1. DESCRIPTION:

TURCO DY-CHEK PENETRANT INSPECTION is a method of non-destructive testingwhich effectively detects material discontinuities open to the surface. It is one of themost sensitive of the penetrant inspection techniques.

The following steps are necessary to obtain accurate results:

4. PRECLEANING AND DRYING:

It is absolutely necessary that parts be dry and free from all surface contamination.Not only can surface soils cover or bridge a discontinuity, inhibiting entrance of thedye penetrant, they can also absorb the penetrant and render a false indication.Typical surface soils which must be removed include oils, rust, paint, carbon, grease,oxide deposits, and residues from previous inspections. Your HENKELREPRESENTATIVE will assist you in precleaning and post cleaning productrecommendations. Product recommended for this step is Turco Prechek LF.ICAUTION: I

Ultrasonic cleaning techniques have been found to assist in remcbvingpenetrant

residuesandothercontaminationfor criticalparts. I

Abrasive cleaning, such as vapour blasting with coarse abrasive, is notrecommended since it tends to peen flaws and obscure their dete.ftion. When anabrasive sUr!ace finishing method is used prior to inspection, an e~chtreatme.nt isrecommenced. .

Before penetrant application, it is absolutely necessary that all parts Ibe dry. Dryingmay be accomplished by any conventional method.

APPLYING TURCO DY-CHEK PENETRANT: I

Application of the dye penetrant is the second step in the pen~~rant inspectionprocess. This step must not be attempted until precleaning and d

ring have been

completed.

TURCO DY-CHEK PENETRANT is a red liquid which penetrates surfacediscontinuities, even extremely minute ones. Apply TURCO DY-CHEk PENETRANTliberally, either by brush, spray or dip methods. Under normal conditi~ns, a penetrant

dwell time of 10 minutes is sufficient. Shorter dwell times on thej order of 1 - 5minutes are generally adequate. Some trial of the process on know'1flaws is helpfulin establishing the optimum dwell times and technique to be employed.

APPLYING TURCO DY -CHEK REMOVER

The next step in the process is penetrant removal. Wipe off the exces

The next step in the TURCO DY-CHEK PENETRANT PROCESS is t~e application ofDY-CHEKlFLURO CHEK NAD DEVELOPER. The Developer serves Itwo purposes.

a. A fine film of TURCO DY-CHEKlFLURO CHEK NAD DEVELCPPERapplied tothe parts provides a white contrasting background for t~e red TURCODY-CHEK PENETRANT.

b. It draws the penetrant from flaws to the surface of the part so lit can be readilyobserved and evaluated.

Spray a thin, even coating of TURCO DY-CHEKlFLURO CHEK NAp DEVELOPERonto the area being inspected. TURCO DY-CHEKlFLUR9. CHEK NADDEVELOPER is a liquid suspension of a powdered absorbent matenial and must bethorouQhlvaQitatedbefore use to insure complete suspension.

PER should beemployed since this method provides a thin, even coating, precludin laps and runs,and insures clear flaw indications: A spray gun with an atomising tip, operated with aminimum flow of developer under 25 to 30 psi air pressure, is rec mmended. Therapid drying of TURCO DY-CHEKlFLURO CHEK NAD DEVEL PER exposesindications as rapidly as parts can be handled. When spraying facilities usingcompressed air are not available, a light even coating of developer m y be applied bymeans of the TURCO DY-CHEKlFLURO CHEK NAD DEVELOP R press sprayaerosol containers. TURCO DY-CHEKlFLURO CHEK NAD DEVEL PER should beapplied in a spray booth or in a well ventilated area.

Since red indications will remain visible until wiped off manually, the

The extent and seriousness of the flaws are evaluated by trained per~onnel.

10. POST CLEANING:

To remove residual penetrant following the process, it has been fo nd that vapourdegreasing or a suitable solvent removal method is generally ad quate. Prior tovapour degreasing, remove developer residues by flushing with ter applied byspray. Parts need to be dried before vapour degreasing. For critical c eanliness, suchas that required for some aerospace applications, ultrasonic clea ing techniqueshave been found to be satisfactory.

TURCO DY-CHEK PENETRANT is a red liquid which penetrants surfacediscontinuities, even extremely minute ones. Evaluation of the size, shape andnumber of specific articles to be inspected will determine whether spr~ying, brushing,or dipping should be employed as the method of penetrant apPlicatiO

' If onlycertaincritical areas are to be inspected, application of the TURCO DY-CHE. PENETRANTcan be confined to these areas by spraying or brushing. However, if great numberof parts are to be inspected simultaneously, dip application of the TURCO DY-CHEKPENETRANT may prove more desirable.

If perforations are suspected of extending through the entire thicknes of the part, thebleed-through method may be employed. In this application of the DY-CHEKPENETRANT INSPECTION PROCESS, the DY-CHEK PENETRAT is applied toone surface of the part, and the developer is applied to the opposite urface. Flawswhich extend completely through the article are shown as red indicati }1Son the whitedeveloper background.

Under normal conditions, a penetrant dwell time of 10 minutes is sUilcient. Shorter

dwell times on the order of 1 to 5 minutes are generally adequate. he area beinginspected should be kept wet with penetrant during dwell time. AI ow the excesspenetrant to drain before removing. This procedure is normally perf°

3. APPLYING TURCO DY-CHEK REMOVER:

After the excess penetrant has drained from the parts, an emulsifie~ which rendersthe part water-washable is applied to the area that has been exposed to thepenetrant. Where the penetrant has been applied by dip opera~ion, it is alsoconvenient to apply the emulsifier by the immersion process.

4. RINSE:

Flush TURCO DY-CHEK REMOVER and emulsified penetrant frorrj the surface ofthe part with a stream or spray of water until the surface is free oi

Avoid over rinsing which may tend to remove penetrant from discontinuities.Inadequate rinsing and over-rinsing will become apparent with ex erience. Trialapplications will help establish proper rinse parameters.

5. DRYING:

Following rinsing, parts should be allowed to air dry or drying can b~ accelerated byplacing the wet parts in a drying oven at up to 82°C for a sufficient tif11e. Overly longdrying times should be avoided.

6. APPLYING TURCO DY-CHEK DEVELOPER:

The next step in the TURCO DY-CHEK PENETRANT process is th~ application ofTURCO DY-CHEK DEVELOPER. The Developer serves two purposes:

1. A fine"film of TURCO DY-CHEK DEVELOPER applied to the Ipart provides awhite contrasting background for the red TURCO DY-CHEK PENETRANT.

2. It draws the penetrant from flaws to the surface of the part where it can bereadily observed and evaluated.

Spray application of TURCO DY-CHEK DEVELOPER should be employed since themethod provides a thin, even coating, precluding laps and runs, and insures clearflaw indications. When spraying facilities using compressed air are not qvailable, a lighteven coating of developer may be applied by means of TURCO DY-CHEKDEVELOPER press spray aerosol containers. TURCO DY-CHEK DEVELOPERshould be applied in a spray booth or in a well ventilated area.

7. INSPECTION AND EVALUATION:I

As TURCO DY-CHEK DEVELOPER dries to a smooth, even white coating, redindications will appear at the location of defects. If the inspection ha'~been properlyperformed and no red indications appear, there are no surfacel discontinuitiespresent. Depth of discontinuities will be indicated by richness of the: red colour andspeedof bleed-out. : . .'

ISince red indications will remain visible until wiped off manually, there is not need torework defective parts immediately. If salvage is practical, defecti~e parts can bereworked with the location and extent of flaws still showing, thus, simRlifying accuraterepair. I

POST CLEANING: I

To remove residual penetrant following the process, it has been fq~nd that vapourdegreasing or a suitable solvent removal method is generally adiquate. Prior tovapour degreasing, remove developer residues by flushing with water applied byspray. Parts need to be dried before vapour degreasing. For critical cleanliness,such as that require for some aerospace applications, ultrasonic cle~ning techniqueshave been found to be satisfactory.
