COMMUNAL CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

St. Margaret Mary Parish Monday, December 16, 2019

7:00 PM Christian faith insists that God’s love for us is boundless. This is the point of Jesus’ story of a shepherd in search of a lost sheep. This is also the message that St. Margaret Mary received from the Heart of Jesus. And when our thoughts and actions are less than lovable, God seeks us out to prove that we are loved and to guide us in the ways of love. You are invited to a communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, in which you can rely, with confidence, on God’s mercy. Approximately one hour, this service will include an examination of conscience, the opportunity for private confession, and a ritual in front of St. Margaret Mary’s shrine. Please join the parish community for this Advent prayer and immerse yourself in the love of the Heart of Jesus.

Some members of our parish are going though difficult economic times because of layoffs and other financial crisis. As a parish with a heart we have always reached out to help people in need. This year we are asking parishioners to also help members of our parish family who need help.

If you know of a parish family that could use financial help this Christmas season please call Tom Cordaro at 630-369-0777.

If you would like to help parish families in need please send $40 gift certificates from Walmart, Target, Jewel, Meier’s, Mariano’s, Sears, Kohl’s and Penney’s to “Parishioners Helping Parishioners”, St. Margaret Mary Parish, 1450 Green Trails Dr, Naperville, IL 60540, or drop them off at the parish office 9:00 am—5:00 pm (Mon.—Fri.)

Dear Friend of All Saints Catholic Academy,

As you may be aware, Mrs. Melissa Santos, Principal of All Saints Catholic Academy, has prayerfully discerned to resign from her position effective July 1, 2020. Mrs. Santos has been a true blessing to our school. Please join me in wishing Melissa, her son Drew, and her husband Andy, many blessings as the Santos family reunites in Nebraska at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 school year.

As members of a parish that sponsors or supports All Saints Catholic Academy, you are an important part of the All Saints learning community, and your input is critical to our search for a new principal. If you would like to offer your thoughts about the next leader of All Saints, please go to the link below to access a bilingual All Saints Catholic Academy Principal Search Survey. Complete this online instrument as soon as possible, and encourage any other adults who support the pursuit of Catholic education to do so as well. The survey will be accessible from through midnight on Friday, January 10, 2020.

Please go to the following link to access the survey:

https://es.surveymonkey.com/r/2019-20ASCA

Survey data will create a Principal Profile that will guide Search Committee members in selecting candidates for interview who meet or exceed community expectations. This information will also assist members of the Search Committee as they design first and second-round candidate interview protocols that are derived from collected data.

Giving thanks to God for all the blessings that He has bestowed upon our community, I ask that you keep the success of our search for the next All Saints Catholic Academy spiritual and instructional leader in your prayers. Rest assured that you and your family are in my prayers.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. John Belmonte, S.J., Ph.D.

Jesse Tree Project What is a Jesse Tree? Ask our 4th grade Faith Formation students. They did a marvelous job creating Jesse trees, and presenting them to Faith Formation classes via beautiful Advent services. Jesse trees are an Advent tradition dating back to Medieval times. The inspiration originated from a scripture passage from the book of Isaiah:

"And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots."

The tree depicts symbols representing the ancestors of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph’s family, dating before King David whose relative was Jesse. You can enjoy observing these trees in the lower level atrium throughout Advent. What a nice gift for Jesus, 4th graders!!!

Fr. Paul’s Homily

Hope and Our Stewardship Mal 3:19-20a 2 Thes 3:7-12; Lk 21:5-19

(We are the trusted stewards, referred to in various parables, to whom God has entrusted his wealth, and he expects us to share it with those in need.)

Today’s gospel reading is a pretty fair description of the mindset in the early Church, the mindset of the first Christians and Jesus himself. On the one hand, things look dire; on the other hand, not to worry, be sober, serene, peaceful, and all shall be well. Holding these two opposites together was one of the first challenges that Jesus handed to his followers. What is being described here is the virtue of hope, which St. Paul calls “the first fruit given to those who believe.”

Now hope along with faith and love are the three essential qualities of God that we share in and through Christ. Of the three, we speak least about hope. We talk all the time about faith. We talk all the time about love. We don’t talk enough about hope. But our world needs hope now perhaps more than ever. Why would a 16-year-old go on a murderous, suicidal rampage on his birthday? Certainly psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, and his own peers will all contribute their own

opinions. But what may go overlooked is the most basic fact: he had no hope! People with hope do not behave that way. But we need hope to keep going amid all the fears and frustrations of life, or we just give up. And this has always been true, but now in our society the sense of the sacred, the sense of the transcendent from where hope comes is increasingly being pushed out of society, creating an enormous vacuum.

The eruptions of senseless violence are important wake-up calls for the whole of society. Many, especially the young, are dying inside. Every act of berserk violence is preceded by an inside death, the death of someone in his or her own heart. And the rest of us have to wake up and see those around us who are suffering, because we really do have the remedy: faith in the God who has come to us in our very flesh to bear our lives and burdens with us. That is our faith in Christ. God brings us not only hope for the age to come,

which is very important, but even in the present moment the fullness of love and compassion. That we do not have to wait for. That we do not have to hope for. It’s being given always.

Every time we gather for the Eucharist, God is renewing for us the covenant in Christ’s blood. Every time we come to the altar to receive the body and blood of Christ, God is feeding us, strengthening us for this treacherous journey through life. But the gifts of God are not just given to us personally or even to us as a community, they are intended for the whole world. And the only way the whole world will receive them is if we share them. We are the trusted stewards, referred to in various parables, to whom God has entrusted his wealth, and he expects us to share it with those in need. And the whole world is in need of the wealth of God. Salvation is not only about life eternal in the age to come, it is, but not only; it is also about saving 16-year-olds from themselves.
