4 GUIDE TO NEW ENGLAND COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES | 2013

New England is where American higher

education began and where students and

leaders rom around the globe continue

to come or knowledge, creativity, innova-

tion and expertise. Many visitors to NewEngland arrive knowing just a handul o

amous New England colleges and universi-

ties, but leave awed by the breadth o the re-

    gions higher education institutions. Indeed,

it is the diversity o New Englands 250-plus

    campusespublic and private, two-year

and our-year, religious and secular, proes-

sional and liberal artsthat makes the re-

    gion world-class.

Its New England where colleges and uni-

    versities prepare students or occupations

that may not have existed when those stu-

dents frst stepped on campus, where re-

search labs spin o new companies and

    industries, and where vibrant campuses

energize their surrounding towns and cities.

New England colleges and universities edu-

cate over 960,000 students annually rom

around the globe, sending them orth as

    teachers, skilled medical technicians, entre-

preneurs, engineers, poets, and uture Nobel

laureates. It is a 2nd home to nearly

50,000 oreign students and over 12,000

scholars rom across the globe. Moreover,

many other students, rom every corner o

the world, access courses and degree pro-grams 24/7 rom New Englands colleges via

    online learning opportunities.

Collaboration and innovation are the prima-

ry roles o the New England Board o High-

er Education. Created in 1955, NEBHEs

mission is to expand, through interstate co-

    operation, the education opportunities and

services available to the regions residents,

with a ocus on college aordability, access,

    and success.

A prime example is NEBHEs Tuition

Break program, which provides a discount

on the out-o-state tuition students pay at

public colleges and universities in the other

New England states when they pursue spe-

    cialized majors.

More than 9,200 students take advantage o

this program every year, accessing over 750

    unique and cutting-edge academic degree

programs and saving $7,000, on average, each

year on their tuition bills. In 2012, students and

amilies saved $53 million dollars on tuition!

Established in 1957, Tuition Break has pro-

vided New England students and amilieswith over $1 billion in savings. And the six

states have saved untold millions o dollars

by avoiding duplication o programs already

available in other New England states. Learn

more about the program in this guide or visit

    our website at www.nebhe.org/tuitionbreak.

NEBHE thanks Boston magazine or the

opportunity to work together to produce

the 2013 Guide to Colleges and Universi-

ties. We trust it will be a valuable resource

connecting you with the regions wide ar-ray o colleges and opening doors or con-

    tinued learning, degree attainment, career

    advancement, and intellectual enrichment.

With such a rich diversity o institutions,

people and opportunities, its no wonder

New England is the worlds destination or

    higher education. Q

Michael K. Thomas is president and CEO of theNew England Board of Higher Education andpublisher of The New England Journal of HigherEducation. Email: [email protected].

    THE WORLDS DESTINATION

FOR HIGHER EDUCATIONIt is said that, New England is a state of mind. It is equally true that New England is a state ofmindsperhaps the most concentrated gathering of learners, professors, and higher education

    institutions in the entire world.

Tat can be a really helpul way to gain

greater ocus beore hitting the road, notes

Teresa Urist, Director o College Coun-

seling at Prospect Hill Academy charter

    school.

Visit schools and trust your gut, Urist

says. She notes that students are really

intuitive when it comes to determiningwhether a particular school will meet their

needs. While its critical to keep an open

mind in the process, it is also really impor-

tant to visit schools and trust your eelings

about them. I once had a mom call me,

highly upset, telling me that she had driven

two hours to take her daughter to see a col-

lege that I had recommended; her daugh-

ter didnt even get out o the car, notes

Urist. Her response: Well, we certainly got

    some good data, didnt we?

Danielle da Silva, Director o College Coun-

seling at Beaver Country Day School, com-

ments that exploration begins with active

engagement. alk to peoplein person or

in social media communities. I encourage

students to visit campuses (or their online

    equivalents) and have conversationsnot

just with the tour guide but with that guy

sitting on the quad reading. Ask people

or directions and see how they respond.

Eavesdrop in the dining halls. Sit in on a

class and aferward take a second to ask the

proessor to recount a avorite interaction

he or she has had with a student. People and

places are made up o stories: ake some

time to nd out what the colleges story is.

    USING

SOCIAL MEDIAStudents today can learn about colleges

through social media by joining Facebook

groups, watching Youube videos, and ol-

lowing witter eeds. Once a student con-

nects with a college through social media,

the college can then learn about the stu-

    dent too.

    Catherine C. Capolupo, Assistant Vice

    President, Undergraduate Admission

and Marketing at Simmons College, says

that the amount a college looks at a social

media prole varies by institution. While

a students academic record is rst and

    oremost in the decision-making process,

social media gives an opportunity or both

the student and the college to get to know

each other. Capolupo shares a ew strate-

gies or students when using social media:

When inviting attention through socialmedia, make sure that you are aware that

it is a public forum. Be appropriate, nice,

    and safety-conscious.

Be authentic. Capolupo notes that whena prospective student invites her to look

at a video, she does not expect it to be the

work of a 40-year-old professional. She

also advises to be conscientious about the

    comments, images, photos, and content

    associated with your online profile.

Use the social media experience to al-low colleges to get to know you. If a stu-

dent sends Capolupo an article she wrote

or a video clip she produced, Capolupo will

take the time to follow the link to get a bet-

    ter sense of the student.

When considering a college, join its so-cial media groups. Use these opportunities

to ask questions and get feedback from

    current students, families, and alumni.

Be careful with what you are posting andhow much personal information you are

    sharing online.

    PAYING FOR

COLLEGEUnless you have $250,000 saved or col-

lege, the frst thing you should look at

is your overall fnancial picture, notes

odd Fothergill, Strategies or College Inc.

Founder and CEO. He recommends that

ideally you start saving or college straight

    out o the maternity ward.

Jim Femia, president o Atlantic Invest-

ment Partners, agrees that planning is the

name o the game when developing a strat-

egy or fnancing your childs college edu-cation. ake the time to develop a plan or

paying or college. Dont fgure it out as you

go. You will miss out on opportunities by

not having a solid fnancial plan or paying

    or college, he says.

Femia underscores the importance o am-

ilies flling out the requisite paperwork

including the Free Application or Federal

Student Aid (FAFSA) even i they dont

expect to qualiy or fnancial aid. For one,

completing the FAFSA provides access to

programs like the popular low-interest ed-

eral Staord Loans and the Federal Work-

    Study Program.

A NUMBERS GAMEHow many colleges should a student apply

to? When asked i there is a magic num-

ber, da Silva responds, No. Nothing in

this process, sadly, is magic, or all our lives

would be so much easier! Fothergill sug-

gests targeting between six to eight colleges

that best ft the students profle.

It is important to be realistic about the

playing feld. Statistically the chances o

getting into a top college are limited given

the number o highly credentialed stu-

    dents, top athletes, international students,

    and political actors. Oentimes students

walk by a good opportunity blinded by the

glare o brand names, notes Fothergill.

Te most important thing is to be true to

yoursel and make sure you eel good about

being there. Students who all into the top

third o the typically admitted students are

    usually content, he adds.

Colleges will always look frst at a kids

transcript. Te other thing I oen tell kids

is be here now. I worry that the college

process has resulted in students turning

into little human checklists as they try to

position themselves or admission to selec-

tive schools. Teres a lot o unnecessary

stress in this process as kids run them-

selves ragged in an eort to cover all the

bases they think they need to cover to be

    competitive, says Urist.

We invite you to peruse the 2013 Guide to

    New England Colleges and Universities.

Use it to orm your own kaleidoscope o

patterns to shape your vision or your col-

    lege journey. Q
