The City has provided funding for this pro-

cess. Taxis will then enter the ranking area

fromPictonStreet and leave via the gates ne-

A walkabout with council members and

Metrorail staff highlighted matters such as

broken sewer pipes, insufficient fencing, the

securing of unused subways to prevent litte-

ring anddumping aswell as for station secu-

rity to stop the making of fires.

I am pleased with the goodwill displayed

byMetrorail staff to remedy the appalling si-

He added that the subcouncil was commit-

ted to assisting with landscaping the

    grounds.

In a recent survey of street people of the

immediate vicinity of the Parow station, the

    department of social development foundma-

    Ravensmead, Leonsdale and Elsies River,

but find it rewarding to be on the street due

to the generosity of the locals, Justus said.

Decayed buildings in Station Road, Parow,

have been earmarked as canvases for an ex-

    tended streetart project.

    Now the Greater Tygerberg Partnership

(GTP) is looking for ideas, themes and spon-

sorship to make this a reality.

Public art and art in action can be used

as tools for urban regeneration, and this is

not a new idea, it is something seen around

the world, said Karin Rautenbach, who is

driving the project for the GTP, at a presen-

tation for Parowbusiness owners during the

April subcouncil 4 meeting last week.

We want to make people stop, look and

think. Street art is an expression of social

cohesion, it is art for everyone. By doing

this, we are able to take art out of galleries

and bring it to the people, she said.

The GTPwill host the Parow Station Road

Art in Action competition from 15 May to 15

June, allowing street artists to submit pro-

posals. Six to eight artworkswill be selected.

Weare looking for quickwins in this area

and this will be a quick win. We aim to com-

plete the first phase by the end of June this

year. Phase two involves schools to help us

    withpavement and installationart that com-

plements the street art, Rautenbach said.

V To enter the Station Road Street Art competition

or for more information about the project, contact

Karin Rautenbach on 021 949 7419 or email her at

    [email protected].

    Parow streets to

    come alive with art

The GTP wants street art in Parow, such as

seen in Woodstock, to become a talking point

and a way to turnaround decayed areas. PHOTO:

IrisHouses plans for the structure she and

her team had brought to reality.

We had a break in last night, Sue in-

    formed TygerBurger on Thursday morn-

    ing.

She said the security company was very

quick to react, but they suffered some loss-

    es.

We only lost the Mac (computer), petty

cash tin and our brand new hard drive

with all our video footage on we are pray-

ing the company has a backup, she said.

    Who steals from aChildrens Hospice?

On TygerBurgers visit, Sue provided a

tour of the premises, showing off the newly

functional spaces created during phase 1

    of their huge clean-up operation.

The centre opened to wide media inter-

est on 14 April, with the Premier of the

Western Cape, Helen Zille, unveiling the

    plaque.

During our visit, Sue mentioned they

needed to build a wall but for a different

reason at the time than security.

It appeared that some of the neighbours

who work with fork-lift trucks, had taken

to using the centres newly laid driveway

    for their own purposes.

The driveway isnt made for that kind

of heavy-duty wear and tear. Its meant as

a quick and easily accessible way for par-

ents to roll up our children who are in

    wheelchairs, she said.

But now one of the neighbours is using

the drive way to turn his big trucks

    around.

The house, as it stands on the tranquil

grounds of the hospital as a former employ-

ee residence, was in a state of utter neglect

when Sue first laid eyes on it.

We got lost on the hospital grounds and

ended up at (this) property. I knew we had

to have it, and we did. Eventually.

The end of phase 1 of the repairs to the

house was a very long road filled with red

tape, broken roof tiles, finger deep grime

and filth and the accompanying cockroach-

es, a stolen geyser and piping, with the

brass window latches also having been sto-

    len..

But with the help of care staff and some

of the parents and family members of the

155 children serviced by Iris House across

the Western Cape, the home was rebuilt

with love, care and lots of fresh paint and

    cement.

Every paving brick was sourced by par-

ents, as were the roof tiles. The parents

went from dumpsite to dumpsite in search

of the rooftiles. And they found them.

Then, not two weeks after the fanfare of

    the opening, the burglary happened.

Perhaps you could mention in the arti-

cle we are desperately needing to put up the

wall and access gate for the property, Sue

    said.

The Rainbow and Forest roomswere spe-

    cially adapted to accommodate overnight

stays for the children and their family, but

    Sue is taking no chances.

After this (burglary) I am not going to

allow overnight care at the hospice until

this is done. I have to ensure the safety of

our children and carers, she said.

    Bellville police spokesperson Fienie

Nimb, said a case of housebreaking had

been opened and was being investigated.

The police were at the opening function

and we strongly condemn the incident,

    said Nimb.

n Ontstelde leser, ook n Stad Kaapstad-

    werknemer, hetTygerBurgeronlangs ge-

in volle munisipale uniform binne-in n

    stadstrok gel en slaap het.

Di ontstigte leser werk glo al 23 jaar

vir die Stad. Hy s hy is om 13:30 verby

di werkers en kon sy o nie glo nie toe

die drywer eerstens in die openbaar

    staan en urineer.

Hy s die mans het op die hoek van die

Horskool D.F.

in uniform. In my 23 jaar in die Stad se

diens het ek nog nooit so iets tegekom

nie! het hy verontwaardig laat hoor.

Die Stad het by monde van Leonore

van der Walt, raadslid, verduidelik dat

enige werker geregtig is op n tussenpo-

se. As dit hul etenstyd was waartydens

    aanvaarbaar.

So n saak kan net opgevolg word in-

A group of Du Noon mothers say they are

no longer asking theWestern Cape educati-

on department nicely for transport for their

    primary school children.

Instead, theyplan toprotest in front of the

Metro North Education District offices in

Parow until their application for a school

    bus is granted.

There are 357 children from Du Noon

who go toMilnerhof Primary School and do

not have transport, says school board cha-

    irperson Bandlakazi Makabane.

She says their children were referred to

    Milnerhof because Du Noon Primary

    School was full.

Up until recently, the children were ta-

ken to school by bus as a favor by a man,

known to the parents only as Jacob, but ac-

cording to Makabane, he was arrested and

fined R22 000 last week for over loading his

bus and will not transport them any more.

The children had not been to school for

five days when the group started their pro-

test. On 24 April they demanded to speak

to Dr Heine Brand, director of the Metro

    North Education District.

They say an application for transport has

    been rejected on numerous occasions.

Deputy director, Suzette van Zyl, came to

meet the groupoutside the offices. Surroun-

ded by the angrymothers and scores of chil-

dren in school uniform, she said the appli-

cation is being processed as a matter of ur-

gency. The group gave her three working

days to deliver a bus to them.

Police have warned Parow residents that

the station has experienced high numbers

    of common robberies being reported.

Parow police spokesperson Lt Kevin Wil-

liams says the robberies occured in Parow

    CBDparallel toVoortrekkerRoad,Glenlily,

Station Road near the Post Office and at the

Spar shopping centre in McIntyre Road.

The robberies usually take place on Tu-

esdays and Thursdays between 15:00 and

18:00, he says, adding that jewellery and

    cell phones are popular items.

Where possible dont use your cell phone

in these areas. Do not flash valuable items

in public and preferably remove valuable

jewellery items or cover them when you vi-

    sit these areas, Williams says.
