email protected] or mail it to:
Kelly Ryan Rush
5000 S Deselm Way
Boise ID 83716
Registration is ready and you can either fill out the form in this Kiwanian or go to the
District website uikiwanis.org. Thanks Gordon for pulling all of this together!
I truly can’t wait to see all of you there!
All my best,
Kelly Ryan Rush

KIWANIS OBJECTS
The six permanent Objects of
Kiwanis International were
approved by Kiwanis club
delegates at the 1924 Kiwanis
International Convention in
Denver, Colorado. Through
the decades, they have
remained unchanged.
● To give primacy to the
human and spiritual rather
than to the material values
of life.
● To encourage the daily
living of the Golden Rule
in all human relationships.
● To promote the adoption
and the application of
higher social, business and
professional standards.
● To develop, by precept and
example, a more
intelligent, aggressive and
serviceable citizenship.

● To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a
practical means to form enduring
friendships, to render altruistic service
and to build better communities.
● To cooperate in creating and maintaining
that sound public opinion and high
idealism which make possible the
increase of righteousness, justice,
patriotism and goodwill.
Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis International club, no matter where in the world it’s located. Kiwanis members stage nearly
150,000 service projects, devote more than 6 million hours of service and raise nearly US$100 million every year for communities,
families and projects. Key Club members pitch in 12 million hours of service each year, and CKI members another 500,000 hours of
service! Aktion Club members donate another 92,000 hours of service every year. Add it all up, and that’s more than 18 million hours
of service every year!
PAGE 3
AN INTROSPECTIVE LOOK AT KIWANIS By Revis Turner, Governor-Elect
As a college counselor, I am always
interested in differences of personality traits
and the impact on our ability to function in
social and business situations. The e-zine
article, “Interview Tips for Introverts,”
caught my eye. Since I am a diagnosed
introvert, I am aware, as the article suggests,
that we have more difficulty with job
interviews than most people who have
extrovert traits. When it comes to job
interview components, most introverts could live without
making small talk, being the center of attention, or tooting your
own horn. These bring special challenges; yet, using an
introvert’s strength and tendencies to one’s advantage is a
strategy worth exploring. The bottom line, according to most
career counselors, is that an introvert’s path to success is
dependent on developing the discipline to “practice, practice,
practice.” (M.O. Laney, The Introvert Advantage: How to
Thrive in an Extrovert World.)
How does this apply to the Utah-Idaho Kiwanis District?
1. Kiwanis is a global organization, yet our membership is lower
than it was in the previous decade. Perhaps, we have taken on
introvert traits that have overshadowed our essential mission
diminishing our ability to “toot our own horn” and make public
our good deeds.
We must be resolved to strengthen our focus on our mission:
“Serving the Children of the World.” The clubs I have visited in
the last several weeks are doing wonderful things for children in
our communities. I’ve found that Utah-Idaho clubs are very
responsible at listening and responding to the needs of the
communities. We must be intentional about “tooting our horn,”
making a practice of informing the public of the mission of serving children in our home communities, as well as our global
concern for children.
2. One observation I would make is that Kiwanians are very creative when volunteering. We put a lot of good ideas into
practice. Instead of letting our communities know about our good deeds, the introvert trait of humility kicks in. Our mission
to “Serve the Children” is a proud legacy and Kiwanians work hard at making this a premier facet of our efforts.
We must be resolved to get the good news of our hard work and good deeds to the community. Every club should have a
communications/publicity leader or committee to practice sharing the wonderful community spirit that envelops our local
organizations.
3. Reflective thinking is a strength of an introvert. That is, an introvert will often think over thoughts before talking in
contrast to extroverts who talk in order to think. Detail work and planning are introvert strengths. Yet, this requires
intentional practice leading to ideas and projects that are well done.
We must be resolved to place the creative and thoughtful Kiwanians in positions where they can give leadership to our clubs
and projects. We must resolve to train them and provide resources that will enhance their abilities to further the mission of
Kiwanis.
4. Finally, introverts are often characterized by the strength and depth of relationships they develop. When Kiwanians
practice the art of empathy and caring, we put a spotlight on the purpose of our clubs. This provides a window into the spirit
of Kiwanis and magnifies the reason why people from diverse backgrounds can be united around common purposes.
We must be resolved to provide the opportunity to be welcoming clubs, to grow with comradeship of its members.
As Laney suggests, this takes, “Practice, Practice, Practice.” Utah-Idaho Kiwanis Clubs have amazing opportunities to use the
strengths and abilities of a diverse population to become a global club by growing a stronger mission to serve the children of
the world.

Europe was formed, representing Kiwanians in 11

and a Constitution was approved. George F. Hixson was elected to the first of his two terms as President of the National

Hamilton, Ontario, was organized on November 1.
1919 -- Kiwanis declared its independence in Birmingham, Alabama. In a wave of check writing, attendees raised $17,500 in

DISTRICT COMMUNICATIONS IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
Fellow Kiwanians in the Utah – Idaho District,
With the start of this Kiwanis year we began our District Communications
Improvement Project. The project includes using the e-mail solution that Constant
Contact offers to help improve our communications in the District.
The District has desired to provide better and timelier communication to the
membership about upcoming Local, Division, and District events, and any other
circumstances that would require quick communication. Also, to have a vehicle that is
available to the clubs to use as a way to communicate the things they are doing that
others in the District and area could participate in.
The sooner everyone in the District who wants to receive information directly
from the District is in Constant Contact, the sooner it will become a valuable tool for
everyone in the District to use. However, before members e-mail addresses can be
entered into Constant Contact they need to opt-in. Opting in can be done on a club
basis by filling out the form included in this issue of the U & I Kiwanian or
Individually by going online to the District Website (www.uikiwanis.org) and clicking
on the link on the homepage that says: “Click Here to Sign-up to Stay in Touch with
the Utah - Idaho Kiwanis District by E-mail”
To make this an effective tool for everyone in the District, each Club is being
asked to provide a list of those members who have e-mail addresses and who want to
receive e-mail communication through it. To date about 25% of the District
Membership is in Constant Contact. Those clubs haven’t not yet submitted your lists,
please do so as soon as possible.
The lists can be submitted to either Kelly Ryan Rush or myself. When we get
them, we will enter them into Constant Contact.
The form to use to gather the information that will go into constant contact is
included in this issue (on Page 22), and can be obtained on the District Website or by
Contacting your Lt . Governor, Kelly Ryan Rush or Gordon Lewis. Note that each
page needs to include the club name, and for each person desiring to receive e-mails
through Constant Contact we need: their name, e-mail address, and to indicate that
they are opting in to receive these e-mails.
Thanks for your support, Yours in Service

NEW LOGO AND GRAPHICS LEARNING CENTER LAUNCHES
The Kiwanis logo stands for nearly 100 years of community service. To do its
job - communicating Kiwanis’ message to the world—the logo needs to be used the
right way. Kiwanis has set up the Logo and Graphics Learning Center at

use for your project.
Logos and graphics are divided into categories: Clubs, Programs, Events and
Campaigns. Each page at the learning center displays the variations and types of logos
available for download. Use the help button to find out which logo is right for your
type of project, whether it will appear on paper, on an item like a sign or T-shirt or on

KIWANIS FAMILY CELEBRATES
THE ELIMINATE PROJECT PROGRESS
Collectively, the Kiwanis family and
the U.S. Fund for UNICEF have raised
more than US$51.9 million in cash and
pledges as of April 29, 2014—nearly
halfway to our US$110 million goal.
These funds will save or protect at
least 28.8 million women and their
future babies from maternal and
neonatal tetanus.
With less than 15 months left in The
Eliminate Project, each day counts. “As our gift to the world and in celebration of 100
years of Kiwanis, we have a very practical way to show our dedication to children
through the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus,” said Illinois-Eastern Iowa
District Coordinator John Vanderheyden.
Visit www.TheEliminateProject.org/WWRD to see more highlights from Worldwide
Report Day, including a new thank you message from Kenya [video], recommended
fundraisers and words of wisdom from district teams.
ELIMINATE PROJECT UPDATE
Funding from Utah-Idaho Kiwanis Clubs are providing needed vaccine for Kenya &
Haiti.
Through The Eliminate Project, the Kiwanis family will forever change the world.
The campaign will raise US$110 million to save or protect millions of women and
their future babies from maternal and neonatal tetanus—and protect the connection
that this deadly disease destroys.
At the beginning of April, a Kiwanis International and U.S. Fund for UNICEF
delegation made a special visit to Haiti to see The Eliminate Project in action. Nearly
50 percent of tetanus cases in the Caribbean occur in Haiti. The island country carried
out a nationwide campaign against maternal and neonatal tetanus, aiming to immunize
nearly 1.5 million women of reproductive age, in April.
Less than two weeks earlier (in late March), a different Kiwanis International and
U.S. Fund for UNICEF delegation visited Kenya on behalf of The Eliminate Project.
Located in the Eastern and Southern African Region, Kenya is one of only two
countries (Kenya and Madagascar) in the region that has yet to achieve maternal and
neonatal tetanus elimination.
Find a small glimpse of what the groups experienced in Haiti and Kenya on the
following website-- https://www.facebook.com/TheEliminateProject/photos_albums
— from smiling moms and babies to bright colors and breathtaking scenery. See how
UNICEF and Kiwanis are, again, making a difference in the lives of countless
families around the world.

FOUNDATION UNVEILS NEW PROGRAM FOR LOYAL
DONORS
Many members of the Kiwanis International Foundation have been supporters for
years. To honor that consistent commitment, our foundation has started a new donor
recognition program, the Kiwanis Loyalty Society.
It’s simple. When you make a gift for two consecutive years, you automatically
become a member. And benefits begin after five years. There are three Kiwanis
Loyalty Society levels:
• Blue, 5–9 years of consecutive giving
• Silver, 10–24 years of consecutive giving
• Gold, 25 or more years of consecutive giving
It’s our foundation’s way of thanking you for your continued support on behalf of all
of the children whose lives we have impacted together. Learn more about the Kiwanis
Loyalty Society or contact Jereme Grinslade, alumni and annual fund administrator, at
+1-317-217-6157 (U.S. and Canada) or [email protected].

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT KIWANIS?
Why did you become a Kiwanian, was it because your father or grandfather was
a member? Was it because you saw the impact that clubs have in schools? Think
about what you enjoy about your Kiwanis experience. Why do you remain committed
to serving the children of the world?
Now, consider what would make your experience better. Think about your
club's aspirations and what it would take to reach them. Find unmet service needs in
your community and ponder how even more hearts and hands working together could
solve them. Try a new fundraiser. Make your community an even better place.
Use The Formula to strengthen the future of your club, your community and the
Kiwanis family. Start now.

This year our annual golf tournament funds are going for a great cause that is
near and dear to the heart of Kiwanis. Kiwanis International and UNICEF have
joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals
the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each
year. The effects of the disease are excruciating – tiny newborns suffer repeated,
painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.
To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their
future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage,
transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million – and
the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. It only
takes 3 shots at 60¢ a shot to save the life of the mother and unborn baby. You can
help us reach this goal with your support.
Golfing &/or dinner is still an activity for Kiwanis members & their guests. It
is still a fun, NON-serious fellowshipping activity to encourage interaction among
fellow Kiwanians and potential members. Bring your children, a friend or an
associate. Even if you don’t golf, or if your potential member doesn’t, still try to
come to the dinner.
The entry fee & charges can be paid the day of the event. Because it is difficult
to reorganize the whole pairing system if even 1 golfer cancels at the last minute,
please try to have true commitments to this outing and call or email me with the
names of your golfers ASAP.
A tee-box can be sponsored for $75. Tee-box plus a green is $125. A
professional 18”x24” sign with logo will be placed at each sponsored location. If you
wish to be a new sponsor, we need adequate time to prepare your sign. (see
attachment)
You can support the 31st annual “Golf-N-Grub” Kiwanis Charity Golf Tournament in
the following 3 ways:
1. Play Golf and Eat Lunch (3 options)
* Golf, Cart, Drinks, Treats, Lunch == $65
Use Golf Pass ================ $39
Same without Lunch =========== $53
* Lunch only, no golf =========== $12

CHANGE A STUDENT’S LIFE WITH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
Did you know that your sponsored CKI members could have a life-changing opportunity this July? That epic event is CKI’s
Leadership Academy.
For six days, CKI members from all over North America will meet at Waycross Camp and Conference Center in Morgantown,
Indiana, for the CKI Leadership Academy (http://www.circlek.org/leadershipacademy). There, they’ll learn about and develop
skills in servant leadership. From July 27–August 1, 2014, students will trade their social media for a focus on real human
interaction and service.
Encourage students to apply online (http://www.circlek.org/leadershipacademy) for the CKI Leadership Academy before the
July 7 deadline. And consider helping to pay their US$195 registration fee, which includes food, lodging and leadership
activities. A better life is only six days away.
