Page 2: Types of research

Types of research• When preparing for a production you need

to put in the research to first find out what you are going to produce a product for. There are two types of main research qualitative and quantitative, these both consist and are based on different answers. Qualitative is based on answers, opinions and more detailed answers with analysis, whereas quantitative is more based on analysing statistics, numerical data and measurable fact.

• Qualitative and quantitative Methods include different research so qualitative include focus groups , in-depth interviews, and reviews of documents for types of themes. Whereas qualitative methods would include Surveys, structured interviews & observations, and reviews of records or documents for numeric information. Also explained briefly in the image.

Page 3: Types of research

Quantitative• So an example of quantitative

type of research would be for a producer

• “ how many are either interested in horror movies or thriller movies”

• This is because the answer would be based on numerical data.

This is an example of a quantitative questionnaire

Page 4: Types of research

Qualitative • Whereas a qualitative type of

research for a producer Would be

• “why do you prefer horror movies” or “why do you prefer thriller movies”

• This is because it is based on opinion and more of a detailed answered.

This is an example of a qualitative survey

Methods of research • Different methods of research include primary and

secondary sources, Primary research which can be field research involves gathering new data that has not been collected before . For example, surveys using questionnaires or interviews with groups of people in a focus group. Secondary research (desk research) involves gathering existing data that has already been produced.

• When collecting primary or secondary research it can be also either qualitative or quantitative.

Disadvantage of these methods both primary and secondary research found can both be unreliable so it best to check the information and do your background check.

This is a picture explaining the different methods of research

Page 6: Types of research

Primary• So an example of primary quantitative

research, would be a producer 1 giving out a survey asking questions relating to movies, were all the questions have statistics related to them, such as ow many like horror? How many like comedy ? How many like romance? Or who likes cliff hanger endings? Who likes happy endings? Who likes sad endings? All this questions would be quantitative and primary research for a producer

• This is Also the same for qualitative but would have different questions on relating to more detailed opinions, such as why you chose your given genre as your favorite? Etc.

These are examples of primary sources where you create yourself or analyse documents creating your own research

Page 7: Types of research

Secondary • Secondary research is similar but would be if

producer 2 asked this producer1 who just had this survey completed to use his notes. Which would make the research for producer 2 secondary as he did not produce it.

• Disadvantage of these methods both primary and secondary research found can both be unreliable so it best to check the information and do your background check

An example of different pieces of secondary evidence. These are secondary as other people have already created the document and have done their research already. For some one else to read and use as their secondary evidence or research

Demographic factors • The purpose of research can relate

to many different things such as demographic factors, which can be big effecting factor related to media, as demographic factors can include age, income and occupation, population, gender etc. these factors can be key influences for someone releasing a product, an example of this would be a movie such as toy story , Disney animations target children as their primary source and parents as their secondary source.

These are examples of factors including demographic factors which could affect a business, a movie production etc.any thing looking to make a profit

Psychographic segmentation • Another factor which affects the market is

Psychographic segmentation which divides the market into groups based on social class, lifestyle and personality characteristics. It is based on the assumption that the types of products and brands an individual purchases will reflect that persons characteristics and patterns of living. Characteristics can be such as The socio-economic scale which can effect the opinion of different people depending were they are on the scale. This is a major factor for market competition as when wanting to release a product you have to know what is already out there, what people want or need and were the best and who your product is going to beneficial for or who is going to be able to afford you product most will aim for the c1 or c2 working classes as in the UK most of the population are in this class, revealing who are going to be doing the

Advertising • in addition advertising is a major factor

as it is key when promoting a brand or a product, so a producer should think about this if the movie is trying to target teenagers, then advertisement should really be put online all throughout social media as this age range is more likely to see the promotion of the trailer or movie there, another example would be if the target range for the producer was 50 upwards then the promotion should be more paper based or on TV simpler ways in which the older the generation find out news

These our examples of online advertisement promoting movies online

Marketing • The last main factors when it comes to the media is production viability, cost and technological resources which can

be limited if the their isn’t a lot of supplies, production viability or resources such as cameras, makeup, costumes or editing software which is provided by the company which can decrease the chances of the movie making it big, or being a good quality.

• Cost of the production is a major factor as producer will try to stay in the budget the company has to offer as the main objective when releasing a game, movie or series is to make a profit and gain a high credit from the audience, which will expand and publicize the brand, but in reality you can only do this when the spending the budget has been planned out well. As there are some many factors which are key to a production, such as the resources you will need which can be vast, like trying to create a horror movie you might need costumes, fake blood, wounds. Or with action, you might need more extreme props such as cars, explosions and weaponry which can all be extremely expensive and if the studio you are producing the movie, or series does not have the resources already or have the funds to pay for the equipment you need the likelihood is your not going to be able to create what you have planned.

• Which is why cost is so important when it comes to planning a production as your funds provided is what you must plan around. for which is why research is so important, a producer can do their background research on actors in a audition for the movie and decide who has the best look or acting skills for the production, who will cost more than the others.

• In media terms you can say that depending on what other movies from other competitors are going to be released a producer should plan the release date around a time were other movies are not going to be release which would mean more income for the company releasing your movie.
