St. Charles Borromeo Church October 5, 2014

Hello, October! The days are shorter,

the evenings are longer, and the weather is

cooler. Lots of great Saints Days this month:

Oct 1, Therese, the Little Flower; Oct 2,

Guardian Angels; Oct 4, Francis of Assisi; Oct 7, Our Lady of

the Rosary (why not come to the Rosary Vigil on Monday,

October 6. at 7:00pm?); Oct 15, Teresa of Avila; Oct 18, Luke;

Oct 20, Margaret Mary; Oct 28, Jude; and the Eve of All Saints,

Oct 31, Halloween!

At the direction of Bishop Lennon, all active priests of the

Diocese are to meet in convocation from noon on Tuesday,

October 7 until noon on Friday, October 10. This Cleveland

“priest and bishop” convocation is held every other year. This

will require some adjustments to this week’s liturgy schedule.

Father Larry Bayer, a retired priest of our Diocese, has kindly

agreed to celebrate the 8:30am Mass on Tuesday, Wednesday,

Thursday and Friday of this week. Our faithful weekend

associate, Father Anselm, tells me that he will celebrate the

7:00pm Mass on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I could not

find a priest-celebrant for the 7:00am Mass on Wednesday,

Thursday, or Friday of this week. So there will be no 7:00am

Mass on those three days. The topic of this year’s convocation is

“preaching the homily.” Please pray for your priests as we

spend time this week in prayer and study.

UPDATE: St Charles parishioners were particularly

generous in August, donating more than $16,000 to equip the

long-unused rectory for use as a convent at St Adalbert Parish,

East 83rd and Quincy Avenue. The Evangelizing Sisters of

Mary, an African order of nuns, took up residence there on the

first of September. The St Charles “Sisters’ Shower” Committee

(Brenda, Jackie, Jan, and Kim) attended the welcoming Mass for

the Sisters at St Adalbert on September 21. As the name of their

order implies, the Sisters focus on the basic work of bringing new

converts to the Church. Their pastor, Father Chmura, informs

me that the Sisters have already introduced three families to the

Catholic faith at St Adalbert.

If you have recently lost a spouse or another loved one, plan

on attending our next “Not Alone” series, scheduled to begin this

Tuesday, October 7, at 6:30pm in the Activities Center. Not

Alone will then continue for another five Tuesdays until

November 11. Each evening’s presentation lasts about ninety

minutes and each evening deals with various aspects of grief,

loss, and the realities of a new life. Not Alone has been a

blessing for hundreds of St Charles parishioners. Let us know

you will attend by calling Mark (440-888-2720); Mary (440-884-

0977); Terri (440-884-7425); or Sophie (440-884-4279).

St Charles Parish Pastoral Council members are

reminded of our monthly meeting this Thursday, October 9, at

7:45pm in the John Paul II Room (second floor) of the Parish

Activities Center.

Parish Council members are also reminded of the

Installation Ceremony scheduled for next Sunday, October 12,

at the 10:30am Mass in the church. Our Council guidelines call

for a public ceremony, on an annual basis, to begin each council

year. Council members, please “check in” at the Priests’

Sacristy next week before the 10:30am Mass.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

Do you know someone who has needed to receive a blood

transfusion or platelets? Chances are you have. That was only

made possible through the generosity of those who have donated

blood. Modern medicine cannot replicate this life-sustaining gift.

Saint Charles Borromeo Student Council is hosting a blood drive

this Monday, October 6th from 2:00-7:00pm in the Corrigan gym.

Your donation will save three lives. Consider giving the gift of life

to others. Walk-ins and first time donors are welcome. If you are

able, schedule your time by going to www.redcrossblood.org and

enter sponsor code StCharles. Our goal is 50pints. Donation takes

about one hour.

BLANKET SUNDAY

“COVERS” MANY NEEDS Next weekend is Blanket Sunday, sponsored by the Diocesan

St. Vincent de Paul Society. When you come to Mass, simply

make a cash donation (the SVdP Blanket Sunday envelopes may

be found in the church lobby kiosks or the Parish Office).

Your money will go further through bulk purchases of blankets

and other items for families, children, the elderly, homeless, and

other needy individuals in our own metropolitan area.
