Residents of Parow Park havemixed emotions over the plansthat the City of Cape Town haveto place a housing safety unit atthis block of flats.

The aim of the unit is to preventanti-social behaviour at the flatsthrough the enforcement of by-lawsthus protecting the residents, dealwith crime and improve quality oflife of the occupants.

Residents say they are happy, butthere is still a bit of scepticism as

to whether it will work as previousattempts have failed.

The Parow Park committee andneighbourhood watch have alsobeen established at the 29 munici-pal blocks of 521 flats on the cornersof Frans Conradie and Giel Bassonroads to stop crime.TygerBurger previously reported

that the problems at the flats suchas illegal occupants, drug abuse andtrading in drugs, prostitution, van-dalism, theft, vagrancy, securityrisks, the non payment of rent andservices, public swearing and disre-spect have spiralled out of control

(“Belhamels regeer nog,” Tyger-Burger, 21 December 2011).

The city has started the new unitwhich was created to combat andinvestigate instances of lease agree-ment violations, while protectingcity assets against harm and van-dalism.

The unit could be set up at ParowPark premises where all the rele-vant checks will take place.

“The new unit will enforce thecity’s by-laws with respect to illegaland anti-social activities, while alsoensuring that those residents livingin city-owned housing are the right-

ful occupants in terms of leaseagreements,” says JP Smith, may-oral committee member for safetyand security.

“This is part of the city’s commit-ment to ensuring that Cape Town isa caring and safe city. The officershave been empowered to act aspeace officers, having the neces-sary powers to effectively and effi-ciently police the city’s 43 500 rentalstock units. They will be deployedto hotspot areas identified by thehuman settlements directorate,taking a 24-hour availability ap-proach.”

Marieschan Bruwer, a residentfor 23 years and treasurer of theParow Park Committee, says theyhope that the unit will help the com-munity.

“Since I moved in here the areahas changed . It used to be seen asa paradise, but has changed overthe years.

“Residents are happy that meas-ures have been put into place. Weare hopeful that this operation willwork and that we will see the posi-tive side of it and it will run smooth-ly.”

“Think twice before throwing it away.”That is the message from James Vos,chairperson of the subcouncil.

“By recycling and composting, residentscan prevent nearly two kilogrammes of rub-bish per person going to the City of CapeTown’s landfills every day.”

Vos is actively involved in organising sev-eral recycling events in partnership with thecity’s solid waste management departmentto encourage home recycling.

According to Vos the municipal drop-offsites throughout the area, namely AkademieStreet inWelgelegen,OrangeStreet inTyger-dal and 5th Avenue in Parow have proved tobe highly useful.

“We need to do all that we can to reducethe amount of waste we place in our wheelie

bins. An additional bonus to this good prac-tice is that our bins will become less and lessattractive to the teams of rubbish sifters thatdescend on our neighbourhoods come binday,” says Vos.

He explains that recycling is not difficult.“All it takes is another domestic swing-top

bin. Place dry waste, such as paper, card-board and plastic bags, rinsed and dry plasticcontainers and bottles, glass, and cans, inthis recycling bin.”

In terms of the types of recyclables whichcan be dropped off at the centres, this in-cludes most clean, dry recyclables, for exam-ple paper, cardboard,most plastics except forPVC (which is not recycled in the WesternCape), scrap metal, cans, glass bottles andjars.

He also urges the community to report lit-

tering and illegal dumping.“Provide the registration number of the

vehicle offloading the waste, and the locationwhere the waste is being dumped,” says Vos.

“Recycling and keeping our communitiesclean of rubbish is still an issue which needsheightened awareness.”

He said that though there are many recy-cling igloos dotted around the area, they areeither being misused, whereby people aredumping all sorts of rubbish in and aroundthem or many residents are not using themat all.

Safety Unit moving inParow police are urging residents to as-sist in identifying a woman who was kil-led by an oncoming train on Sunday.

It is alleged that the women in her 30sallegedly threw herself in front of a trainat the Tygerberg station.

“According to witnesses thewoman threw herself in front ofthe train at 15:40,” says Lieute-nant Kevin Jacobs, the Parowpolice spokesperson.

“Police are still investigatingthe case and are urging peopleto come forward if they may bemissing a relative or friend. Af-ter the identity has been esta-blished the motive behind thesuicide will be investigated.”

“Community demands and budgetary con-straints experienced by line departments ne-cessitate that some subcouncil ward alloca-tion funds be utilised to supplement depart-mental expenditure,” says Clive Justus,chairperson of Subcouncil 4.

The available funds will be allocated to-wards:

. Litter picking up and cleaning up bycommunities.

. The Rent-A-Cop project has been intro-duced. It is believed that the visibility of anofficer patrolling the hotspots and appre-hending possible suspects would alleviatesome of these concerns.

. Upgrading of existing reading rooms.

. Installation of water management devic-es and energy dispensers to existing soupkitchen containers.

. Public functions for senior residentswith the focus on elderly people in order toraise awareness regarding council policies

such as indigent grants and rates rebates.. The upgrading of various city-owned

flats, such as Trinity Place, where the win-dows and doors will be replaced.

Confusion reigns as a man is left furiousafter he was allegedly taken for a ride bya Cravenby driving school academy, butthe academy in question begs to differ.

Johan Marais alleges that he paid the sumof R2 200 for a package deal consisting ofeight lessons, but on the day of his Code 10driving licence test he was left stranded atthe Parow traffic department.

The Bellville man is irate after he allegedlywaited for hours for the driving instructorto appear but to no avail.

“After seeing the advertisement I contact-ed the driving school,” says Marais.

“I paid the full amount on 1 March to a mancalled Habas. I made an appointment to passout and I informed the driving school. I sawhow they wrote it down in their diary.”

Marais says he had seven lessons and hisfinal lesson was supposed to be on the dayof his driving test – Monday 11 June at 09:00.

“I was at the traffic department at 06:30waiting for my driving instructor to arrivebut no one came. I called the office numeroustimes but no one answered.

“At 08:55 the traffic officer came and I toldhim what had happened. They laughed whenImentionedhis (Habas’) name, they saidpeo-ple had come to the traffic department beforecomplaining about him and he had done itbefore.

“The traffic officer told me that there was

nothing he could do because I didn’t have atruck and couldn’t pass out. I was so upsetI called their office altogether about 20 timesbut still nothing.”

A disappointed Marais then walked to theoffice of the driving school in Cravenby.

“I was so upset I asked them what was go-ing on. At first they said I was supposed tobe at the driving school, then I told them thatis a lie. They then said that the truck was bro-ken. I was so angry I needed my driver’s li-cence for my job.”

Amanda van Derril, Marais’s fiancée, saysit is so upsetting to think that people do thisto other people.

“I went on Facebook and asked if anyonehad been affected by the driving school. I wasastoundedathowmanypeople came forwardand said they were also conned by this man,”she says.

“One woman said he ‘conned’ her familysix years ago. It’s disturbing to hear that thisman is still doing this so many years later.I might not get my money back, but I wantto warn people of him. I don’t want anyoneelse to go through what we did.”

Marais had to drive all the way to a trafficdepartment in Saldanha to make an appoint-ment because he needs his driver’s licenceurgently.

TygerBurger contacted the Pro-ActiveDriving Academy, but they said that theywere not liable to divulge any informationto the paper unless a case had been made atthe police station against them.

Inwoners kla al jare lank oor diestortingsterrein en die Stad het on-langs studies laat doen om te kykhoe die verkeer, die geraas en diestof die gebied beïnvloed. Die resul-tate van hierdie studies, asook dieimpak wat die terrein op openbarevervoer het, het die Stad op ’n andermeer geskikte terrein laat besluit.

Die Parow-gemeenskap gaan groot prethê nadat ’n miniatuur-wedrenbaan, ’n so-genaamde Rattlesnake Speedway, deurdie Scale Oval-wedrenvereniging geopenis.

Die baan is verlede maand by SimondreVillas 10 in Parowstraat in gebruik geneem.Volgens die vereniging is die opening ’n myl-paal in die geskiedenis van dié soort wed-rensport en dit sal altyd hulle doelwit bly omalmal toegang tot die sport te gee.

“Die baan maak toekomsdeure oop vir onssport,” sê Ettienne O’ Connell van die ScaleOval-wedrenvereniging. “Die doel wat RudiNieuwoudt, die bouer van die baan, ChristoEllis, die eienaar, en ek gehad het, is nie netvir onsself nie, maar vir almal wat ons passiedeel. Ek praat natuurlik van mense wat wilregistreer by die Wes-Kaapse sportraad, en

wat provinsiale of federasiekleure wil ver-werf.”

“Rudi en ek kom al van kindsbeen saamendeesdae raakons saamgrys.Hy iskreatiefen skitterend met sy hande, en dit wat onsvandag hier begin het, is te danke aan Rudise handewerk. Hy het ’n passie vir die sporten ek dink Christo is ’n getuie daarvan,” sêO’ Connell. “Ek het al kontak gemaak metdie sportraad om die proses van registrasieaan die gang te kry. nette ’n danspartytjie gaan hou waar sy geldgaan insamel sodat sy een van hierdie ver-voermiddels kan koop.

Die sangeres Cecily Immelman het besluitom sommer haar verjaarsdagparty-tjie op dieselfde aand te hou en die uit-einde was ’n tweedehandse rolstoelvir Franette.

“Cecily het R7 200 in my rekeningbetaal en ek het die stoel toe by DixonBatteries in Bellville gekoop,” verdui-delik Franette.

Nou kan sy oral rondkerjakker.Cecily reken dit was ’n baie bedry-

wige dag vir haar en Franette. “Dieure het so vinnig verbygevlieg waarander dae net stilgestaan het. Baiemense het egter ingespring en gehelpmet die verskillende uitdagings vandie dag,” verduidelik sy.

Die saal het daardie aandpragtig ge-lyk met mooi blomme en ballonne.Sangers het gesing, maar vir Franetteen Cecily was die feit dat almal so lek-ker met mekaar gesels het, “soos mu-siek in die ore”.

Cecily het later uitgevind dat Fra-nette se dogter, Mackyla, dit vreeslikgeniet om kitaar te speel. Sy het toedeur haar netwerk ’n kitaar vir Mac-kyla aangeskaf.

Franette en Cecily het elke bydraeop hierdie spesiale aand ongelooflikwaardeer en wil elkeen bedank wat ’nverskil gemaak het in Franette se le-we.

“Daar was selfs mense van Johannesburgen Gansbaai!” lag Franette voordat sy weereens vir Cecily bedank vir al haar moeite enhulp.

Intussen het Franette met haar Shoprideral tot in Ruyterwacht gery! Sy het selfs eenkeer gaan staan, maar haar ma was vinnigbyderhand om te help. Franette het onlangsgehoor dat iemand anders miskien vir haar’n splinternuwe Shoprider gaan koop, so syhou styf duimvas.

HouTygerBurgerdop vir nog verwikkelin-ge, want soos dinge nou verloop, lyk dit ofFranette se storie baie mense geraak het.

Twee slagoffers van ’n beweerde laven-telhaan met ’n oënskynlike identiteits-krisis waarsku ander vroue om op die uit-kyk te wees vir dié man wat met systroopsoet beloftes geld uit hulle kry.

Hoewel minstens sewe vroue reeds dieslagoffer was van die man wat homself as adokter of veearts voordoen, word slegs tweekriminele sake tans by polisiestasies in dienoordelike voorstede ondersoek.

Albei vroue het sake van diefstal en intimi-dasie geopen teen die man bekend as Gert Ja-cobus van Tonder, maar ook die naam G.J.en Van Rooyen gebruik.

Die vroue se verhale stem baie ooreen.Kort ná G.J. hulle ontmoet, “leen” hy glo

geld vir verskeie redes. ’n Gunstelingrede isvir die aankoop van eksotiese voëls - sy stok-perdjie - ’n ander is vir mediese voorraad.

Een keer was dit “om mense te betaal watsy swembad herstel het” en in een geval selfsvir ’n televisie en DVD-speler. Van sy belof-tes om die geld terug te betaal, kom niks.

Twee van die slagoffers met wie G.J. in dieafgelope maande uitgegaan het, het hom opdie sosiale aanlynnetwerk Badoo ontmoet en‘n derde vrou het hy by ’n plaaslike casinogenader. Een van die vroue, Vanessa Bagminvan Panorama, het hom as G.J. van Tonderby ’n plaaslike casino ontmoet. “Hy het virmy gesê hy is ’n veearts.” Toe Vanessa se ek-sman Johan Maritz egter sy honde na G.J.se praktyk wou neem, het hy skielik sy storieverander en gesê hy het nie ’n praktyk nie,maar locum. Dié voorval het Johan onrustiggemaak en hy het ’n privaatspeurder aange-stel. “Ons het uitgevind 18 bedrogsake is tus-sen 2001 en 2012 teen hom geopen, maar aldie sake behalwe een is deur die klaers terug-getrek,” sê Johan.

Intussen het G.J. by Vanessa ingetrek.Vier dae later het hy gevra vir R12 000 om

mediese voorraad aan te koop. “Ek het virhom R5 000 geleen,” sê sy. Vanessa moes ookweer uithaal en wys toe G.J. nog voëls aange-koop het en hy haar besonderhede verskafhet vir die verhaling van die uitstaande be-drag. Sy moes noodgedwonge betaal nadatdie voëlverkoper haar met die gereg gedreighet. Haar minnaar se ontrouheid het aan dielig gekom toe hy een oggend haar motor ge-leen het en sy dit met die ingeboude opspo-ringstelsel na Somerset-Wes gevolg het. Díshoe sy van Valerie uitgevind het.

Valerie (’n skuilnaam) van Somerset-Wessê G.J. “mors nie tyd nie”. “Twee dae ná ekhom op Badoo ontmoet het, het ons mekaarpersoonlik ontmoet. Hy het gesê hy is ’n dok-ter en op sy foto op Badoo staan hy ewe voor’n Mediclinic met ’n steteskoop om sy nek,”sê Valerie. Vir haar het hy vertel hy woonin Plattekloof. Reeds op die eerste aand vanhul ontmoeting wou hy R2 000 kontant leenom mense te betaal wat sy swembad herstelhet. “Ek het slegs R1 800 by my gehad, watek vir hom geleen het,” sê sy. “Ek was sekerbaie naïef, maar hy lyk baie ordentlik,” sêValerie. Nie lank daarna nie het G.J. voorge-stel hy en Valerie begin ’n besigheid. Sy moesR30 000 gee om eksotiese voëls by ’n veilingte koop terwyl hy die hokke sou verskaf.

Die twyfelagtige vryer in die middelpuntvan die situasie is ene George van Greunen.

“My voorletters is G.J en my “regte van”is Van Greunen maar weens iets “persoon-liks” tussen my en my pa het ek my van ver-ander na Van Rooyen,” verduidelik hy.

Verder sê hy hy sóú in ’n stadium die VanTonder-van aangeneem het. George het ont-ken dat hy ooit beweer het sy naam is GertJacobus. George sê hy woon nie meer in dieKaap nie. Hy voer aan dat hy en Vanessa wel’n verhouding gehad en toe ’n besigheid be-gin. “Sy het klomp liegstories vir die polisiegaan vertel.” Volgens hom wil Vanessa enhaar vriende hom “in die hande kry om hompak slae te gee”.

No matter how young or old yourchild is, every parent knows that there aretimes you simply have to trust that thechild will make the right choice.

In this era of internet surfing, constanttexting and sharing info over social net-works, this is even more true.

However, it’s only when we hear of chil-dren “just down the road” who are miss-ing, most probably as a result of social me-dia encounters which lead to face to faceintroductions that we sit up and take stockof our own efforts to avoid this.

Imagine the terror of realising yourchild is missing. After some frantic callsto her friends, you realise that she mightbe trapped in the horrible claws of someshady character on Facebook. The policetell you that she may soon be the victimof human trafficking or prostitution.

The only way parents can try and pro-tect their children is to teach them valuesand set a good example. Then trust that itwas enough for them to make the rightchoices under difficult circumstances.

And when they give in under the pres-sures of peers and bad adults, they shouldknow they can come to their parentswhere they will be loved.

“They get treated like doorstops.”

Harsh words from a mother of a specialneeds child, who admits to once having thesame kind of attitude towards disabled peo-ple.

We see them sitting at a shop entrance. Peo-ple walk past pretending not to notice. Somemight stare and others will stop briefly to adda coin to the tin.

“I was that person,” says FaranaazRinquest. “I used to look at people and I feltsorry for them, it’s not to say people are notconcerned or compassionate, but they don’treally understand.”

Faranaaz’s reality changed on 23 January2008, a date now engraved on her memory. Aheart procedure on her son Ziyaad went hor-ribly wrong and left the then five-year-oldwith severe cerebral palsy.

Faranaaz recalls, “It was worse than deathfor me, that was how I felt, because they gaveme someone else back.” She resigned fromher job and over the past four years most ofher life has revolved around taking care ofZiyaad.

About a year ago things started to regressout of nowhere. Ziyaad’s mobility sloweddown, he couldn’t swallow properly and he

developed apnea, where there is an impulsefrom the brain to stop breathing.

Increasing episodes of apnea led to his re-admission to Red Cross. After two months inhospital, with his dad at his side 24/7, Ziyaadis now back at home. His parents want to givehim comfort care.

Faranaaz explains, “The doctors asked mewhat I think, whether he is regressing towards

death, and I said,well he’s definite-ly going some-where and it’s notthe positive way.

“They saidwhenever we treathim, we’re nothealing him,we’re just inter-vening with theprocess that hewill eventuallynot be here anymore. We’reputting his bodythrough morework, because hehas pushed fur-ther than whatthey expected forhis condition.

“He will have no further surgery as anyanaesthetic will be deadly. He cannot evenbe resuscitated. So we decided to give himcomfort care for these last months. No more

antibiotics, no more drips, no more interven-tions because his body is just doing too muchwork.”

The Rinquests are just one of 28 familiesthat Iris House Children’s Hospice is current-ly involved with. Iris House is one of thisyear’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! con-cert’s beneficiaries, of which TygerBurger isthe media sponsor.

Not only do they offer emotional support,but also assist with day to day necessities andinZiyaad’s case a suctionmachinewasdonat-ed to help keep his airways clear. “When I ini-tially spoke to Sue it was the first time I heardan organisation speak about so many anglesof support that can be offered,” saidFaranaaz.

Founder Sue van der Linde feels stronglyabout a holistic approach – in order to meetthe needs of the children and families moreeffectively, the charity has concentrated itsefforts firstly on providing care in the fami-lies’ own homes.

Metal bands will be invadingBuckleys in Edward Street thisweekend for To the Stage Two.

To the Stage is set to become aregular series of events on thenorthern suburbs calendar thanksto Numero Productions.

Alex Toua, from Numero, ex-plains that the concept was startedby Charl Strutt and Neil Schoe-man, who had been hosting rockshows in the area.

Alex, who is friends with Charl,was asked to help them break intoa heavier genre.

Buckleys recently acquired atheir entertainment licence andhosting the event there would helpNumero promote To the Stage andBuckleys as a live entertainmentvenue.

The first To the Stage was hostedin June as a rock event. The planis to alternate monthly betweenrock and metal events, giving localbands the opportunity to perform.

TheTo theStage eventnamewaschosen by means of a competition,while their logo was designed bya local art group, City Lights Col-lective.

Paul Bothners has come onboard as a sponsor for the eventsand Mirage Custom Tattoos willbe doing tattoo demonstrations atall the metal events.

Two of the bands performing atTo the Stage Two will be MarchingDead and Suiderbees.

Marching Dead, the brainchildof Igor Crouse, has been goingsince 2007. Their current line-upconsists of Pierre van Niekerk on

guitar, Christiaan Blom on bass,Werner von Waltsleben on drumsand Igor on guitar and vocals.

After a short sabbatical when Ig-or was overseas, the band startedhitting stages again at the begin-ning of the year, after performingat Rock the River.

Marching Dead, who have neverreleased any of their music, arehoping to have their debut EP,with the tongue-in-cheek title, The

Greatest Hits, ready for the showon Saturday.

“I think it’s ridiculous thatwe’ve never released anything,”Igor says, pointing out that mostof their fans know their songswell.

Alex points out that MarchingDead have opened a lot of doors inthe metal community since theirconception.

“They kind of set the level at

which bands are recognised froma professional side,” he says.

Suiderbees is an equally bigname in the metal community,having opened for internationalband, Fleshgod Apocalypse, whenthey toured SA.

The band, who has been togeth-er for about two and a half years,is also busy with its debut album,The Segregation, which they hopeto release in early 2013.

The band is made up of ColeGrainger on drums, Karin Preto-rius on keyboards, Marc Olwageon bass and lead vocals, Divan deKock on lead guitars and backupvocals and Dawie Pretorius onrhythm guitar.

Cole describes their music as “abit of everything”, while Marccalls it: “Epic music with a brutaltwist and a splash of melody”.

Virtuoso choreographer, Cindy van Ack-er, is set to mesmerise Capetonians in amagical mix of body, spirit, sound andrhythm.

The Geneva-based choreographer will bevisiting the southern African region for thefirst time with two solos out of a series of six,which focus on a sober, intimate, virtuosoexploration of body movement, through aslow interaction with gravity.

The South African premiere of the two so-los, Lanx and Obtus will take place at the Na-tional Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

In Cape Town she will present Fractie,which will be followed by a talk from the art-ist and a screening of the dance films madeon the six existing solos.

As part of the Cape Town experience, therewill also be workshops with youth dancersand other dance companies at Joseph StoneAuditorium, hosted by Eoan productions,

delivered by the artist. These will precedethe Lanx and Obtus performance at the samespace.

Trained in classical ballet, Cindy Van Ack-er first worked in the Flanders Royal Ballet,Belgium. After joining Geneva’s Grand The-atre, she began creating her own pieces in1994, and launched an international careerwith Corps 00:00 at the Geneva ADC in 2002.

She will be in Cape Town from 8 July withworkshops for Eoan Group youth dancers,youth from schools, dance schools and com-munities.

On Tuesday 10 July she will be at HiddinghHall at UCT from 17:30 with a performanceof Fractie and a talk and screening of thedance films.

The wheels are in motion withthe upcoming South AfricanElite Amateur Boxing Champi-onship – an attempt to regain theglory days of yesteryear in CapeTown.

The Western Cape Sports Schoolin Kuils River will host the champi-onship from tomorrow to 7 July.

“The glory days I refer to werewhen the likes of Cape boxingchampions such as Skeleton Mbo-ma, Sydney Hoho, Bashew Sibaca,Sipho Mange, Chris and BramleyWhiteboy dominated the South Af-

rican boxing scene,” said Dr IvanMeyer, provincial minister of cul-tural affairs and sport at a medialaunch last week.

All nine provinces will be repre-sented in this prestigious event.

“I am particularly pleased that fe-male boxers will also be participat-ing in this event as we have to en-sure that greater access happens sothat all boxers, irrespective of gen-der, are given the opportunity toparticipate and develop to their fullpotential.”

This championship is seen as theperfect platform for the revival of

Western Cape and Cape Town box-ing.

The hard work starts now to en-sure that development grooms thenew crop of future stars.

“Boxing must play its role in pro-viding our disaffected youth withan alternative that they are exposedto on a daily basis in their respec-tive communities.
