sterk rivierstroom oor die sportveld ge-stroom het, en selfs ’n deel van die Cahill-huis se oprit bynaheeltemalweggespoel het.“Ons oprit is besig om inmekaar te tuimel,

Watch out for a sisterhood that wants tochange the world for disadvantaged youth.

Society Sistas, headed by Chevon Samu-els and Paula Faria, is an organisation ofyoung people getting together tomake ama-jor difference in the lives of young peopleat risk.

Samuels explained that a chance meetingof the two of them as adultsmade them real-ise that although, as children, they grew upin different “societies” they shared a pas-sion to help those less fortunate.

“We realised that there were so manyyoung people out there, from different com-munities, who have dreams that could bedestroyed by circumstance,” she said.

“We know there are many like us hopingandpraying for a chance tomake someone’slife much brighter and happier by havinga profound impact on them to make somesort of change in those that are less fortu-nate. That is why we started working to-gether to make that change happen.”

When these two friends identified theirpassion for reaching out they put that pas-sion into action by forming the group to

make that difference for those at risk in pov-erty, abuse and hunger.

For some time now they both accom-plished extensive work in different commu-nities with the help of friends who sharetheir passion in those communities.

Their current projects consist of commu-nity outreach in Mfuleni, Atlantis, Philippifarm households, Eureka Estate, localchurches, creches and senior citizen

projects.“While many of our project involve long-

Lollos leer jonges oor hul lyfies

“May the tales of history resound with eve-ry shot fired by this cannon and remind usof a rich history that needs to be told to gen-erations to come.”

These were the words of Clive Justus,Subcouncil chairperson, who gave a key-note speech at the firing of the newly re-stored cannon on Tygerberg Hill on Satur-day.

The historical event was held to com-memorate the return of the cannon to itsoriginal site on top of the hill.

The original 12-pound cannon,whichwasrestored and returned, was fired again forthe first time since the 1800s. Themore than300-year-old cannon stood outside theParow municipal offices for years.

Bill Wilson, Chairman of the Friends ofTygerberg Hills, says they managed to re-turn the cannon to its original site with thehelp of amongst others the CannonAssocia-tion of South Africa.

“It was a verymomentous occasion for usall, bringingback the cannon, history.Aftermany years of red tape we have managedto get back Cape history, which gave us allgreat pleasure to be a part of the return andwitness the firing of the cannon,” says Wil-son.

The Friends of Tygerberg Hills had thecannon restored so that it can be fired againfrom the Tygerberg Hill on special occa-sions. According to Wilson, the muzzle-loading gun was fired officially for the firsttime since 1806.

“Itwas the biggest cannonof a calling sys-tem of about 54 cannons, which were usedto call Burghers to arms for the Battle ofBlaauwberg,” says Wilson.

TheTygerberg signal cannon formedpartof a signal chain in the 1800s that stretchedfrom Salt River to Citrusdal (north) andSwellendam (south).

At the event Justus expressed his sinceregratitude to the Friends of the TygerbergHills and all those involved.

“History is no predictor of the future, butthe present and the future canbe influencedby historical experiences,” says Justus.

He came, he soared, he tinkered.The ever optimistic Matt Silver-Vallance

attempted the ludicrous stunt to drift calm-ly from Robben Island westward to thecoast while being attached to 160 helium-filled balloons on Saturday.He drifted, but not particularly calmly.Matt’s pellet gunwasn’t powerful enough

to pop the balloons in order to descend...Thankfully Bob Dylan was right when hesang: “The answer, my friend, is blowingin the wind”.This answer was to manually drag the

balloons closer towards him while air-borne so that he could pierce themby usinga makeshift long handled knife.If not for this,Mattmight still be drifting,

probably somewhere above the IndianOcean.The flight, which has been planned for

nigh on four years, was organised to raiseR10 million towards the building of theNel-son Mandela Children’s Hospital in Gau-teng.There was no fixed date for the stunt, but

last week Thursday the team got the go-ahead for the Saturday when it was fore-casted that a gentle wind would blow in anorth-easterly direction and that itwouldn’t rain.That morning the wind blew in a south-

easterly direction and the mist and rain al-most spoiled the party. The weathermanwas nowhere to be seen.In a perfect world Matt was supposed to

land just beyond the breakers at Eden ontheBay, but the cantankerouswind insteadcarried him to Sunset Beach – more thanan hour after he lifted off from Robben Is-land at 11:45.The social network, Twitter, was both a

blessing and a curse for those who had ac-cess to it.Some 20minutes before he touched down

itwas tweeted thatMatt is heading towardsSunset Beach. An army of journalists andphotographers raced to their vehicles andwere stuck in traffic until the tweet camethrough thatMatt has landed andwill headtowards Eden on the Bay with the boatcrew.This newswas greeted with several exas-

perating u-turns on Marine Drive.At long-last Matt arrived at Eden on the

Bay on a rubber motorboat.Fervent journalists – armed with camer-

as, notebooks and voice recorders – flockedaround the visibly drained “Balloonman”.Matt confirmed at that moment that he

will not be answering any questions beforethe debriefing in half-an-hour...The tease!TygerBurger’s pre-flight interview with

him, which was printed in last week’s Ta-ble View and Milnerton editions, statedthat he would be using the “best bb gun inthe world” to shoot the balloons when heneeded to descend.Patience was never my forté, so I jumped

the gun, introduced myself and asked Matthow the best bb gun in the world worked.He put his arm around my shoulder and

said: “Dude! It didn’t! That bb gun was sto-len from me on Friday night!”Suffice to say he didn’t want to elaborate.It was later revealed that at his highest

point during the flight, Matt soared 1 000metres above sea level, before landing 300metres offshore from Sunset Beach,Mouille Point.Says Matt: “After lift-off, I soon realised

that this was not a scene out of a movie –this was serious.”With the “Balloon Run” completed, the

Anunsuspecting resident of Parowwas re-cently defrauded out of almostR3 000whenshe tried to withdrawmoney from an FNBATM at the Caltex garage in VoortrekkerRoad. This is the second time in sevenyears that she has lost money due to ATMfraud.According to Rosalind Sawka (57) she

went to withdrawmoney from the particu-lar ATM, which she thought would bequicker than going to the local supermar-ket on a Saturday morning.“I usually go to Shoprite, but sometimes

it can be really busy and full. I sometimesgo to the garage, but I always ask the cash-ier for help,” she says.Sawka says there was a guy in front of

her busy at the ATM when she got there.“After he was done, I stepped closer and

inserted my bank card into the slot. Thenext thing it asked me for my pin and my

cellphone number, which I found ratherstrange, but I entered both numbers,” saysSawka.It was then she realised that the man

whowasusing theATMearlier,was stand-ing next to her and was almost forcinglytelling her to enter her details that the ma-chine was requesting.She reluctantly did, called the cashier

and then she cancelled the transaction.She says her daughter accompanied her,

butwas not feeling too good at the time andstood some distance away from her moth-er.Next an ATM bank slip came out stating

she had entered the wrong pin, but thenshe received an SMS stating the moneywas withdrawn at Nedbank.“You just don’t think it will ever happen

to you.“I am a Christian, and my pastor said I

should claim the money back seven-fold.But even if I don’t get the money back, I

would just like towarn others about the re-ality of ATM card cloning,” says Sawka.“Rather use the counters in the banks, be-ware of ATMs, aswell as extremely helpfulbystanders,” she says.Lt KevinWilliams, Parow police spokes-

person, confirmed that Sawka opened acase of fraud at the Parow police station,and said the case is being investigated.According to Williams the way the

fraudsters operate is that theymost proba-bly place a card reader over the ATM key-pad.“All the information is then stored on

the fraudster’s device unknown and una-ware to the ATM user. When you cancelthe transaction your personal info hasbeen stored on the frauding device. Thesuspect can later use your info and fraudu-lentlyuseyour information todrawmoneyfrom your account. Those in question canalso clone your card, because they haveyour pin and now even your cell number.”

The City of Cape Town is all systemsgo to fight the proposed N1-N2 Wine-lands Toll Highway project.

If it gets the go-ahead this project is like-ly to leave everyone living along, or usingthe N1 out of pocket.It last week filed an urgent application

for an interdict,which will be heard in theWestern Cape High Court on 16 May.This interdict if granted will provide the

City with an order to prevent Sanral fromtaking any steps towards implementationof the project, pending the review applica-tion by the same court.This review application was brought by

the City on 28 March last year, to seek re-view of the decisions taken by the environ-mental and transport ministers to grantauthorisation for the project; and Sanralwho declared the highways as a toll road.

ApplicationAccording to Brett Herron, Mayoral

Committee member for Road and Trans-port, the City has been unable to bring theexchange of pleadings in the above reviewapplication to a close because Sanral hasrefused to provide them with a completerecord of documents relevant to the tollroad project. This includes how much theproject will cost and what toll fees are like-ly to be levied.“Asa consequence, theCityalsobrought

an application to compel Sanral to disclosethese documents.”This application was instituted against

Sanral on 1 March this year and will, bydirection of the acting judge president andat the request of the City’s legal team, beheard at the same time as the city’s urgentinterdict application on 16 May.

Groundless“Sanral’s notice to the city that it intends

to implement the toll road project was re-ceived on 6 March – a few days after thecity instituted the High Court applicationto compel it to provide those documentsthat are absent from the record and whichSanral has refused to provide,” says Coun-cillor Herron.According to him, Sanral gave as the rea-

sons for the sudden need to implement thetoll road project, the need to upgrade andmaintain the road and to address safetyconcerns.“Through our own investigation, those

purported reasons have proven to begroundless and exaggerated,” he says.“We believe that the true reason for ter-

minating the undertaking is to manufac-ture a situation whereby the time the re-view application is heard the court will bepresented with a fait accompli, as was thecase in Gauteng,” says Herron who be-lieves that the City’s application to compelthe disclosure of the missing documentstriggered Sanral’s notice of implementa-tion.“Despite Sanral’s claims that it iswilling

to engage with the city, the facts speak forthemselves. Sanral is a public agencycharged with managing and maintainingSouth Africa’s national road network.“It is ourview that Sanral’s refusal to ful-

ly disclose all the relevant information ontheWinelands Toll Road project to the cityand to the residents of Cape Town, placesit in breach of its constitutional duty of ac-countability, responsiveness, openness,transparency and co-operative govern-ance.”

Not legitimateHerron says, Sanral has no legitimate

reason for withholding any informationrelating to its decision to toll portions ofthe N1 and N2 or what the impact will befor the people of our city and our country.Reacting to this application Sanral stat-

ed that there is no basis for the city to inter-dict them but should it go ahead, they willoppose the interdict and seek a punitivecosts order against the City.

A group of international students recentlybrought great joy to the children at the Ty-gerberg Children’s Hospital by visiting andmaking them balloon figures of dogs, lady-birds and aliens.The visit was initiated by Archbishop

Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who is the patronof Tygerberg Children’s Hospital in Parow.The students, who have been travelling

on the “Semester at Sea” cruiseship that re-cently docked in Cape Town, all visited thehospital.The ship has been travelling the world

with 600 students on board.International studies student Maddie

Hodges, said they had heard about the goodwork the hospital is doing from Tutu, whohas been guest lecturing on the ship.She said Tutu had stressed the impor-

tance of being open to others and also saidyoung people had the power to generatechange.

American student Jessica Kagan, whohas been teaching her fellow students onthe ship about the art of balloon twisting,said they wanted to do something thatwould bring some happiness to others.“This is beautiful. I’m very happy that

they came to see us,” said nine-year-oldLynette Mdoda, while holding a balloon la-dybird.Mdodahas been in the infectious diseases

ward for three weeks.Her grandmother, Lynette, said the visit

was a welcome break from routine.The hospital, which works closely with

Stellenbosch University, treats 16 000 chil-dren every year, and raises much-neededfunds for equipment and facilities throughthe Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust.The student ship will spend a week in

Cape Town before heading off to Ghana andMorocco and finally ending their four-month voyage in Spain.

Mark Labrum’s letter “Makingus into a Godless society”(TygerBurger, 3 April) refers.It would be difficult to justify

the death sentence for all rapevia the Old Testament, whichdescribes a patriarchal societythat practiced polygamy andslavery, and a virgin who wasraped had to marry her rapist(Deuteronomy 22:28). MrLabrum seems to blame“liberal academics” for rape,crime and godlessness, as ifFreud, Marx or Darwin madethe world meaningless and canbe taught without historicalcontext and critique.It is uncertain what religious

instruction Mr Labrum wouldlike to see imposed on univer-sities. Perhaps that faithhealing should be taught inmedical faculties? The verypoint of having universities asinstitutions of critical thoughtand research would thenbecome unnecessary. The“research” on Ted Bundy andhis claims to be influenced bypornography and detectivemagazines is apparently basedon statements made the daybefore his execution to DrJames Dobson, founder of theevangelical Family ResearchCouncil; a longtime anti-por-nography advocate.Without solid causal evi-

dence that the Sexpo actuallyleads to rape, one could saythat it was in bad taste.However, interfering in adulttaste is a slippery slopetowards banning all kinds offree expression, includingChristian material that can bedeemed as sexist, homophobic,Islamophobic, etc.There is an entrenched

problem of aggressive mascu-linity in our society ...Violenceand rape against women is amain concern, but men arealso at risk of violent assaultsby other men, as has recentlybeen by recent attacks reportedin the media. Were the culprits“godless”?

Simplistic viewof our society

As an anti-death penaltyactivist all my life, MarkLabrum’s letter (Making usinto Godless society, Tyger-Burger, 3 April) jerked me intoaction.The only one worthy to be

followed is Christ Jesus whotaught us that Moses said aneye for an eye and a tooth fora tooth, but I tell you that youmust love even your enemy.The death penalty will not

change anything, in fact it willonly make matters worse.We had the death penalty in

our country before. But it waseventually used to convict evenpolitical people...When we say this is a

Christian country, becausemore than 70 % of its citizensare Christians, then surelythey should also take theblame for most of our crime.There is not a single country

in the world where the deathpenalty is in operation thatcan call itself free and demo-cratic. The death penalty canonly succeed where there isfear, hatred and unforgiveness,things that Christ warns us aredeadly sins.Anyone that supports the

death penalty, is a potentialmurderer themselves.

New alcohol bylaw enforcedWith the City of Cape Town’s Liquor Tra-ding Days and Hours bylaw having come in-to effect this month, the city’s Liquor Enfor-cement Unit conducted focused operationslast Wednesday night.Theunit inspected 67 off-consumptionpre-

mises in Goodwood, Parow, Bellville, Dur-banville, Kuils River andBrackenfell. Of thepremises inspected, 63were found to be com-pliant with the bylaw.Four written warning notices were issued

to establishments fornot complyingwith thetrading hours stipulated, as per their locati-on category.Through operations like this, the city

seeks to educate liquor licenceholders aboutthe stipulations of the bylaw to ensure thatthey operate legally.There is a focus on issuing warnings and

fines before taking more drastic action, sothat establishments are given an opportuni-ty to rectify any faults. The Liquor Enforce-ment Unit will continue to conduct inspecti-ons and create awareness around the bylawin residential and business areas across Ca-pe Town.

Days and Hours Bylaw came into effect on1 April. Anyone trading in liquor must the-refore abide by the new trading hours from1 April, regardless of their type of licence.This comes after extensive communicati-

on and engagement with a whole range ofstakeholders about how best to oversee thehourswithinwhich liquormaybe sold in thecity.“The bylaw has sought to consider the

needs of all stakeholders in the city and tostrike a balance between the social effects ofalcohol abuse, potential disruption (especi-ally in residential areas), and the reasonablesale of alcohol for the hospitality sector,”said Garreth Bloor, Mayoral Committee

member for Economic, Environmental andSpatial Planning.As part of the city’s commitment to sup-

porting the entertainment and hospitalitysector,which is an important economicmul-tiplier in the city, the city has created a spe-cial exemption for licensed premises whichcurrently sell liquor for consumption on si-te.The default trading hours for the sale of

liquor on licensed premises in the bylaw is02:00, but premises can apply for an extensi-on until 04:00.This exemption only applies to licensed

premises in areas that are zoned for busi-ness or industrial use.

This exemptionwas specifically created toensure that traders who operate in promi-nent entertainment districts that are correc-tly zoned are not limited to the default tra-ding hours.Requirements outlined in the bylaw:V The implementation of revised trading

hours for the sale of liquor for consumptionon licensed premises (such as restaurants,bars and clubs).

When I readabout this super-easydressingmade with equal quantities of soft brownsugar, soy sauce and sunflower oil, I hadto make it immediately. The moment I tas-ted it, I was hooked. If you needmore dres-sing, just make it!To make dressing, mix sugar, soy sauce

and oil together. Stir well. No problem ifthe sugar does not dissolve – it will dissol-ve once in the salad. Set aside.Combine the rest of the ingredients (use

your hands). Pour over the dressing. Toss.Leave for 15 minutes to marinate. Serve.This salad will last (covered) in the frid-

and bubbly personalities and they do every-thing together, which included respondingto TygerBurger’s questions in chaotic har-mony.“We sing in our school choir and we have

danced together before, but nothing comesclose to this experience. Otello is truly anawesome, amazing and spectacular experi-ence,” says Tenille.“This (the Otello production) is a much

bigger stage and you have a huge audienceof about 1 500 people who are watching youperform,” says Jessica.“We are using our voicesmuch differently

than what we do singing at school,” addsNicole.In this dramatic and gripping production,

the girls are part of agroup of 15 children, withan overall cast of about100 people.“We play the roles of

poor flower sellers, whilewe are singing an Italiansong that we had to learn.“And we have to wear

the weirdest clothes,” saythe girls laughing.According to the girls,

they have been selectedby their choir teacher onrequest from the choirmaster at the Artscape forthe cast of Otello.“We had auditions in

February and immediately started rehears-ing for Otello. We had our final dress re-hearsal on Thursday night (last week), infront of an audience that included our par-ents and high school learners in their schooluniforms who are doing Otello as part oftheir curriculum,” says Jessica.The girls say, although the production is

about three hours long, they only had a cur-tain call of about two minutes.“It is short, but so worth it all. The re-

hearsals, adrenaline rush and the nerves be-fore going on stage... It’s just an awesomefeeling,” says Tenille.In synchronisedharmony the girls all sing

about their cool dressing room. “We evenpitch an hour earlier for rehearsals just to

hang out and have fun and dance in ourdressing room. It has cool lights, mirrorsand a stunning view,” says Tenille.The future looks bright for these “three

stooges”, as they are lovingly called by theirfamily and friends because they are insepa-rable. They all have big dreams for the fu-ture.Tenille would like to be a singer or doctor

one day, while Nicole wants to be a singerand model.“I would like to be a film or music produc-

Anational classicalmusic competitionwithprize money of over R21 000 has just beenlaunched by SACS High School, a memberof the SACS Old Boys’ Union.

The competition is open to anyone be-tween 11 and 20 years old and playing anyof the following instruments: brass, guitar,harp, percussion, piano, recorder, strings,voice and woodwind.

There are two preliminary rounds and a

final round, for which two finalists will bechosen in each category.

The competition runs from Thursday 8August to Thursday 15 August at SACS inthe Hofmeyr Hall.

By hosting a national classical musiccompetition, SACS intends to nurture themusical development of young people andto enhance its commitment to promotingmusic at SACS.

Agroup of emergency personnel of ER24 re-cently visited the On the Corner Day Carein Parow North.The aim of the visit was to educate the

children and adults alike on road safety ina fun and exciting way.ER24 staff shared general safety informa-

tion, tips and numbers. They also held vari-ous demonstrations to show the children ina practical way what they do on a daily ba-sis.Among other demonstrations, they pre-

tended that a little boy, Romeo Lancaster,who did not hold his mommy’s hand whencrossing the street, got hit by a car.The ER24 team arrived on the scene and

loaded him into an ambulance on a stretch-er.The children were also shown the emer-

gency equipment and they even got to sitin the front and back of the ambulance, andsome even got to put the sirens on.

Road safety with ER24ER24 paramedics had a great time visiting the staff and children from On the Corner Day Care.

It’s been a career filledwithhighlights andfond memories dating back to 1959 whereit all began for James Bezuidenhout.Last year James, now living in Bellville

for some time, received an honorary hon-ours lifetime achievement award from theSouth African Wrestling Federation.“From the moment I started amateur

wrestling I fell in love with the sport. Ittaught me a great deal about life. About per-severance, respect for yourself and others,”James said.His career started under the guidance of

coach Hansie Theunissen at the Queens-burgh Wrestling Club in Durban.

Determined“I was wrestling for three years without

a win, I just couldn’t get that first win underthe belt. It just made me more determinedto work harder,” he said.“I will never forget that day I wonmy first

match. It was also the first match my momwasable towatchmeon themat.When Iwonthe feeling was indescribable. Needless tosay it was even more special sharing it withmy mother.”James went on to become a Natal champi-

on.He represented Natal for many years in

various capacities from juniorwrestler, sen-ior wrestler, coach, official, secretary, treas-urer and head coach.In 1982 a new chapter began right here in

Cape Town, Parow to be more exact, wherehe was until 2005 part of Western Provincewrestling.In 1984 he was the founder of the Parow

Wrestling Club and head coach.He was the chairman ofWestern Province

from 1983 to 2005.
