Centre, is verlede week amptelik geopenen is die produk van ’n toegewyde opvoe-der, Mack Frantz.Frantz, leer-ondersteuner, het ook van

KlaskamersBinne die biblioteek,wat in twee klaska-

mers ingerig is, is daar aan weerskantevan die mure boekrakke – ten volle toege-rus met lees- en naslaanboeke. In die mid-del van albei klaskamers is daar sitplekke,tafels en potplante op die vensterbank asverdere versiering.“Die een biblioteek het ons as ’n oopein-

de-biblioteek ingerig, waar ons die kin-ders se leeslus prikkel.”Die groter biblioteek het twee dele – een

waar die leerder kan lees en ontspan, en

projek deur talle mense en organisasiesondersteun en is Frantz vol vertroue datdié tekort ook eendag iets van die verledesal wees.

“Die hoof wat binnekort aftree, het ooksy volle samewerking gegee. Hy is ’n sterktaalmens en hou van Afrikaans.“Hy is opgewonde oor die biblioteek en

ek vertrou hy gaan ná vandag (Woensdag)dit as ’n baie groot mylpaal in sy loopbaanbeskou,” het Frantz gesê.Johannes Swarts, adjunkhoof, het die

herlewing van die nou meer kleurvolle bi-blioteek beskryf as ’n “nodigheid.”“Daar was ’n biblioteek oor die jare,

maar daarwas nie altyd genoegsamehulp-bronne om die biblioteek funksioneel temaak nie.“Die nuwe biblioteek maak vir ons baie

deure oop in die sin dat ons die kinders salkan ondersteun.“Ons plan is om die biblioteek in die ko-

mende jare in ’n volhoubare bronne-sen-trum te ontwikkel.“Ons sien uit daarna om die projek ver-

AKleinvlei police rifleman raked in the me-dals at recent rifle competitions.Rifleman Captain Gustav Compion, mem-

ber of the Kleinvlei Police, received a rangeofmedals forhis participation in theCombatRifle National Championship.Compion,who also received a series ofme-

dals at Combat Rifle Shooting in July thisyear, was selected to represent the WesternCape combat rifle team to participate at theNational Police Combat Rifle Champions-hip, as well as the National Championship.The competition was held from 18 to 28

September at the General De Wet ShootingRange in Bloemfontein.It was the 40th consecutive year the com-

petition took place.Compion won a total of six medals and

went through to the Top 100 Shottists Com-petition held on the Friday.Brigadier Vincent Beaton, cluster com-

mander, congratulated Compion on hisachievements.Compion started competing after noticing

a competition advertisement in his local pa-per.

A programme to raise awareness about therisk of child pedestrians was launched inMfuleni on Tuesday.Provincial transport and public works

minister Donald Grant unveiled Safely Ho-me’s children pedestrian safety posters atItsitsa Primary School.The launch formed part of the depart-

ment’s Transport Month, celebratedthroughout October.The poster campaign added to a string of

events held to highlight the dangers facedby children on the roads. Events includeda child pedestrian fatalities map, scholartransport operations and radio campaigns.Grant said statistics show most children

are knocked down on streets from 14:00 onweekdays, and onweekends when “parentsshould be looking after their children”.Talking about accidents in the province,

Grant said provincial government spendsmillions on road accident incidents, especi-ally when compared to education and he-alth.“We have to pass on the message to com-

munities, aswell as talk to taxi associationsand all motorists. The awareness must gobeyond the school boundaries,” he said.As part of the campaign, a total of 300 pos-

ters were erected around Nkazimulo Pri-mary School in Khayelitsha, where a boywas runover at a pedestrian crossing inAu-gust.Posters were also erected in Delft and

aroundOscarMpethaHigh School inNyan-ga.Deputy director for road safety manage-

ment, David Frost, believes speed limits inresidential areas must be reduced.Frost explained the chance of survival is

greater if a child is knocked down by a cardriving at 20km/h, as opposed to one travel-ling at 60km/h.“Drivers should be aware of children, not

the other way around,” he said.Itsitsa Primary School principal Simphi-

we Ulana said none of the school’s pupilshad been knocked down since the schoolopened in 2006.Buthehopes speedbumps could be instal-

The guitarist behind Afrikaans rockband, Zinkplaat, has been quietlyworking on a side project that’s been

picking up steam.Basson Laubscher started Basson Laub-

scher & The Violent Free Peace in about2004, while still playing with Zinkplaat, asa way for him to play some of the music heloved outside of the band.“This project started very organically,” he

says. Being a fan of blues himself, The Vio-lent Free Peace started out as a cover bandand a way to have fun.“It kind of grew into something else.”Today the band,made up of Basson on gui-

tar and vocals, Beitel Van Der Merwe onbass and Jan Fyfer on drums, plays whatBasson describes as a good mix betweenblues, rock, folk and country.Although the band released their debut-

EP, Shakedown, earlier this year, Bassonsays their sound is rawer and a lot louderthan what you’ll hear on the album.When they band first started, the line up

has a bit of a stigma attached to it.“People usually think of old grey guys sit-

ting in a corner playing the same 12 bar stuffover and over.”Hismusic is definitely influenced by blues

though. As a child, Basson discovered his fa-

ther’s vinyl collection at the age of 14.“He had this vinyl of this crazy dude with

this big hat and pink cowboy boots and a re-ally beaten up guitar. I remember I put it onand from the first track, the virus set in.”The crazy dude was Stevie Ray Vaughn

and Basson was hooked.“It’s undeniable, if it’s in you, it’s in you.”Basson says his songs are like his chil-

dren, and he’s not ready to choose the oneshe’ll take on stage for the summit, but hemight just throw in a Led Zeppelin numberduring his set.The Table Mountain Blues Summit runs

The left lane is dedicated totraffic from the north side ofthe parking, the middle lane isfor traffic exiting the circle’souter lane towards Old OakAvenue, and the right lane isfor traffic exiting the circle’sinner lane towards Old OakAvenue. Traffic on the innerlane may also proceed furtheraround the circle if required.

It is idiotically dangerous tocut from the inner lane circleto the other two. Despite this,just about every time I drivethere is some idiot who tries toshove me across this barrierline.

Consider any of the roadswhich intersect with DurbanRoad. These roads have onelane in each direction. DurbanRoad has two lanes in eachdirection.

If you wish to turn left ontoDurban Road, you are requiredto turn into the left lane; thesame for the right lane

There are solid barrier linesbetween the two lanes and it isillegal to enter the right lanefrom the left – and vice-versa –as it would entail crossing thesolid barrier line.

It is dangerous to cut into theright lane from the left side.Despite this, just about everytime I drive there some left-turning idiot tries to shove meinto the centre island when Iturn right onto Durban Road.

Please wake up. Be aware ofthe road environment in whichyou drive.

Gideon Drotschie is itching to getback in the hexagon after a year’slay-off with a back injury, and

looks forward to defending his heavy-weight title against Norman Wessels onThursday night.

Drotschie, known as the “Jugger-naut”, last fought at EFC 25 in Novem-ber last year when he successfully de-fended his title against Fraser Opie.

According to head coach Rico Hat-tingh of REPS Fitness in Bellville, Nor-man “Chef” Wessels will be the toughestopponent in Drotschie’s short but everso successful professional career thusfar. “This will be our toughest fight yet,no doubt. But having said that, we arevery confident that Gideon will retainhis title. We thoroughly did our homework and we are prepared.

Raring to go“We know Norman’s strong points

and we know where to attack. The im-portant thing for us is to focus on ourown game. Training has been excep-tionally good and Gideon recoverednicely from a niggling back injury. Heis fit and raring to go,” said Hattingh.

Gideon is counting the days to fight

night. “It’s been a while since I foughtin the EFC, and to make my comebackin front of my home crowd at Grand-West definitely counts in my favour. Iam ready for anything that Norman willthrow at me.

fessional fight at the end of August atEFC 33 in Durban, is brimming withconfidence. Michael also trains underHattingh.

“It feels good to have that first win asa professional in the bag. I will also faceRegis Muyambo at EFC 35. I am lookingforward to getting in a solid perform-ance in front of our local fans and keep-ing a clean record,” said Michael.

Michael lives and breathes MMA. “Heis one of the most dedicated and hardworking individuals in the sport. He isstill a rookie, but give him a chance, heis going places in the industry. He istough as nails, and his technique isright up there. I am very excited abouthis future,” said Hattingh.

The Table View Football Club women’steams had a splendid year, receivingthree top awards at the recent Tygerbergsenior league awards dinner.

Table View was the 2014 league winner,and won the Team of the Year trophy.

Ashley Kondowe was also announcedas the Player of the Year.

Table View held their own awards din-ner two weeks ago and Kondowe was thestar of the evening. She was awarded thePlayer of the Year in the Women’s TeamAward and the Club Senior Awards cate-

Robyn Windsor was the Players’ Playerof the Year, and Estelle Martin was crow-ned the Most Improved Player of the Ye-ar. Gary Heyburgh, who did a phenome-nal job as coach of the women’s first team,was awarded Coach of the Year.

Following an exciting 2014 season, fiercecompetition marked the national finals ofthe Spur High School Mountain Bike Leaguethat was hosted at Bekker School in Maga-liesburg.

A record number of 355 riders represen-ting the cream of high school mountain bikeriders from more than 69 schools acrossSouth Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe whocompeted in the two-day event.

DF Malan, who formed part of the WesternCape team, came third in the interprovincialtournament. The 4.5km track at BekkerSchool proved more challenging than previ-ous seasons, boasting a lot of single trackstretches as well as tricky falls and climbsthat required both stamina and technicalskills from the riders. The lap-race formatof the event saw the various age categoriescomplete a specific number of laps ranging

from two laps for the sub-junior girls to a tes-ting five laps for the junior men.

The team from Menlopark High Schoolwas on top form and secured four podium po-sitions as well as logging a number of top tenpositions to secure both the girls and mixedteam national championship trophies, whileGrey College in Bloemfontein won the boysteam category.

The league was launched in 2009 as a jointinitiative between Spur and Amarider tocreate a fun racing environment for child-ren, and has also facilitated the building ofmountain bike tracks on school propertyand community grounds.

Earlier this year the league cemented itsposition as one of the leading sport develop-ment programmes in the country when itwas shortlisted as a finalist for the 2014 Dis-covery Sport Industry Awards.

A once functional and modern sports fa-cility in Wesbank near Kuils River isnow little more than a derelict build-

ing.Last week some concerned Wesbank resi-

dents said vandals moved in when the care-taker and security were removed. They sayunless local government intervene, nothingbut the structure’s foundation will remain.

Vandalism of the sport facility – a clubhouse with showers and toilets – started atthe beginning of the year, they say, andmany residents believe proper security isneeded.

Since January, walls have been brokendown, wash basins and doors have been re-moved, and the geyser stolen.

Filled with rubbishThe extent of the damage was noted when

TygerBurger visited the site.The one room was filled with rubbish. The

toilets are out of order and most furniturehas either been broken or stolen.

The club house was once the office of a lo-cal PR councillor and the changing roomswere utilised by the Wesbank United andYoung Tigers soccer clubs, said deputy chair

of the Mfuleni CPF, Patrick Madasi.“Sport teams made use of the facility, but

now it is vandalised. The poles of the soccerpitch have been stolen, the roof and wiresare damaged, everything is damaged. It willtake time to renovate this place again,” Ma-dasi said.

He said the City of Cape Town needs to in-tervene. “They have been notified of what isgoing on,” he said.

DisappointedDebbie Davids, PA to PR councillor Nom-

feko Sono, who once occupied one of the of-fices, said they are equally disappointed.They had to remove their furniture and of-fice equipment after the caretaker advisedthem to do so. “We as the community needto stand up against this. It is unfair thatyoung children are doing this,” she said.

Pastor Cornelius Pieters, secretary of thelocal municipality facility managementcommittee (MFMC) who manages sport fa-cilities in the area, desribed the vandalismas a sad event.

He toldTygerBurger the board took the de-cision to appoint two community membersto stay at the facility in order to prevent fur-ther theft. “Since then there has not beenany further vandalism.”

struggle to afford women’s hygiene pro-ducts.Staggeringly, there are about sevenmilli-

on girls who miss a week of school everymonth because they cannot afford sanitaryproducts, says Chrisna van Lille, who ispart of a women’s cycling team aiming tohelp such young women.The all-women group, SUBZHeroes, will

be taking part in the Coronation DoubleCentury on Saturday 22 November, Chris-na said.The event is a 202 kilometre road cycling

race from Swellendam through Suurbraak,Ashton,Montagu, Robertson and then backthrough Bonnievale to Swellendam.“This distance must be covered in amax-

imum of 10 hours, but we aim to completeit in nine.“We are an all-female team and cycle for

the charity SUBZ Washable Pads and Pan-ties,” Chrisna said.SUBZ is a registered NPO – their slogan

is “To give girls back their dignity”.SUBZdistribute sanitarypackets to these

girls each consisting of three panties andnine washable pads.One packet cost R200 and can last a girl

up to five years, Chrisna added.She said they wanted to ensure teenage

girls did not have to miss school due to ahealthy biological function.She said the group, mostly women from

Kuils River, Brackenfell and Durbanville,are becoming popular and similar groupshave started in Durban and Johannesburg.“There are so many people becoming in-
