Introduction
This is an introduction to two of the three TSI engines Volkswagen offers for the 2017 model year. This module includes details from when these engines were first launched in order to provide a comparison to previous engines.
• 1.8L TSI. This engine is based on the third-generation 2.0L TSI and is available on the 2017Jetta, Passat, Beetle, Beetle Convertible and Golf.
• 2.0L TSI. Boasting the latest tech, this third-generation design features Valve-Lift technologywhich helps provide a huge boost in torque andimproved fuel efficiency. This engine is available onthe GTI.
1.8L TSI Engine (EA888)
The 1.8L TSI engine replaced the outgoing 2.5L, naturally aspirated five-cylinder engine as the volume engine in the Volkswagen lineup. The 1.8L TSI offers the following advantages compared to the 2.5L.

Volkswagen Turbo Tech: 1.8L TSI and 2.0L TSIThe third-generation TSI engines offer more performance and greater fuel efficiency compared to the
previous design. Volkswagen engineers examined every component, from the oil pan to the
turbocharger, in search of greater efficiency.
The result is a family of engines that offer excellent low-end torque, near-instant throttle response and
lower emissions. Use the information in this iBook to own the turbo story with your customers.

Integrated Exhaust ManifoldPower, response and efficiency.
Both the 1.8 and 2.0 TSI engines feature a new
cylinder head design with an integrated exhaust
manifold.
This design helps the turbocharger build boost
quickly, giving a near-instant response to the
driver’s commands. The exhaust manifold is water
and oil cooled, which extends the turbocharger’s
life and improves efficiency.
This design also heats the engine coolant faster,
which allows for quicker interior heater response
in cold weather. The end result is a powerful,
responsive engine with the added benefit of a
comfortable interior.

Turbocharger
The EA888 engines feature a compact,
lightweight twin-scroll turbocharger that provides
excellent response and efficiency. The
compressor housing is die-cast aluminum for
reduced weight.
The turbine housing is a compact, cast steel
design that reduces weight and improves engine
response. The turbocharger is oil and water
cooled for improved efficiency and longevity.

Variable Valve Timing and Valve LiftThe Generation 3 TSI engines feature variable valve timing for improved performance and efficiency.
The 1.8L TSI engine in the 2015 Golf features variable valve timing on the intake valves, which provides improved engine response across the rpm range.
The 2.0L TSI engine in the 2017 GTI features variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust valves, and uses Valve Lift technology on the exhaust valves. The end result is increased torque, faster engine response across the entire rpm range and an impressive 50 lb.-ft. of torque boost over the 2014 and older models.

Electric Wastegate ActuatorThe Generation 3 EA888 TSI engine features an electric wastegate actuator that provides more precise
control over the boost generated by the turbocharger.
This allows for faster engine response and maximum torque at a lower engine speed. The electric
wastegate actuator also holds the wastegate open during warm-up to quickly heat the catalytic
converter and reduce start-up emissions.

Lightweight ConstructionThe EA888 engines feature several weight-reducing measures. Reducing weight improves efficiency and performance. In total, the new engine is 17.2 pounds lighter than the previous design:
• A thin-walled engine block reduces weight by5 pounds without compromising durability.
• The crankshaft features four counterweightsinstead of eight and smaller bearing diametersfor a 3.5-pound reduction.
• The cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifoldand die-cast aluminum compressor housing furtherreduce weight.
• Aluminum bolts are used throughout the engine, further reducing weight.
• The bottom section of the oil pan is made fromcomposite material.
