The best novels I read in 2017:

#10 - Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin (translated by Megan McDowell)

#9 - Moonstone: The Boy Who Never Was by Sjón (translated by Victor ia Cr ibb)

#8 - The Vegetarian by Han Kang (translated by Deborah Smith)

#7 - Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett

#6 - The Birds of Opulence by Crystal Wilkinson

#5 - Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson

I lifted my head to look up into the changing leaves, thinking how at some point, we were all headed home. At some point, all of this, everything and everyone, became memory.

Set in present day Brooklyn, the

story is told in the voice of August, who is home br iefly for her father 's funeral. Upon her return, she encounters an old fr iend, and this encounter takes August on a journey back to her childhood.

After the death of her mother, August and her father and brother moved to Brooklyn from Tennessee in the 1970s. There, she joins a tr io of gir ls to form a quar tet. These fr iends share " the weight of growing up gir l in Brooklyn," picking each other up when one fell.

As August struggles to come to terms with her mother 's past, she dreams of a better life, as do her fr iends: " Everywhere we looked, we saw the people trying to dream

themselves out. As though there was someplace other than this place." Eventually, all four fr iends are drawn apar t by their dreams and their family circumstances.

Jacqueline Woodson's prose is stunningly poetic:

When we had finally become friends, when the four of us trusted each other enough to let the world surrounding us into our words, we whispered secrets, pressed side by side by side or sitting cross-legged in our newly tight circle. We opened our mouths and let the stories that had burned nearly to ash in our bellies finally live outside of us.

This novel is a homecoming story and coming-of-age tale. I t is a novel of gir lhood and fr iendship. I t is a novel about color and class. I t is a novel that captures the adolescent yearning to become something and someone. I t is a novel of time and place. I t is a novel that is hear tbreaking and hopeful. More impor tant, it is a novel that lingers on the myster ious force of memory: " I know now that what is tragic isn't the moment. I t is the memory."

Another Brooklyn is a novel that lingers on the mysterious force of memory.

TRUTH IS NOT WHATEVER AN INDIVIDUAL CAN GET PEOPLE TO BELIEVE

That wasn't working too well, because it was get t ing cold all over the place. The ice caps were going to melt , they were going to be gone by now, but now they're set t ing records, so okay, they're at a record level." What part of this statement do you unpack f irst?

MIDWINTER BREAK QUOTE"The family is raised - the work's done. That can't be it, can it?"

Bernard MacLaverty, Author of Midwinter Break

"A Long Way from Homei s Peter Carey's late style masterpiece; a thr illing high speed story that star ts in one way, then takes you to another place altogether. Set in the 1950s in the embers of the Br itish Empire, painting a picture of Queen and subject, black, white and those in-between, this br illiantly vivid novel illustrates how the possession of an ancient culture spirals through history - and the love made and hur t caused along the way."

THIS WEEK IN READING: THE BEST NEW NOVELSA LONG WAY FROM HOME BY PETER CAREY

" Aside from his trusty piano, Alfred Busi lives alone in his villa over looking the waves. On the night before receiving his town?s highest honor, Busi is wrested from bed by noises in his cour tyard and then stunned by an attacking intruder? his hands and neck are scratched, his face is bitten. Busi can?t say what it was that he encountered, exactly, but he feels his assailant was neither man nor animal. The attack sets off a chain of events that will cast as a shadow on Bus's career, imper il his home, and alter the fabr ic of his town."

THE MELODY BY JIM CRACE

Frances Cole: " Julia asked, 'what is a groundhog' and Ghassan said, 'we eat groundhogs in Yemen.'"

Scott Parker : " I thought Ghassan couldn't eat pork."

Benedict Arnold's name is synonymous with t reason. During the Revolut ionary War, he began the war in the Cont inental Army, but later defected to the Brit ish Army. A plaque commemorat ing his last residence is located in London's Marylebone neighborhood.

Aaron Burr, the third Vice President of the United States, was t ried for t reason in 1807. He was turned in by his co-conspirator, General James Wilkinson. He was acquit ted.

Thomas Dorr was convicted of t reason against a state, Rhode Island. He led an uprising against the governor of the state in 1842. He was pardoned in 1845.

On January 30, stone-faced Democrats refused to clap during the State of the Union Address, leading some to suggest their react ion was " t reasonous."
