Greetings Welcome to Turku! It is my pleasure to welcome all the participants of theEuropean Heritage Congress organised by Europa Nostra toTurku in the springtime. Europa Nostra carries out valuablework, and we are proud thatTurku,as the oldest city in Finland, has the opportunity to host this congress. This is a significanthonour for both Turku and Finland, which this year celebratesits centenary. At this time, I would like to thank all of youwho have had a hand in bringing this congress to Turku.
Surrounded by an archipelago,Turku has often acted as thegateway to new ideas and influences arriving in our country. This is why our culture today is a rich combination of new
and old, east and west as well as both intangible and built cultural heritage. The city ofTurku wishes to cherish and conserve its 800-year-old culture as evidenced by the PaavoNurmi Legacy project, which this year won a European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage /Europa Nostra Award. This year is Finland’s centenary, and Turku also participates in the celebrations with traditionsin mind, a bold attitude, and with our eyes on the future.
One of the main events of the centenary is the largest folk culture event in Europe,Europeade, which will now be held in Finland for the first time, here in Turku. In July, theevent will attract over 6,000 dancers, singers and musicians to our city.Turku is also the onlyreformation city in Finland and the capital of the Church of Finland. Kirkkopäivät (ChurchDays) is the main event of the Reformation anniversary year, and will take place at the endof May. It is an urban festival intended for all, which offers a look into the Church of the 21st century. Also, in July, the world’s largest sailing ships will sail to the city for the fifth time.On this occasion, the city will be full of young sailors from all over the world.
I myself was born and raised in Turku, and this city means everything to me. In Turku, loversof culture will find plenty of interesting events, such as concerts, theatre performances, artexhibitions and festivals. For this reason, I hope that Turku will leave a lasting impression onyou during your visit, and that you will have the chance to come back some day.

The Paimio Sanatorium
This tour will present the most important and world-famous works of three masters ofFinnish Modernism: Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), Erik Bryggman (1891-1955) and Pekka Pitkänen(b. 1927). Aalto and Bryggman brought Functionalism to Finland and Pitkänen wasBryggman’s apprentice in the 1950s. The Paimio Sanatorium (1929-1933) was Alvar Aalto’sinternational breakthrough and the start of his organic approach to Functionalism. Brightcolours and views of the outside world are used to cheer up the patients. Structural solutions were very ambitious. In Bryggman’s Resurrection Chapel (1938-1941) andPitkänen’s experimental concrete architecture in the Chapel of the Holy Cross (1963-1967),nature and natural light play a crucial role. Lunch will be served at the Tuorla Manor - a 19th century neoclassical manor complex, the extension and renovation of which wasdesigned by Erik Bryggman.
