your cover letter and resume• Make sure your cover letter lets the

interviewer know what job you are applying for

Make your job hunting the top priority

• Learn to cope with family and friends

• Why follow through on an interview?– You never know what will be the

deciding factor

– The one who follows up may just be the one to get the job

How to follow through on a job interview

• By telephone call (2 or 3 days after an interview)

• Post interview letter and/or email– Send immediately – do not put this off!

Sell First, Negotiate Later

You are the seller until you get an offer

Recognize “real” offers

• Confusion Questions– Are you willing to work weekends?–Why don’t you come back on Monday?–We’ll almost certainly be able to use use

two months form now

Real offers have these elements• A clear statement that says “ We are offering to

you the job of ____. Are you interested?”• A date, time, and place to work• A definite starting salary• A description of the job• Description of the working conditions, including

hours, vacation and holiday schedules, moving/relocation costs

• Introduction to your immediate supervisor if you have not already met

• A tour of the facility

Know what the job is worth to the employer

• Pay rate vary widely depending on:– Industry– Employer– Economic Factors– Geographic Location

Know what the job is worth to YOU!

• Your pay should be a balance between your worth and the employers worth– Do you homework– Don’t undersell yourself– Be realistic– Determine if money is the most

important factor; getting the job may be

Your “package” includes:

• Salary• Insurance coverage• Vacation/holiday/sick leave• School reimbursement• Bonuses • Stock options and/or 401K• Parking or a company car• Dues to professional organization or

magazine

Negotiating Strategies

• Accept what they offer if it matches your skills, education, experience…

• Ask for a higher range then what they gave you

• Ask for the top of the range if you worth matches that dollar amount

• Request higher than what the offer you, but be prepared to provide evidence as to why you are worth more

Know your lowest acceptable wage

• Prepare a bare bones budget

• Compute your taxes (1/3 of gross wages)

Negotiating Guidelines• Avoid, if possible, any financial disclosures in

the preliminary stages of the interview• Tell the truth about your present salary• Remember, money is not everything• The wage you get to begin work will be the

basis for all future raises• You have the most negotiating power once the

employer has decided to hire you• NEVER tell an employer you have another job

offer at a higher wage unless it is true

Accept/Reject/Counter/Resign

Accept the offer• Verbally review the offer• Request time to think over the offer only it it is

necessary (24 hours is ok, more than 48 hours is inconsiderate)

• If you accept the offer, write a letter of acceptance

• If you reject the offer, write a letter of rejection• Send letters to all the other companies you’ve

contacted• Send a letter to each reference and all the

people who have been helping you

Handle the counteroffer

• If you accepted an offer with a new employer and told your employer you are leaving

• When the do counter offer carefully consider what they are offering and reasons as to why you are leaving

If you accept the counteroffer

• Ask for it in writing

• Call the other employer and explain the circumstances

• Follow up your call with a letter of explanation

If you reject the counter offer

• Write a formal letter of resignation

• Thank the employer for the counteroffer, and then resign

• Always offer a two weeks notice

Resign Formally

• This is your last opportunity to shine

• Show your appreciation

• Take time to thank the employer

• Build positive relationships

• Heal any wounds, if necessary

Write a formal letter of resignation

• Keep your letter upbeat

• Thank your employer for the time you were employed

• State the effective date of resignation

• If you are willing to assist the employer after you leave, state this
