Gangsterism is a major threat, say po-lice in the Kuils River Police Cluster,and a concern all three police stations

in the cluster are currently having to face.Speaking at a media briefing held at the

Mfuleni Police Station last Thursday, clus-ter commander Brigadier Vincent Beatonsaid the entire cluster – comprising theKleinvlei, Kuils River and Mfuleni policestations – is currently focusing on this issue.According to him this issue also generatesother crimes such as murder and attemptedmurders.

Beaton gave police senior managementand the media a brief background of crimethreats in the cluster.“At all three stations we actually focus on

gangsterism. Our trio crimes which arehouse and business robbery, car-hijacking,general robberies, burglary in residentialareas and domestic violence, are also majorconcerns.”There are hotspots for each of these

crimes.Referring to gangsterism and drugs, Bea-

ton said the threat and concern for Mfulenipolice was gangsterism and robbery, whichis concentrated in Bardale Village.“Another area of concern is Wesbank

where mostly gang activities are reported,similarly in Happy Valley and near theBlackheath railway station.”Asked about community members’ re-

quest for more patrols and a satellite policestation inWesbank, Beaton said the satellitepolice station and visible police are actuallylinked to each other.“There is a perception that there is a lack

of visible policing. We are, however, imple-menting sector police in the area at the mo-ment and have done so successfully.“We have vehicles in the sectors that at-

tend to the complaints and conduct crimeprevention initiatives,” he said.“Our resources are currently stretched, so

in terms of the establishment of a satellitepolice station, our strategy is to rather in-crease the personnel in terms of sector polic-ing.“Currently we have increased the deploy-

ment. We have high visibility patrols, espe-cially over weekends when crime is at itshighest, especially at night.”Colonel Luyanda Damoyi, station com-

mander at Mfuleni police station which pa-trols this area, said overweekends theyhaveadditional personnel, including personnelfrom other units such as the Public OrderPolicing, who assist. “This is our peak timeregarding gangsterism,” Damoyi said.

We then have deploymentin the area,” Jacobs said.Beaton said it was important to know thatthere was a “very good and effective” gangstrategy in the cluster and province.“We have regularmeetings where we onlyaddress gangsterism. We have a database ofall the cases, we know who is involved inthese cases andwehave avery good coopera-tion with crime intelligence who give us in-formation about these gang’s activity.He said many gang members were arrest-ed and bail successfully opposed.Police have daily search and seizure oper-ations and also execute a lot of search war-rants in areas such as Wesbank.“We confiscate a lot of firearms from thegangs, and ammunition.”Apart fromWesbank and Kalkfontein, po-lice in Kleinvlei also have to deal with this

threat.“The hotspots in Kleinvlei areMalibu Vil-lage, Spandau, Melton Rose, Kleinvlei andalong Old Faure Road,” Beaton said.He said Old Faure Road near Mfuleni is a“huge challenge”. The area is known forprostitution and robberies.“Here ladies of the night hang around theareawhere gentlemanpick themup, do theirbusiness and then the so called clients getrobbed. This is a problem for us, butwe haveinterventions there,” he said.“We discovered there is a lot of crime inthat area, we therefore developed a databaseof all of the cases. Every day there is deploy-ment in the area and since these interven-tions crime has gone down.”Earlier this year TygerBurger reported onmembers of the police service also frequent-ing Old Faure Road. Asked about the seniormanagement’s steps against thesemembers,Beaton said if anybody has information thatpolice are involved in prostitution, theyshould informhim. “I need that informationas soon as possible, we will act on it.”

The Kuils River Police Cluster hosted a media briefing last week during which crime trends,hotspots and police successes were discussed. Brigadier Vincent Beaton, cluster commander(seated right) said all three police stations in the cluster focus on gangsterism. The police in Kuils River are investigatingthe murder of a bouncer at a well knownnightclub in the area earlier this week.The deceased, a Congolese man whoseidentity is still unknown, was shot deadwhile on duty at about 21:30 onWednesday.Police spokesperson Isaac van Niekerksaid the victim was attacked while sittingon a chair outside the nightclub.An unknown man approached him, tookout a firearm and shot him.“The information thatwe received is thatthe suspectwaswearing a blackhoodie anda pair of blue jeans. He also wore black andwhite sneakers,” van Niekerk added.“At this stage we cannot confirm wheth-er there were any other people outside thenightclub. At the moment we just search-ing for one suspect. The motive for the kill-ing is also still unclear.”

Two Wesbank teenagers appeared in theBlue Downs Magistrate Court on Mondayon charges of murder and attempted mur-der.

The two, aged between 17 and 19 years,were arrested over the weekend followingthemurderof 13-year-oldLeonJansenwhowas shot dead on Friday at about 14:15.

CPF member Edith van Wyk said themurder was allegedly gang related.

Mfuleni police spokesperson Noma-themba Muavha said police attended theshooting incident at Wolvengat Street, af-ter two people were caught in cross fire.

“A 13-year-old boy was hit in the headand a 20 year old female was hit in thefoot,” Muavha said.

Leon was in grade 7 at at Rainbow Pri-mary.

It is still unclear how many shots were

fired and where the victim was hit.“The information that we received is that

the suspect was wearing a black hoodie anda pair of blue jeans. He also wore black andwhite sneakers,” van Niekerk added.

The police are still following-up on leads.“The suspect fled in the direction of the

Pick n Pay in the vicinity of the incident,”said van Niekerk.

The victim died at the scene and a murdercase was opened.

“At this stage we cannot confirm whetherthere were any other people outside thenightclub. At the moment we just searchingfor one suspect. The motive for the killing isalso still unclear.”

The Africanis dog is a “landrace” – a re-sult of natural selection and adaptationthroughout the centuries.

Unlike a landrace, breeds such as grey-hounds or labradors have been created byhumans choosing specific traits such ashunting skill or fur colour. They are selec-tively bred to get a uniform behaviour andappearance. Some breeds were landracesbred in an attempt at standardisation.

However, as soon as you standardise alandrace with selective breeding it be-comes a breed, not a landrace.

Africanis dogs are not uniform in appear-ance as it is an umbrella term for a few dif-ferent “strains”.

They are generally medium-sized with afunctional, slender build, wedge-shapedheads and long muzzles. Their short coatsare usually light-brown, but can be brin-dled or patched. Some also have a “ridge-back”.

A feature common to them all is theirhighly expressive faces and beautiful, soul-ful eyes ringed with black “eyeliner” mark-ings.

They are agile, hardy and fast, as well asvery alert and tend to have very few health

problems.But it is in the per-

sonality category thatthe Africanis reallyexcels. Because theyhave evolved along-side people, they tend

to be exceptionally good-natured and even-tempered, as well as being loyal and protec-tive.

An initiative to get teens interested inthe world of media is currently under-way at a Mfuleni high school.

The initiative, a high school magazinewhich was launched a week ago at Man-zomthombo Senior Secondary school, wasstarted by one of the school’s teachers hop-ing to cultivate future writers and photogra-phers.Teacher Jonathan Mangwiro told Tyger-

Burger this week that he is happy with thefirst product – Volume 1.“But I am looking forward to the ones that

will follow.”Jonathan did the first project mostly by

himself but was assisted by some learners.He said the objective is to get scholars

completely involved, to train them the art ofwriting, photography and editing.“This is not the first school magazine I

havewritten. I did a similar project at a highschool in Lwandle, near Strand in 2013,”Jonathan said on Wednesday.He joined Manzomthombo Senior Second-

ary School in September 2013.Jonathan, who has no background in jour-

nalism, said the reason why he wanted aschool magazine at Manzomthombo is sothat the school can have its own identity.“It will help uplift the relationship be-

tween the school, the parents and otherstakeholders, as well as impart the knowl-edge of journalism to the children who willhopefully be working as journalists on thenext edition.“Apart from marketing our school, the

magazine is also a way of looking for donorsto help the school, where we lack funds,”Jonathan said.He said with the establishment of a maga-

zine, the school – with an average pass rateof 85% over the last five years – will be ableto showother schools that theyare also capa-ble of running a magazine.“It will also indicate that we are united,”

said Zimbabwean-born Jonathan.The first edition was centred around in-

troducing the teachers at the school and thevarious activities which the school offers.Jonathan started writing in January.“The learners need time to learn more

The chil-dren who wereselected to par-ticipate in theday are part ofthe CJCP’sFamilyPreser-vation Chil-dren Club – anafter school programme for chil-dren between the ages 6 and 11years old. Approximately 20 chil-dren participated in the day’sevent.

“They are all from Wesbank,”Erica said.

Anthea Davids, project coordi-nator at the CJCP, said the mainobjective of the day was to givechildren the opportunity to learn

about the value of money.“Most of them struggle with

money and finances. If their par-ents donotwork theycan thensell

“Sometimesthey expectmore fromtheir parentsbut they do notknow the valueofwhat they re-ceive,” Antheaadded.

The children had to calculatethe money they earned, subtractand add.

Despite being blind, Kuils River adven-turer and sportsman Hein Wagnercontinues to set new limits and push

boundaries.Wagner, a businessman, philanthropist

and motivational speaker who completed agruelling marathon race in the Antarcticearlier this year, was recently selected asHonorary Patron of the Imago Maris – theonly ship in the world crewed by blind andpartially sighted individuals, spokespersonBernadette Grant Smit said.

The main aim of the project is to organisesea voyages on big sailing ships where halfthe crew consists of blind and visually im-paired people. What makes a real differenceis that all participants are full crew mem-bers, which means that they perform all thetasks on the ship – starting from cookingfor 40 people, ensuring maintenance work,steering and navigating the ship, Berna-dette said.

HumbledWagner, founder of VisionTrust, was ap-

proached by the Imago Maris Foundationdue to the fact that his activities inspirepeople worldwide.

“Theorganisation foundout aboutmyad-ventures via the web and I think my inter-est in sailing moved them to make contactwith me,” says Hein.

“I was humbled by the request to becomethe patron for such a potentially life chang-

ing concept. I knew what it meant to me asa blind person to help crew a yacht duringthe 1993 Cape to Rio yacht race. Full partici-pation in all crew tasks give blind or visual-ly impaired people the opportunity to be-come more self-confident, not only on boardbut also in their everyday life, and thusmake them believe in their own success.”

Hein’s main responsibilities as HonoraryPatron of the Imago Maris will be to pro-mote the project by getting others involved.

“I will promote sailing for the blind, andlove a challenge. Taking it on with fellowblind individuals will make it so muchmore special. I’m sure we’ll all learn fromone another and have a fantastic time!”

First AfricanAlthough Hein is based in South Africa

and the Imago Maris in Europe, he will notlet this affect his passion towards theproject. “I’d love to join them at some pointand be part of the blind crew.”

Gavin Smith, was on her way to visit herbrother in hospital in Mitchells Plainwhen the attack occurred.The incidenthappenedonTuesday29Ju-

ly, Gavin told TygerBurger this week.“My daughter and I were at a karate ses-

sion that I give in Mitchells Plain. My wifedecided to go visit her brother in hospitalafter dropping us off. She did not feel toowell and asked a friend to take her there,”Gavin explained.Natasha and her friend stopped at a set

of traffic lights at the AZ Berman and R300 crossing when a unknown man ap-proached them.“A guy came towards the window. She

thought he was begging,” he said.Seconds later the window shattered.“He grabbed her bag which was on her

lap.”According toGavin a struggle ensued be-

tween his wife and the robber.“He was obviously stronger than her.

The strap of the bag broke and he (the rob-ber) ran towards the bushes,” Gavin said.He said all of his wife’s valuables were

in the bag.“We now have to endure all the hassle

of changing the locks. The keys to the

house were in the bag, a letter with our postaladdress as well,” said Gavin.Natasha’s wallet with some cash, and her

identity book was also in the bag.“The money was money that she had col-

lected that same evening,” he said. He said alist of collections for karate students wantingto travel to the SA Championship in Johan-nesburg was also taken.“There was at least R800 on the list.”Natasha injured her hand during the at-

tack. Some of the glass splinters also scarredher face.“She is not over the event yet. Emotionally

she is not doingwell, the incident is still play-ing in her mind,” said Gavin.The matter was reported to the police, who

offered trauma counselling, added Gavin.Gavin himself went to visit the scene the

next day.“It was shocking what I saw in the bush.

I saw a few bags lying there, this seems to behappening a lot in that area.“We personally never knew that that spot

was a hotspot for smash-and-grabs,” Gavinsaid.

A local businessman is setting out ona music adventure, having just rele-ased his debut album, Verily, Verily.

Hyram Doolings, a Zevenwacht familyman, has roped in some of Cape Town’sfinest musicians to help on the gospel al-bum he launched in Kenridge this wee-kend.

“As a little boy I always wanted to sing,”Hyram says. His grandmother took him tochurch where she in-troduced him to thechoir master and itwas just a few monthsbefore he was singingsolo.

“The choir used tosit upstairs and the pe-ople used to turn theirbacks to see who thislittle boy singing is,”Hyram recalls.

Almost 50 yearsdown the line, Hy-ram’s desire to singturned into a “huge de-sire to write”, andthat’s how Verily, Veri-ly was born.

As a Capetonian, Hy-ram says he was al-ways fascinated byjazz, and he alwayswanted to sing a “jazzykind of gospel”.

While he hopes to spread the messageof God’s love, some of the songs are relatedto his own struggles, which brought himcloser to God.

As a child, Hyram was exposed to an al-coholic father and an abusive mother, andsinging was an escape for the young boywho once tried to commit suicide by jum-ping into a river.

He was saved by his uncle, but thatwasn’t the end of his near-death experien-ces. He got trapped in quicksand, nearlydrowned, and was hit by a car, which sawhim go through twelve operations and oc-cupational therapy to even out his mouth.

“Some of the songs are related to the suf-

fering of Jesus and I could somehow to re-late to that through my own suffering, butnothing compares to his suffering for me,”Hyram says.

While he points out that this theme isn’texplicitly laid out in the lyrics, it can befound in the “feeling of the music”.

Hyram’s grandmother used to oftenread the Bible to him and his siblings andthe albums’ name come from a scriptureshe was particularly fond of, John5:24:“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, excepta man be born of water and of the Spirit,

he cannot enter intothe kingdom of God.”

He says it was hisgrandmother’s rea-ding that eventuallyled to the album,which he has dedica-ted to her.

Hyram says he takeshis hat off to the peoplewho worked with himon Verily, Verily. “It’sguys that have reallybeen in the industryfor a long time.”

Camillo Lombard,Jonathan Rubain andDonveno Prins are justsome of the names inthe album sleeve.

It’s with the help ofhis family and theloyal people that sur-round him that Hyram

knows his business is in safe hands whilehe pursues his music career. He felt, con-sidering how tough the local music indus-try is, that he wanted to build a career andhave some money in the bank before ta-king on the music world.

where he is going in life.Tristan, who attends Fairmont High

school, started his year by winning theDurbanville Junior Open in January atDurbanville, where he is a member.

“It was nice starting the year with a winonmyhome course. I really took some confi-dence from that win,” said Tristan.Tristan has represented Western Prov-

ince at u-14, u-15, u-17 and u-19 levels.In May he represented Western Province

in the Riversdal Triangular tournamentagainst Boland and SouthWestern Districts(SWD).“I didn’t play particularly well there and

my game wasn’t where it needed to be orwhere it can be. So heading into the SouthAfrican High School Golf Championshipsback in June in Bloemfontein, I didn’t haveany expectations.“I ended up in fifth place out of 88 individ-

uals, which was a great result for me. If youtold me at the beginning of the week that Iwould end fifth I would have taken it witha smile, considering my game wasn’t thatgreat.”He kept the momentum by winning the

Prentice Cup at Mowbray in July with a su-perb 71 and weeks later came very to a winat the Steenberg Junior Open, losing out inthe play-off for a second placing.
