Drug war, or a community fight-ing drugs?

That is the question facing inves-tigators after a house in Bonteheu-wel was petrol bombed on Saturdaynight, leading to three other housesbeing destroyed and leaving 30 peo-ple homeless.While initial reports indicatedthat the incident was related to aturf war over drugs, it is slowlyemerging that this could have beenthe action of a community tired ofthe destruction that drug abuse iscausing in neighbourhoods.

A pastor from Bonteheuwel, whodid not want to be named but alsohas a congregation in the Delft arearevealed that in recent monthsthere seems to have been an in-crease in drug dealers moving intoareas.He said that in his ministry al-most all the families have been af-fected by drugs.“It is sadwhenyouhear these sto-ries of how families have lost chil-dren to drugs,” he said.“In the areas where this incidenthappened, in Oleander andAlmondstreets, there have been stories ofhow these drug dealers have takenover the whole community, or are

attempting to.“The problem starts with thehigh unemployment and poverty inthe area, and these drug dealerscome into the area and start givingpeople money to keep quiet.“Problem is that theseneighbour-hood children get caught up inthese drug dens, which starts de-stroying their families as well.”One of his congregation, amotherof four who also did not want to benamed, agreed with the pastor say-ing that the public saw the police asbeing helpless in the situation, be-cause these dens just kept on going,even after raids on them.“People who have been affected

have been talking about doingsomething themselves for a longtime,” she said.“I don’t know who did this bomb-ingbut thenextmorning everybodywas talking about how they shouldhave done it a long time ago.“We are sad about the innocentpeople who have been hurt but wehave been concerned for our safetyfor a long time.“One of my children is dead be-cause of drugs, and another is des-tined to the same fate because of hisinvolvement with gangs, and thestory is the same with all of myneighbours.

cerned about drug dens in their neighbour-hoods, but when it is reported we have to in-vestigate it properly to be assured of a convic-tion.“There are other ways of showing their un-

happiness but it does not involve destructionthat could get them in prison.”In conclusion the pastor feels that it is time

that the government played a bigger part indestroying the drug culture on the Cape Flats,and across the country.“Politicians must stop playing with our

lives,” he said.“They must look into the real causes of the

problemwhich is the unemployment and lackof proper education for our children.“We must hold them responsible for what

happens in our country, and they must leadfrom the front by giving up their fancy suitsand cars, their palaces and perks.“They are responsible for our children’s fu-

City claims ‘malicious damage’

Police in Bishop Lavis are seriousabout activating the fight againstabuse of women and children.

This week they kicked off with an earlystart to the campaign for 16 Days of Activ-ism for No Violence Against Women andChildren which takes place every yearfrom 25 November.During this time, the South African

government runs a campaign to makepeople aware of the negative impact of vi-olence on women and children and to actagainst abuse.Last week police, led by station com-

mander Brig Christopher Jones, startedtheir own campaign leading up to this ini-tiative by visiting shebeens and tavernsin the area and surrounding communi-ties of Bonteheuwel, Montana, Charles-ville, Netreg, and Valhalla Park.During this operation they handed out

pamphlets to make it clear that the policewill not tolerate any crime against wom-en and children.“Most of our assaults and rape cases

happen when women visit abovemen-tioned places and thereforewe once againurge women and children to be aware oftheir safety,” said Jones.“Do not trust anybody who says he will

walk you home. Be aware of your drink,if you are not aware of your surroundingspeople will put ‘date rape’ drugs in yourdrink.“You can’t smell or taste it, and youwill

just wake up somewherewhere you couldhave been abused or robbed. Make sureyour drink is unopened when you re-ceived it, if you dance or go to toilet aska friend to look after your drink, or ratherbuy a new drink.”When it comes to younger members of

the community Jones wants to discour-age the abuse of alcohol.“We should be discouraging youth and

minors from drinking alcohol,” he said.“They should be part of a community

that does not support illegal liquor out-lets.”The police also want youth and chil-

dren to be aware of their rights when itcomes to any form of abuse.“Do not allow anyone to touch you in

a way that makes you feel uncomforta-ble,” says Jones.“Be firm and clear and say No! when

this happens to you and also be careful tonot leave a party or social event withsomeone you do not know or have justmet.“Ask friends for help if someone ig-

nores you when you say no. Remember,most rape victims know the rapist.”Members of the police also spoke to

men in the community about their re-sponsibility against abusing their fami-lies and the need for them to care for theirfamilies.“Fathers must be positive role models

to their children, especially their sonswho they must love, show them care, andrespect towards women and girls,” con-tinued Jones.

“Die grootste sindikaat se grootkop sit inLuanda in Angola, vanwaar die honde ge-koop word vir enigiets tussen R100 en R500per hond,” sê Mariette Hopley, bestuurdervan die nasionale dierewelsyn se taakspan.

Volgens Hopley is daar in November reeds17 honde by die Kaapstad InternasionaleLughawe gered op pad Angola toe. In Okto-ber is ’n besending van 26 honde van dieself-de onheil gered.

“Die sindikaat in Angola is meestal opsoek na groter honde soos Rotweilers, Hus-kies en boerboele, maar pitboel-terriërs enstaffies is ook in aanvraag,” sê Hopley.

Volgens haar word die honde gebruik virhondegevegte, waarop daar soveel as R1 mil-joen op ’n slag op ’n hond gewed word.

“Dis groot geld en die honde oorleef net so-wat drie gevegte voorhulle sterf,wat die aan-vraag groot maak,” sê sy. Die sindikate werfmense in die groot stede om die honde testeel. “Diemensekryofhul inligtingvanvee-artse of ry in woonbuurte rond op die uitkykvir honde. Met die hulp van die veeartse watkop in een mus is, word die honde dan opge-spoor en verdoof met enige medikasie waar-op die dief sy hande kan lê.” sê sy. VolgensHopley wordminstens drie veeartse tans on-dersoek.

“Die diewe is opportunisties. As hulle ’nmooi en opregte hond sien, sal hulle van diegeleentheid gebruik maak om terug te gaanom die hond te probeer steel met die doel omhom te verkoop,” sê hy.

An exciting art exhibition is coming toElsies River.

This weekend five artists will be hostingan art exhibition at the Multi-Purpose Hallin Halt Road on Friday and Saturday.Grant Juriuswill be showingmixedmedia

painting and drawing; Petricia Muller, tex-tile installation; Love SB is a graffiti artist;Patricia Jurius, mixed media installation,and Scott Eric Williams will be showing hisphotography and painting.One of the artists Grant Jurius, pointed

out that the exhibition comprises artworkmade from various media including paint-ing, drawing, and sculpting.“This is an exciting event for the area be-

cause all the artists have some connectionwithElsiesRiver and surrounding,” he says.“In this exhibitions these artists express

their hopes, dreams, fears, or just pure ex-pression and seek to interpret their experi-ence of ‘Elsies’.”“There is a history in Elsies River that is

not academically explored but ratherthrough the experience andknowledge of theartists themselves. We want to inspire, andmaybe encourage other young talents tostart exploring their creativity.”The exhibitions starts at 18:00 on Friday

Police want you to keep a close eye forcrooks in your community.Bishop Lavis police has experienced an

increase in burglaries, especially in Mon-tana and Charlesville areas.Communications officer at the station,

CaptMarieLouw, pointed out that these in-cidents happen early in the morning fromabout 07:00.“Themodus operandi is that the suspects

remove or open the sliding doors of hous-es,” she said.“We want to warn the community to be

careful. Your chances of being a victim ofsome type of crime in your lifetime are in-

creasing.“The public must become the eyes and

ears for community safety and they are en-couraged to report suspicious activities.”Police are advising that residents

should:. Install the best security you can afford,

for example to put burglar bars/doors atsliding doors and small windows such asbathroom and toilet windows, the securitygates at outside doors. Keep these gateslocked.

. A watchdog is a good early warningsystem. Keep it visible as a deterrent butbeyond the reach of strangers. The unex-plainable death of a watchdog is a warningsign of a possible burglary.

Die eienaars is natuurlik mal oor hul ouli-ke “leeu-honde”. Dit was net die oningeligteswat kort-kortmini-hartaanvalle gekryhet ashulle ’n diep grom of ’n blaf hoor.

Boerboele is nie net groot,sterk honde nie – hulle is massie-we gespierde waghonde met sag-te harte (wat blykbaar êrensweggesteek is agter hul tande).

Die Westelike Provinsie seboerboelklub (WPBK) hou tweekeer elke jaar ’n kompetisie omdie beste boerboel in elke klasaan te wys.

Beoordeelde klasse sluit in ou-er as sewe jaar, 18 tot 24 maande,12 tot18 maande en 9 tot 12 maan-de.

Daar was selfs ’n klas vir viertot ses maande jonge hondjies...en selfs húlle het skerp tande!

Dit was ’n moeilike taak virdie ervare beoordelaar, Jan vanRisjwijk, om net een wenner inelke klas aan te wys.

Selfs die honde se karakter isgetoets. Daar was dus geen plekvir monsters wat agter hul“boerboel-stamboek” kon skuilnie.

Een van die komiteelede vanWPBK, André Bosman, sê: “Onshet al die skool vantevore ge-bruik, want dis lekker sentraalgeleë endaar is baiemense in diearea wat boerboele besit.”

Hyhet boerboele ookverdedig, omdat daarbaie negatiewe dinge gesê word oor hierdielojale honde.

“Die boerboele wat gewoonlik betrokke isin gru-insidente is nie opreg nie. Daar is ookgevalle waar mense doelbewus kwaai hondeteel, maar almal hier is rustig en ons toetsjuis hul karakter.”

Suid-Afrikahetweggestapmet 29medaljes(12 goud, 12 silwer en 5 brons), sowel as 3 wê-reldrekords.

Lande van regoor die wêreld het hulle ak-kuraatheid ten toon kom stel.

Suid-Afrika het weer bewys dat hy ’n leieris in hierdie spesifieke boogskiet-dissipline.
