Dim the lights, crank up themusic and move to therhythm. It's that time of

year again, when dance fans acrossthe nation pull out their dancingshoes and get ready for anotherexciting season of "So You Think YouCan Dance."

The spotlight shone on this year'snew batch of hopefuls starting withlast week's premiere. The previouseight seasons have witnessedthousands of aspiring dancersgetting their hopes dashed on thedance floor before a panel of judges, while a few have had their dreamscome true. The ninth seasonpromises to serve up more of thesame.

In a format that's similar to theenormously popular singing competi-tion show "American Idol,"auditions have been held in citiesacross the country, from Los Angelesin the west to Atlanta in the east.Auditions for "Dance" were alsoheld in Salt Lake City, Dallas, andNew York City.

This week's episode -- airingWednesday, May 30, on Fox -- wrapsup the audition component of theseason. The last week's premiereaired on Thursday, but the seriessettles into its regular Wednesdaytime-slot now that "American Idol"has wrapped up.

In what's become fairly standardin the reality format, viewers and

judges are treated to a parade ofdancers -- some who have the skills, and some who seem to have beenborn with two left feet. As always, the panel of judges is on hand tooffer sparse praise and bitingcritique of the hopefuls.

"They need a little more than justa passion to do it; they've got tohave something called talent," saidseries creator and executiveproducer Nigel Lythgoe in aninterview with Oprah.com. Lythgoealso sits behind the judges table asone of the experts who makes thefinal decision of whether or not acontestant continues to the nextlevel.

The ninth season of "Dance" willbe ushering in what could be thebiggest shakeup to the show'sformat since the second season.

Up until now, the show aired twoweekly episodes -- one for perform-ances and one for results. In the firstepisode, the young men and womenwould take to the dance floor, hopefully dazzling viewers andjudges alike as they dipped, twirled, and leaped across the stage. It wastheir time to impress, as the judgesare critical, and Lythgoe especiallyhas a reputation for demandingperfection.

After the judges made their callson the best and worst performances,it was then up to the viewers to votefor their favorites. The results of thephone-in polls were revealed duringthe next evening's show.

In January, it was announced thatthe traditional second episode of the

week, in which hopes were dashedwhen the voting results from theprevious night were revealed, wouldnot be returning for this season.Instead, the single, two-hour weeklyepisode is being reworked toincorporate both the performancesand the voting results.

Details are still being ironed out,but Lythgoe has hinted at a fewdifferent ideas that are beingbounced around.

In an interview with "DanceInforma" magazine, he mentionedthat the new format would likelyallow dancers to perform at thebeginning, then the results of theprevious week's vote would beannounced. The bottom threecouples would then dance for theirsurvival, and it would be up to thejudges to make the final call. Thesedetails are not, however, set in stone, and things can change quickly in theindustry.

Despite this rather significantchange, longtime fans shouldn'tworry that the show will be toodifferent for their tastes. The familiarface of Cat Deeley returns to herhosting duties, a role she's gracefullyfilled since the second season.

At the judges table, Lythgoereturns to his seat, and ballroomdance champion Mary Murphyreturns as well. Murphy has been aresident judge for several seasons, but she missed a season to recoverfrom thyroid cancer. As in previousseasons, weekly guest judges willjoin the two permanent seats incritiquing the performances.

The winner last season was fan-favorite Melanie Moore, the short-haired dancer from Marietta, Ga.,

who started generating buzz almostfrom the moment she first steppedonto the dance floor. This diva ofdance effortlessly mastered everystyle of dance in the competition, and it paid off for her: she ended upwinning the competition with awhopping 47 per cent of the vote, easily edging out the other threefinalists.

Moore, who began dancing whenshe was only two years old, wowedboth the judges and audiences withher chameleon-like ability to master

virtually any dance style, despitebeing trained mainly in the contem-porary style.

Indeed, having the ability toadapt to various dance styles isprobably the not-so-secret weaponto advancing in the competition. After being selected by the judges tobecome finalists (typically a top 20,although this format has been toyedwith in the past), the contestants aresplit into male/female pairs. Eachweek, the dance partners areassigned a style of dance and givenminimal time to master it beforethey're thrust onstage in front of thejudges and TV cameras.

Swingin' summerShaking it up: New 'Dance' format features two-hour episodes

Melanie Moore won Season 8 of "So You Think You Can Dance"

THE NEW BIG FISH: It appearsthat the recent passing of televisiontitan Dick Clark has opened the doorto what may in the future be dubbed"The Seacrest Era."

NBCUniversal recently announcedit has signed a two-year deal withRyan Seacrest, the industry's newgolden boy among entertainmenthosts. This contract will see Seacrest'spresence expand as he embraces newresponsibilities with NBC and E!Entertainment Television on variousplatforms. He'll be lending hischarisma and bright smile to suchthings as news reports, sportscoverage and more entertainmentevents.

"I am humbled to have theconfidence of Steve Burke, Ted Harbert,Bonnie Hammer and many otherswithin the NBCUniversal family, tostrategically extend my relationship toencompass NBC programming," saidSeacrest. "I'm especially lookingforward to working with all the stellaron-air talents and producingexecutives involved in NBC's news, entertainment and sports divisions, and I'm eager and excited to take onthis broader new role."

His plate will be very full as heworks as a special correspondent forNBC News' "Today," as well ascontributing to NBC prime-time newsprograms. He'll also be a part of NBC'steam covering the Olympics, startingwith this year's Summer Games inLondon. He'll continue his work as themanaging editor of E! News, but hisrole will expand there as well. He willfollow in the footsteps of iconic TVjournalists like Barbara Walters andKatie Couric by producing high-profilecelebrity interviews to air as specials.

These new gigs are on top of the

professional responsibilities he'salready shouldering, including hishosting duties for Fox's "AmericanIdol" and ABC's "Dick Clark's NewYear's Rockin' Eve With RyanSeacrest." He also still hosts his radioshow, "On Air With Ryan Seacrest,"and runs his own production company,Ryan Seacrest Productions.

SURREAL TALK: In a unique twist, specialty channel IFC is turning apopular podcast into a full-blown TVtalk show. However, considering thebig-name talent it was alreadyattracting, and the fact that i tspopularity has already spun thepodcast into a radio show, this movewas bound to happen sooner or later.

Hosted by Scott Aukerman,"Comedy Bang Bang" is beingmodeled after traditional late-nighttalk shows and will premiere on Friday,June 8. The inaugural 30-minuteepisode will feature popular comicactor Zach Galifianakis (2009's "TheHangover," 2010's "Due Date") as themain guest. Aukerman will alsowelcome Danny Mahoney, Will Forte,Andy Daly, Thomas Lennon and GillianJacobs.

Subsequent installments in the 10-episode series will include ElizabethBanks (2012's "The Hunger Games"),Jon Hamm ("Mad Men"), MichaelCera (2007's "Juno"), Amy Poehler("Parks and Recreation"), Ed Helms("The Office"), Paul Rudd (2008's"Role Models"), musician Weird AlYankovic, Tenacious D's Jack Black andKyle Gass, Topher Grace ("That '70sShow") and Jon Heder (2004's"Napoleon Dynamite"), among others.

When it was still operating as justa radio show, "Comedy Bang Bang"attracted such stars as Aziz Ansari,Patton Oswalt, Ben Stiller and DavidCross. Additionally, Yankovic, Galifi-anakis, Cera and Hamm were guestson the radio show, so their participa-tion in the new TV program will serve

as return engagements. The quirky show will depart from

the traditional celebrity interviewformat by including character cameos, games, dream sequence detours, talking set pieces, sketches and more. This will allow it to fit in nicely withIFC's slogan -- "Always On. SlightlyOff." -- as well as the network'sprogramming tastes.

Aukerman previously wrote andperformed in HBO's "Mr. Show WithBob and David." More recently, he co-created "Between Two Ferns WithZach Galifianakis," an interview serieson the Funny or Die video website.

CRIME CHOPPER: A popular comicthat first debuted on Facebook willsoon become a staple in Fox's newAnimation Domination programmingblock.

Started by brothers Ethan andMalachai Nicolle, "Axe Cop" will be ingood company on the network knownfor its adult cartoon fare when itpremieres in its Saturday evening slotnext year. The network has so farordered six 15-minute episodes.

"'Axe Cop' is one of the most

creative, hilarious and naturally viralcomic properties to emerge in the lastdecade," said Fox's Nick Weidenfeld."I've hoped someone would adapt'Axe Cop' for television for years andcouldn't be happier that we get to bethat someone. 'Axe Cop' has all themakings of an iconic animated seriesand it will help set the tone for F ox'snew late-prime Saturday animationlineup."

Ethan Nicolle was only 29 years oldwhen the first "Axe Cop" comics weredrawn over his Christmas holiday in2009 and then posted on Facebook onJan. 25, 2010. However, the conceptactually originated with Malachai, whowas only five years old at the time.Described by his older brother as a"boy genius," Malachai comes upwith the ideas for the stories whileEthan puts them all down on paper.
