WORKING WITH YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

WELCOME to another Twin Falls School District Board of Trustees Meeting. You are encouraged to attend all regular board meetings.

We are proud of our school system and the board members are dedicated to the continued improvement of the Twin Falls Schools.

We understand that from time to time patrons of school districts have concerns and feel a need to bring those concerns to the attention of the school or teachers. In order to maintain continuity and best resolve these concerns, we recommend to our patrons the following procedures:

1. The first and most effective step is to take the concern to the staff member who is closest to the problem. (In many cases this will be the teacher, coach, etc.) We have found that most problems are resolved at this level.

2. If there is still a concern on the matter, we then recommend that the concern be brought to the attention of the Principal. We have found that unresolved concerns from item #1 are usually resolved satisfactorily by the building administrator.

3. If the concern is not satisfactorily resolved at that level, then the concern should be taken to the Director of Elementary Programs or Director of Secondary Programs.

4. If the concern is not satisfactorily resolved at that level, then the concern should be taken to the Superintendent of Schools. Difficult concerns can usually be resolved.

5. However, ifthe patron still feels the concern has not been properly resolved he/she may use the right of appeal to the Board of Trustees. This is done by calling or writing to the Superintendent and asking for the item to be placed on the agenda of the next regularly scheduled board meeting.

6. If you desire to address the board, we would like you to be as comfortable as possible. As a board we hold public meetings which are not publfo forums and therefore have rules which are necessary for the benefit of all. The following guidelines will assist you as you present your information to the board.

A. Prepare your thoughts ahead of time. Usually a briefwritten outline handed to each board member helps the board follow your presentation. This outline would also give them something upon which to make notes as you speak.

B. If a group is involved, select one individual to be your spokesperson. He/she can then guide the presentation with the board and help the board chairman in directing questions to the group.

C. Plan your presentation to be as brief as possible. This should include a question/answer period. If more time is needed it is best to give a complete written presentation to the board for their future study. If you give more than five to six minutes of testimony, time restraints will make it difficult for the board to respond that same evening.

D. Usually the board will direct the administration to help resolve the concerns and ask for a report back to the board at a later date. However, please remember a solution may take time to be resolved.

We are eager to have our patrons and school staff working together for the improvement of education in the Twin Falls Schools.

I am writing this letter to request your consideration and approval of our recommendation to adopt the Bridges Math curriculum by The Math Learning Center for grades K-5. We have worked diligently throughout the 16-17 school year with a math pilot. We had 21 teachers pilot Eureka and 21 teachers pilot Bridges. We have had several work days throughout the year, where pilot teachers were able to share information, both successes and challenges with teachers piloting the other program. We have had reps from each program present to the full group as well. Rhonda Birnie has been utilized as our facilitator throughout the pilot process. We had a work day with all pilot teachers, instructional coaches and principals on Monday, April 13. On this day, Rhonda had the group review the pilot teacher surveys from both December and February. Each group developed timelines of what would need to occur for implementation of the programs they piloted for fall 2017.

Some of the highlights for Bridges are: • All grade levels are aligned to the CCSS according to Ed Reports Research. • Bridges provides teacher materials that support implementation for teachers, both in print and

digitally. • Bridges has an intervention program that is connected to the core program. • Bridges will provide initial training during our summer institute days as part of the purchase. • Bridges is rigorous and will help students gain the fundamental skills needed to be successful as

they move on to middle school and into upper division math concepts.

At the end of the day, we gained 100% consensus that all members of the group would support the decision of the group. A vote was then taken and 70% of the group voted to recommend Bridges as our new math curriculum. I am proud of the work our pilot teachers, instructional coaches and principals have put into the pilot process. We all took this task very seriously and feel confident that Bridges will be beneficial to Twin Falls School District students.

Twin Falls School Board,

I am writing this letter to request your consideration and approval of our recommendation to adopt the Ready Math curriculum by Curriculum Associates for grades 6111 through 8111 • [have worked closely with the middle school math teachers to review and pilot Ready Math and Connected Math (CMP3). We met

on several occasions to discuss the positive and negative aspects of the two programs. We also met with representatives from the publishers three times to ask questions and receive training. Fourteen teachers

piloted the two programs. We met on March 301h and gave each publisher 2 hours and one last chance to

sell their program , to answer questions, and present any additional information. At the end of the day, we

had a lengthy discussion regarding the pros and cons of each program. However, I wanted to get each

teacher's individual input without feeling pressure from the group. I asked the teachers to email me with

their selection and describe their reasoning for their selection. The following are a few of their comments:

• The Ready Math curriculum has above a 95% alignment with the Idaho Core Standards.

• There are options for ELL as well as advanced students.

• In all , the Ready Math program and iReady online program has a great potential to reach students of all abilities.

• I feel like we would get the training and support needed to implement a new curriculum.

• It provides rigor for students, it is aligned with our standards, and provides diagnostic testing and

useful data to help our students . Title Math teachers have expressed that they see better

improvements with their students who use Ready Math compared to those who have used

Connected Math.

After tallying the votes, all but one teacher voted to go with Ready Math and 100% of the teachers are

fully committed to support the recommendation. I am extremely impressed with the professionalism and

dedication of our middle school math teachers as we worked through this lengthy process. They are an

amazing asset to the Twin Falls School District.

Grade Level Facilitators - a teacher leader from each grade level met monthly with Mr. Vogt and with

their grade level teams. The focus was to address building goals: Advisory and communication.

Promote Positive Testing - strategies to create a positive atmosphere regarding ISATs and SATs. Staff

wore spirit shirts on testing days, "Why the ISA T Matters" posters placed in classrooms and

hallways, pep talks given by the staff.

Tech Survey - feedback given to develop a plan to address hardware replacement

"SMART TUESDAYS" - Students Magnifying Achievement and Responsibility Together

This was proposed by the students and supported by the staff; they asked for a positive incentive to

reward student effort. Students that are proficient in all classes earn a longer lunch on Tuesdays.

Student who are not proficient attend Advisory working on those classes. In discussions with the

Building Leadership, students are showing more concern completing work. We also credit the

decrease in Failing grades to SMART Tuesdays.

LB. Perrine will close the proficiency gap by 75% in kindergarten, by 55% in grade 1 and by 44% in grade 2, as measured by comparing the percent proficient on the Fall 2016 Idaho Reading Indicator (IRI) assessment and the percent proficient on the Spring 2017 IRI assessment.

Grade 3 - Grade 5 ISAT-Math LB. Perrine increase the number of students scoring proficient 25% in grade three (from 61 % to 86%), 52% in grade four (from 9% to 61 %) and 42% in grade five (from 11 % to 53%), as measured by comparing the August MComp assessment scores to the March MComp assessment scores.

4. Instructional Focus/Priorities: The instructional focus/priority for this year are improving reading interventions through the use of targeted diagnostics and small-group instruction; and increasing teacher effectiveness in math instruction. We increased intervention services during the school day and after school. We are working with math instruction specialist Rhonda Birnie to provide teachers professional development in the context of their classrooms and their curriculum. The focus is on deep conceptual understanding of the mathematics and strategies for helping students achieve deep understandings.

5. School Improvement Initiatives: Continued development of school culture and leadership through The Leader in Me. Our focus this year is on students learning the 7 Habits principles and language and on developing student leadership in the classroom. Observations and survey feedback indicate that students are becoming familiar with the habits and are beginning to recognize them in the actions and reactions of others as well as in their own choices and actions.

• Use of computer programs such as Imagine Leaming, Prodigy, Think Through Math and iStation

#1. The spring 2017 goal for all K-3 grades is at least 85% of students scoring at benchmark proficiency on IRImeasured skills.

• Based on fall 2016 benchmark testing, 3 7% of kindergarten students scored at benchmark proficiency on letter sound fluency.

• Based on fall 2016 benchmark testing, 3 7% of first grade students scored benchmark proficiency on reading CBM.
