kig en dit blyk asof daar niks aan die saakgedoen kan word nie.Toe die eienaars van Top Drop-drankwin-

kel in Hugostraat vir ’n dranklisensie aan-soek gedoen het, het Bernie Marchand, diehoof van die Fairbairn College, onmiddellikskrywes aan die polisie en drankraad gerigwaarin hy sy ontevredenheid oor die lisen-sie uitspreek.Toe die lisensie goedgekeur is, het hyweer

beswaar gemaak, maar dit blyk nou dat al

sy pleidooie op dowe ore geval het.“Die beheerraad van die skool kannie ver-

staan hoe ’n dranklisensie toegeken kanword aan ’n perseel wat skaars 40 meter vandie skool se hek af is nie. Dit is ’n feit datongewenste elemente hul drank onmiddel-lik drink nadat hulle dit gekoop het. Dit hou’n wesenlike gevaar in vir ons leerders watoor Oxford-straat moet loop,” sê ’n omge-krapte Marchand.

klagte meer handel oor haweloses, leeglêeryen rommelstrooi. “Ongelukkig kom hierdie

probleem reg oor die Wes-Kaap voor en kandit nie toegeskryf word aan die lisensiehou-er of aan ’n sake-onderneming op die toneelnie. In dié stadium is dit ’n aanname dat diedrankwinkel nagevolge gaan hê.

Lisensievoorwaardes“Die lisensiehouer gaan verantwoordelik

gehou word as daar nie aan lisensie-voor-waardes voldoen word nie. In dié stadiumword daar van die lisensiehouer verwag omsekerheidswagte aan te stel om in en om dieperseel orde te handhaaf. Oor die afstandtussen die drankwinkel en die skool is daargeen bewyse dat die verkoop van drank leer-ders negatief beïnvloed nie, aangesien daarreeds drank in die gebou verkoop word.”

Volgens hom ontstaan konflik as die ver-antwoordelikheidwat ouers vanhul tienersverwag, nie ooreenstem met die vryheidwat tieners vra nie.

“Ouers wil hê hul kinders moet verant-woordelikheid hê as hulle uit die huis gaan,maar hulle moet dit êrens leer.”

Wat is dit wat kinders moet bemeester opreis van kind na volwassene?

“Tienersmoet aanpas by ’n veranderendelyf en die gevoelenswat daarmee saamgaan.Tieners moet ook abstrakte denke aanleer– die impak daarvan nie net op akademiesegebied nie, maar ook wat betref godsdiens,kultuur, waardes en die doel van die lewe.Dis asof tieners se koppe letterlik ontplofmet gedagtes,” sê hy.

“Hullemoet ook leer omdinge in perspek-tief te sien en om hulle in ander se skoenein te dink, empatie ontwikkel en verstaandat hul ouers ook moeg en verkeerd kanwees.

“Dit gebeur nie outomaties nie, maar ons

as ouers moet as mentors optree,” het Ther-on voortgegaan.

Tieners moet leer om besluite te neem,probleme op te los en konflik te bestuur.Hulle moet ook hul eie persoonlike waarde-sisteem uitsorteer. “Dis ’n intense proses.Hulle kry ’n ‘tas’ wat hul ouers vir hulle ge-pak het, maar hulle moet nou self besluitwat hulle nie daarin wil hênie en kies wat hulle daarinwil hê.”

Iets wat die grootste in-vloed het op tieners op ’ndaaglikse basis, is hulvriendskappe. “Dit het ’nbaie groot invloed op hulwaardesisteme en is die se-ment van belangrike aspek-te van hul eie identiteit.”Terselfdertyd verwag die sa-melewing kinders moet be-weeg in die rigting vanmeerverantwoordelikheid en vol-wassenheid, sê Theron.

“Ons plaas baie druk op ons kinders enverwag hulle moet op 17-jarige ouerdomkies wat hulle vir die res van hul lewensmoet doen.” Die verhouding tussen tienersen hul ouers moet heronderhandel word. “

Jy sal nie jou kind van 5 jaar alleen by diehuis los nie, maar sal maklik ’n aand uit-gaan en jou kind van 17 jaar by die huis los.Dit impliseer ’n verandering in rol,” het hygesê.

Vir ouers is daar vyf basiese take. “Jymoet weet hoe om lief te wees vir iemandwat dit glad nie wil hê nie en sorg dat daar’n konneksie met jou kind bly.

“Al wat jy het, is ’n verhouding met jou

kind.As jyniedaaraanwerknie, het jyniks.“Omtrent alles in jou tiener sewêreld ver-

ander – jou liefdemoetnie eendaarvanweesnie. Ouers moet hul tieners monitor sonderdat dit soos ’n strafkamp is.

“Tieners voel ongemaklik met ’n omge-wing waar geen reëls is nie, maar jy moethulle toelaat om hul sê te sê. Jy wil ’n kind

grootmaak wat nie oor hullelaat loop in vriendskappe,by die werkplek en in ver-houdings nie.”

Theron het gesê ouersmoet die “energie en vreug-de wat tieners in ’n gespreken in hul gesin inbring,waardeer”.

“Bring tyd met jou tienerdeur;maak ’n afspraak as julalbei besig is.”

Ouers moet as mentor op-tree en betrokke bly en be-wus wees van hul kind sedoen en late, sy/haar skool-

werk en punte en naskoolse aktiwiteite,asook hul vriendskappe en verhoudingsmet ander volwassenes.

Die Stad Kaapstad het die belasting-betalersvereniging van Goodwoodse appèl teen die voorgenome slui-

ting van die Tygerdal-stortingsterreinvan die hand gewys.Die stortingsterrein is al ’n geruime tyd

’n twispunt met een groep inwoners watdit gesluit wil hê en ’n ander wat voel ditis ’n nodige euwel. Ná ’n uitgerekte pro-ses het die Stad, ingevolge die stadsbe-planningsraamwerk, besluit die gebiedwaar die stortingsterrein is, gaan vir be-huisingsdoeleindes ontwikkel word.Dié besluit het nie goed afgegaan by die

belastingbetalersvereniging nie. Hullehet onder meer gevoel die openbare deel-name-proses was onvoldoende, die be-sluit omdie terrein te sluitwas te drastiesen dat die terrein sluit oor klagtes van ’nminderheid inwoners. In die appèldoku-ment skryf die voorsitter van die belas-tingbetalersvereniging, Chris Theron, al-le belanghebbendes kon nie insae lewer

in die proses, ook omdat die beloofde drieopenbare vergaderings nie gehou is nie.Hy sê alternatiewe voorstelle van die

vereniging is ook nie oorweeg nie. “Dieterreinword reeds 20 jaar as stortingster-rein gebruik; dit is dus snaaks dat dit nouvir behuising gehersoneer gaan word,”redeneer Theron. Hy sê dit blyk dat dieStad nie na sy inwoners wil luister nie.“Ek is uiteraard bitter teleurgesteld

oor die terugvoerwat ons ontvanghet oor’n saak wat vir ons baie belangrik is,” sêTheron. In reaksie sê die Stad die vereni-ging se appèl is ongegrond en dat hullegeleentheid gehad het om deel te neemaan die proses. RustimKeraan, die direk-teur van die Stad se vasteafval-bestuur,skryf in reaksie op die appèl dat die ter-rein nie gaan sluit oor klagtes van die pu-bliek nie, maar omdat daar huise gebougaan word. TygerBurger het vroeër berigdat ’n erf langs die verkeersdepartementin Beaconvale geïdentifiseer is as nuwestortingsterrein en dat die Tygerdal-stor-tingsterrein amptelik op 1 Desember vol-gende jaar gaan sluit.

eas – graceful, well-balanced dogs withsmooth coats in a multitude of colours andpatterns over long, lean-muscled limbs.TheAfricanis dog is a “landrace” – a result

of centuries of natural selection and adapta-tion. Unlike a landrace, breeds such as grey-hounds or labradors have been created byhumans choosing specific traits such ashunting skill or fur colour. They are selec-tively bred for uniform behaviour and ap-

pearance. However, assoon as you standard-ise a landrace with se-lective breeding it be-comes a breed, not alandrace. Africanisdogs are not uniform in

appearance as it is an umbrella term for afew different “strains”.They are generally medium-sized with a

slender build, wedge-shaped heads and longmuzzles. Their short coats are usually light-brown, but can be brindled or patched. Somealso have a “ridgeback”.A feature common to them all is their ex-

pressive faces and beautiful, soulful eyesringed with black “eyeliner” markings.They are agile, hardy, fast, very alert and

tend to have very few health problems.

Baie van die meubels wat vandag nog insy huis staan, het hy of selfgemaak of reggemaak.“Daar was nie geld vir nuutkoop nie, so ek het maartweedehandse goed afge-skuur en weer gebruik. Selfsmy tools het ek self gemaak.”

Hy wys na die deur wat uitdie kombuis na die voorka-mer lei. ’n Raam van pragti-ge Oregon is daarom aange-bring. “Ek het dit self ge-maak; selfs die kaste in mykombuis het ek met my eiehandegemaak,” sêhyenwysna die groen kaste met dieblommotief. Hy straal vantrots, omdat hy darem ietshet om te wys vir jare se ar-beid. Oor die jare het hy dieklein meubels gemaak en bydie mark in Paardeneiland

verkoop. Ook kopstukke vir beddens, foto-rame, speelgoed en alles waaraan hy kondink. Met sy houtwerk kon hy selfs sy huisin Texelstraat koop.

Werner Vermaak, woordvoerder van diénoodhulpdiens, het Saterdag gesê hy en syspan het navorsing oor die nuwe “vuur-uit-daging”-verskynsel gaan doen, nadat hulleiemand op YouTube opgespoor het wie seuitsluitlike doel dit is om sulke gevaarlike“speletjies” die wêreld in te stuur.

’n Vorige soortgelyke speletjie was die eenwaarin mense – meestal kinders – mekaarmoes verwurg totdat hulle flou word, om glo’n gevoel van euforie te beleef net voordatbewusteloosheid – of die dood – intree.

Die sogenaamde “neknominations” is ook’n onlangse een. Dié speletjie verwag van diedeelnemer om hulself te verfilm terwyl hy/sy ’n alkoholiese drankie, gewoonlik bier, ineen asemteug wegslaan en dan die video opdie internet laai. Die deelnemer nomineerdan twee ander om dieselfde te doen.

“Ons wou met dié nuwe gier die publiekvroeër begin waarsku. Ons wil mense bewusmaak daarvan, want dit begin al klaar ‘rond-loop’, en kinders kyk mos na dié of daardienuwe gier,” het hy gesê.

Verwurging“Met die laaste gier, verwurging, het ons

eers heelwat ná die aanvang uitgevind daar-van.”

Werner sê dié skok-speletjie, waarinmeestal kinders hulself met enige vlambarevloeistowwe bespuit en oortrek en dan aandie brand steek “om te sien wat die uiteindedaarvan sal wees” , het nog nie die noordeli-

ke voorstede getref nie. Hy sê as deel van hulnavorsing oor die nuwe verskynsel, het hyen sy span rekords van brandwonde nage-gaan om spesifiek te kyk waar dié gier dieoorsaak daarvan kon wees, maar kon nieenige sulke gevalle opspoor nie.

“Ons het gelukkig nog geen oproepe ont-vang, of enige gewondes gevind wat ons aandié speletjie kon toeskryf nie,” het hy gesê.

Hy sê egter op van die beeldmateriaal wathulle oor die vuur-uitdaging gesien het,“skree die mense van die pyn”.

“Dis ’n uitdaging wat soos ’n virus ver-sprei het op sosiale media, waar die deelne-mer gewilliglik hulself aan die brand steekdeur vlambare vloeistowwe aan hulself tewend, soos om alkohol aan hul lyf te smeer,en om dan die uiteinde te verfilm.

“Die uitdaging is om jouself aan die brandte steek en dan die vlamme so gou moontlikte blus, maar dit het selde ’n wenslike uit-koms,” sê Werner.

BorshareHy sê die eerste so ’n video wat hulle kon

vind, dateer terug na April 2012, waarin ’nYouTube-gebruiker glo sy borshare aan diebrand steek. Dié video het meer as 100 000trefslae gekry, sê Werner.

Hy sê die mees onlangse geval was op 24Julie en is in ’n aanlynkoerant gepubliseer.

’n Kind het in dié voorval gesterf nadat syvriende die vlamme nie gou genoeg kon blusnie.

“Hierdie uitdagings raak nie nét kindersnie, maar ook volwassenes. Handbag thief nabbedThe man who has allegedly been target-ing women walking to Century City andstealing their handbags and cellphones,has been arrested.

The 39-year-old suspect from Phoenixwas arrested by Milnerton police after co-operation with Century City Securitypaid dividends.

local police spokesperson, W/ODaphne O’Reilly, says the man appearedin court and the case was postponed toMonday 4 August.

“On Friday 24 July at 06:30 an incidenttook place in Martell Road, Tygerhof. Thevictim noticed a silver/grey vehicle,which pulled up in front of her. The driv-er jumped out and pointed a firearm ather.”

The man demanded her handbag andcellphone and drove off with her belong-ings.

Soon thereafter the police requestedthe assistance of Michael Wheeler of Cen-tury City Security, who were asked to gothrough video footage to see if he couldidentify the vehicle.

This was a success and the registrationnumber could be identified.

The suspect was arrested at his housein Phoenix. Upon further investigationthe complainant’s handbag and cellphone were found in the boot of his car.

“There were also other handbags andpersonal belongings in the boot,” saysO’Reilly.

“The suspect was arrested and taken toMilnerton police station where he waslinked to three other robbery cases whichtook place in the last three weeks. Wewish to thank Century City Security fortheir constant assistance in fightingcrime and bringing perpetrators tocourt.”

If vagrants take garbage from a refuse bin,is it theirs? And what if a member of thepublic then takes the vagrant’s bag? Is thattheft?These questions came to the fore after a

Parklands woman recently seized a va-grant’s bag and refused to give it back.Outgoing community police forum chair-

person Andrew Brace, and previous princi-pal inspector of the Displaced People’s Unit(DPU), Wayne Aldridge, clarified the mat-ter to TygerBurger.“If you put something into the municipal

refuse bin andmove the bin off your proper-ty then the contents of the bin belongs tothe City of Cape Town. While the bin is onyour property it still belongs to you.”

He says a person has as little right to takea vagrants bag as it is for the vagrant to takesomething out of the bin.In such a situationAldridge says it is best

to notify the police, who are within theirrights to seize the bag. “It is up to the streetperson to prove that whatever is in that bagbelongs to him or her,” he continues.“One thing is certain, members of the

public should be very careful they don’tsubject themselves to a charge of assaultwhile they try to remove a bag which in re-ality does not belong to them.”Brace says the DPU can remove a variety

of items from vagrants. “These include anyitem that can be used to erect any type ofstructure, shelter or cover for possible un-lawful occupation of city owned land; shop-ping trolleys and carts; and any other itemsthat might be stolen goods.

With 35 years of hits to choose from, Frenchpianis, Richard Clayderman will be shar-ing some of his repertoire with South Afri-can audiences in October.It has been 25 years

since the legendarymusi-cian has played in thecountry.Richard said he has

been contacted from timeto time in the past to per-form here but while heenjoys South Africa, hisschedule didn’t allow forshows. This time, pro-moter Louis van Wykcontacted him well in ad-vance and Richard saysit’s thanks to him thathe’ll be returning.At the age of just 12, the

world-famous performerwas accepted into theprestigious music col-lege, Conservatoire deParis.He was on his way to a promising career

as a classical pianist when his father fell ill,forcing him to take a job as a bank clerk andaccompanist to contemporary bands toshoulder the financial responsibilities.His big break came in 1976, when he beat

20 other pianists auditioning to play “Bal-lade pour Adeline”, a song written by Paulde Senneville.Back then though, Clayderman was still

performing under his real name, PhilippePagès. Together with Paul and producer,

Olivier Toussaint, Richard took on hisgrandmother’s surname, to avoid his namebeing mispronounced.“Ballade pour Adeline”, which Paul

wrote for his new daughter, went on to sell34 million copies in 38 countries.Since then, Clayderman has recorded

1300 melodies and hissoft touch and romanticstyle have earned himthe title, The Prince ofRomance, a nicknamegiven him by formerUnited States first ladyNancy Reagan.When asked what

School is where the heart is. Or so a bunchof grade 10 learners from Riverside Collegediscovered when they went to school lastweek, just to find out they would be dissect-ing sheep hearts in the life science class.

New life science teacher Flip Theunissenthought it was a good idea to let the learnersget hands-on experience.

“There is nothing more effective than afresh heart on a dissection tray for learnersto get their ‘hands dirty’ and engage withthe work they study in their life sciencetextbooks.

“During our dissection of the sheep’shearts I was filled with joy to see the grade10s totally focused on and actively partici-pating in the lesson. We had the opportunityto study the heart in great detail. The learn-ers gained valuable experience and ac-

quired a thorough understanding of how aheart actually functions. For the next dis-section, our grade 11s will take a close lookat the body’s ‘oil filter’ - the kidney,” saidTheunissen.

The learners enjoyed the lesson as muchas Theunissen enjoyed presenting it. AdamEdwards says being able to physically openand examine the heart made it easier to un-derstand. “It was an amazing learning expe-rience, wow!,” he exclaimed.

People who photograph a rare object or en-dangered species with their cellphonescould inadvertently assist criminals orpoachers.

“Geotagging”, a function on smartphones and tablets that adds geographicalinformation to the photographs and videosone takes, can be retrieved by criminalswhen viewing the footage on social web-sites.

“Geotagging lets viewers know where apicture was taken. While this is great for abeautiful view, it’s a risk for endangeredwildlife,” explains Ettienne JacquesKüyler, the biodiversity area coordinator ofthe Blaauwberg region.

Roy Fuller-Gee, chairperson of theFriends of the Blaauwberg ConservationArea, adds that this does not only apply toendangered animals, but any rare items.

“There are a number of critically endan-gered plants and medicinal plants in the re-serve. Geotagging can also lead someone

straight to historical or cultural artefacts.There has been theft of Battle of Blaauw-berg items from the battlefield before. Geo-tagging can even lead someone to a collec-tion of paintings in private homes and exhi-bition areas,” says Fuller-Gee.

Küyler elaborates on geotagging, sayingthat some technology automaticallyrecords the GPS location for every imageone takes. This information is written intothe picture’s metadata, so when one uploadsthe images to the web, the geographical co-ordinates are included as well.

“On smart phones the geotagging featureis automatically turned on, so you have toturn it off if you don’t want to reveal the lo-cation of all your pictures. On an iPhoneyou press ‘Settings’ and select ‘General’,then ‘Location Services’. Disable the appli-cations that make use of GPS information.On Blackberry, select the camera icon.Press ‘Menu’, followed by ‘Options’. Set thegeotagging option to ‘Disabled’ and save. OnAndroid activate the camera and press thesettings button. Turn off ‘Geotagging’ or‘Location Storage’.”

A local businessman is setting out ona music adventure, having just rele-ased his debut album, Verily, Verily.

Hyram Doolings, a Zevenwacht familyman, has roped in some of Cape Town’sfinest musicians to help on the gospel al-bum he launched in Kenridge this wee-kend.

“As a little boy I always wanted to sing,”Hyram says. His grandmother took him tochurch where she in-troduced him to thechoir master and itwas just a few monthsbefore he was singingsolo.

“The choir used tosit upstairs and the pe-ople used to turn theirbacks to see who thislittle boy singing is,”Hyram recalls.

Almost 50 yearsdown the line, Hy-ram’s desire to singturned into a “huge de-sire to write”, andthat’s how Verily, Veri-ly was born.

As a Capetonian, Hy-ram says he was al-ways fascinated byjazz, and he alwayswanted to sing a “jazzykind of gospel”.

While he hopes to spread the messageof God’s love, some of the songs are relatedto his own struggles, which brought himcloser to God.

As a child, Hyram was exposed to an al-coholic father and an abusive mother, andsinging was an escape for the young boywho once tried to commit suicide by jum-ping into a river.

He was saved by his uncle, but thatwasn’t the end of his near-death experien-ces. He got trapped in quicksand, nearlydrowned, and was hit by a car, which sawhim go through twelve operations and oc-cupational therapy to even out his mouth.

“Some of the songs are related to the suf-

fering of Jesus and I could somehow to re-late to that through my own suffering, butnothing compares to his suffering for me,”Hyram says.

While he points out that this theme isn’texplicitly laid out in the lyrics, it can befound in the “feeling of the music”.

Hyram’s grandmother used to oftenread the Bible to him and his siblings andthe albums’ name come from a scriptureshe was particularly fond of, John5:24:“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, excepta man be born of water and of the Spirit,

he cannot enter intothe kingdom of God.”

He says it was hisgrandmother’s rea-ding that eventuallyled to the album,which he has dedica-ted to her.

Hyram says he takeshis hat off to the peoplewho worked with himon Verily, Verily. “It’sguys that have reallybeen in the industryfor a long time.”

Camillo Lombard,Jonathan Rubain andDonveno Prins are justsome of the names inthe album sleeve.

It’s with the help ofhis family and theloyal people that sur-round him that Hyram

knows his business is in safe hands whilehe pursues his music career. He felt, con-sidering how tough the local music indus-try is, that he wanted to build a career andhave some money in the bank before ta-king on the music world.
