Comedians like Jon Stewart,Stephen Colbert and BillMaher are some of theleading sources of political newsnowadays. The pundits provide factsabout governmental developmentsand policies while providingentertainment and comic reliefabout serious issues.

Though the media is supposed tobe unbiased and unwavering basedon events in the world, satirists likeColbert take an obvious side on thepolitical spectrum to show some ofthe exaggerations made by theopposite parties.

HBO's new series follows a newsshow that started out as a simplebroadcast but ends up breakingdown walls that so many have beenavoiding. Starring Jeff Daniels, JaneFonda and Sam Waterston, "TheNewsroom" premieres Sunday, June24, on HBO Canada.

Will McAvoy (Daniels) was asuccessful, non-partisan newscasterfor "News Night," a nightlybroadcast that covered the politicalnews developments to the day. Hehad a solid audience and was thefrontman for the whole network,ACN, because of his popularity. Hisstories played it safe -- he neverasked controversial questions orpushed the limits. He kept hispersonal opinions out of hisinterviews and he was "popularbecause he doesn't bug anybody."

That image will soon come to anend. During a panel discussion,McAvoy is asked by a collegestudent about why he thinksAmerica is the greatest country inthe world. Something within himsnaps, and he declares that it isn'tthe greatest. He then spews outfacts and figures about the lowincome, lower education and highcosts of the country -- and his entirerant is caught on camera.

Afraid he will lose his audience,and ultimately his job, McAvoyagrees to revamp the entire newsshow to become a serious, hard-news provider -- putting politicianson the spot, asking questions voterswant to ask and, finally, providinghis own commentary on some of theevents. Unfortunately, not everyoneis happy about the new ideas.

The new producer, MackenzieMacHale (Emily Mortimer), isconstantly trying to tighten theleash on what McAvoy is trying todo, and the two are frequentlybutting heads. A simple request totake his BlackBerry off the deskresults in him throwing hiscellphone at the camera.

Charlie Skinner (Waterston), aspresident of ACN, plays the refereebetween the floor and the offices,going to bat for McAvoy but alsohelping him stay grounded. When hepitched the new structure of theshow to the bigwigs, he said: "Thenewsroom will become a courtroombecause American voters need alawyer."

Leona Lansing (Fonda) is the new

CEO of the company that runs ACN,and she is not pleased with the newformat of the show. She wantsMcAvoy to revert to his human-interest stories that made him sopopular in the first place, and shekeeps threatening to fire him if hekeeps stretching the boundaries.

Series creator, writer andproducer Aaron Sorkin put himself inseveral newsrooms to do front-lineresearch for his scripts. He hadalready worked on two other seriesabout TV shows -- "Sports Night"and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip"-- but for "The Newsroom," Sorkinsat behind the camera at Fox Newsand CNN, as well as "Hardball withChris Matthews" and "CountdownWith Keith Olbermann." In aninterview with "TV Guide," Sorkinstated that he wanted to provide areal sense of what newspeople gothrough.

"It'll be aspirational. It'll be wishfulfilment. But they're going to loseas much as they're going to win. Inother words, it's not going to be afantasy," he said. "They're going tobe trying to do well in a contextwhere it's very difficult to do wellwhen there are commercial concernsand political concerns and corporateconcerns."

Sorkin's work on "The WestWing" got him multiple Emmyawards for his trophy case, and hesays he aims to give news teamsthe same treatment he gave theWhite House in his previous series.

"I'm loving the idea of comingback to television and taking thesame combination of idealism andromanticism and realism that madegovernment sexy on "The West

Wing" and seeing if we can't do thesame with the news and journalism,which are held in at least as muchcontempt," he said.

Daniels has a recognizable face,like most newscasters should, butlet's hope some of his biggest rolesdon't take away from his credibility.His roles in "Dumb & Dumber"(1994), "RV" (2006) and "MyFavorite Martian" (1999) may painthim as a comedy actor, but he's hadhis share of dramatic roles as well.He has appeared in "Terms of

Endearment" (1983), "Gettysburg"(1993), "State of Play," (2009) and"The Lookout" (2007). He's alsowon several stage awards for hisroles in various plays, including"Fifth of July" and "Lemon Sky."

Waterston is also a recognizableface, though his best roles havedrawn in a different audience thanthose who saw "Dumb & Dumber."As District Attorney Jack McCoy, heappeared in over 350 episodes of"Law & Order," as well as a handfulof episodes of the spinoffs. He alsostarred in NBC series "I'll Fly Away"in the early '90s and "The KillingFields" (1984.)

STARS AND SPARKLERS: This year'sIndependence Day festivities will featureplenty of star power, lots of cracklingfireworks and, of course, the Pops.

CBS is gearing up for this year'sbroadcast of the annual "Boston PopsFireworks Spectacular" by announcing ithas landed renowned TV actor MichaelChiklis as the special's host. But thefireworks display will have to contendwith the powerhouse pipes of Oscar- andGrammy-winning performer JenniferHudson, who will sing some of her mostpopular tunes with the Boston PopsOrchestra.

The special will broadcast live fromthe Charles River Esplanade in Boston onWednesday, July 4. This year marks the39th anniversary of the annual outdoorconcert. The last 20 minutes of thespecial, which will feature the acclaimedfireworks display, will run withoutcommercials.

Hudson will bring lots of popularappeal to the event. As living proof thatcontestants don't have to win the"American Idol" contest to becomesuccessful, the singer went on to win anAcademy Award for her role as Effie in2006's "Dreamgirls," which was also herfilm debut. Two years later, she won aGrammy for her self-titled debut album.

As an actor, Chiklis has been the manin charge through his leading roles in"The Shield" and "No Ordinary Family."He'll be part of an all-star ensemble cast,which also includes Dennis Quaid andCarrie-Anne Moss, when the highlyanticipated CBS series "Vegas" debutsthis fall.

Keith Lockhart, who has been theBoston Pops conductor since 1995, willlead the orchestra through its perform-ance. He has helmed more than 1,300concerts with the group and has helped

usher in a new era for the orchestra. Thenew ventures have included the group'sfirst Grammy nominations, an increase ininternational touring and its pre-gameperformance at Super Bowl XXXVI in2002 -- the first time a symphonyorchestra ever performed at the footballevent.

INNOCENCE LOST: Hundreds ofthousands of people in the U.S. arecurrently in jail, and while trials andinvestigations usually point to the guiltyparty, sometimes, the wrong person isput behind bars.

Now, an actor known for his roles incrime dramas is lending his voice to anew series that tells the true stories ofthe people whose voices were ignored.They were betrayed, neglected and oftenforgotten by the justice system and leftto serve terms of imprisonment for noreal reason at all.

Since the '90s, Chris Noth has built astrong reputation in Hollywood as adetective in two of the shows in the"Law & Order" franchise, and he is nowplaying a state's attorney who's had hisown brushes with the law in "The GoodWife." Next, he will narrate the newone-hour series "I Didn't Do It," whichwill premiere on Investigation Discoverythis fall.

"Chris Noth's distinctive voice willgive even more substance to thiscompelling and emotional series," saidexecutive producer Leanna Crouch. "Weanticipate his involvement will helpbring even greater attention to theimportant issue of wrongful convic-tions."

The inaugural run of "I Didn't Do It,"which is currently in production, will airin six parts and will tell the personalstories of people who were convicted ofcrimes they didn't commit, thus illumi-nating a tragic flaw in today's justicesystem.

These stories will be told through re-enactments and a series of interviews

with the accused, jurors, attorneys andinvestigators, all while those working forthe system continue the hunt for the realcriminals.

THESE GIRLS CAN SING: Two ofHollywood's hottest actresses will maketheir return to television after manyyears away when Fox's "Glee" starts itsfourth season this fall.

One of them is best known for herversatility on the big screen, while theother is renowned for her role as arelationship columnist with a shoe-shopping addiction.

Movie star Kate Hudson will take ononly the third TV guest role of her careerwhen she helps open the musicalcomedy's new season with a six-episodearc. Later on, Sarah Jessica Parker willreturn to television for the first timesince "Sex and the City" ended, whenshe also guest stars on "Glee."

Hudson last appeared on a TV seriesin 1997 when she appeared in anepisode of "EZ Streets," which waspreceded by a guest role on "Party ofFive" in 1996. It was in 2000 when herstar power first got a major boost

through her role as Penny Lane in"Almost Famous," which won her aGolden Globe. Her popularity grew with"How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days" (2003)and she even found success when shestepped out of her element for "TheSkeleton Key" (2005). In 2009, sheshowed off her prowess as a singerthrough her role in "Nine."

Parker will likely always beremembered as Carrie Bradshaw ofHBO's "Sex and the City" and its twobig-screen extensions -- a role thatearned her several awards. Yet she's hadincredible staying power in the business,with a career that dates back to the late'70s on Broadway, and she has juggled amix of film and television projects eversince.

Fox has not yet released detailsabout either star's character or the airdates of the special episodes.
