kan gebruik vir sy liegstories as hy vir pe-trolgeld bedel.

Gwen de Jager van Gladstonestraat sê diénetjiese geklede, fris man met kaalgeskeer-de kop wat homself as Johan Vermeulenvoorgestel het, het verlede week by haarkom aanklop om R100 te vra vir petrol.

“Hy het gesê hy is die pa van twee siek kin-ders wat verder af in ons straat bly. Ek weetvan die twee kinders, maar ek ken nie diemense nie. Die man het dringend geld nodiggehad vir petrol, omdat hy dokter toe moesjaag met die twee,” sê De Jager. Hy het belo-we om dit daardie aand nog terug te betaal.De Jager sê sy het nie eers twee keer daaroorgedink nie en vir Vermeulen R100 gegee,maar het later die dag snaaks daaroor begin

voel.“Ek stap toe af na die huis, wat hy gesê het

aan hom behoort en daar ontmoet ek virPaul Badenhorst, die regte pa van die kin-ders,” sê sy. Badenhorst sê hy het nog nooitvan Vermeulen gehoor nie. “Dit moet ie-mand wees wat gereeld hier verbyloop en sovan ons dinge weet, of andersins iemand watinligting van die internet af gekry het,” sêhy. Badenhorst sê hy het twee siek kindersen een van hulle word tuis deur verpleeg-sters versorg. Hy sê sy gesin praat nie metvreemdelinge oor hulle sake nie.

Sonder petrolTygerBurger het in April verlede jaar be-

rig oor ’n man wat hom voordoen as ’n inwo-ner van Oakglen wat geld by sy “bure” vraomdat sy voertuig glo sonder petrol is.

’n Inwoner van Oakglen het toe aan diekoerant vertel hoe dié man haar bure, watsy nie ken nie, oortuig het hy is met haargetroud. Hy het selfs geweet met watter mo-

is dieselfde man wat ná die koerant vroeëroor hom berig het, stil geraak het, maar nouweer opnuut sy liegstories opdis. Swart sêhy is onlangs weer so gekul.

“Die man kom met die storie by jou aandat hy sy vrou moet gaan haal by haar werk.Dan kom die storie dat hy nie brandstof hetnie en sy het al die geld en bankkaart byhaar. Hy is nou in groot nood en benodigdringend R100 vir brandstof. Sy 4x4 is maarswaar op brandstof. Hy sal die R100 weer omhalfsewe die aand terugbring.

“Hy sê hulle woon net hier onder in diestraat en hy en sy vrou en hul twee kindersstap gereeld hier verby. Hy ken ook hierdieen daardie oom en nog ander mense hierrond en oom At hier anderkant,” sê hy.Swart sê die man is ongeveer 1,7 meter lanken sterkgeboumet ’nprominente sterkgesigen ken.

“Hy kam sy hare agtertoe wat tot in sy nek

hang en hy het ’n heel netjiese versorgdebaard. Met sy mond skort daar egter niks,”sê hy.

Die Tygerberg-kunssentrum inParow het op 25 Augustus dieeerste van hulle openingsaan-

de vir die Tygerbergse eisteddfod-kunsuitstalling gehou.

Dié jaarlikse instelling, wat noual vir die tiende agtereenvolgendejaar hier gehou word, het vanjaarmeer as 800 inskrywings vir visuelekuns en keramiek ontvang.

Volgens Fransonette Swart, hoofvandie skool en saammetChristineBrownbridge, mede-beoordelaarvan die eisteddfod, het hulle van-jaar byna 700 inskrywings vangraad 1 tot 4 ontvang en was diewerk in die algemeen van uitstaan-de gehalte.

Sy sê sy was veral beïndruk metvan die laerskole se keramiekwerk.

Die uitstalling het twee openings-aande op 25 en 26 Augustus gehadom al die deelnemers te kan akkom-modeer.

Op dié aande is trofees vir uitne-mendheid aan die kategoriewen-ners uitgedeel.

Dieuitstallingduur tot 18Septem-ber en kan elke weeksdag van 09:00tot 17:00 besigtig word. Toegang kosR5.

Die Tygerberg-kunssentrum het’n ope dag gehouop 27Augustus van09:00 tot 17:00.

Die doel vandie ope dag is omaanleerders en ouers die geleentheid tebied om die sentrum te besoek, diefasiliteite enklaskamers te besigtig.

Op 28 Augustus het bied die sen-trum ’n inligtingsaand om19:00 aanvir ouers en leerders in graad 9 en10 wat volgende jaar ontwerp of vi-suele kunste as vak wil neem.

“Ons sal ’n bekendstelling doenwaarin ons verduidelik wat die ver-skil tussen die vakke is en ook watons skool alles bied. Leerders souook ’n aanlegtoets kon doen as hullesou belangstel om volgende jaarkuns by die sentrum te neem,” sêSwart.V Kontak Lidia Fourie 021 9399293 vir meerinligting.

Wat is depressie?Daar is al baie oor depressie gepraat engeskryf. Tog bly dit steeds een van diesiektetoestande wat dikwels nie regverstaan en hanteer word nie.Depressie is al genoem die siekte van

ons tyd; die kanker van die gees. Depres-sie is die onwelkome besoeker in menigelewe. Dit bestaan in verskillende vorms,en neem verskillende maskers aan.Enige persoon kan depressie kry. Dit

kom voor onder enige klas, ryk of arm,mans en vroue, bejaardes, volwassenesen kinders. Depressie ontsien ook niestand of beroep nie.Die hartseer is dat mense na ’n

depressielyer sal verwys as iemand wat’n soort mistroostige of “af-gevoel” heten homself moet regruk. Depressieverdwyn nie bloot wanner die depressie-lyer begin positief dink nie. So ’nverkeerde aanname maak dat die lyernet nog meer kan vereensaam enhulpeloos voel. Ons gebruik dikwels dieterm depressie in ons alledaagse gesprek-ke, byvoorbeeld: “My rugbyspan maakmy so depressief wanneer hulle so swakspeel.” Jy is eintlik net hartseer oorhulle swak spel en nie werklik depres-sief nie. Of: “Dit is regtig depressief omhier te werk.” Wat jy bedoel is dat jyverveeld of ongelukkig is by die werk.Daar is weliswaar ’n groot verskil om

ongelukkig te wees en depressie te hê.Jy kan byvoorbeeld ongelukkig wees oor’n nare ding wat met jou gebeur het,maar jy kan jouself troos en steeds inkontak met die wêreld bly.Wanneer jy egter depressief is, raak jy

geïsoleer van mense. Jy sny jouself vanjou eie emosies af, gee nie meer om nie,en jyself word jou grootste vyand.

Maar wat is depressie dan? Depressieis ’n intense neerslagtigheid (bedrukt-heid, teneergedruktheid) wat in die reëlgepaardgaan met gevoelens van ontoerei-kendheid, onsekerheid, pessimismeomtrent die toekoms, asook sosialeonttrekking en verlaagde psigomotorieseaktiwiteite (Psigologie Woordeboek vanLouw e.a.)Soms is dit nogal moeilik om depressie

te diagnoseer, omrede die simptomeverskil van een persoon na ’n ander.Daar is egter ’n verskeidenheid vansimptome wat redelik algemeen voor-kom. Ek noem kortliks enkele vanhierdie simptome.Een van die algemeenste simptome

van depressie is die effek op ’n mens sefisieke gestel. Depressielyers ondervind’n chroniese moegheid en gebrek aanenergie. Hiermee saam kom slaapver-steurings en verlies van aptyt. Selfshoofpyn en rugpyn kan ’n indikasie vandepressie wees.Depressie het ook ’n invloed op ’n

mens se motivering. Vir ’n depressielyervoel alles sonder hoop en uitsig. Dit kanvir hom voel sy lewe is sinloos. Dikwelstoon die lyer ’n belangeloosheid en ’napatiese houding teenoor sy persoonlikevoorkoms. Hy kan ook belangstellingverloor in sy gunsteling-aktiwiteite en-stokperdjies.Depressie kan jou ook op kognitiewe

A Paint It Forward project will bring to-gether corporate sponsors and individualvolunteers to embrace active volunteerismand decorate the walls of the TygerbergHospital children’s wards with colourfuland inspiring murals on 4 and 11 October.

Paint it Forward is a social responsibilityinitiative by Cape TownAngels that prima-rily supports sustainable developmentprojects through active volunteerism.

The initiative depends on volunteers toboost other social responsibility initiativesin Cape Town.

It is a non-profit company driven byyoung professionals operating in andaround Cape Town. Through commitment,partnership and collaboration, the organi-sation shares “themagic of compassion” bysupporting the growth of sustainable devel-

opment projects, boosting other social re-sponsibility initiatives and linking organi-sations, volunteers andsponsorswithotherworthy charities needing support.

Anybody is welcome to enter the Paint ItForward project by 27 September.

“In general we are working with teamsof maximum four people (friends, family orcolleagues), but if you would like to entera bigger or corporate group, you can justdrop us an email,” says organiser ChrisLategan. Paint, equipment and food will beprovided.

Sue van der Linde’s dream to establishthe best children’s hospice in the coun-try was given a significant boost when

the Western Cape Provincial Governmentrecently made a house available for the or-ganisation.The announcement was made by Van der

Linde, founder of Iris House Children’s Hos-pice, at their annualWinterBall, a fund rais-ing event held at the Table Bay Hotel on Sat-urday night.“Now that we have a property, all funds

raised will go toward renovating this housein order to provide a loving and nurturingenvironment for a child who has reachedend of life,” she said.In its third year, this organisation pro-

vides free community based respite care andcaters for the special needs of children withlife threatening illness or life limiting condi-tions.

Caring for familiesThe organisation is currently caring for

122 families in the northern suburbs, Mfule-ni, Khayelitsha and Vrendenburg fromWelgelegen.WesternCapePremierHelen Zille, who at-

special needs children and this has liftedmuch of the burden off my shoulders. WhenI don’t have the funds or resources, they stepin at the drop of the hat,” she said.“They truly understand what it is like to

Parow police released the year-on-yearcrime statistics for July last week, with thefigures showing an average decrease in in-cidents.Under property crimes, housebreaking

decreased by three cases. Four arrests ontwo cases were made and the majority ofcases were reported in Glenlily, ChurchillEstate, Panorama and Avondale.Business break-ins decreased by 17 cases.

Two arrestsweremade on two cases and ar-eas of concern were Beaconvale, ParowCBD and Glenlily.Theft of motor vehicles decreased by 19

cases and ten arrestsweremade on five cas-es. Hot spots for this crime were ParowEast, Parow CBD, Glenlily and TygerbergHospital.Theft out of or from motor vehicles in-

creased by 13 cases and 14 arrests weremade on seven cases. Glenlily, Parow CBDand Churchill Estate stood out.No murder cases were reported in July

and aggravated robbery increased by twocases. No arrests were made. Glenlily,

ParowCBD, Panorama andFairfield Estatestood out.Robbery with other weapons increased

by 11 cases and two arrests were made ontwo incidents.Common robbery decreased by five cas-

es. Seven arrests were made on six cases.For robbery with other weapons as well

as common robbery, most cases were re-ported in Parow CBD, Glenlily and Tyger-berg station.Assault with grievous bodily harm de-

creased by two cases and one person wasarrested onone case. Itwasmost commonlyreported in Parow CBD, Parow East,Churchill Estate, Fairfield Estate and Bea-convale.Common assault decreased by two cases.

11 arrests were made on nine cases. Areasstanding out here were Parow CBD, Fair-field Estate, Glenlily and Parow Valley.Rape decreased by three cases.No arrests

were made. Incidents took place in Klipkopand Parow Valley.The Parow police attended 1146 com-

plaints during July and the average reac-tion time (broadcast to attendance) was 13minutes and 37 seconds.

since June, is whittling down the field to 15top contestants.Usually only the winner of the competi-

tion would get a chance to experience the re-cording process, but this year organisersCrazy World Production will give all top 15artists the opportunity to record a song.They will have to work for it though.“The idea is for the top 15 to raise the funds

to record, even if it is at a below-cost price,”said CrazyWorld spokesperson Brilynn vanRooyen.“This will teach them to work hard for

New measures are being put in placeto ensure fathers who default ontheir maintenance payments are

brought to book.Initiated by the Democratic Alliance’s

Women’s network (DAWN) and supportedby other political parties, the movementsymbolised by a blue sash over the shoul-der has made headway in only six weeks.MP and leader of DAWN, Denise Robin-

son of Durbanville, spoke to TygerBurgerabout the campaign’s objectives.Robinson says up to 48% of children in

South Africa grow up either without amother or a father, and that in tens of thou-sands of these cases, the absent parent doesnot honour their responsibility to paychild maintenance.“This adds to the downward cycle of pov-

erty as many of these children are then de-nied a proper education,” she said, addingthat this is the single biggest obstacleagainst these children accessing opportu-nities for education.“A littlemore than amonth from launch-

ing the campaign, DAWN, along with theJustice department, National Credit Regu-lator, credit bureaus and the Departmentof Trade and Industry, have managed totighten up on credit regulations that willsee to it that maintenance defaulters arebrought to book,” said Robinson.In consultation with the above entities,

new draft regulations for the credit indus-try will ensure maintenance defaults re-flect a person’s credit record for five years,or until a court rescinds a default judge-ment.Furthermore, maintenance payments

will have to be included in all affordabilityassessments when applying for new loans,and clients will be required to declare ifthey have any maintenance default judge-ments against them.Robinson says, these draft amendments

have been published in the GovernmentGazette for public input, after which it willbe promulgated.In addition to this, the Department of

Justice has also drafted a Bill to amend theMaintenance Act to enable credit bureausto track downmaintenance defaulters whocan’t be found by the courts.This Bill will empower credit bureaus to

After almost a year away from the stage,Reburn have emerged from their “wri-ting cave” with a brand new album.

The indie rock outfit recently launchedtheir secondalbum,Majestic, five years aftertheir debut-release, All Tied Up.

Frontman Scottie Moore says Majestic isvery different from their first album andthey have started changing some of their ol-der songs to keep them in linewith their newmaterial.

“The sound is a bit more epic, I would sayit’s a bit more mature.” While there is stilla definite indie influence on the album, Scot-tie points out there are also splashes of rockand an alternative style to be heard.

Living legendHe points out that the bandmade a consci-

ous decision about a year ago that they weregoing to make music that they listen to andenjoy playing.

“Wewanted tomakemusic thatwe’re hap-py playing, because you are going to playthese songs hundreds and thousands of ti-mes.”

The album was recorded by HeritageSound’s Brendyn “Rusti” Rossouw who gui-tarist, Alex McFarlane, dubs “already a li-ving legend in the industry”.

After working with Reburn on “No OtherPlace” and “Won’t Let Go”, their most suc-cessful single to date, Brendyn approached

them after a show and convinced the bandthe time was right to record a full album.

“He was actually the driving force behindthis album,” Scottie says. The band spent amonth in studio as opposed to the few shorthours previously, and Scottie says it was anice experience to be able to take their time.

Although the album’s name fits perfectlywith the image of a derelict aeroplane on thecover, the design was somewhat of a flukeor “divine intervention” as Alex calls it.

Touring“We kind of just threw a whole bunch of

words together and we just picked from the-re,” explains guitarist, Craig Hermanus.

Alex says Reburn are busy finalising thedetails for a new music video, but there arealso twoother videoprojects includingdocu-mentary and outdoor performance footage“in the wings”.

Theyhavebeen confirmed to playRockingthe Daises in September and are planning atour around the festival before heading offon a coastal tour in November.

The plan is to take the album to as manyand venues as possible, no matter how bigor small. “We just want to get in people’sfaces,” Scottie says.

The City of Cape Town’s social develop-ment and early childhood developmentdirectorate urges community organisati-ons working with vulnerable groups toapply for rates rebates as soon as possi-ble.

Shelters working with homeless peopleand homes catering for the health of phys-ically or mentally challenged individualsand vulnerable groups need to registerwith the city’s Homeless Agency Commit-tee to apply for rebates related to rates,solid waste, water and sanitation, and se-wage by 31 August.

In the past financial year, the city hasheld a number of information sessions toensure that interested organisations areinformed of this opportunity as well asthe relevant documentation needed andthe process to be followed to qualify forrelief for the 2014/2015 financial year.

“We’ve discovered in the past that so-me organisations are unaware of the poli-cy, while others have failed to qualify forrelief merely because they did not havethe necessary documentation, or wereunsure of how to fill in the forms,” said

the city’s mayco member for social deve-lopment and early childhood develop-ment, Suzette Little.

“So, last year we started the informati-on sessions to assist organisations whodo sterling work in our communities butwho often struggle to cover costs such asmunicipal bills because of funding con-straints. In this way, the city and NGOscan work together to make progress pos-sible.”

de Lange after he beat Gordon Roodman atEFC Africa 32 two weeks ago.Shaun, aptly named “The Kid” at the age

of 21, is showing a lot ofmaturity in thehexa-gon and is currently unbeaten after threeprofessional fights in the welterweight divi-sion.Some EFC critics reckon this is one of the

best fights they have ever seen.“I feel honoured that people think that.

Myself and Gordon fought hard that night,it was a bloody mess. We stood and tradedstrikes all fight. Gordon, likeme is awarriorand I respect the hard work he puts in.

Great team“My coaches Dean Johnson and Earl Ab-

rahams are great, always pushing me andkeeping me focused. To be a top fighter youneed a great coaching teamand that is exact-ly what I have,” said a satisfied Shaun.

Shaun learned the art of fighting underthe guidance of GrahamTurner. But, for thelast year Shaun decided to join Lethal EdgeMMA and Fitness Centre managed and

coached by Dean Johnson.“Shaun is really growing in leaps and

bounds, he is much more refined and youcan’t help feel excited for what the future

holds for him,” says Dean.“I see him as an accomplished fighter at

21, there aren’tmany that youngwith his ex-perience.”For now, it’s back in the gym training

hard.

In his own backyardShaun trains five days a week for about

four hours a day. Covering all the basics,with no two sessions are the same.“I will love to fight in my own back yard

at GrandWest on 6 November when it’s EFCAfrica 35. I don’t have any specific fighterin mind, that is up to the EFC, so I will waitand see what they offer. My target now is tojust keep fighting in the organisation,” saidShaun.According to Dean, they would love to

have one or twomore fights before consider-ing a title bout.“I think it will be wise to give Shaun one

of two more fights before we start focusingon a potential title fight. Seeing that he onlyhas three professional fights, it only makessense to give him one or two more fights.”Shaun beat Booto Guylain and Saxon De-

lafield in his previous outings.

condition, but it is incredibly tough. It wasplaying pretty slow and it has a lot of out ofbounds areas.“If you are not accurate, it costs you big
