Types of Heating Systems

Most of these systems are one of five major types. Before choosing which system you want you should consider the system’s effectiveness in meeting the cooling and heating needs and budget for the space you need it for.

Hydronic

This is also known as a hot water baseboard system, in which a boiler heats the hot water for this system. The heat is then circulated through tubes that are located in the baseboard heating units attached to the walls in the home. They are generally quiet and energy efficient and can be fueled by natural gas, oil, or electricity. For each room you can control the temperature separately. This system can be slow to warm the room and will have to have a separate cooling system.

Geothermal

They are found in eco-conscious office spaces and homes, using natural heat from the ground to regulate the internal temperatures. They can be expensive to install but overtime they will pay for themselves. Most are energy-efficient and can help to lower the utility bills. It works for both heating and cooling as it uses the constant temperature of the ground as its regulating measure.

Forced air

This is the type of system that is seen in many larger buildings such as stores and offices and residential structures. The air is heated in the furnace and then the air is forced into different areas of the home or building through installed vents and ducts. It is called a central heating system. The air is heated using natural gas, oil, electricity, or propane. It can be used for both

cooling and heating but can be noisy. As the air circulates, it can move allergens throughout the building or home.

Steam radiant

This system heats a room using upright units called radiators and use one or two pipes. The water is heated through oil, natural gas, or electricity. They are energy efficient and can quickly warm a room but furniture placement can be difficult because the surrounding areas and wall has to be clear to avoid a fire hazard. They are typically used just for heating so if you want air conditioning you will need a different system.

Radiant heat

This system produces comfortable natural heat that will be consistent throughout the home or building. The centralized pump will use a network of hot water tubes in the ceiling panels or beneath the floor to distribute the heat. The boiler used to heat the water is powered by electricity, natural gas, oil, or propane. It can take awhile to heat the room because the water needs to be heated before it can be circulated. Cooling is not an option with this system so you will have to have a separate system.
