If crime in the community is getting youdown, the time has come to rise up andshowyour support for a safer community. On Saturday the community of Belhar is
calling on the community who wants to bepart of that change for safety to march withthem against the rising tide of crime in thecommunity. This is in response to recent activity in the
area that has turned some parts of the areainto a no-go zone.Sebastian Julie, one of the organisers of
the march on Saturday, pointed out howthings were becoming out of control, and we
should not let criminals take over the area.“Over a period of the last two weeks four
murders took place, there were three at-tempted murders, three business robberies, that included one at Shoprite where aboutR2 million was taken,” he said.“The worst part is that it seems that the
violence is not even close to coming to anend.“Wherever you go the people are scared,
afraid to walk in the streets, and it’s timethat we played a part in putting a stop to thisfear.”
MemoOnSaturday themarchwill be going to the
Airport Mall to hand over a memorandum
to the MEC, JP Smith and a representativeof the Office of the President and Ministerof Safety.“We want them to make a commitment
with time frames to the community of Bel-har and other communities affected bycrime,” said Julie. In neighbouring Clarke Estate in Elsies
River, residents are also unhappy about therising crime in their area, and will be join-ing the march to show their support.Ronnie van Sitters felt that too many peo-
ple liked to complain but did notwant to sup-port initiatives to fight crime in their com-munities.“Too many people want to use poverty as
an excuse for the crime,” he said.
“There was always poverty in this area, but we never used it as an excuse to condonecrime.“We used to be a community that cared for
each other, now you find the parents don’twant to see thewrong that their children aredoing.”Another resident, who did not want to be
named, pointed out that the drug lords andgangsters were causing major problems inthe area, and in some cases trying to paypeo-ple off to overlook their activities.“Poverty is the problem because people
are happy to get themoney to keep them fed,but what happens when the innocents startdying?”To page 2.

“The problem is also when you have peoplewho don’t want to be part of these payoffs, and they then become targets for these crim-inals in their community.“The time has come for us to tell the gov-

Social services in the area was given aboost whenWestern Cape Minister for So-cial Development Albert Fritz recentlyopened the new Social Development Dis-trict Office in Goodwood. This one-stop multi-functional office
will serve the greater Goodwood, Both-asig, Elsies River and Parow community.Situated on the corner of Goulburn and
Voortrekker Street it was opened onThursday 23 October and promises to beone of the most helpful community socialservice offices in the city.Fritz said the purpose of establishing
the office in Goodwood was to bring socialdevelopment and social workers closer tothe community, as many people have totravel great distances to get to an officefurther away.“Community members have to make
use of different means of transport to goto these centreswhilemost of them cannotafford the fees. “In turn, they end up with-out any assistance from their city,” Fritzsaid. He added that services will be readily
available for those in need. “We are focus-ing on child protection and vulnerablepeople.“Older persons and children who are in
need of foster care will be attended to,” he
said.Eudehard October, social work manag-
er for the city, confirmed that themost vul-nerable people will be on the priority list.“Abused women and children will be as-sessed and helped. We also focus on drugand substance abuse,” October said. The department will also conduct visits

KingdomDanceMinistries is flying high af-ter a new batch of students returned fromtheir exams in the USA.
In 1999Neil Oortman and hiswife, Philid-er, had a dream of teaching spiritual danceto youth and adults in their communitiesand that dream has now grown to interna-tional partnerships.
Neil explained that their group is nowpart of the The Eagles International Train-ing Institute in America that offers a one-year, accredited, in-depth training coursefor those who desire to soar to higherheights in the area of dance ministry.
“Our goal is to train and educate thosecalled to theministry of dance, then releasethem to be effective servants, teachers, andleaders,” he said.
“We are very proud of the achievementsof our students, who do their finals examsin America every year. Our latest group ofstudents have just returned and they did
very well once again.”While the couple are based in Belhar they
have taken their tuition to all areas whereit is needed.
They specialise in modern spiritualdance andhave performedwithmany of thetop local acts on the gospel scene.
In 2008 they completed their course at theEagle Institute and did so well that theywere asked to handle the institute’s activi-ties in South Africa.
“We were very proud to achieve this hon-our and it has inspired us to always teachour students to be the best,” added Philider.
“Our next coursewill be starting in Janu-ary next year and it is a five-module in-depth course in this type of dancing.”
This training course is open to everydance leader and dancers from all churchesand communities who want to equip them-selves withmore dance skills in the spiritu-al field.
Registration is already open for 2014.V For more information about the course contactthem on 084 863 9580 or 078 696 5790.

Some talents are taking to the streets of Bel-har for safer journeys, on the roads andtheir lives. On Saturday Safe Roads 4 Youth (SR4Y)
hosted an open mic session in Pentech, andthey’ve got another one planned for thisweek. While there was lots of fun as the talents
took to the stage this activity is part of athree-year research-action project thataims to contribute to prevent road trafficcrashes resulting from young people driv-ing (and walking) under the influence of al-cohol.“The project is being implemented in
three emerging countries, Argentina, Viet-nam and South Africa,” says PatrickMuchaka, programme manager of the Glo-bal Road Safety Partnership in South Afri-ca.“In South Africa, there are two sites
where the project is being implemented
namely, Kanyamazane (Mpumalanga) andhere in Belhar.
Collisions“The reason for this project is that motor
vehicle collisions are a serious publichealth problem around the world, resultingin over 1.3 million fatalities per year.“This is particularly problematic for
young adults who have a much higher riskof being involved in motor vehicle crashes. The SR4Y project is therefore meant to ad-dress this problem.”He also pointed out that while there is a
multitude of other problems that are facingcommunities, the project specifically ad-dresses alcohol because the harmful use ofalcohol is a very important determinant ofmotor vehicle collisions across the world.“While drunk driving is dangerous for all
age groups, the impact on young drivers iseven more severe than for older drivers.”
ResearchThis is a research-action project involv-
ing baseline surveys, implementation ofprojects/interventions designed by localcommunities and post-intervention sur-veys to evaluate the impacts of the interven-tions. “The research component of theproject is being conducted by researchersfrom Stellenbosch University,” addsMuchaka.“A baseline survey was conducted in 2012
and the post intervention survey will beconducted in late 2014-early 2015.“With regard to the interventions, the
event that we are hosting is but one compo-nent of the said interventions.“Other interventions have been imple-
mented already while others are beingplanned for 2014. In all cases, it is communi-ty members who develop the interventionsthat they think will help address the issueof drunken driving and drunkenwalking intheir respective communities.”The next event will be held on Saturday,
on the corner of Alabama Street and BelharDrive, starting at 11:00. Admission is freeand the community is invited.

It was a historical moment in Elsies Riveron Sunday when the Lexi Consani educarecentre celebrated their 50th anniversary. Many of their former creche learners
turned up to celebrate with the facility thatwas the foundation for their success in laterlife.Gilbert Thomas, who has a lifelong rela-
tionship with the facility pointed out in apresentation that in the early 1960s residentsofElsiesRiver saw theneed to establish sucha facility.“This request was made to the then Col-
oured Affairs Department for the acquisi-tion of land to build a creche,” he said. The government then paid a sum of R5 000
as a subsidy towards the cost of erecting acreche. Another prime motivator andfunder was Rotarian Gimmy Consani.“As Goodwood Town Council Mayor and
President of the Rotary Club he gave im-mense support to the establishment of thecreches.“His wife Lexi passed away in 1964, short-
ly after they opened in 1963.”He also pointed out that there were some
difficult years at the beginning with thecreche operating under extremely difficultcircumstances.
Support“We relied heavily on parent’s support
and several street collections and eventuallytwo members of the Rotary Club of Good-wood volunteered to serve on the committeeto help with administration.“During 1969 it became imperative that a
welfare organisation be registered to takeover the administration and that led to theestablishment of theElsies River SocialWel-fare Association which was officiallylaunched in September 1969.”He also pointed out that the facility still
plays an important role in the community, and that this celebration marked the startof another period of growth for them.“Our aim is still to provide holistic, physi-
cal, mental, emotional, moral and social de-velopment, care and protection to children,”he said.“We also want to support and enable fami-
lies to understand the development needs oftheir children; to ensure children are in asafe and caring learning environment.”In celebration of their 50th anniversary,
Lexi Consani Creche will be having a snackdance on Friday 8 November, at the Ruyter-wacht Communicare Centre. Music will beprovided by Super Star Sound Production, and tickets cost R80.From left, Gilbert Thomas, Anne Consani

I cannot believe that since thelaunch last weekend of theSpeed over Distance Camerasthere has already been a dropin fatalities on our roads, sincespeed has never been the causeof deaths on our roads. Speedcameras are the ultimatemoney-making rackets as theyare never put in a place wherethe fatality rate is high andmostly only at a ‘fishpond”where max funds are generat-ed.
If one drives past the firstcamera at 80km/h and thenaccelerates to 250kmh toapprox... 500m before the nextcamera and then stop, havelunch, coffee and have a shortrest and then proceed towardsthe next one you are a goodmotorist as the average speedon the measured distance willgive you a speed of maybe20km/h average. You mighthave obstructed other traffic ifyou were travelling all thetime but at least you are notspeeding.
These cameras are a waste ofmoney and if it is a highcollision frequency locationthan physical law enforcementshould be done.
Do our powers that be nothave anything better to spendtheir money on?

We so often refer to being assick as a dog, when we want toexpress ourselves to others. And so true, most of us havean understanding of what itmeans, you are really sick“vrot” and deserve medicine, medical assistance or even adoctor. But for the literallysick-as-a-dog, pet, there is justnot such an urgency to re-spond. I am heartbroken, thatrecently once again, I wasconfronted with a very youngsick dog, suffering because oflack of inoculations againstdeadly diseases. To see thathelpless animal in such a state,is so cruel that I want to appealto people to act responsibly, donot consider pets if you cannotafford food, health, time andlove. I have heard of so manyunwanted pets passed onbecause they have become a“nuisance” in your home.

@andrebakkes
Hundreds of years of false stereotypingandmisconceptions can be undone bya simple revelation – despite our dif-
ferences, we all desire peace. What was once animosity between a few
Jewish girls and their Arab peers has beentransformed into mutual understandingthanks to the Israel Centre of Cape Town(IC), Partnership2Gether and the Peres Cen-tre for Peace (PCP).Eight girls from the Middle East partici-
pated in the recent Rabin Memorial PeaceSoccer Tournament at Century City. Plentyof goals were scored, but the only one thatcounted was promoting peace.TygerBurger spoke to two teenagers who
grew up in the same vicinity west of Jerusa-lem, yet their culture and religion areworlds apart. Both were taught to hate the other, but
once they crossed the great divide they be-came good friends.Hatzav Nechushtan is 17 years old and
lives in a Jewish village called Giv’at Ye’ar-im.The 15-year-old Sandy Awad Allah lives
just 4 kmaway in aPalestinian village calledBait Naqquba.
StereotypeHatzav speaks almost perfect English
when she says: “Before the PCP we stereo-typed other religions. We don’t know them, yet we hate them for nothing. Now we canerase all the stereotypes and form new opin-ions of those who are just like us – our
friends.”With thehelp ofPCP’sDvirZivanwhoacts
as a translator, Sandy adds: “In the begin-ning we thought the Jewish girls wouldn’tlike us, but we were surprised. Now we arebest friends forever!”Hatzav continues: “People are people, no
matter where they come from, no matterwho they believe in.”Responding to the question whether the
conflict in theMiddle East could be resolvedif all concerned were to overcome their mis-conceptions, Dvir answers: “In every con-flict you get your side. You build your opin-ion there.“You can say a lot of things, but when you
see a face in front of you, you erase most of
these opinions. By speaking together andplaying together you cancel this out.”This is why soccer was chosen as one of
theways how these girls can get to know oneanother, as well as players from Langa, Her-zlia Middle School, St Cyprians and theGrassboots developmental team.Jewish people’s first language is Hebrew,
then English and a little Arabic, while thePalestinian first language is Arabic, thenHebrew and a little English.Israel’s “Co-existence Team” obviously
had difficulty communicating with one an-other and with the local players, but Dvirsays this wasn’t a problem.“We don’t really need to speak, because
sport is the international language!”
PeaceThe girls have often been asked: “How is
it to play with a Jewish girl, or how is it toplay with a Muslim?”According to Dvir they would answer:
“We don’t know what you want from us. It’snot we and they, it’s us.”The head of IC, Yaniv Nachmias, elabo-
rates: “It was a chance for us to bring thegroup here and show that Israel is for peace, and promotes co-existence and tolerance.Arabs, Muslims and Jews can eat and laughtogether, work together, train together andbe together.“These teenagers share the same prob-
lems of your average teenagers. They havea lot in common.”
The Coexistence Team from Israel’s Hatzav Nechushtan tries to get the ball from Leah Blumenthal from Cape Town’s Herzlia Middle School.

Nadat drie verskillendeplatemaatskappye in vierjaar hom genader het, het
Chris Chameleon uiteindelik ’ngeestelike album bekend gestel.
Kaartjies kos R130 en is by Computicket beskikbaar.
D.F. Malan speel in die halfeindronde
