A Word About Emergency PreparednessSeptember is Emergency Preparedness Month!

Holy Family is indeed a family. We care for each other and reach out to the members of our family and all others we can help. Part of our approach has been developing an emergency preparedness guide for natural disasters such as earthquakes, fi res and other disasters.

Our guide – The Personal Emergency Preparedness Guide For You and Your Family is available on our website at http://holyfamily.org/emer-gency-preparedness/. We urge you to review our guide and implement its suggestions for your home.

Remember, we are told, that it is only a matter of time before we have another very large earthquake, so it is imperative that we all do every-thing we can to be prepared.

WORSHIP / THE GOOD W

ORD

Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, "God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you." He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will fi nd it. What profi t would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father's glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct." Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Religious Education Religious education is a lifelong process that guides the baptized into “intimacy with Jesus Christ” (Catechesi Tradendae). Religious education is more than formal instruction; it is a conscious pathway to the development of the whole person as a model of Christ and permeates all facets of life in a Catholic community. Its foundations are laid in the home and built in partnership within the parish community.Th e ministry of Religious Education is an entrusted participant in this collaboration, serving the mission and expressing the love of Christ to our parish children! It is the goal of our parish, directors in formation, catechists and volunteers to work diligently with parents to encourage, support, strengthen and enhance their work in the formation of their children for the Kingdom of God. For more information contact Colette Villegas, DRE at 626.403.6118. For regular updates see our website: re.holyfamily.org. 6

Holy Family School HighlightsDear Parish Community,Holy Family School wishes to extend its gratitude to our parishioners for the tremendoussupport provided at last May’s Auction event. As many of you know, the “paddle raise” atthe event garnered $40,000 towards improvements in our Education Center. I am happyto let you know that we have put those funds to good use, and that our children in theschool and parish will be the benefi ciaries. Specifi cally, we have been able to install newfl ooring and paint classrooms, which has given our space a new and revitalized look. Wehave also been able to upgrade our technology with new Promethean ActivePanels; thesenew active panels allow teachers and students to interact and share digital content in newand exciting ways.Once again, on behalf of all the ministries who use our Education Center space, weextend our sincere thanks! In Christ,Frank Montejano

Men’s Reading GroupTuesday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Room. At our next meeting, we will be discussing: The Wisdom Jesus: Transforming Heart and Mind – a New Perspective on Christ and His Message, by Cynthia Bourgeault. If you put aside what you think you know about Jesus and approach the Gospels as though for the fi rst time, something remarkable happens: Jesus emerges as a teacher of the transformation of consciousness. Cynthia Bourgeault is a masterful guide to Jesus's vision and to the traditional contemplative practices you can use to experience the heart of his teachings for yourself.

Women’s Reading GroupTuesday, September 5, 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Rm. Even if you haven’t read the book, join us for wine, snacks, and lively exchange on Brooks' The Road to Character. Kindred SpiritsParish life can be strongly marriage and family oriented with few opportunities for single adults to feel comfortable at social gatherings or in volunteer capacities. Kindred Spirits was formed to create comfortable ways for single adults over 40 to get to know each other, and to build supportive friendships that enhance their participation in parish life as well as create meaningful connections in their lives outside of church. Truly great friendships have evolved through sharing in social events, volunteer projects, and spiritual enrichment activities together. We attend the Saturday vigil Mass each fi rst Saturday, followed by going to a diff erent local restaurant. Other potential activities are discussed and plans made during these fi rst Saturday gatherings. If you would like additional information, please email [email protected].

Did you know? Bullying and back to schoolUnfortunately, confl ict and even bullying seem to be a widespread experience in our country’s schools. Children may fall victim to, or perpetuate, intimidation and teasing, sometimes with lasting consequences to themselves and/or others. As children head back to school, it is important to talk to them about how they treat others and how to handle confl ict or bullying in their classrooms and on the playgrounds. Get involved in your child’s school and ask about plans or programs for bullying prevention. To request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Understanding School Violence, Part 2” email [email protected] or call 213.637.7227.

Bereavement Ministry

Invites you to

“In Remembrance of …”In Remembrance of... serves the needs of those who have experienced the

death of a loved one. By the grace of God and the gifts of the Holy Spirit,we offer prayerful solace, comfort and hope to members of our Catholic

Community who are mourning; and offer them a safe group environment to share and move through the grieving process. The group will meet once a week for eightweeks. Each meeting is 1 1/2 hours. This ministry desires to help mourners

understand the stages of grief and, through the grief sessions, encourage the bereaved to talk about what they are experiencing and to work through theirpain in a prayerful Catholic context. It is available for parishioners,

as well as those outside of the Holy Family Community, to continue their faith journey working through the mysteries of death.

Our next 8-week session begin Thursday, September 7th at 6:30 pm in the Pastoral Center Galilee Room
