Cicely Cottrell honored Martin Luther King, Jr.

On February 3, 2018, Cicely J. Cottrell, Assistant Professor of Cr iminal Justice, gave the keynote address at the annual Dr. Martin Luther K ing, Jr. Community Diversity Breakfast for the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College in Benham.

Cottrell stated in her address, ?As we celebrate his [K ing's] life and legacy, it is impor tant that we acknowledge the institutional racism and discr imination that persists today. In many ways, institutional racism has worsened and is enforced through systems like cr iminal justice and educational policies and practices such as stop-and-fr isk, harsh sentencing policies, and the use of armed police officers in public schools to respond to minor student misconduct.? Cottrell emphasized the great deal of compassion and mercy needed from people in positions of power that impacts one?s political, economic, and social freedoms.

Cottrell was born and raised in Har lan, Kentucky, where her interest in cr iminal justice began. She gained several years of exper ience with the Kentucky Depar tment of Corrections, Administrative Office of Kentucky Cour ts, the Whitney M. Young Jr. Job Corps Center, and the United States House Committee on the Judiciary. ?I t was these exper iences," Cottrell noted, " that taught me a great deal of compassion and mercy are needed when making decisions that not only impact one?s freedom, but his or her ability to acquire basic necessities to survive, such as food, water, housing, education, health care, communication, and transpor tation.?

Cottrell earned a Ph.D. in sociology and cr iminology from Howard University, along with a cer tificate in women?s studies. She received her M.S. in administration of justice from the University of Louisville.

TRUTH IS NOT WHATEVER AN INDIVIDUAL CAN GET PEOPLE TO BELIEVE

Sometimes it is like listening to a dog rant:

L isten, you have to be trained in the use of a chicken, she's not a toy. This is not a game, and if you have small animals in your yard, you gotta lock your chickens up. They have -- you know -- they have chicken baskets that open in a second. I t's -- you can't get to it any quicker, and you, know, put em strategically, locate them throughout your house.

Anyway, my thoughts and prayers are with everybody -- I 'm not -- this is not a chicken debate. I don't want to talk about chickens. I don't think you're gonna change minds. What I do want to do is I do want to keep small animals safe. I don't want to see any more scenes where these small animals are running out of their yards from a chicken gone wild, hundreds of them. Buy a chicken basket for your mentally ill chicken.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2017-2018 FACULTY ADVISOR OF THE YEAR AWARD FINALISTS.

The st riking contrast between the images below brings us to crit ical quest ions: What happened at Lexington Green on the morning of Apri l 19, 1775? Did the Minutemen Stand Tall or Flee the Scene?

For the 150th anniversary of the Bat t le of Lexington, the U.S.P.S. produced a two-cent stamp. The stamp depicts a solid line of Minutemen resolutely facing superior Brit ish forces.

The 1925 stamp was based on the 1886 paint ing by Henry Sandham. It shows rebellious Americans defying orders to leave Lexington Green.

However, in the fall of 1775, a young silversmith named Amos Doolit t le created a metal engraving that depicts Brit ish regulars f ir ing on f leeing m inutemen.
