Aids to assembly anddisassemblyMOLYKOTEG-n paste preventsgalling. . . allows threadedfasteners 'to be assembled anddisassembled easierMOLYKOTEG-n paste lubricatesthreaded fasteners, reducesfrictiOn, and increasesclampingpressureof the assembly. It's acombination of molybdenumdisulfide powder and other solidlubricants in a baseof soap-thickened mineral oil. Theselubricating solids let threads turnsmoothly. . . reduce breakawaytorque even after long periods ofexposure to steam, hightemperatures, chemicals andother adverseconditions.MOLYKOTE G-n lubricant makespress-fit assembly of motorshafts possibleThe H.K. Porter Co., has beenusing MOLYKOTEG-n lubricantto aid in the assembly of electricmotors at their Warren, Ohioplant. Init ial attempts to press-fitmotor shafts into their slightlysmaller rotor cores resulted ingalling and metal transferbetween the mating surfaces,

Typical applications of specialtylubricantsdeformation of the corelaminations, and bent shafts. Toremedy these problems, themotor shafts were thru-hardenedand coated with MOLYKOTE G-npaste prior to assembly. TheMOLYKOTE G-n completelyeliminated the assembly problemsand assisted in producing adesired keying action betweenthe fluted shaft and rotor cores.

MOLYKOTE pene-Iubepenetrating 011aids mechanicsin heavy duty equlpmel)t overhaulLoosening rusted or frozen boltson construction equipment, industrial trucks, and tractor-trailers is done quickly andefficiently at Patterson Service,Bay City, Michigan, with the helpof pene-Iube. Even the largest,corrosion-locked nuts respond tothe treatment. The bolt is firstheated, shocked with a hammer, and then sprayed withMOLYKOTE pene-Iube oil. Unlikeconventional penetrating oils, thesolid film lubricants in pene-Iubedo not flash off when applied toheated bolts, hot manifold nuts, and other engine areas.Pene-Iube is also used to loosenspring shackle bolts, sheet metalbolts, large U-bolts, and formany other tough disassemblyjobs. After the penetrating actionis done, pene~lube leaves behinda corrosion-inhibiting film thathelps prevent further rust.

BearingsHigh-temperature conveyor runssmoothly on MOLYKOTE 41silicone greaseIn baking cores for engine blockcastings, the Ford MotorCompany, Dearborn, Michigan, uses a number of oven conveyorsystems, each with 1200 trolleybearings and four six-inch rollerbearings. Subjected 2% hours outof every 4 to heat up to lOOF,the trolley bearings seizedrepeatedly when lubricated withorganic greases, Since 1948,

however, all trolley and ovenroller' bearings have beenlubricated with MOLYKOTE 41grease. . . on a relubricationschedule of only once a week fortrolley bearings and once amonth for oven bearings.MOLYKOTE 33 grease withstands,below-zero temperatures. . .with no stiffeningMcKenzie Tank Lines of Tampa,Inc., hauls 30 to 60 loads ofanhydrous ammonia each day atbelow-zero temperatures. Bearingfailures in the trucks' transferpumps were occurring at the rateof two a week, locking thepumps. Investigation showed thatthe lubricant used - a lithium-based organic grease - frozesolid whenever even a small leak

in a seal allowed the coldammonia to reach it. Tests with anumber of lubricants resulted inthe selection of MOLYKOTE 33grease. . . which has eliminatedthe failure of transfer pumpbearings. The consistency of thissilicone grease remains relativelyconstant over a wide temperaturerange. It still works at -100F, yetthere is little bleed attemperatures to 300F, and nothinning out at temperaturesof 400F.

MOLYKOTE 44 grease keeps kilnpreheater fans spinningKiln preheater fan bearing failurewas almost a daily occurance atthe Acme Brick Company ofEdmunds, Oklahoma. The fansrun at high speed 24 hours aday, 7 days a week with theirbearings exposed to temperatureswelt above 300F (148.9C).Initially, the fans were equippedwith water-cooled bearings, butsulphur fumes given off by brickscuring in the kiln attacked the

cooling lines, causing corrosionand leaks. The water-cooled.bearings were replaced bydouble-row roller bearing pillowblocks and several kinds of hightemperature bearing lubricantswere tried, but the greasesgummed up and jammed thebearings or melted and ran out. Then the company appliedMOLYKOTE 44 grease. Theresults? After a year of servicewith weekly lubrication of the fanbearings, the plant super-intendent reports that bearingfailure is virtually a thingof the past.

Fluorosilicone grease increasesbearing life 6 to 9 timesWhen grit-laden coolant leachedout the hydrocarbon greasesfrom the wheel-spindle bearingsof a knife-blade grinder, bearingfailure would result in loss ofhalf a day's production time forreplacement. To insure bearinglongevity, the double-row,pre-lubricated bearings havebeen replaced with remov-able-seal bearings with greatergrease capacity, adequatelysealed. . . and the inner surfaceof the bearing seals is coatedwith MOLYKOTE FS 3452 valvelubricant. As well as being insol-uble in oils, fuels, and solvents, this fluorosil icone material resistswashout by grinding machinecoolant.

ChainsMOLYKOTE 321R bondedlubricant is especially suitable forchain applications where dustand dirt are encounteredChain saws. . . dryer drums. . .grinding mills. . . rotary brooms. . . ready-mix trucks. . . asphaltplant heater drum trunnionrollers. . . are some of the manychain applications whereMOLYKOTE 321 bondedlubricant is being used withoutstanding success.

A county highway departmenthad trouble with tractor-mountedrotary brooms. Workingconstantly in swirling dirt, oftenmixed with corrosive salt, drivechains repeatedly failed. . . untila solid film lubricant solvedthe problem. In chain saw applications, wherehigh temperatures areexperienced, MOLYKOTE 321Rprevents seizing and binding overa wide temperature range. . .and lubricates effectively evenafter long periods of nonuse.MOLYKOTE 710G oil solveschain problem in cotton bleacheryTenter frame chains, previouslylubricated with motor oil, werehard to start after weekendshutdown. caused deposits which built upon the chains and sprocketscausing links to stick. . . andsprockets to throw chains. Wearwas excessive too. Since

switching to MOLYKOTE 710Gfluid, all these problems havebeen eliminated. An addedadvantage, previous lubricant hadto be added 3 or 4 times pershift - 710G fluid is added onlyonce a week.

Clear, non-staining MOLYKOTE557 silicone lubricant cuts.maintenance and downtime atprinting plantBecause of its effectiveness andcleanliness, MOLYKOTE 557lubricant is being used at McKayPress, Midland, Michigan, tolubricate automatic feeders anddrive chains that previously wereoil or grease lubricated. Not onlydoes the silicone materiallubricate just as well, but unlikeconventional oils and greases, itdries to a clear, slippery filmwhich adheres tenaciously tometal surfaces. It does not soilhands, clothes, or paper; and, asit is dry, it does not collect dustand dirt. Any loose materialwhich does deposit on the chainis usually blown off by theaerosol spray when new lubricantis added.

MOLYKOTE G-n paste protectsgears during wear-inScoring and seizing of truckdifferential gears during criticalwear-in proving-ground testswere ended by applying amolybdenum disulfide pasteduring assembly. Burnished intothe metal surfaces, MOLYKOTEG-n paste permits faster, trou~le-free wear-in. . . and conditionsthe surface for oil lubrication.

MOLYKOTE G-n paste lubricantcuts shovel maintenance, increases loadings inlimestone quarryAt the Gottron BrothersCompany limestone quarry,Fremont, Ohio, MOLYKOTE G-npaste has reduced maintenancelubrication from twice a day toonce a week on this NorthwestModel 6 shovel. The shoveloperates almost continuously,. loading an average of about 136tons per hour. A brush-oncoating of MOLYKOTE G-n pasteonce a week adequatelylubricates the swinging, deck, and driving gears that positionthe shovel's material handlingmechanism. The previous lubricant, apetroleum product containingextreme-pressure additives, solidified in its container duringcold weather. . . and the largediameter gears, which revolve athigh speed and develop aconsiderable amount of frictionheat when operating, had atendency to throw off theprevious lubricant. The excellentthermal stability of MOLYKOTEG-n paste has eliminated boththese problems.

MOLYKOTE 321 bondedlubricant Improves aluminumextrusions, saves costsAluminum part, above, extrudedfrom die lubricated withMOLYKOTE 321 shows excellentfinish compared with part extrudedwith previous lubricant. The use of MOLYKOTE 321applied to extrusion dies hassignificantly reduced oxidepickup, thus doubling thenumber of billets which can bextruded before a die requiresleaning and relubricating. Lessxide pickup also meansmproved surface finish oftruded parts, greatly reducinguffing and polishing operations.ubricant costs in the applicationave been cut from about $30er die to 20 cents or less.

MOLYKOTE 557 spray reducesrejects In high-speed roll formingDamaged parts and excessivedowntime were two troublesfaced by a manufacturer of roll-formed aluminum and steel partsfor awnings, shutters, patiocovers, carports, and steelbuilding components. BeforeMOLYKOTE 557 was used, theroll forming dies ripped sliversfrom the edge of the metal stripas it passed between the dies atspeeds up to 100 feet a minute. The metal slivers were carried bythe strip 'into the forming dies, and caused surface damage toformed parts. Shutdown wasrequired for cleaning this metalfrom the dies, often after lessthan 300 feet of strip was formed.

MOLYKOTE 557 was tried afterother lubricants either failed orstained the formed parts. Now afull coil of strip can beprocessed without interruption bymerely spraying the coil edgewith this extreme pressurelubricant before forming. In stainless forming, anothermanufacturer has doubled toollife by applying liquidMOLYKOTE 557 to the Type 301stainless strip by two felt wicks, which are reservoir-fed.

In deep drawing, anothercompany increased die life from15,000 pieces to 60,000 pieceswhen five percent of MOLYKOTEM gear guard was added to thedrawing oil.In cutting steel tubes, saw lifequadrupled with the addition offour percent of MOLYKOTE Mgear guard to the cutting oil.In cutting aluminum extrusions, one manufacturer doubled thenumber of cuts betweenresharpening saw blades bypretreating the saws withMOLYKOTE 321R bondedlubricant to prevent metal build-up.

O-rings, seals, valves, and packingsMOLYKOTE FS-3452 valvelubricant extends relubrlcatlonperiod from 2 weeks to over8 monthsLubricated with this fluorosiliconegrease, plug valves exposed to amixture of compressed air, water, and chlorine at the JeffersonChemical Co., Texas, are stil loperating smoothly after morethan eight months withoutrelubrication. With conventionalvalve lubricants, identical valvesin the same service had to belubricated every two weeks -frequently more often when they

became hard to operate beforescheduled relubrication. Whenopened for inspection after eightmonths of service, a test valvelubricated with MOLYKOTE FS-3452 valve lubricant was still wellcoated with grease. . . and therewas no evidence of valvecorrosion or degradation of thelubricant.

Packing gland of centrifugalpump lubricated with MOLYKOTEFS-3452 valve lubricantThe packing had to be replacedmonthly in a centrifugal pumpused in a hot-water recirculationsystem that operates at 190F.Application of MOLYKOTE FS-3452 valve lubricant in thepacking gland has kept the pumpin operation for two yearswithout repacking or greasing.MOLYKOTE valve seal andMOLYKOTE 111 compound arealso recommended for thisapplication.

Reciprocating plunger pumpoperating In 50 percent causticsoda relies on MOLYKOTEFS-3452 valve lubricantPacking had to be changed everysix weeks, until FS-3452 valvelubricant was used in thepacking gland. With FS-3452, thepump has been operating withoutleaking for over a year with nochanges of packing.

MOLYKOTEFS-3452 valvelubricant protects O-rings Inrefrigeration service equipmentFluorosilicone grease has solveda problem in the lubrication ofplug valves of a high vacuu.mmanifold manufactured forservicing refrigeration systems.Previous lubricants either had toohigh a vapor pressure forvacuum service. . . or theycouldn't withstand fluorine- orchlorine-containing refrigerants,or the acids formed when arefrigeration system becomescontamined by moisture.

To prevent corrosive vapors andrefrigerant from attacking theneoprene O-rings that are usedas seals on each valve plug, thea-rings are buttered with a smallamount of MOLYKOTE FS-3452valve lubricant before the valve isassembled.Unlike conventional petroleumgreases, the fluorosilicone greasedoes not sludge in contact withcontaminants, but retains itsgrease consistency to shield theO-rings from contact with thecorrosive materials.

ea~ lubricant eliminates ball-aring drawer guide problemshoolfield Industries of Mullins,C., used to lubricate the steelll-bearing drawer guides of itsrniture products with grease.is method was messy andeffective when the grease wasposed to high temperaturesring shipment. The greaseould melt and run out, leavinge drawer guide unlubricated,d sometimes staining theoduct. Lint and dirt alsollected in the grease causinge drawers to stick.ut drawers in the furniturenufactured by Schoolfielddustries slid more freely thaner since MOLYKOTE 557 hasplaced the conventional grease.e drawer guides are sprayedth MOLYKOTE557 duringsembly. "Fhelubricant dries tocolorless, slippery film onetal and wood surfaces. It doest stain, rub off or collect dirt.oprene-sealed 50,OOO-poundors slide on aluminum flangesch assembly bay in theennedy Space Center's Vehiclessembly Building uses anrangement of seven curtain-pe sliding doors.e coupling of an aluminumnge and U-shaped neopreneals provides a tight closure and

shields the building interior fromblowing sand. Until MOLYKOTE321R bonded lubricant wasapplied to the flanges, stickingwas very severe. Now eachflange is relubricated twice ayear with MOLYKOTE 321R, andthere have been no stickingproblems. MOLYKOTE321R driesrapidly, and will not hold sand.

MOLYKOTE 557 dry-filmlubricant keeps push buttonsoperating smoothlyMetal push rods operatingagainst laminated phenolic camsurfaces in these electricalappliance switches are lubricatedwith MOLYKOTE 557 - a clear,wax-like, dry-film lubricant. The grease previously usedtended to cake at lowtemperatures causing switches tooperate stiffly, if at all. At hightemperatures, the grease tendedto bleed from the switches.MOLYKOTE 557 has eliminatedthese problems. The lubricantstays put at all times. . . anddoes not pick up dust or dirt. The dry film lubricant is easy toap~ly. Perforated metal basketscontaining thousands of pushrods are simplydipped into asolution of equalparts of MOLYKOTE557 and Chlorothene.*Upon removal jfrom the solution,

the solvent evaporates leaving aninvisible coating of the clear, slippery film.MOLYKOTE557 keeps pinsettersoperating smoothly without messMOLYKOTE557 spray lubricantis helping Sky Lanes of Omaha,Nebraska, to "keep 'em rolling."In order to maintain smooth

operation of their many movingparts, bowling pinsetters requirea lubricant which is easy toapply but doesn't run, drip, orcollect dust and dirt. At SkyLanes, MOLYKOTE 557 lubricantis applied to various cams, levers, linkages, pins, andbushings of the pinsetters once amonth by aerosol spray. Theresults have been mostimpressive. In the words of themaintenance supervisor, "We arevery pleased with MOLYKOTE557 because it is clean, easy touse, and effective. Sprayapplication makes it easy tolubricate hard-to-reach parts. Thecoating stays put. It doesn't runor drip into the pit. And since it'sdry, it doesn't pick up any dustor dirt."The pinsetters are in almostconstant operation from 8 a.m.until midnight. In the three yearsthat Sky Lanes has been usingMOLYKOTE 557 dry lubricant, breakdowns due to inadequatelubrication have been completelyeliminated..Chlorothene is a registered trademark ofThe DowChemical Company.

    Other miscellaneous applicationsof specialty lubricants

Clean, nonstaining MOLYKOTE557 lubricant makes pressure-sensitive paper stock easy tohandle in printing plantWhen lifts of. pressure-sensitivestock are cut or trimmed, thecutter blade tends to extrudeadhesive from between therelease sheet and the stock.Excess adhesive may be spreadacross the edges of the stocktending to glue the sheetstogether, causing feedingproblems in subsequentoperations. To eliminate theseproblems, one printer fans thelifts of pressure-sensitive stock;sprays along the cut edge withMOLYKOTE 557 lubricant; andthen wipes off the excess. Thesolvent in the aerosol spraytends to soften or dissolve anyadhesive along the edges of thelift - and the nonstaininglubricant film prevents theindividual sheets from stickingtogether.Cutter blades cut smoothly withthin-film lubricantMOLYKOTE 557 thin-filmlubricant is helping production atMohawk Paper Mills in Cohoes,New York.Cutter blades on the roll splitterspreviously had a tendency tocrush rather than cut rolls ofpulp stock. The operator wouldthen have to stop, raise theblade, and start another cut.Often four separate strokeswould be needed.

Now, however, sprayed with thedry lubricant, the guillotine-typecutter blades cut rolls up to fivefeet in diameter in one smooth, continuous motion. Oneapplication is usually good forsix or seven rolls, and there'snever any danger ofcontaminating the pulp becausethe lube is always dry, clean, andnonstaining.

Dry, solid lubricant reduces bolttorque requirements by 35 percentThe torque required to tightenbolts properly in Dyna-Head@-hydraulic blade mountsmanufactured by SiliconTechnology Corporation ofOakland, N.J., has been cut from200 to 130 inch pounds bylubricating the bolt threads withMOLYKOTE 321R dry bondedlubricant.

The bolts exert a total force ofover 130,000 pounds to securelygrip the 0.004-inch thick stainlesssteel diamond saw blade used tocut wafers from semiconductoringots. Besides reducing thetorque necessary to attain therequired bolt tension, theMOLYKOTE 321R lubricant also

    I~

assures that the clamping forceis evening distributed around theblade circumference to provideuniform radial tensioning. If evenone bolt is the least bit loose, the saw blade can slip and tearwhen it is tensioned. Before STC started using theMOLYKOTE lubricant, gallingand seizing between theunlubricated threads of the boltsand their bolt holes also occured. This often resulted in a ruinedblade mount due to the precisebalancing requirements neededfor proper operation of the saw.Application of MOLYKOTE 321Reliminated this problem. And theDow Corning lubricant alsoprotects against corrosion causedby the water used to cool thesaw and workplace during slicing.STC now specifies that wheneversaw blades are changed, thebolts be relubricated withMOLYKOTE 321R dry solid lubricant.
