In- Line or Straight Engine The inline engine or

straight engine is aninternal combustionengine with allcylinders mounted in astraight line, or planealong the crankcase.

The single bank of cylinders may beoriented in either avertical or an inclinedplane with all thepistons driving acommon crankshaft.

The inline layout is inperfect primarybalance and confers adegree of mechanical

simplicity which makesit popular for economy

In- Line or Straight Engine

The inline engine or straight engine is an internal combustionengine with all cylinders mounted in a straight line, or planealong the crankcase. The single bank of cylinders may beoriented in either a vertical or an inclined plane with all thepistons driving a common crankshaft. Where it is inclined, it is

sometimes called a slant-four. In a specification chart or whenan abbreviation is used, an inline-four engine is listed either asI4 or L4 (for longitudinal, to avoid confusion between the digit 1and the letter I).

The inline layout is in perfect primary balance and confers adegree of mechanical simplicity which makes it popular foreconomy cars.[1] However, despite its simplicity, it suffers froma secondary imbalance which causes minor vibrations in smallerengines. These vibrations become worse as engine size andpower increase, so the more powerful engines used in largercars generally are more complex designs with more than fourcylinders.

Rotary Engine. The rotary engine was

an early type of internal-combustionengine, usuallydesigned with an oddnumber of cylinders perrow in a radial

configuration, in whichthe crankshaftremained stationaryand the entire cylinderblock rotated around it.Its main applicationwas in aviation,although it also sawuse in a few earlymotorcycles and cars.

Boxer or Flat EngineA flat engine is an internalcombustion engine withmultiple pistons that movein a horizontal plane.

Typically, the layout hascylinders arranged in twobanks on either side of asingle crankshaft and isgenerally known as theboxer, or horizontally-opposed engine.

Not to be confused withopposed-piston engines,which are mechanicallydifferent.

This is the concept patentedin 1896 by engineer KarlBenz, eight years after hestarted producing theworld's first successfulautomobiles.

Boxer or Flat Engine Flat engines offer a

low centre of gravity andthereby may offer a driveconfiguration with betterstability and control.

Boxer engines got theirname because each pair of pistons movessimultaneously in and outrather than alternately, likeboxers clashing their gloved

fists together before a fight.Boxer engines have proved tobe highly successful with upto eight cylindersin automobiles and up to sixcylinders in motorcycles.

W- tech Engines The W engine is a

specific type of reciprocating / pistoninternal combustionengine configuration.

The cylinder banksresemble the letter W,in the same way a Vengine resembles theletter V.

There have been threeentirely different

implementations of thisconcept: one with threebanks of cylinders, onewith four banks, andone with two banks of cylinders and two

crankshafts.-

W- tech EnginesVolkswagen Group created thefirst successful automotive Wengine, with the introduction of its W8. The Cylinder headsaround a single crankshaft for atotal of four banks of cylinders.For this reason, the four-bankconfiguration is sometimes, andmore accurately, referred to as a

"VV" ("vee-vee" or "double-vee")or "VR", to distinguish it from thetraditional three-bank "W" design(the earlier W8 combined twoVR4 engines.)

The W8 was used in the B5.5Volkswagen Passat and the W12is used in the VolkswagenPhaeton, the Volkswagen

Touareg, though in the latterapplication, the engine has beenhighly modified by Bugatti, andfitted with twin turbochargers. As

a result, it produces considerablymore power than the original
