Let’s Go Back to the Text
Read Aloud
pg. 25-26
Take a Stance
Make a claim - Which character is the sympathetic character?
Identify a quote in the text that supports your claim (cite with page #).
Sketch the scene from which your quote was taken or draw a symbol that represents that moment in the story.
It is sometimes hard to talk about cultural behaviors and differences without falling into stereotyping and “us” vs. “them.” While Two Kinds does explore the “character type” of the demanding Chinese mother, it does so through a very personalized story that explores truths found in all parent-child dynamics.

Small Group Discussion (3-4 People)
Do parents’ high expectations encourage children to be their best or discourage them by setting them up to fail? Explain. Use examples from your life or the story.
As a group, find a direct quote from the story that supports this idea. Each group member should write down the quote and take notes as group members share ideas.
