Anointing of the Sick is the sacrament that is received by those who are ill or suffering. By the sacred anointing and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are sick to Christ. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit’s gifts of strength, faith, peace, and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ for the building up of the Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church, nos. 1520-23).

Many of us remember this sacrament as the Sacrament of the Last Rites, but as one of the sacraments of healing it can and should be celebrated whenever someone is seriously ill, facing a serious surgery, or experiencing debilitating effects of aging.

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is both “a liturgical and a communal celebration.” In the family home, hospital, or church, members of the Body of Christ gather for the sacramental rite led by a priest.

American Martyrs is planning a Communal Celebration of Anointing of the Sick, at which persons who wish to receive this sacrament will be invited to step forward during the liturgy to receive the Sacrament.

Communal Celebration of Anointing of the Sick Saturday, September 5 at 5:00pM Mass

Sunday, September 6 at the 11:30aM Mass This sacramental celebration is a “source of strength amid pain and weakness, hope amid despair” and a “joyful encounter” for the entire community (Pope John Paul, II, Christifideles Laici, no. 54).

Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodWhile our first and second readings this week have abundant references to food and drink, they are really about something much deeper - wisdom. There are generally three steps in the process of achieving wisdom. First there is knowledge: gaining information about something. Then there is comprehension: a deeper understanding of what the knowledge means. Wisdom is the final stage and is more than just knowing and understanding: it is seeing how knowledge and comprehension work in our life. Our first reading is from the Book of Proverbs. Proverbs deals with values, moral behavior, the meaning of life, and correct conduct. The underlying premise of the Book is that recognizing the authority, the control and the wisdom of God takes precedent over everything else. This is, of course, at the heart of stewardship; growing closer to God and making God the center of our lives. In our second reading Paul makes reference to drinking and eating too but he advises us, just as in Proverbs, to choose carefully what we consume and what path we follow in our lives. Paul tells us to be “filled with the spirit,” and then he completes the concept of stewardship when he states, “…giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.” It is this sense of gratitude that all comes from the Lord which fulfills our lives as good stewards. All that we do is to be done in a spirit of thanksgiving. Being filled with the Spirit is more important than being filled with food and drink.Today’s Gospel from John Chapter 6 is a continuation of the Bread of Life discourse from which our recent Gospels have been taken. Early in this Chapter the people address Jesus as “Rabbi" which we know comes from the

Hebrew word for teacher. Jesus is the Teacher. Jesus provides the Word and the wisdom of the Word. His statements on the Bread of Life are meant to reveal to us the wisdom of taking Jesus as our Savior, of uniting with Him through the Eucharist,

and using our gifts to further the earthly kingdom on His behalf. The Spiritual Bread offered to us by Jesus is the way to move closer to God.

Please contact us, S t e w a r d s h i p @ A m e r i c a n M a r t y r s . o r g with questions or comments on this article or about Stewardship.

stephen ministry Wanna Get Away? August is a popular month for vacations – some people take elaborate cruises, some settle in to relaxing resorts and others go all-out tourist, finding a landmark-filled destination with sights to see and places to be. And the one thing all these vacations share – they let you get away. But get away from what? Sure, everyone needs to recharge their batteries. But others just wish they could get away from family struggles, illness or uncertain financial futures. And no matter where you go, you can’t always “get away”.If you are facing one of life’s challenges, please call the Stephen Ministry. Members of your parish have received extensive training to become Stephen Ministers, who will provide you with confidential, Christian care. For more information, call us at 310-545-8244.

World Meeting of Families -2015 Philadelphia

"The family which experiences the joy of faith communicates it naturally. That family is the salt

of the earth and the light of the world; it is the leaven of society.”

- Pope Francis, October 27, 2013

Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully AliveIMPORTANT THEMES OF THE PREPARATORY CATECHESIS:

1. Created for Joy – We are more than an accident of evolution. We are greater than the sum of our biology. God exists. He is good. He loves us. He made us in his image to share in his joy. He takes an active hand in our lives. He sent his only Son to restore our dignity and lead us home to him.

2. The Mission of Love – God works through us. We have a mission. We are in the world for a purpose – to receive God’s love and to show God’s love to others. God seeks to heal a broken universe. He asks us to be his witnesses and helpers in that work.

Over the next few weeks, the remaining eight of the ten themes will be described in this portion of the Bulletin. For more information about the World Meeting of Families and to download a copy of the complete Catechesis, go to w w w. w o r l d m e e t i n g 2 0 1 5 . o r g

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Pool safety is about more than swimming Swimming is a good way to have some fun and beat the heat during the summer. Parents should teach their children about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfortable situations. Although you may be watching closely to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t forget about when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the restroom or out of sight.Teach your children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. For more information and a copy of the article called “Know the Rules…Summer Safety Tips to Teach Children” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, email: j v i e n n a @ l a - a r c h d i o c e s e . o r g

Parish  Poll  for  Mass  Times

In  evaluating  our  parish  liturgies,  the  Liturgy  and  Worship  Commission  discussed  the  following  questions:  • Is  there  sufficient  time  between  Masses?  • Are  Mass  times  convenient  for  members  of  the  parish?

We  have  found  that  there  may  need  to  be  additional  time  between  some  of  our  Sunday  liturgies,  i.e.  between  the  7am  and  8am  Masses  and  between  the  8am  and  9:30am  Masses.

Please  give  us  your  opinion  on  changing  the  following  Mass  times:

Change  7am  to  6:30am          YES     NO

Change  9:30am  to  9:45am          YES     NO
