Easter Egg Hunt Results – Janet Butler

reported that 263 children were registered

with 80% from Tuscola, 15% from 17 other

Illinois towns, and 5% from out of state

visitors.

Relay for Life Cardinals Baseball Game –

Debbie Graber has 6 tickets available at $20

each for the Sunday, August 19, 2018 1:15p

game. Ticket includes a hot dog and soft

drink. See Debbie if you are interested.

Ervin Park Playground Project – David

Morgan reported that Tuscola Rotary was

donating $2,000 for a special mulch to be

provided for the playground. Dave will pass

around a sign-up sheet for Thursday, April

26th service project.

Summer Meal Program – Kiwanians

generously donated $241.00 for the

program. With the additional of club funds,

$300.00 was donated.

Program:

Wilma Allen introduced

our guest speaker, Dr.

Pamela Lau from Parkland

College. Dr. Lau is the

Vice President for

Academic Services and

came to speak about the

Parkland College Aviation program that

Parkland acquired from the University of

Illinois in the Fall of 2014. The original

program began in 1946. The U of I was

eliminating the program and was looking for

a college to take it over. Parkland College

agreed to do so striking a deal that included

$3 million in seed funding, leasing the

buildings at Willard Airport for $1 per year,

and leasing the 28 aircraft for $1 per year.

The program has grown due to active

marketing by Parkland, a strong heritage and

reputation, high standards, core staff

expertise, FAA approved programs, and

competitive pricing.

Students can earn a private pilot,

commercial pilot, and/or flight instructor

certification. In conjunction with

certification, a student can earn an

Association in Science – Aviation degree.

Program:

Bill Bauer introduced our

guest speaker, Brian Moody.

Brian is the Executive

Director of Tuscola

Economic Development and

Chamber, and Fire Chief.

Brian’s main topic was Douglas County

CEO, a program for high school seniors to

learn about business and entrepreneurship.

This is a national program in sixty

communities. Students tour businesses and

learn skills including entrepreneurship, job

readiness, leadership, teamwork, and

presentation. Each student has or

establishes a business, and the class does a

group business to raise funds for their

individual businesses and the program.

On other topics, Brian said there should be

another restaurant opening on West Sale

Street, as well as some outdoor dining from

some existing downtown restaurants. The

753 page application to the state for a

Douglas County Enterprise Zone was

approved. There has been interest by some

companies to lease land for solar energy

farms. The city is still working with the

state to expand the I-57/US 36 interchange.

Cronus is still trying to finalize a contract

with the new general contractor,

Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions.

Pancake Breakfast Results – Mike Damler

reported that we served 159 customers.

Total gross receipts were $1,414.00. Forty

Kiwanians worked and/or supported this

fundraiser.

Summer Meals Program – Summer Phillips

from the Douglas County Health

Department came and thanked the members

for the $300.00 donation to this program.

This year the program runs from June 5 –

July 27 except for July 4 from 9:00AM to

11:00AM. Summer need drivers,

volunteers, and paper products. Summer left

a sign-up sheet with Pat Damler. Contact

Summer or Pat if you would like to sign up

to help.

Chappell reported that the club needs a

chairperson or co-chairs to lead this food

drive. Contact Jan if you will serve.

2018 TCHS Scholarships – Mike Damler

reported that 17 applications had been

received. He and his committee of Linda

Damler, Jean Leonard, and Doris Young

would be evaluating and selecting the

winners.

event this year. Janet circulated the sign-up

sheets and will do so for the next couple of

weeks.

Relay for Life – Debbie Graber updated

members, provided sign-up information,

offered yard signs, and luminaria bags. The

event is June 16 from 2-10p at TCHS.

Carol Beals advised that Chad Daugherty of

the Douglas County Animal Shelter was

unable to speak today due to illness. She

thanked the Kiwanians who brought and

donated products for the shelter.

Carol Beals advised that she would deliver

the members’ donations to the shelter after

our meeting.

Ervin Park Playground Refresh – Dave

Morgan thanked the volunteers for the hard

work they did. Tuscola city workers,

Rotarians, and Kiwanians made this happen.

Drive-Up Drug Collection – This service

project was a great success! Dave Morgan

reported that approx. 135 pounds of pills and

10 pounds of sharps were turned in. He

thanked the volunteers.

Program:

Maureen Bergeson

introduced our speaker,

Devin Black, the Director of

the Tuscola Public Library.

Devin graduated from the

University of Illinois in

Library Science. He came

to Tuscola in 2013.

The library has 18,000 items in its

collections and 43,000 items circulated. In

2017, the computers were used for 6,000

hours with 4,500 users. The library is

primarily funded through tax dollars.

Services that the library provides include

free wi-fi/internet access, books, e-books,

DVDs, use of computers, printing, faxing,

scanning, laminating, home delivery, and on

Fridays from 2-4p Tech-Drop In assistance.

The library holds several events each year

such as outdoor movies, Halloween Party,

and others. There are always special

Summer Reading Program for children,

teens, and adults that our club helps support.

2018 APRIL BOARD MEETING MINUTES

The meeting was called to order at The Smith House on Wednesday April 11, 2018 at 11:59

AM by President Jan Chappell with the following officers, club directors and guests present:

The following items of business were conducted:

1. Minutes of March Board Meeting – Carol Martin made a motion that the minutes be

approved as presented. Doris Young seconded the motion and it was approved. Copy

of Board meeting minutes are on club website under “Members Area.”

2. April Secretary’s Monthly Reports – Janet Butler had emailed Board members copies

of the monthly Tuscola Volunteer Hours report and the Kiwanis International monthly

report for their review. There were 831 service and 207 fundraising hours for a total

of 1,038 hours reported. David Butler made a motion to approve the reports.

Maureen Bergeson seconded the motion, and it was approved. Copies of the monthly

reports are on club website under “Members Area.”

3. April Treasurer’s Monthly Reports – Candy Hudson had emailed Board members a

copy of the club and foundation monthly treasurer’s reports. As of 4/11/18, the

current balance for the club is $11,624.47 and the foundation balance is $10,895.05

Maureen Bergeson made a motion to approve the reports as submitted. Carol Martin

seconded the motion and it was approved. Copy of treasurer’s reports are on club

website under “Members Area.”

4. Disbursements/Reimbursements –

Christmastown

the 4/14 pancake breakfast sausage

Pete Buckley made motions to approve the above disbursements. Carol Martin

seconded the motion and it was approved.

5. New Donation Requests – None

6. Builders Club Update – Tammy Baer reported that there were seven members who

attended the April meeting. There was a speaker and the members spent the

remainder of the meeting matching Easter eggs.

7. Key Club Update – Mike Damler requested that the Board approve the costs of pizzas

for the Key Club’s May meeting in thanks for assisting with the Easter Egg Hunt, and

to have four of the Key Club’s officers attend a meeting as the club’s guests for lunch.

Dave Morgan made a motion to approve Mike’s request. David Butler seconded the

motion and it was approved.

8. Dan Russell Memorial Tree – Jan Chappell reported that the check had been delivered

to the Tuscola School District. She will follow up, if necessary regarding the planting

of the tree and the plaque.

9. Pancake Breakfast – Pat Damler reported that all was in order. Janet Butler picked up

the sausage on Monday. The four sausage boxes are in the refrigerator at Forty

Martyrs thawing.

10. Ervin Park Playground/Kiwanis One Day Project – Dave Morgan reported that

enough volunteers had signed up, and there should be 4-5 Rotarians there to help, too.

The special mulch has been ordered and will be delivered to the playground.

11. Read & Learn Program for K-Kids – Janet Butler reported she is compiling the

options for Beth Linstead. When Beth selects the books, she would like to have for

the K-Kids, Janet will bring back the request to the Board with the cost

12. Dues Update – Candy Hudson reported that she had mailed invoices/reminders to

those members with unpaid dues. No further follow-up will be done until August,

after dues that will be due by 7-31-18.

13. Voting Delegates for Kiwanis International Convention – After discussion, David

Butler made a motion to appoint Carol Burwash and Doris Young as Tuscola’s

delegates with Tim Hoel and Wayne Ward as the alternates. Jerry Reynolds seconded

the motion and it was approved.

14. .2018/2019 Nomination Chairperson – Jerry Reynold volunteered to be chairperson.

The club will need candidates for Vice President and two Club Directors. Jerry will

present a slate of candidates at our May 14 meeting for membership voting.

15. K-Kids “End of School Picnic” – Janet Butler reported that the picnic will be Monday,

May 21, the day that all the grades will be at Ervin Park for the day. We will plan on

serving the hot dogs, chips, etc. about 3:00PM. Tim Hoel volunteered to again take

care of the fire. Volunteers will need to report to the park about 2:15PM. Jeannine

Fortney will provide further details later.

16. USPS Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive – This food drive benefits SAM Pantry. Joyce

and Andy Brzozkiewicz are not chairing the food drive this year. The date is May 12,

2018 and the club needs a new chairperson or chair team. If you are interested in

chairing this food drive, please contact Jan Chappell.

17. June Board Meeting Date – Due to a travel conflict, Jan Chappell asked Board

members if the Board would meet Wednesday, June 6, based on Nancy Smith being

able to accommodate the change. It was agreed that June 6 would work for the Board

members.

NOTE: After the meeting, Jan confirmed that June 6 will work for Nancy.

CHANGE YOUR CALENDAR TO JUNE 6 FOR THE BOARD MEETING

18. Next Board Meeting – The next Board meeting will be Wednesday May 9, 2018 at the

Smith House at noon.

19. Adjournment – There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at

12:55PM.
