WE CAN’T CHANGE THE PAST.
WE HOPE WE CAN CHANGE THE FUTURE.
WE WORK IN THE PRESENT. By John Brown, 2012 - 2013 Utah - Idaho District Governor
Everything we do should be based on the above. The past is gone. We can learn from
it, but we cannot change it. Declining attendance at this past Mid Year Conferences tells us
that it is not working; therefore for this year we canceled it. It is my recommendation that for
the year 2014 we cancel Mid Year and return to area training for CLE and Lieutenant
Governors. This is only a recommendation, as Jim Spinelli will be Governor in that year and
it is his and the District Board’s decision.
In recent memory attendance at District Convention have had bad years and
acceptable years -- but not good years. We want to make District Convention the go-to event
in the Utah – Idaho District year. My board and I will work to make this upcoming District
Convention something that the members will want to come to and something they will
remember and look forward to each year.
In the past we have had a difficult time filling the position of District Governor.
Seldom was there actually a contested ballot. In my case, I was appointed to fill the position
of Governor-Elect. Thus, I have proposed two by-laws changes. The first will add the
position of Vice-Governor, who will be third in line for the position of Governor of the
Utah-Idaho District.
The second is a district dues increase of $10 per member per year. Both of these
proposals were voted on and approved by the district board to be placed on the ballot for a
vote of the House of Delegates.
If you have feelings either for or against these by-law changes, your club needs to
send voting delegates to this year’s District Convention. My hope is that by passing these
by-law changes at this year’s convention we will see a positive effect on our election process
for governor and increase our attendance at our annual Convention.
District Convention is each Kiwanis Club’s chance to let its voice be heard through
the ability to vote for or against by-law changes.
Please read the article that addresses these by-law changes in this issue of the U & I
Kiwanian.
Other issues that affect our district’s future are sustaining our current clubs and
building new clubs. I am asking each member of our Kiwanis family to take a critical look at
your club and determine whether or not your club is healthy. I mean by that: Do you look
forward to going to meetings? Do you have good speakers? If you were a new member
would you feel welcome?
If some or all of the things I have just mentioned do not pertain to your club, then your
club may be in trouble, acknowledged or not. If you feel your club needs help, please have
your club President or Secretary contact your division Lieutenant Governor and schedule a
meeting with him. I am still looking for a Lieutenant Governor for Division 7. The clubs in
that division are Cedar City, Santa Clara, and St. George.
There are clubs and divisions that show membership increases. Please see the article
entitled:
Utah-Idaho District of Kiwanis Divisions and Clubs that
Show Positive Membership Recruitment as of April 30, 2013
We are doing well with our Eliminate Project thanks to the efforts of Revis Turner, the
District Coordinator for Eliminate. I cannot thank Revis enough for the time and effort he
has put into this worthwhile project.
The District is going to compile a cookbook made up of recipes submitted by Kiwanis
members and friends of Kiwanis for sale at the District Convention.
Please see the article entitled:
U and I Kan Kook
I thank you for all that you do for Kiwanis, our district and your clubs.

NEXT STEPS FOR SENIORS
Show Key Club and CKI members that graduation doesn’t mean the end of their Kiwanis-family
experience. Connect them with the next step in the Kiwanis family, whether it’s CKI for future
college students or Kiwanis-club membership for young adults entering the workforce. And
encourage them to sign up for the Key Club and CKI alumni networks, where they can stay in touch
with their friends, with the SLP they love—and with Kiwanis.
Learn more about the Key Club and CKI alumni networks at keyclub.org/alumni and

UTAH-IDAHO DISTRICT OF KIWANIS
DIVISIONS AND CLUBS
THAT SHOW POSITIVE MEMBERSHIP
RECRUITMENT
AS OF APRIL 30, 2013
I would like to thank all of the clubs in our district for all
the wonderful things you do for children. “Many hands make
light work” is a thought that we need to embrace as a district.
The more Kiwanis members we have, the easier it is for our
Kiwanis clubs to do all of the things we want and need to do.
The divisions and clubs listed below are working hard to
increase our membership and thus increase our ability to do
more for children.
We do have divisions and clubs that are gaining members;
that proves that we can buck the trend of losing members in our
district.
Division 2, Lieutenant Governor William “Bill” Mullins :
Bonneville Kiwanis Club, +3 members, Tooele Kiwanis Club,
+3;
Division 4, Lieutenant Governor Jim Terry: Bannock -
Pocatello Kiwanis Club, +4; Pocatello Kiwanis Club, +5.
Individual clubs with positive membership growth in
Idaho are: Burley, +1; Rupert, +1; Capitol City Boise, +7;
Eagle, +3; Emmett +1.
Individual clubs with positive membership growth in
Utah are: Springville,+1, Tremonton, +4; Heber Valley, +1,
Park City, +1, Sugar House Salt Lake City, +1; West Valley Salt
Lake City, +1.
The only club in Oregon, Ontario +5.
It is possible to increase your clubs’ membership, just look at
the clubs listed above.
Well done all of you who have increased the membership in
your Kiwanis Clubs’.
John Brown,
Governor 2012 - 2013
UTAH – IDAHO DISTRICT BY-LAW CHANGES
DISTRICT CONVENTION AUGUST 17, 2013
The House of Delegates will be asked to vote on or ratify
changes to the Utah – Idaho District By-Laws during our
District Convention in August 2013.
Lieutenant Governor of Division 6, Larry Hunter, has
been working on bringing our by-laws into compliance with
changes made to the Kiwanis International By-Laws at the 2012
Kiwanis International Convention. We will be asked to ratify
those changes.
The District Board and I have asked for the addition of
the position of Vice-Governor which needs to be ratified. We
asked for this change to make the election of Governor a
smoother process, similar to what many of our Kiwanis Clubs
already have. The Vice-Governor would be third in line and,
once elected, would be the only candidate for Governor-Elect
and then the only candidate for Governor.
The District Board and I are asking for a District dues
increase of $10 per member per year. This would bring the total
District dues to $30 per person per year. The highest district
dues paid by a North American district are $58.80. The average
district dues are $30.28, and the median is $30. The additional
money raised by the dues increase will be used to fund District
Convention. This will reduce registration fees, allow for better
speakers and entertainment and help offset food costs. The dues
increase will also be used to fund a stipend for the new position
of Vice-Governor.
John Brown,
Governor 2012 - 2013

The Kiwanis International Foundation recommended that all Kiwanis Club
donate at least $6 per member this fiscal year. Our Utah-Idaho District at last year's
annual convention passed a resolution at all clubs in our district consider donating at
least $6 per member to both the Kiwanis International Foundation and our Utah-
Idaho Foundation during this fiscal year. Lt. Governors whose Division contribute at
least $5 per member to the KIF annual club gift campaign will be recognized by the
International Foundation.
Kiwanis Districts that donate at least $5 per member to the annual club gift campaign this year will receive $5,000.00
from the International Foundation to be used as matching scholarships for their Circle K and Key Clubs. For each of the last
several years our Utah-Idaho District has received $5,000 from the KIF to use as matching scholarships. A few of those years
we led all Kiwanis Districts on a per member basis by contributing more than $6.00 per member from our district.
Our Utah-Idaho District is lagging behind in the amount donated to the annual club gift campaign as of this date last
year. We need help in at least three ways: 1) Clubs that have not as yet donated to the annual club gift campaign, will you
please send in $6 per member contribution to the Kiwanis International Foundation to arrive prior to September 30th. 2)
Clubs that have donated less than $5 or $6 per member, will you consider sending in a second gift. 3) Individual Kiwanians
can make a personal contribution to KIF's annual club gift campaign in the name of their club; a few past U-I District
Governors have done so in the past and again this year.
Thanks for your help, Sincerely, LaMar Anderson, district CKI chairman

add the move of the Kiwanis Club of Emmett from Division 9 to
Division 6. Seconded by Larry Hunter. Vote was unanimous.
Financials were not presented.
Clubs who have not paid their dues and are under a
Charter Suspend Notice: Div 1 Pleasant Grove and Price; Div 2
South Salt Lake Valley; Div 6 Meridian; Div 7 Santa Clara; Div
8 Midvale/Fort Union. Wasatch-Roy/Riverdale had their
Charter Revoked due to non-payment of dues.
Heber Valley Kiwanis has voted to close, but are trying to
keep the club open. John Brown will visit them when they meet.
Provo Golden K is closing on September 30, 2013.
John Brown stated that we need to turn around the diminishing membership. Build new clubs in the areas that have closed
clubs in the past. Lt. Governors need to work with clubs who are having trouble – John will meet with them, too.
Lt. Governor Reports:
Div 2 – Bill Mullins – Bonneville has a decent group. Capitol Hill is having trouble getting people to run for office.
Clearfield has a couple of new members, but need to continue building up their club. Layton has two members that continue to
do a yearly exchange of President and Secretary; they have been small for about 10 years, but support 3 Key Clubs. South
Salt Lake Valley was great, but has lost many members. The members just need to bring prospective members to rebuild their
club. Tooele has many members who are bringing new members. This division has been working on Membership Growth
since Bob Dempsay said +1 and he was distinguished his year.
Div 1 – Bob Baker – Orem is working on an ELIMINATE Project. They are OK and keeping their membership up.
Price doesn't have women yet and if you wear a tie to visit their meeting, they will cut it off. Orem Golden K has Ralph
Benson to keep it a tight club. Pleasant Grove has lots of activity, but membership fluctuates. When a member passed away,
they asked in lieu of flowers send money to ELIMINATE. Saratoga Springs' membership is down, but they are working on
getting a new Key Club.
Div 8 – Newell Johnson – Heber Valley might close. Midvale/Fort Union is struggling, but Janet Flinders visited and
brought training manuals for the new president and secretary. Park City is not meeting much, but is doing service. Salt Lake
City is holding its own with great speakers. They need better attendance. Lunch is $19.00 + dues. They have a fund-raiser:
1st Annual Daddy-Daughter Ball. Sugar House has good speakers, great fund-raisers and lots of service. West Valley is active
with service and Key Clubs, but needs to work on membership.
Div 5 – Dean Banner – Buhl meets at Spaghetti Place and sell corn as a fund-raiser for $3.00 per dozen or $5.00 per two
dozen. Burley is very active. They sponsor a Soccer League in the Fall and have a 5K Run. Filer is a good group; active and
strong. Hailey puts out a monthly newsletter and keeps busy. Jerome is very small, but after Bob Amoureux passed away,
they got a new member. They have an internet site about their food drive. Kimberly meets twice a month. Lost their
President-elect, but got a new one. The new school superintendent is interested in joining. Rupert gained 3 new members,
then lost 4. President and President-elect are both in their 30's. Twin Falls has good leadership in the club; wants to charter a
Key Club at a Charter School. Wants to build a Builders Club. They support Key Clubs at Twin Falls High School and
Canyon Ridge High School. Larry Hunter is an alumni of the Twin Falls Key Club. All the clubs need to involve parents of
Key Club members in a project or a celebration dinner.
Div 10 – Doug Lund – The President of Spanish Fork resigned abruptly; President-elect has taken over for the rest of
this year and his term next year. Doing well. A Doctor in the club hates Unicef and wants no one to donate to ELIMINATE.
Stephanie Bennett inserted that each club should be aware of guests attending, so they don't become embarrassed. Nephi only
had one member attend the installation banquet, but they are doing good service. A couple of clubs have turned into lunch
socials. Has encouraged the clubs to get involved in service and get non-Kiwanians to help at their service projects. They
need to get Key Clubbers to attend Kiwanis to tell how they are doing. Provo Gold lost their meeting place, but were invited
into the Provo Library with a free room. They voted to disband – the money needs to go to the District Foundation. The
PAGE 7
MINUTES OF THE THIRD BOARD MEETING
(Continued)
District Foundation Board will vote on whether to send it to
ELIMINATE. It's rejuvenating to attend other clubs and meet
with Kiwanians.
Div 6 – Larry Hunter – Wants the division to have more
unity, so they are having a division service project “Adopt-A-
Park (Camelback) on Apr 13th to do clean-up and replace bark.
All the clubs are encouraged to attend Kiwanis Int'l Convention
and all clubs have ELIMINATE fund-raisers including a Silent
Movie Nite in March every year. Boise Gem State is solid; has
programs; supports 2 Key Clubs; and has good ideas for
increasing membership. Capital City, Boise is growing; has
weekly meetings with programs; has a great web page (Gordon
Lewis asked for the webmaster's info); supports 5 Key Clubs;
many members bring guests. Eagle is small, but holding their
own. They are a very good club with lots of potential for
growth. Meridian is now at 47 members; very active; and have
good projects. Emmett is small, but have started getting
corporate members; and are very active.
Div 4 – Jim Terry – Bannock is getting schools to be
corporate members and is starting a K-Kids in September 2013.
They have a Big Kiwanis Garage Sale as their fund-raiser. Idaho
Falls is getting smaller. They have a Film-fest by Students as a
fund-raiser. Shelley has a community Easter Egg Hunt and they
do a lot in the community. They have a booth at the Blackfoot
Fair as a fund-raiser. Pocatello is getting smaller, but are
working on Chartering a Malad High School Key Club. Their
big fund-raiser is the Bing Hong Pancake Breakfast. Rexburg
sponsors an Easter Egg Hunt with 5,000 eggs filled with candy.
The Lt. Governor for next year is Mark Gunning from Bannock.
LaMar Anderson spoke about the Annual Club Gift to the
Kiwanis Int'l Foundation. Encouraged clubs to donate $6.00 per
member. If the whole district donates $5.00 per member KIF
gives back $5,000 for matching scholarships. In 2013-2014 KIF
is making a big change: They will only give scholarships to the top 5 Districts. Japan is always the top #1 District and will
receive $10,000. Second place is $4,000; Third place is $3,000; Fourth place is $2,000 and Fifth place is $1,000. All Districts
will get 5% back of monies donated to Annual Club Gift, Skip-A-Meal, Hixson & Zellers (that don't got to ELIMINATE), and
for Tablets of Honor. Clubs can apply for grants from KIF, but not for building anything. A project that is too big for a club
or district. KIF could only fund 20% of the proposals received this year. Right now Utah-Idaho ranks 8th with the District at
$2.68 per capita. Each Lt. Governor needs to explain Annual Club Gift to their clubs. Annual Club Gift is the priority gift to
KIF because we can get back scholarship money. There are 35 Districts in North America. Clubs need to be educated about
filling out grant requests to KIF. Also, clubs should consider sending a request for the Connelly Medal for people who are
heroes.
Communication – If you feel a club is in trouble, send an e-mail to John Brown and he will visit them to try to boost
them up. Keep him informed as to club status.
New club Bylaws are ready for on-line submission
The District needs a YCPO Chair. Since we don't have one yet, John Brown will attend the YCPO Conference.
District Convention will be 16-18 August 2013 in Salt Lake City, UT. The registration form and information will be in
the next U&I Kiwanian. Friday will have training and a catered BBQ; Saturday will be workshops and the House of
Delegates; Sunday will be the Memorial Service and both Board Meetings. The BBQ will be delegated to a club to handle.
Registration will be one price; meals will be broken out for each day (all day).
District Mid-Year Conference was canceled.
Governors Quilt – Bill Mullins is in charge of ticket sales. $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00. He passed out 40 tickets, price
list and a picture to each Lt. Governor in attendance.
Governor's visits to each division need to happen very soon. Each Lt. Governor needs to contact Governor Brown about
his schedule of when he could attend a division banquet to honor him. Please no gifts.
Miscellaneous:
1. Elimination of Mid-Year Conference has caused training to be done in each division.
2. Need to set up multi-year booking of District Conventions.
3. Western Canada and Montana have encouraged co-conventions every 3 years.
4. Establish a Vice Governor with a Bylaw change.
5. Increase the number of master trainers (Lt Governors while visiting your clubs, ask any who might be good).
6. On-going Growth Committee. Larry Hunter said to have 3 year terms and rotate so they are 3 years.
7. Club and District Websites need to be compatible.
8. Kiwanis Family get-to-ethers meet in a large hotel or go to a campsite to bond and enjoy each other's company (Kiwanis &
CKI).
9. Need more educational and fun ideas at District Convention. Have a computer room where someone can look up Webinars
of interest at Kiwanis International.
PAGE 8
MINUTES OF THE THIRD BOARD MEETING (Continued)
10. The Montana Governor got the rights to Bill Cosby Videos (made them available
during breaks and lifted everyone's moods).
11. Tele-conferencing with Lt. Governors with more lead time.
12. Int'l Convention in Vancouver BC – There are great places to visit: Lionsdale
Market; take a sea bus $9.50 all day pass; Eastside Marios is a great Restaurant.
Thursday night June 27th is set for a District Dinner.
13. Raise District Due by $10.00 per person to pay for DCON reg and part of food.
Motion by Doug Lund; 2nd
by Jim Spinelli to be brought before the House of
Delegates August 17, 2013 to raise the District Dues from $20.00 per year to $30.00
per year. The vote was unanimous. Voter information packets need to be put together
and it needs to be advertised in the U&I Kiwanian.
Jerry Steelman – Builders Club Administrator – Tooele just built two new
Builders Clubs. There are 16 in the District. Need one new one in every division.
The Great American Award is presented by some Kiwanis Clubs: 5th
Graders must
learn the Pledge of Allegiance (including punctuation and spelling), Preamble to the
Constitution, Gettysburg Address, All Presidents in order, and all States with their
Capitols.
Revis Turner – ELIMINATE World-wide Service Project – Need to have
$200,000 pledged or raised by May 1st. $370 + per member over 5 years. This
District's Achievement Goal is to raise $650,000 by 2015. The Challenge Goal is to
raise $756,000 or $474 + per member. Mother's Day Zeller's are different from last
year. Last year the ribbon was pink. This year is is blue and turquoise. Buy one for
$1,250.00 for a special woman in your life by June 15th – this protects 690 mothers
from Maternal & Neonatal Tetanus. There are bumper stickers for sale at $5.00 each
or more. If someone purchases a Zeller by June 15th
, the club or person will get 10
pumper stickers to give or sell. The ELIMINATE Committee purchased 250 as a first
order
John Brown presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Bill Mullins when he
awarded him with his Zeller.

OPTIONAL DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS /
CRIME INSURANCE PROGRAM
All clubs should know that Kiwanis International purchases liability insurance for all
of the clubs and activities that covers the legal liability for the Kiwanis family.
However, coverage for directors and officers and crime coverage for the individual
clubs are optional and the responsible to purchase if desired. This policy is available
for a reduced cost from the Kiwanis program insurance carrier, the Hylant group and
information to purchase is sent directly to the clubs. If you serve as a member of the
board, you will want to know if this is something you want for your club to have. The
Utah – Idaho district has its’ own coverage but this does not extend to each club. This
coverage mainly is for decisions made by the board and the crime would cover
money.
As a reminder, clubs still have a limited opportunity to purchase either or both of the
optional Directors’ and Officers’ liability and crime coverage’s. The enrollment will
be closing on July 31st. After that, clubs will have to wait until novermber 1st of this
year to apply.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Hylant Group directly at P 317-817-
5139 or email Adam Reiff at [email protected].
May all your efforts be safe and prosperous!
Thank you for all you do for Kiwanis.
Sincerely,
Lori l. Bergsma
Idaho-Utah Risk Manager
ATTENTION ALL CLUB SECRETARIES By Janet Flinders, District Secretary

their behalf will need to get a delegate form filled out and sent to Janet Flinders, 515
Bringhurst Drive, Providence, UT 84332-9439 for her signature. A copy of this form
will be sent to Kiwanis International by Janet. Any questions, please call Janet at
435-757-2950.
All attending International convention be sure to bring your passport. This
convention is in Canada, so you can't get across the border and back without a
passport.

please get your reports filled out on-line or send them to Janet at the above address
and she will enter them for you with your permission.

Utah – Idaho District Dinner
Kiwanis International Convention
June 27, 2013
Vancouver British Columbia
We will be eating at East Side Mario’s just across the bay from the convention center.
The address is 123 Carrie Cates Court, North Vancouver BC; it is in Lower Lonsdale
neighborhood. There are many shops and markets in the immediate area. If you wish
to see a menu, go to: http://www.eastsidemarios.com I have made reservations for the
entire Utah – Idaho District contingent. Dinner will be ordered off of the menu. The
cost will depend on your order, but in most cases should be less than $20 per person.
Please let me know if you do not desire to go to dinner, I will inform the restaurant to
adjust our reservation. Getting to East Side Mario’s is very easy, just take the Seabus.
The first choice for accessing North Vancouver for many visitors is the Seabus, a 400-
passenger catamaran ferry that travels between the Waterfront Station in downtown
Vancouver and Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver. The Seabus is part of TransLink,
Metro Vancouver's public transit system. The crossing takes 12 minutes, and the
Seabus operates from about 6am to 1am Monday to Saturday, and 8am to 11pm on
Sunday.
I hope to see all of you at the International Convention and also at our District Dinner.
The dress for dinner will be casual.

U AND I KAN KOOK
(UTAH-IDAHO DISTRICT OF KIWANIS COOKBOOK)
A cookbook consisting of the combined recipes of members of the District and friends
of Kiwanis has the potential to raise a substantial amount of money. All the profit
from the sale will go to the ELIMINATE Project.
The profit from the recipe book sales will be divided equally based on:
1. Club that submits the most recipes
2. Club with the highest percentage of club participation (Under 20 members)
3. Club with the highest percentage of club participation (20-40 members)
4. Club with the highest percentage of club participation (41 members and above)
The clubs who receive an award amount will be able to use it toward their club’s
ELIMINATE suggested giving amount. The money could conceivably be enough for
a Walter Zeller Award for a member of your club.
Please contact your division Lieutenant Governor if you are willing to be the lead
person in your division for this fundraiser.
Please send your recipes to me: [email protected]. All of the recipes need to be in
by July 1, 2013 for submission to the printer.

The Utah-Idaho District Challenge to have gifts and pledges total $200,000 by May
31. As a district we have received at the Kiwanis International Foundation, $178,910
as of April 16. We want to encourage all clubs to send in funds raised by the
Eliminate Project club committees to reach our goal of $200,000. Remember as soon
as the money is sent in to the KI Foundation, the funds are sent to UNICEF for the
immunization of mothers and babies. With $200 K our District will protect 111,100
mothers and their children.
The Rupert Kiwanis Club is excited to announce their first Annual Mother’s Day
Award to honor a special woman in Minidoka County for her efforts in benefiting
young children (six and under) and/or pregnant women. Kiwanis is honoring this
woman in conjunction with the challenge to be a major player in the International
ELIMINATE MNT PROJECT. Our fundraising will help mothers and babies
throughout the world become immune toTetanus, which claims the life of a baby
every nine minutes and a mother every eighteen minutes.
This will be done through the efforts of UNICEF, which is providing tetanus shots
and boosters, and further education about cleanliness and sterility in the birthing of
babies.
We are asking for nominations for a woman from Minidoka County who is a mother
or mother-figure. This opens up the field to almost anyone who might be in the
medical, daycare or education profession. Or it could be your next-door neighbor who
has done something outstanding with young children or pregnant mothers.
Updates from the field
UNICEF shared that it is awaiting the results of the validation surveys that the World
Health Organization (WHO) completed in Cote d’Ivoire, Iraq and Sierra Leone. I
have provided some additional updates from the field for you to use as encouragement
and evidence of our hard work to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.
Countries that have upcoming validation surveys include:
Four states (Mizoram, Odisha, Delhi and Uttarkand) in India are conducting
validation surveys this month.
Gabon has scheduled its validation survey in July.
Lao PDR and Equatorial Guinea both successfully completed their pre-
validation surveys and are now ready to conduct validation surveys.
The following countries have Tetanus Toxoid Supplemental Immunization
Activities (TT SIAs) planned for April and May:
South Sudan is currently conducting TT SIAs in four states, aiming to
immunize more than 1.2 million women of reproductive age.
Haiti, where our delegation will travel next week, will conduct SIAs at the end
of this month and into early May, aiming to immunize approximately 1.3
million women of reproductive age.
Afghanistan is aiming to vaccinate 800,000 women of reproductive age in May.
Mali plans to conduct SIAs in 22 districts in May.
Kenya plans to conduct the first round of SIAs at the end of May, aiming to immunize
approximately 1.5 million women of reproductive age.

DISTRICT PROJECT ELIMINATE REPORT (Continued)
The Annual Mother’s Day Award was presented at the Rupert Club Weekly Luncheon
on Tuesday, May 14.
The Twin Falls Kiwanis
Club celebrated Mother’s
Day at the Noon Luncheon
on May 9 with a program
focusing on Project
Eliminate. Guest Speaker
for the meeting was Dr.
Jonathon Tripp of Twin
Falls who provided medical
information about Tetanus
and the effects on mothers
and babies. Other guests
included Dr. John Keys,
CEO of St. Luke’s Magic
Valley Medical Center who announced to the club that the St. Luke’s Foundation
will award $600 for Project Eliminate. Linda Wright-Hartgen and Gina Carney are
co-chairs of the local committee.
KURE MOTORCYCLE VISIT
AT THE DIVISION 7 INTERCLUB
HOSTED BY THE SANTA CLARA CLUB
One Kiwanian with a vision for the open road for the elimination of Maternal-
Neonatal Tetanus is putting his efforts into riding his motorcycle in a summer tour of
all 48 states. Bob Burleson, a member of the La Canada Kiwanis Club, California,
will attempt to ride his motorcycle over 12,000 miles for the longest all-in-one-country
ride and break the World Guinness Book Record in doing so. The trip will begin at
the La Canada Club on Memorial Day, May 27, and conclude with a return trip home
by Labor Day.
Bob “The Eliminator” Burlison will be
attending at least one Kiwanis Club
meeting in each of the 48 states during
his summer journey. The Santa Clara
Kiwanis Club will host Bob when it
meets on May 30 at 12:30 pm at the
Golden Corral in St. George. Division
7 has scheduled an Interclub for the
event, and Governor John Brown and
Lt. Gov. Bill Mullins will be in
attendance as well.
As reported in the LA Times,
“Burlison is a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada-AM. The
Kiwanis Unity Ride to Eliminate (KURE) project will support the Eliminate Project,
an international effort by Kiwanis and UNICEF to defeat maternal and neonatal
tetanus. Thousands of children in developing countries — and some mothers — die
from the disease every year.
"This seemed like a pretty good excuse to take a little ride," said Burlison. "I hope it
will strengthen the Kiwanis name and unite everyone across the nation."
His ride is a new BMW bike. His high-tech helmet includes a Bluetooth device, a
navigation system and a hook-up for a MP3 player. He will wear a jumpsuit, which
he hopes to decorate with a symbol from each state.”

DISTRICT PROJECT ELIMINATE REPORT (Continued)

drawing will be held on Labor Day, September 2.
Details of the trip can be found on the website and at ww.facebook.com/KURE2013.

Key Club Scholarship Essay
Chain Reaction
What does “changing the world, one child and one community at time” mean to me?
To me, it means that if I want to change the world, it’s not going to happen by some
great big event or invention I come up with. You change the world by first changing
yourself, and then helping every person you can. Focusing on the individual in a
community starts a chain reaction. If each one of us could make one person’s life
better, then that one person we touched will want to do the same for someone else and
they, in turn, help someone else and it goes on and on until it builds into a wave of
people helping people which changes communities and changes the world. I want to
be that person who makes this world better one person at a time. I’m going to school
as a business major with a minor in photography so I can own my own photography
business. Being a professional photographer, my whole job will be focusing on each
person I photograph to make them feel attractive and
special. I want every client I have to walk away from
their session feeling they have worth. Especially when it
comes to girls, I want to give them that certain kind of
confidence in themselves that they don’t have when they
don’t feel beautiful. Our world is so drenched in all these
unachievable perceptions of beauty that I want to make
people realize that they don’t have to strive for
unachievable to be beautiful. I want to inspire them with
confidence to go out into the world and contribute in
their own ways to changing the world. You can’t fix the
world by yourself. It only comes with teamwork. I’m
going to start a chain reaction and change the world, one
person and one community at a time.
KIWANIS HIXON AWARD/JIM SPINELLI
The Kiwanis of Hailey and the Wood River
Valley is proud to announce Jim Spinelli as
the George F. Hixon Fellowship
recipient. This award was chosen by club
membership for commitment to the children
of the community and involvement and
passion in our local club. Funds were
donated to help with the elimination of
maternal and neonatal tetanus. We would
like to thank Jim for his dedicated service to
Kiwanis of our community. Jim is the
governor elect for 2012-2013 and governor
2013-2014 of the Utah-Idaho District.

POCATELLO
CLUBS
KIWANIS ONE
DAY 2013
PROJECT
POCATELLO
— Ben LaBarge, the
Vice-President of the
Bannock Kiwanis is also the manager of the
Pocatello Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
Members of the club were discussing possible
projects to work on with the Pocatello
Kiwanis Club, and Ben suggested working on
the latest Habitat for Humanity home and
participating in a major clean-up of the
Restore. The North Garfield neighborhood is
being revitalized one home at a time and a
home was nearing completion.
The new, modest two-story home with
red and blue siding and gray trim now stands
on the lot with plans to build another one
nearby. Saturday morning, April 6th, the front
yard of the new home was filled with
volunteers from the Pocatello and Bannock
Kiwanis Clubs. Using shovels, rakes and
wheelbarrows, they were grading the front
yard and planting trees. “It’s exciting when
two clubs to work together,” said Bannock
Kiwanis member Anne LoPiccalo.
It was the value of the Habitat for
Humanity project that drew the Kiwanis
together to apply a little elbow grease to the
front yard of the home. The slope away from
the porch on the home had to be improved
and trees needed to be planted. About 10
volunteers from the mixed Kiwanis clubs
pitched in to help project manager, Zane
Robinson.
“We appreciate all the volunteer help
we can get,” Robinson said. He’s hoping to
finish the home in May. LoPiccalo said its
club members sit down each year and looks at
needs in the community. This spring they
contacted the other Kiwanis club in Pocatello
and combined efforts on the Habitat for
Humanity project.
And even though 10 volunteers were
busy moving dirt, removing rocks and
planting trees, LoPiccalo apologized that
there weren’t more. “The problem is we have
so many things going on today,” she said.
Club members from both chapters were
attending the Zonta Women of Achievement
awards luncheon, and others were at the
ReStore, which helps generate money for
Habitat for Humanity. There were also
several sports events being hosted in the Gate
City on that day.
Volunteers make it all happen. Though
Kiwanis members were doing landscaping
Saturday, over the past few months volunteers
from BYU-Idaho built the cedar fence and the
footings for the home, including labor, were
donated by Spring Creek Construction.
The North Garfield project is the tenth
one tackled by the organization. Robinson
said so far every owner who has moved into a
Habitat for Humanity home has stayed.
