Welcome, thanks for coming to “Hairspray, the Broadway Musical.” We are so pleased to be able to bring you this wonderfully fun piece of musical theater with a great message of inclusion. It is important, especially in this rhetoric-filled political season, to remind ourselves from where we came and continue the battle. It’s been a challenge to assemble the needed ethnically-diverse cast, and more ethnic participation would have been welcome, but what fun it has been. I hope you enjoy the performance of these wonderful volunteer cast and crew members, and I hope you will consider being in a future ACT production. As I always say to the each cast and crew, “we can’t do it without you.” We always need people who will volunteer and make the commitment to make each community theater production happen. So, I hope you as an audience will look at participating, not only from your seat in the house but, as actors and technicians in one of our future productions. Please come and “get into the ACT.” I’m so happy to welcome all our new volunteers in their first ACT production.

I want to thank them and you for supporting your community theater.

If you haven’t had the opportunity, I encourage you to take in the productions at Storybook Land Theatre this summer. You’ll find this season’s show schedule on page 14 of this program.

If you haven’t made a contribution yet this year, we could really use your help. If you have, thank you, but I hope you will consider an additional gift this year. Along with a new air conditioner, it is time for a new roof on the theater portion of this facility. Between a new air conditioner and a new roof we need to raise $50,000 more than usual for this season’s facility repairs. It’s not glamourous but it’s really necessary. We need to protect our investment in this historic Capitol Theatre facility. I hope you will help. Please see the back page of the program for additional tax deductible contribution information. Wonderful ideas for musicals can come from the strangest places. In the past couple of summers, ACT has produced musicals based on a horror B movie and a children's animated film. And now comes HAIRSPRAY which began as a minor film success in 1988 by Baltimore fringe filmmaker John Waters. Its sweet story of a chubby girl's quest for acceptance has her finding it and integrating a Baltimore teen show in the process. This ‘little movie that could’ found its way to Broadway in 2002, Hollywood in 2007 and now to Aberdeen.

This is a perfect fairy tale for our times, too. Tracy Turnblad is everything that represents

an antidote to skinny models and perfect bodies. She's like all of us, and has dreams to match her size. Aided by a loving mother and father, she changes her small corner of Baltimore and all that come into contact with her. Tracy embraces life and its possibilities and shows us what a powerful thing hope can be. Integration was not as simple as this show would suggest, but what a beautiful world it would be - making room for everyone's dreams, bringing us closer together. Sure, it's a fantasy, but singing and dancing our way to a better world- now that's a wonderful idea.

WCHRIS ANDERSON (Wilbur Turnblad) Chris has been involved in theater since the 1980s and has been an ACT regular since “Spamalot” in 2012. He was last seen as Santa Claus in “A Christmas Story” in 2015. Chris would like to thank his wife, Jennifer, and their two sons, Jake and Brock, for their love and support of his acting habit.

KATI BACHMAYER (Prudy Pingleton/Asst. Choreographer) Kati is an Aberdeen native and ACT regular (most recently awarded 2015 Performer of the Year). She works at the Aberdeen Development Corporation and serves on the Aberdeen Area Arts Council and Housing Authority boards. In 2015, Kati was seen onstage in “A Christmas Story,” “Shrek the Musical” and “Working.“

PAULA NICOLE BERNADINO (Detention Kid) started her passion for the arts at the age of 4 doing ballet, school plays and musical band. She is currently paving her way through college as an aviation student. Further fulfilling her dreams, she’s now in Aberdeen, SD.

NATALIE BOLLINGER (Shelly) graduated recently from Central High School. She’s been very active in the shows there including the last show “Anything Goes” as Hope Harcount. She’ll be attending Ball State University in Muncie, IN for musical theatre.

KAITLIN BUCHHOLZ (LouAnn) is a Tripp native and a recent NSU graduate. She received her Bachelors of Music Arts degree in May and is currently working for Overhead Door. Her most recent appearance at ACT was as Kitty in “Pride and Prejudice.” She also appearered in many productions at NSU such as “Legally Blonde,” “Les Miserables,” and “On the Verge.”

WHITNEY (EWINGER) BUCHANAN (Baltimorite/Mom/Homeless Woman/Matron) Whitney is the daughter of Curt and Susie Ewinger and has lived in Aberdeen her whole life. She is married to her wonderful husband John and has two pretty awesome boys, Jack and Charlie. She enjoys reading, refereeing roller derby and being a part of the ACT family.

CHRIS CASSENS (Sketch) will be a junior at Falkton High School. He made his musical theater debut in 2014 as Gavroche in NSU’s production of “Les Misérables.” Since then he has participated in Oral Interpretation, One-Act Plays, and All-School plays. He is excited about his ACT debut.

MADDIE COMSTOCK (Lorraine/Pinkie) will be a sophomore at CHS this year. She is involved in show choir, dance and orchestra. She is very excited to share the stage with her dad!

MARK COMSTOCK (Edna Turnblad) lives and works in Aberdeen. He is a ’94 voice major from NSU. He’s married to Angie and they have two girls, Maddie and Carly.

ELI CORBETT (Corny Collins) as a fresh graduate from NSU, Eli is thrilled to be returning to the ACT stage. Past ACT credits include the old man in “A Christmas Story: The Musical,” Bob Wallace in Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” and Igor in “Young Frankenstein.” He hopes you enjoy the show and invites you to come say hi backstage afterwards.

EMILY SUSANNAH DAVIS (Dynamite/Baltimorite/Mother) is a recent graduate of NSU with a BA in Music, a BA in musical theatre, and a certificate in Arts Administration. She is grateful for the opportunity to do another show at ACT before starting grad school auditions.

SYMMONE GAUER (Little Inez) is going to be a junior at Aberdeen Central. She has been in theater for several years and has done musicals at Central like “High School Musical” and “Anything Goes.” She sang in this year’s Regional Honors Choir and is a drama club officer at Central.

BRANDON HEIM (Stooie/Guard) is a local magician and hopes to become a filmmaker once out of high school. He enjoys writing, acting and gaming and is really excited about this play.

SARAH HONERMAN (Penny Pingleton) is a theater and English teacher at Groton Area High School. She graduated from NSU in 2013 and has enjoyed being involved with theater since high school. She would like to dedicate this performance to her loving husband, Seth, and her seven-month-old daughter, Robyn.

CHRIS JACOBSON (Harriman F. Spritzer) is excited about performing in his first ACT production. He graduated from Central High School in 2011 and, most recently, from SDSU with Music Education in 2015. Chris has just finished his first year as the Assistant Choral Director and Vocal Jazz Director at Central High School. He is excited to perform for you and hopes you enjoy the show.

JAYLA JONES (Detention Kid) makes her debut on this stage. Having never performed before, she has really enjoyed the experience. She is a seventh grade student at Simmons Middle School and enjoys singing and dancing. She hopes to learn more about acting in future shows.

KEVIA JONES (Detention Kid) is excited to be making her musical debut in this production. She is a sophomore at Central High School. She enjoys art and music. Upon graduation, Kevia hopes to attend the Academy of Art in San Francisco.

WTAYLOR JONES (Detention Kid) is extremely proud to be joining the cast of “Hairspray.” Taylor is from Houston, TX and is currently here in Aberdeen attending Simmons Middle School as a sixth grader. She loves math and science.

LISA KANIZAR (Baltimorite/Council Mom/Pinkies) This is Lisa’s third show with ACT. She would like to thank ACT for another amazing opportunity and her husband, family and friends for all their support.

THOMAS KRUEGER (Link Larkin) is excited to make his adult debut with ACT. He has appeared in many YPT, SBLT and Aberdeen Central Theatre productions. He last appeared in Central’s production of “Anything Goes” as Billy Crocker. He will be attending the University of Missouri next fall majoring in Business Marketing.

TYLER LANAM (Brad) is a Rapid City, SD native and this is his 4th appearance at ACT, with his most recent appearance as Mr. Darcy in ACT’s “Pride and Prejudice,” He is now a senior at NSU majoring in Musical Theatre.

MAX LANGBEHN (Seaweed J. Stubbs) goes to Aberdeen Central High School where he does many activities such as Show Choir, Oral Interp, plays and musicals, drama club, and marching band. He is very excited to be a part of ACT’s production of “Hairspray” and be taking on his favorite role in this musical. He considers it a huge honor for him. He hopes you enjoy the show.

DERYN LEWIS (Dynamite/Ensemble) just completed her freshman year at CHS. She has been involved in many musical groups including show choir, jazz band, the NSU Civic Symphony and others. She was also in the productions of “Harvey” and “Anything Goes” at CHS. She plans to pursue a career in acting, singing, and/or composing.

LIZ LEWNO (Tracy Turnblad) is a returning Aberdeen native who is happy to be back and playing Tracy in one of her favorite shows and at her favorite theater. She has been in countless YPT productions as well as an SBLT cast member for four years. When she is not at ACT, she is either working or spending time with friends and family.

RYAN MARNETTE (IQ) currently attends Roncalli High School. He likes to play video games in his free time and has had a blast rehearsing this play with the rest of the cast.

DANICA MICKELSON (Tammy/Dynamite) is a senior at NSU majoring in Instrumental and Vocal Music Education from Miller, SD. “Hairspray” is her first main stage production. When she is not rehearsing, she enjoys spending time with her husband and dog.

ANTHONY MORRISSEY (Baltimorite/Ensemble/Blind man) is the music coordinator at the ARCC as well as a substitute teacher. Anthony has been a pit member for several musicals but this is his first time on stage for a musical. He is very happy to be sharing this experience with his daughter, Hayden.

HAYDEN MORRISSEY (Brenda/Dynamite) has been in multiple YPT and high school productions. She is going to be a senior at Central High and she will be working at the ARCC as a dance assistant.

TYLER NEWTON (The Drunk/Detention Kid/Riot Police/Security Guard) is from Jamestown, ND and this is his first show at ACT. This fall he will be a sophomore at NSU majoring in History Education. He hopes you enjoy the show.

MAYLYNN NGIRAILEMESANG (Motormouth Maybelle) is from an island in the Pacific Region called Republic of Palau. She and her son, Jabez, moved to Aberdeen in 2011. She works for Banner Engineering and is a part-time student at Presentation College. Aberdeen has become their second home away from home and they love it here.

KENDRA OSBORNE (Outsider) is delighted to be making her debut at ACT. She will be a freshman at Ipswich High School and has been involved with Ipswich Drama Club, Living Art Dance and Honors Performance at Carnegie Hall. She hopes to continue to be involved at ACT.

KELSEY PAPKE (Gym Teacher/Ensemble) graduated from NSU in 2011 with a BA in Musical Theatre. She is very proud to be a part of the ACT community and her sixth production total. When she is not on stage, she spends time with her husband Cody and their three dogs.

CHRIS RINKENBERGER (Mr. Pinky/Ensemble) is excited for his 5th show at ACT. He is currently working as a Manager at Lager’s Inn in Aberdeen. He graduated from Presentation College and hopes to complete his Masters in Counseling in the next few years.


LEVI SEEFELDT (Pinky/Adult Ensemble/Riot Police/Detention Kid) is excited to perform in his second show at ACT. He has just completed his fourth year at NSU, where he studies Advertising Design with minors in Music and Entrepreneurial Studies. For his whole life he has had an affinity for performance and was active in Oral Interp, One-Acts and theater.

CLAIRE VETTER (Amber Von Tussle) is going to be a junior at Aberdeen Central High School. She has been involved in Show Choir, Marching Band, Vocal Jazz, A Capella Choir and six high school productions, finishing off as Erma Latour in “Anything Goes.” She will participating in her first year as a cast member of SBLT.

JENNIFER WADDLE (Velma Von Tussle) is excited to return to the stage in her first ACT role since 2009. Offstage, Jennifer is mom to twins, Ava & Jackson and toddler, Eden. She is a teacher of art and music in Warner, SD. Her theatrical highlights include a long list of productions at NSU, Northern Fort Playhouse, ACT, Pierre Players & the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, MN where she was lucky enough to meet living legend of musical theater, Stephen Sondheim.

BRENDA WEISHAAR (Baltimorite/Council Mom/Pinkies) An Aberdeen native, Brenda made her ACT debut in “Peter Pan.” Most recently she was onstage as the Ugly Duckling in “Shrek” and the ensembles of “White Christmas” and “Spamalot.” She is excited to perform with this talented cast, orchestra and crew.

TYLER BECK (Guitar) is an NSU junior from Leola who plays guitar in Jet Lagged and upright bass at Northern. He always looks forward to playing guitar and is excited to join the pit for the first time.

ANDREW GRANDPRE (Electric Bass Guitar) is a professional music educator, composer and performing musician. He is currently the 5-12 Music Specialist at Aberdeen Christian School and the Music Director at First Baptist Church. He is married to his lovely wife, Charlotte, and they have an 8-month-old daughter, Finley.

TAYLOR JOHNSON (Misc. Percussion) has played in the pit orchestra for several ACT and NSU productions. He was last heard at ACT playing bass guitar in 2014’s production of “Little Shop of Horrors.”

GREGG MAGERA (Violin) is an attorney/partner with the Siegel, Barnett & Schutz law firm. He has enjoyed playing in the pit for many summer musicals when not playing tennis. He is married to Barbara, and they have two daughters, Katie and Emily. Break a leg, cast, crew and pit.

MARY MARION (Music Director/keyboard 1) has served as musical director for ACT’s musicals for the past 20 years. She retired after working as a music specialist in the Aberdeen Public Schools, and stays busy accompanying at NSU and teaching piano. Mary is married to her “leading man,” Mark.

BETH NEITZERT (Violin 1) is the orchestra teacher at Holgate and Simmons middle schools. She is also the concertmaster of the Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony. Beth also plays in orchestras in Brookings and Mitchell. Lastly, she is a violinist in the newly founded NSU String Quartet.

MISSY NGUYEN (Keyboard 2) has played in the pit for previous ACT shows “Grease” and “Anything Goes.” She has been on stage in “Chicago” as a chorus/ensemble member. Missy enjoys teaching vocal music, playing at church, and accompanying two local men’s choruses. She enjoys spending her free time with her husband Koos and their two dogs, Rufus and Riley.

JIM PANERIO (Drums/Percussion) has been teaching music in Aberdeen since 1993. He currently teaches band and general music at Simmons Middle School, and for 14 years taught percussion at NSU. He and wife Debbie have two sons. He has been involved with ACT’s last five summer musicals.

NICK RIES (trumpet) is a junior studying music education at NSU. He is a member of numerous ensembles on campus including the University/Civic Symphony Orchestra, the Marching Wolves and NSU’s top jazz ensemble, for which he plays lead trumpet. He has played in the pit for NSU’s production of “Les Miserables” (2014), Roncalli High School’s production of “Oklahoma!” (2014) and ACT and NSU’s production of “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.”

TANNER SCHABOT-SHULTIS (percussion) is from Aberdeen and a freshman studying music education and a history at Northern State University. This is the sixth theater production he has been a part of.

JEREMY SCHUTTER (Trombone) Jeremy lives in Aberdeen with his wife, Nicole, and his daughters, Masyn and Kaelyn. He is the head band director at Central High School. Jeremy has played in several other shows including “Chicago,” “Shrek,” and “A Christmas Story.” In his free time, Jeremy likes spending time with his family, walking his dogs, and being outdoors.

JAMIE STADEL (Reed 1) Jamie Stadel graduated this spring from NSU with a degree in Instrumental Music Education. She will be teaching band and orchestra in the Sioux Falls school district this fall. She has played in numerous pits for ACT including: “A Christmas Story,” “Shrek,” and “White Christmas.”

ORCHESTRA


SARA WEISCHEDEL (Conductor) was born and raised in Aberdeen. She lives with her husband, Wayne, and kids, Cadence and Drake. She teaches band at Holgate Middle School, plays in the municipal band and is excited to be a part of this show!

ANNA BRANTLEY (Tech Assistant) is a senior Theatre major at HSU in Arkadelphia, AR. She is from Pine Bluff, AR. This will be her 21st production to be involved in. Anna is the summer intern here at ACT and refers to herself as the “Paint Goddess.”

SABRINA MOUNT (Stage Manager) is an Aberdeen native and theater has always been close to her heart. She has been involved in many YPT productions and has always had an interest in the behind the scenes aspect of a production. She is grateful to be the stage manager of this production and is thankful to her family and friends for their support.

LUCAS MURRAY (Technical Assistant) is the new Assistant Tech Director at ACT. Lucas comes with a background in music and theater. He is a graduate of SDSU. He is a proud father of four children and loves encouraging the next generation of theater enthusiasts. Lucas considers it a great honor to be a part of ACT and the Capitol Theatre.

BRIAN T. SCHULTZ (ACT technical director/sound designer) resides in Aberdeen with wife, Juli, and two daughters. He is also ACT’s education director and SBLT’s director. Schultz received Best Supporting Actor at the AACT 2009 national festival for his role as Russ Renner in ACT’s “How to Talk Minnesotan: The Musical” and Comprehensive Creativity in the 2013 AACT Region V festival for his work on “The Top Job!” After winning first place in the 2015 South Dakota State Chili Cook-Off in August, he competed in the World Chili Cook-Off in Reno, NV last fall.

MICHAEL SKYLES (Sound Board Operator) has been a faculty member at Northern State University since 2009, teaching private voice, diction, and vocal pedagogy, as well as serving as the vocal and music director for musical theater activities. An avid soloist, Michael has sung all over the United States for many professional opera companies, orchestras and choruses, including Cleveland Opera, the Chicago Symphony and Music of the Baroque.

NELLA THOMPSON (Costuming) cannot remember a time when she did not have some type of needle in her hand. Sewing, knitting, crocheting, and cross-stitch are just a few of her needle interests. Nella has enjoyed stitching since receiving sewing cards for her third birthday. She has been sewing costumes with ACT for 22 years. Nella takes pleasure in contributing to the Aberdeen Community which she terms “Little Town on the Prairie” with her sewing skills.

PAIGE WALTH (Assistant Director) just finished her first year of college at MSUM with a degree in Theatre; emphasis in Tech. She has been involved in various aspects of theater, acting, and tech since 2007. She is ecstatic to be back as a Storybook Land Theatre cast member for the fourth time.

JAMES L. WALKER (ACT artistic/managing director) is an Aberdeen native. He has acted, directed and adjudicated professionally for more than 35 years and has been ACT’s artistic/managing director for 31 years. He has earned numerous directing and scenic design awards. Jim was appointed by the governor to the South Dakota Arts Council in 2008 and currently serves as chair. Jim is also a member of the national board of directors of the American Association of Community Theatre and is the National Festival Commission Chair. Last June, he received the prestigious AACT Fellow Award.

ROB WILLIAMS (Props Master) studied theater at the University of Arkansas with an emphasis in Directing and Design. He now lives in Langford with his wife Heather, and does his best to raise their kids and a dachshund. He’d like to thank ACT and Dan Yurgaitis for the opportunity to be involved with theater once again..

LARRY WILD (light design/light board operator) was technical director for ACT’s “Annie Get Your Gun” (1980) and is Assistant Professor Emeritus of Theater at NSU, where he taught for 32 years. He and his family have been involved with ACT many times.

DANIEL YURGAITIS (director) is director of theater at NSU and has directed companies across the country. He choreographed ACT’s “Honk!”, earning him Outstanding Achievement-Choreography awards at the state, regional and national 2007 AACT festivals and international recognition in Japan in 2008. He was selected NSU’s Faculty of the Year in 2012.

Production Volunteer Opportunities

ACTING: onstage roles.

STAGE MANAGEMENT: aid the director during rehearsal and oversee backstage activities during performances.

COSTUMES: construct costumes according to direction of costume designer (sewing not required).

PROPS: gather, construct and organize properties for productions.

SET CONSTRUCTION: build and/or paint set according to direction of set designer.

LIGHTS: operate light board during performances.

SOUND: operate sound board during performances.

BOX OFFICE: sell tickets to performances and film events.

HOUSE MANAGING: oversee ushers seating patrons, set up concessions.

USHERING: seat patrons before performances.

Non-Production Volunteer Opportunities

BOX OFFICE ACT’s box office prior to a show’s opening is Riddle’s Jewelry in the Aberdeen Mall. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m and Sunday, 12-6 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in person at Riddle’s Jewelry or by mail to ACT. The Capitol Box office is also open one hour prior to performances. Tickets can also be purchased online at AberdeenCommunityTheatre.com.

PERFORMANCES ACT maintains a firm policy of not canceling any performance due to weather. We urge all ticket holders to make every effort to attend. In the event that travel proves impossible at performance time, ticket holders may inquire at ACT’s office the next business day. ACT will make alternative arrangements, excluding refund, when possible.

ACCESSIBILITY Wheelchair seating arrangements should be made by informing ACT at the time of ticket purchase.

ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES The Capitol Theatre is now equipped with a Hearing Loop system, which transmits sound to hearing aids with T-coils. Those without hearing aids or without T-coils may check out an assistive listening device. Ask an usher for details or go to the Jane West Gallery to check one out. You will need a driver’s license or credit card to leave as a deposit. Devices must be returned immediately after the show.

VOLUNTEERING ACT welcomes all volunteers. Your involvement in set construction, costume making, ushering or fund raising projects will mean a great deal to us and can be fun and rewarding for you. If you can hammer, sew, paint, saw, embroider, type, glue, help gather props or enjoy working with kids, please volunteer now.

GROUP RATES Special rates are offered for groups of 12 or more at time of ticket purchase for all shows.

TOURS To schedule a Capitol Theatre and behind-the-scenes tour for your group, please call at least two weeks prior to requested date.

FILM PROGRAM Capitol Cinema shows a wide variety of films in Theatre B at the Capitol Theatre at 7 p.m. nightly year-round.
