General Knowledge Competitions
We wish all our children, parents and staff a very happy Easter and a restful holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone in the Summer term which starts for staff on Friday 26th April and for children on Monday 29th April.
Friday morning was an opportunity for our public speakers to compete in the annual House Public Speaking competition.House teams consisted of three members who each spoke on their chosen topic for two minutes before facing two questions: one from the panel of three judges and one from the floor. Speakers were judged on the content of their speech, the clarity of their presentation, engagement with the audience, ability to think on their feet and answer questions and their timing (they were penalised for going too much under or over the two minute mark). As well as teams competing for the House Shield, a prize was awarded for the best individual speaker.Judges had a very tough job but in the end the winning house was Kingsley (Poppy, Thomas and Sam) and the top three individual speakers were
1. Poppy (Year 8) 2. Immi (Year 6) 3. Thomas (Year 7) Continued on page 7
Many congratulations to Poppy Everest who has been awarded another academic scholarship, this time for Cranleigh School. This brings the number of scholarships offered to Yateley Manor pupils this year to twenty, another bumper year. Well done to them all.

A few reminders about summer uniform: Summer uniform for girls is the regulation summer dress with white socks. Boys may wear grey shorts and grey short socks. If they would like to be in short sleeves then they will need to wear proper short sleeved shirts. Long sleeves rolled up are not acceptable, so children wearing long sleeves will have to keep them rolled down. Boys are also expected to wear their ties in school unless given specific permission by the class teacher to take them off; they are allowed to take them off when outside at break times. Blazers should be worn as usual unless children have permission to take them off.Pupils should not wear sports socks when in uniform .Summer uniform is not compulsory until the second half of the summer term but may be worn earlier.

In Pursuit of TriviaRobert Upton’s latest blog can be found on the School website. The following is a taster:
It seemed such a simple game. Even the name suggested it was easy. A wheel and six “pieces of pizza” to collect. Just answer a few questions and you were away. Yet, Trivial Pursuit always brought a certain amount of anxiety to me when it was revealed every Christmas at the table. Try as I might I just did not have the ability to answer many questions. As I have grown older, so has my inability to answer general knowledge questions. You really do not want me on your quiz team!

Thomas Smith (4ALT) who, after just one term in the silver squad, has been selected for Rushmore Royals Academy Gold Swimming Squad. Well done Thomas.
During Science week, children in Prep were given an opportunity to make a science poster around the theme of Journeys. There were over a hundred completed posters and the children came up with creative and scientifically interesting topics including the migrations of butterflies, caribou, birds and salmon, the journey of anaesthesia, the human journey and the journey of plastics, to name but a few.
After much deliberation, five posters were chosen to be our entries into the British Science Association competition. The successful posters were created by Edward Harding, Honor Middleton, Matteo Drago, Eleni Malandrinos and Maisie Rice and were on the topics of salmon migration, the journey of a red blood cell, the journey of diseases in the second world war, the journey of a star and the journey of food through the digestive system. The posters were sent off to London this week and we hope to hear how they have fared sometime during the summer term.
British Science Association Poster Competition
Hopefully next term will bring us some warmer weather. During sunny weather we strongly recommend that all pupils take measures to protect themselves against exposure to the strong rays of the sun.
Hats should be worn for sport or play and a good spread of colourless sun cream should be applied before the children come to school. Children may bring their own sunscreen to school in a named bottle inside a clear plastic bag. For children in Nursery to Year 4 these should be handed to their form tutor. Children in Years 5 to 8 should give them to Matron.
The school shop stocks a variety of hats. Please note that pupils will not be allowed into school wearing the brightly coloured zinc sun cream favoured by cricketers!
Sun Safety
FYMS Mufti Day - Friday 3rd MayChildren may come to school on Friday 3rd May dressed in their own clothes. In exchange FYMS ask that you donate a gift towards the May Fair tombolas. Details of these gifts can be found in the FYMS article on page 5.
Members of FYMS will be at the door to Manor Court, Pre-Prep and the Nursery on the day to collect these gifts.
Please note that children should be dressed appropriately for school: Girls’ tops should be full length and all skirts, shorts and trousers must be of a sensible length. Footwear should also be sensible. Please no team tops, no jewellery (for health and safety reasons) and no hair colouring, make up or face paint.
Elections for these Prep School Committees will take place on the first Thursday of next term.
Pupils from Years 3 to 6 who would like to stand for election to one of the Committees and have not represented their year group on any of the committees before should let their Head of Year know by the end of school on the first Tuesday of term.
School Council, Sports Council and Food Committee Elections
On Tuesday, we held our Spring Concert in the Fyson Blum Hall for all childen in Years 7 and 8 and ensembles. The groups that took part included Senior Manor Singers, Intermediate Strings, Senior Strings, Chamber Choir, the Percussion Group, the Ukulele Group, Manor Harmonix, Miss Callan’s
Dance Troupe and Manor Rocks. They all performed with energy and enthusiasm providing a great evening of entertainment.
Year 7 and 8 presented their History of the Houses Music and IT Projects. The children created house chants using GarageBand as a compositional tool. Once the compositions were created, they removed the technology and performed their work as vocal performances. In addition, the Year 8 children created emblems on the computer for each house based on the history of the houses.
The evening culminated in a performance by Year 7 and 8 children of Madness’ “Our House”. An entertaining performance that finished off a superb evening celebrating music.
Thank you to our Director of Music, Jennifer Hustler, all the peripatetic staff who prepared children, Miss Callan and Miss Collins for the choreography, our Year 8 tech crew and all other members of the Yateley Manor community for their help and support.
Well done to Years 7 and 8 and to all the musicians and singers who took part in the concert.

FYMS May FairEaster is not quite here is so it might be hard to believe that the Yateley Manor May Fair is just over a month away. Make sure that the date is in your diaries – Saturday 18th May from 12.00 noon until 3.00pm for a fun-filled afternoon for all the family. Here is everything that you need to know about this fantastic family event:
Tokens The majority of stalls will be run by year groups at the school. To make everything run smoothly most stalls will take tokens rather than money on the day. You can purchase your tokens from the FYMS stall on the day or, if you want to be super organised, you will soon be able to pre-order your tokens directly from the FYMS page on the school website.
Activities We will have lots of activities happening throughout the afternoon, from pony rides to rollercoasters, bouncy castles and slides to the climbing wall, there will be plenty to keep children of all ages entertained. Our food tent will be serving hot dogs while those of you with more of a sweet tooth can enjoy all that our cake stall has to offer and our drinks tent will be offering beer, wine and prosecco to enjoy in the (fingers crossed) sunshine.
VolunteersWe desperately need volunteers to make the May Fair work, thank you to the few people that have already volunteered, but we need plenty more – any mums, dads, grandparents, friends that can spare an hour or two on our food stalls, beer tent or help set up or clear up please email: [email protected]
Get involved If you can not help on the day, there are plenty of other ways you can help such as donating cakes for our tea stall (please note that donations must be nut free) or prizes for our raffle – please email [email protected] if you can help in any way.
FYMS invite children to come to school on Friday 3rd May (the first Friday of the summer term) in their own clothes in support of the May Fair. In exchange they request that children donate a prize for the May Fair as follows:
• Pre-Prep and Nursery are asked to donate small plastic toys such as hoops, water guns, frisbees etc
• Year 5 wil be asked to donate jam jars filled with sweets (more information about this will be sent home)
• Years 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 will be asked to bring a bottle for the adult tombola
FYMS will be at the school doors in Manor Court, Pre-Prep and the Nursery at the start of the day on 3rd May to collect these donations.
Please see the article on page 4 for dress guidelines.

It was an exciting morning full of interesting and thought-provoking speeches on a range of fascinating subjects. The children spoke with poise and confidence in front of a large audience; one that was an especially daunting audience as it was made up of their peers! All the speakers deserve many congratulations!
Thank you very much to our judges; Tracy Squirrell (Governor), Martin Norbury (parent) and Kat Vaughan (St Peter’s Church Youth and Community Worker) for generously giving their time and for their expertise.
Below is a list of all twelve speakers and their chosen titles.

Please note that boys and girls do not need to have their own cricket equipment for the cricket season. The school will provide all that is necessary. Many children, however, do like their own equipment and this is up to parents. The school white polo shirt is required for lessons and can be used for cricket, athletics and tennis. Trainers can be used for cricket matches, but must be mainly white. Proper cricket shoes are ideal but not compulsory. Cricket spikes are not allowed on our astro wicket.
Boys and girls in Year 5 upwards who are playing hard ball cricket must wear the school cricket shirt for matches which is available from the school shop. White cricket trousers are also needed for A and B matches.
Kit for Incrediball cricket for boys and girls will consist of white polo shirt, blue shorts or skorts and white socks.
U8 and U9s (Years 3 and 4) can also wear their white polo shirts and blue shorts for matches.
No club kit is allowed in school matches. School cricket jumpers and cricket hats are also available from the school shop.
There are still spaces on the Cricket Week during Easter (23rd - 25th April) which is a great way for children to prepare for the coming season. On-line booking for the cricket week is open.

Tenner Challenge
Yateley Manor ScarecrowThe Yateley Manor scarecrow is now in place watching the car park through the window in School Reception. The design, of Henry VIII, was suggested by Oliver Keetch.
Henry VIII is part of Yateley Town’s annual scarecrow hunt which will run from Monday 8th April to Sunday 14th April.
If you would like to take part in the hunt maps will be on sale for £2.50 from Café 46 and Discoveries from Monday 8th April until Saturday 13th April. Scarecrows will be displayed around the town for children to find until Sunday 14th April. Completed maps can then be exchanged in the shops for a prize.
All profits from this fun activity will support the St Peter’s Community Hub Project.
Well done to both our Tenner Challenge Teams: Team Ruler and Team Mothers’ Little Helpers. The ventures of both the teams have been very successful and popular with the other children.
The teams impressed with their ideas and creativity and also for their hardwork and dedication.
The teams are currently calculating their takings and their profits and the final results will be announced after Easter.
Both teams will be entered into the national Tenner Challenge competiton and we look forward to hearing how they have done.
