The Crime Prevention Unit of the Parow po-

lice responded to an armed robbery in

    progress in 4thAvenue and ayoungmanwas

    arrested.

Apparently the owner went to his front

door to lock it on Friday and was confronted

by a man wearing a grey hooded top.

The suspect entered the business with a

    firearm inhishandand instructed the owner

and a staff member to go into the premises,

    saysLieutenantKevinLWilliams,Parowpo-

    lice spokesperson.

One of the victims attacked the robber

and a shot went off but no one was injured

and the suspect fled the scene with a coin to

    the value of R1 500.

Constable Ricardo van Schalkwyk and the

CPU team received a clear description of the

suspect from the victim and went in search

    of him.

The victim knew a friend of the suspect

and gave details. The CPU team searched for

the friend of the suspect until they found

him. They followed the lead and arrested the

suspect at his address in Arena Hof in Ryan

Street. The suspect was taken into custody

and charged with armed robbery and at-

    tempted murder.

Trying tomake a difference in their com-

munities that is the aim of two Parow

    studentswhohave been selected as final-

ists in a competition for their creativity.

    The twosome; Nadia

    Smith (28) and Johan van

den Heever (26) let their cre-

    ative juices flow and are

now two of 16 finalists who

were selected out of 200 in

    the Shift Fresh Talent Sus-

    tainable Design Competi-

    tion.

    The NPO, Shift, aims to

    raise awareness among

    young South Africans about

the role that design can play

    in developing practical and

    sustainable solutions to eve-

    ryday challenges.

Now in its third year, the

    competition kicked off in

    September with a call to

    young creatives to submit

    proposals and designs that

    addressed the issues of sus-

    tainability under the brief

    Small Change, A World of

    Difference.

    Nadia, a graphic design

    student at CPUT, came up

    with a design Femaway.

Her design is one that will

attend to the needs of wom-

    en.

    After my research it was

    discovered thatwomenusea

    whole toilet roll when they

    dispose of their sanitary

    towels and tampons when

they have their period. I de-

    signed a ziplock double lay-

er bag, which keeps germs out. Women will

be able to save money with the bag.

She says it would be great if it is sold at

a low cost price with tampons or sanitary

towels when women buy them at stores.

She says the name of the design is Fema-

wayrefers to the it beinga feminineproduct.

The away part is because its problems

    away.

I was so shocked when I

heard I was a finalist, but it

means a lot tome. I hope that

I can make a difference with

    this design.

    Johan, amultidisciplinary

    drawing office student at

    Academy IDT, came up with

    the design A house.

    My design is pretty

    straight forward. It will

    hopefully alleviate the hous-

    ing problem that South Afri-

ca is facing. Structurally it is

strong, my main focus is the

    effectiveness. I hope that this

    can help with governments

    process in that regard.

    His design ismadeup of re-

    cyclable materials.

    People can use whatever

    they want for their house,

    such as plastic, wood which

    is cheaper to replace. The

panels of the home can also

be removed to suit the own-

    ers needs.

He says he was also taken

aback when he heard that he

    was a finalist.

    It was unexpected but I

    am happy.

    For now Nadia and Johan

    will wait until they compete

as one of 16 finalists inFebru-

    ary 2013where threewinners

    will be chosen and awarded

    cash prizes. There will also

    be a knowledge exchange

trip to Sweden to learnmore about the Scan-

dinavian ways of sustainable living and de-

    sign.

    Bright designs for

    sustainability

    Nadia Smith designed Fema

    way for the competition.

    Johan van der Heevers de

    sign was entitled A House.

The Parow police launched their fes-

    tive season roadblock at Riebeeck

    Street, Beaconvale on Friday.

More than 35 police officers were de-

ployed from the Parow police station

and five traffic officials from the Good-

    wood traffic department.

The purpose of the roadblock was to

    promote the Parow police operational

    readiness for the forthcoming festive

season and the search and seizure of

firearms and drugs to create a safe and

    secure environment in this time.

    No arrests or confiscations took

place but the operation was successful

    in activating the following:

    . 49 vehicles were searched.

    . 79 people were searched.

    . 405 crime prevention pamphlets

    were distributed.

    . 60 vehicles were tested.

    . Two cellphones were tested.

    . R2 200 traffic violation fines were

    issued.

The Parow police will intensify po-

lice visibility and have regular road-

    blocks during the festive season.

    Cops hold roadblock

Two men were nabbed on Friday when they

were stopped and searched after they broke

    into a Parow Valley home.

Warrant Officer Danie du Plessis, the Sec-

tor 4manager and Student Constable Nomax-

abiso Mtshelu were doing crime prevention

patrols in Sarel Cilliers Street when they re-

ceived the complaint of a housebreaking in

    progress.

They responded to the call and saw two

men running out in the street, says Kevin

    L Williams, Parow police spokesperson.

The officers followed the suspects. When

they saw the police vehicle they slowed down

and started to walk. W/O Du Plessis stopped

them and started to search the suspects. He

ask for a description of the men who broke

into the house at Sarel Cilliers street.

Williams says based on the clear descrip-

tion received both men were arrested for

housebreaking. The suspects are from New

    Crossroads in Khayelitsha.

In last weeks TygerBurger (Attacked in

club, 7 Nov) it stated that a man was attacked

in a well established Panorama restaurant, it

was in fact a Welgelegen restaurant. The paper

received the previous detail from the manager.

    REYANA STEYN

    Parowbusiness owners and residents are

outraged at an open field which has be-

come problematic and are calling for ur-

    gent action to take place.

The residents are furious that the field

along Giel Basson Drive and NathanMalach

Street is unkempt, with huge bushes and

    evenhomeless peoplewhohavemoved to the

field which they feel is a health and safety

    hazard.

    GerriePienaar,whoownsabusiness oppo-

site the field, is concerned as his property

    was almost broken into.

    Hehas contacted theCity ofCapeTownnu-

merous times, where he discovered that the

    land is privately owned.

He has also tried to make contact with the

owner who resides in Johannesburg, but on-

ly got to speak to his Cape Town partner who

said that he will pass the message on.

    Richard Bosman, executive director: Safe-

ty and Security, says the citys Displaced

Peoples Unit is aware of the situation, but

is unable to take action on privately-owned

    land.

It is the responsibility of the landowner

to keep their land clean and cared for. If it

is invaded by squatters, it is the landowners

responsibility to seek an eviction order. The

city can assist with a social intervention

    whereby its SocialDevelopmentDepartment

will assistwith relocation to assessment cen-

tres or reunification with their families.

This is done on a voluntary basis.

Pienaar says: This is a huge problem for

us. More and more people are living on the

field now. We have contacted law enforce-

ment who have come and removed them, but

in a couple of days they are back again. The

bushes are a huge danger as many people al-

    so walk over the field.

He says people also come to work at differ-

ent hours of the morning and it could be a

    danger to them too.

We were shocked when we came to work

and discovered that the door of our offices

were almost broken into. The door was com-

pletely jammed and it was a scary thought

as someone could have been inside the

    premises.

We pay rates and people report the situa-

tion but no one is listening. All we want is

    the problem sorted, he added.

    Councillor Lungiswa James, mayoral

committee member: Health says, the citys

    environmental health section conducted an

    inspection into the privately-owned vacant

land and found the properties to be over-

grown with weeds, grass and trees.

A notice will therefore be served on the

owners of the vacant site to remove the vege-

tation, in terms of the Environmental Health

    Bylaw.

    STADSBESTUURDER

    189/2012

Miskien het jy nog nooit van hier-

die siekte gehoor nie. Maar in die

    beskrywing van hierdie siekte sal

jy sien dis n erge siekte. Dalk sal

    ernstige gevolgevir jouself enalmal

rondom jou.Die simptome is n erge

    gevoel vanmin energie enbaie frus-

    trasie, min verdraagsaamheid en

    ho potensiaal vir konflik, saam

met ho vlakke van ongeduld n ag-

    gressiwiteit.

moet doen. Die siekte gaan ook ge-

    paard met n kenmerkende syferag-

    tige uitslag veral n begrotings,

moet noukom, of... As dit so is, kan

jy maar weet die diagnose is No-

vemberitis! Ek is nie seker of No-

vemberitis in die tyd van Ou Testa-

    ment bestaan het nie,

    maar dit kan wees dat

    die simptome daar-

    van beskryf word in

    Psalm 143 (Die Bood-

    skap): 3: My lewe het

    vir my alle betekenis

    verloor. 4: Ek het be-

    gin moed verloor. Ek

    was baie bang en be-

    noud.

    U. Soos n dor stuk land niks is son-

    Help my asseblief tog

    gou, Here. Ek is besig

    omdood te gaan.Moet

    my nie ignoreer nie,

    anders gaan ek nog

    gouer dood.

    Gelukkig gee die

    Psalmdigter ook so n

    bietjie medisyne wat

    ons dalk kan gebruik:

    Onthou maar Wie is

daar van die begin af. Dink bietjie

weer oor Sy krag. Sonder Hom kan

ons ook nie regkom en klaarkom

nie! Sonder di Here se hulp sal jy

    ook nie Novemberitis oorleef nie!

Die beste medisyne vir die siekte

is n vakansie of wegbreek sodat

jy net kanwegkom van dit en diege-

ne wat jou simptome vererger en

weer van vooraf kan begin in die

    nuwe jaar. Die syferagtige uitslag

wat jou nou n mislukking laat voel

    behoort ook genees te word.

Mag jy dus genoeg water van ge-

nade kry om die laaste stuk van

    2012 en Novemberitis te oorleef.

Raak nou rustig, haal diep asem,

    Parowpolice arrested a 29-year-oldmanwho

robbed a woman in broad daylight on Tues-

ground and stole her Blackberry cellphone.

The victim screamed and people came to

help her. The suspect then fled the scene

with the cellphone, says Lieutenant Kevin

    J. Williams, Parow police spokesperson.

The victim gave a careful description to

the Parow patrol vehicle upon arrival. The

officers searched for the suspect and he was

    later arrested, Williams said.

n Weduwee wat haar man vier

    maande gelede verloor het, n

    vrou wat uit desperaatheid haar

    familie en vriende se wasgoed

was om die pot aan die kook te

    hounhaarmansywerkverloor

het, en n enkelma met drie kin-

ders, wat daarvan droom om vir

die eerste keer n eie Kersete te

    geniet.

Dt was die drie gesinne wat in

    Oggendrooi se onlangse projek Oa-

se op Radio Tygerberg 104FM elk n

    trollie vol kruideniersware ter

waarde van R2 000 van Pick n Pay

    ontvang het.

    Ons doen hierdie projek elke

    paar maande, aangesien ons SMS-

lyn in die ateljee aandui daar is n

groot nood in die Kaapse Skierei-

    land, vertel Benescke Janse van

    Rensburg, een van die omroepers

    van Oggendrooi.

Met die projek Oase kry luiste-

raars die geleentheid om iemand te

    nomineer, wat deur n woestyntyd

gaan.

lope projek by Koba Paxton in Pro-

teavallei opgedaag op die dag wat

    haarman presies vier maande gele-

    gaan,maarmet diewete datGodnie

    houthokkie agter n woonhuis bly,

was daar trane in haar o toe sy ver-

tel dat dit die eerste Kersfees sal

wees n haar egskeiding, dat sy nie

nodig het om die kinders te stuur

om by iemand anders te gaan eet

    nie.

    REYANA STEYN

An array of colourful flowers splashed

everywhere is what one see when you

    step into Marina Wijners

    garden.

    The 66-year-old Avondale

resident is on a mission to em-

    brace spring with her flowers,

but besides this, she is also try-

ing to add some cheer to the

lives of others by picking her

    flowers when they are ready

and handing them over to hos-

    pitals.

    I started growing the Iris

    flowers about six years ago,

    she says.

    They are beautiful and

    come in different colours. This

year I decided to take the flow-

    ers to the Parow Mediclinic,

just to brighten up the day of

    the doctors and patients.

    She says the Iris flowers

    drew her attention after she

    visited a nursery.

I saw them and was taken

by them. I then did some re-

search and found that they are

    easy to care for.

    She says planting these flow-

    ers givesher great satisfaction.

    Every morning I wake up

and the first thing I do is to see

    how the flowers have grown

and if there are new ones.

Its such a greatway to start

off my day and I hope by doing

this that it will help others

    too.

    She has also recently started

selling them to people, so that

they too can enjoy the Iris flow-

    ers.

If you are interested in getting yourself

some Iris flowers then sendan email toMari-

    na on [email protected].

can see whats wrong, but can you see

    whats right?

Eerstens was hierdie kinders se bedoe-

lings suiwer, tweedens hul werk edel.

    Daagliks kry TygerBurger klagtes van

lesers oor swak diens, die vrot polisie, die

    oneffektiewe Stad, bergies hier, bedelaars

    daar, misdaad wat toeneem.

Daar is baie dingewat verkeerd is,maar

was alles al ooit reg? Dis eenvoudig n feit

Sien raak hoe men-

semet baiemin tot hul beskikking n groot

verskil in ander se lewe en omstandighede

maak.

Alien Invasion? Weather conditions in the Cape recently gave us some spectacular views in the sky of these Lenticular clouds

(Altocumulus lenticularis). They are stationary lensshaped clouds that form at high altitudes, normally in perpendicular alignment

to thewind direction. Due to their shape, they have been offered as an explanation for someUnidentified Flying Object (UFO) sightings.

    SLICE OF LIFE

    SLICE OF LIFE

    Posbusdief slaan twee keer toe

My posbus is al twee keer binne een maand

    gesteel.

duur en toe weer n posbus gaan koop by

    Builders Warehouse.

Ek gaan nie weer n posbus aanskaf nie.

Dis geldelik vir my n groot slag.

Die mense oorkant my huis het dieselfde

    posbusse, so ek kannie verstaanwaaromnet

meer oplettendwees, veral as hul honde blaf.

    Grass issue out of control

I am glad that finally some attention has

been given to the poor state of our parks.

I have been living in Stellenberg for over

30 years and the neighbourhood has never

    been as neglected as lately.

The grass issue is out of control.

The neglect of the parks, canals and corri-

dors has been going on for many years, ever

since the Cape Town Government out-

    sourced these maintenance services.

It would appear that the procurement of

these services is done by a team of unprofes-

    sional employeeswithin theCapeTownGov-

    ernment.

In all probability the citys park adminis-

trators have no real power to do anything

and must deal with what has been dished

    out to them.

The budget allowed for the parks mainte-

nance seems very healthy but how efficient-

ly it is being administrated is anothermatter

entirely. Outsourcing is the name of game in

these days, but it also opensmanyopportuni-

    ties for corruption.

Inmy experience I find thatMr Afrika has

always been very helpful and passionate

about his work, as well as the previous Man-

ager Mr Johan de Villiers, now retired.

Three weeks ago my son and I parked out-

side the liquid gas outlet inWellingtonRoad

and walked across the road to the Absa

    ATM.

A traffic officer on a motorbike parked

on the corner on the yellow line, also going

    to the ATM.

On my way back, I jokingly said u is on-

    moet skryf.

He looked up from his cellular phone and

replied, Mevrou, jy kan dit maar probeer,

    and smirked.

The point I am making is that we all try

and lead by example. What he did as an offi-

cer of the law was once again to send out

the message that wearing a uniform makes

    you untouchable!

    ANTHEA

    Durbanville

Arrogant traffic cop must give himself a fine

Verlede naweek braai ek en n hele klomp

    mense by vriende in Brackenfell.

    Diemiddag reedsbesef diehuiseienaars

    huis vol mense.

Hulle bel die Stad Kaapstad se na-ure-

nommer en die persoon belowe hulle

    stuur iemand.

Centre will be doing their annual Wish

Tree project from Friday (10 November)

until 25 November and everyone can be

part of making special childrens wishes

    come true.

This year sees the fifth Wish Tree initia-

tive and the centre, in conjunction with Ty-

gerBurger, have selected the Muscular Dys-

trophy Foundation of South Africa for chil-

dren with muscular dystrophy, as the

    benefiting charity this year.

To participate in this worthy project, just

choose a tag from the Wish Tree, situated in

the Woolworths Court, Upper Level. Every

tag reveals what a specific child wishes to

    receive for Christmas.

Purchase the wish on the tag at any

store and place the gift under theWish Tree.

Elves will later even wrap the gifts free of

charge. They will also deliver all the chil-

drens gifts at the Wish Tree Christmas Par-

ty on 30November held at theMuscular Dys-

    trophy Foundation of South Africa.

    Early Childhood Development

    Centres (ECDs) are getting a

    boost for future learning.

    During this November Absa will

be announcing the winners for this

years ECDAwards which is part of

their initiative to provide an entre-

    preneurial motivation for these

    centres by supporting practitioners

with skills to run sustainable ECD

    centres as businesses.

The awards programme is the on-

ly award of its kind in southern Af-

    rica which recognises best practice

    through a provincial and national

    competition.

This years awards will be rolled

out in the provinces and culminate

in the national awards during this

    month.

    Practitioners in ECD are invited

    to participate in the programme,

    which includes capacity building to

    help practitioners improve their

    service offering and value proposi-

    tion.

    Sisa Ntshona, head of Enterprise

    Development, pointed out that with

    the high levels of unemployment

and poverty, the bank wanted to be

    facilitators of job creation.

That is why the role of entrepre-

    neurs can never be underestimated

    because they essentially drive the

    economy and ultimately create jobs

    for themselves and others.

    Through Absa Enterprise Deve-

    lopment Centres located nationwi-

    de, ECD practitioners can access

    business support and receive opera-

    tional and infrastructural guidan-

    ce.

    Our Enterprise Development

    Centres provide access to equip-

ment and computers, as well as

knowledgeable staff to assist the en-

    trepreneur where necessary, ad-

    ded Ntshona.

    ECD involves nurturing phys-

    ical, cognitive, emotional and spiri-

    tual development in children. This

is part of the national priority to re-

duce child poverty so that children

are provided with the correct sti-

mulation to grow into healthy, ba-

    lanced adults.

    These practitioners play a vital

role through their work with child-

ren, laying the foundation for basic

    learning and life skills.

To this end, the awards program-

me aims to promote and recognise

    their excellence, hardwork, dedica-

tion and investment in the future of

    South Africa.

    The Department of Social Deve-

lopment has been a partner with

Absa in the awarding and announ-

    cement of national winners.

    CarikeKeuzenkamp vier vanjaar 45 jaar

    volgende liedjie. n Soort verbindingsteks.

gekom. So is Ghoempie gebore en ons het

nooit gedink dat hy so gewild gaanwees nie!

Die reeks het aanvanklik begin as

DVDs.

    Is jou kleinkinders Ghoempie-aanhan-

gers? Weet hulle jy is Ghoempie en

    Ghoeghoe se skepper?

My kleinseuns is deeglik daarvan bewus

    Ontvang jy baie positiewe terugvoer

    nie.

    drie geskenkpakke, besoek www.tygerbur-
