DEAKIN UNIVERSITY RESEARCH PROJECT
As you may know we are currently working with Deakin University on a ‘Mathematical Reasoning
Research Project’. The project is a follow-up study of “Primary school teachers’ and students’
perceptions and understanding of mathematical reasoning”, and is under the direction of Dr Sandra
Herbert. We first participated in this study in 2012-2013. In the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics
includes reasoning as one of the proficiencies that students are expected to learn and develop
throughout the primary and secondary years of schooling but it is often a neglected aspect of planning
and implementation. The aim of this project is to further investigate teachers’ knowledge of reasoning
and its relationship to learning mathematics and other mathematics proficiencies, their approach to
planning and teaching reasoning and how their knowledge develops through participation in
collaborative planning, teaching and reflection of a mathematics lesson. For this study we have
targeted our Year1/2 Department and our Year 5/6 Department. The team of teacher participants from
our school will meet to plan at least one lesson with a mathematics reasoning learning objective, with
input from Dr Herbert. Each teacher will then teach the lesson and one peer teacher from the team will
observe this lesson to gather observations of children’s reasoning and teacher actions that promote
reasoning. Once again we thank Dr Herbert and Deakin University for including us in this project.
STUDENT LEADERS’ PROJECT UPDATE
Just a quick update regarding the ‘Student Leaders’ Beach Erosion Action Project’ at South Beach! So
far our student leaders have:
Identified beach erosion at Pea Soup
Practiced some beach monitoring at East Beach
Joined the Port Fairy Coastal Group as junior members
The next steps include:
Research and then suggest a good engineering erosion prevention solution at South Beach
Project manage the identified ‘South Beach Erosion Engineering Project”
Monitor, review and feedback after project completion
Perhaps set up a monitoring post at south beach
On the evening of Wednesday, July 22, the student leaders will present their project at a celebration in
Warrnambool. Many thanks to Ebony Perrin for her support of this program.
ROTARY CLUB OF PORT FAIRY SHOWCASE EVENING
Last Monday, June 1, all of our Year 6 public speaking team and our senior choir members performed for the Port Fairy Rotary Club. This event once again provided a great opportunity to showcase the many talents of our students to the local community. Thank you to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program for supplying the meal and the Rotary Club of Port Fairy for their ongoing support of the young people in Port Fairy. SCHOOL DISCO
Don’t forget we will be hosting a ‘School Disco’ on Friday, June 12, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, in the
school hall. The cost will be $5 per child (this includes fresh fruit, a bag of potato chips a lolly and a
bottle of water). All children must be signed in and out by an adult. There will be NO pass outs. There is
NO dress theme. All children are encouraged to pay their $5 to the office before the event. Dion from
Directwear will be the DJ. It would be great to see as many of our students there as possible!
CROSS COUNTRY
Thanks to all of the students who represented our school in the Divisional Cross Country, last Friday in
Warrnambool. Some sterling performances in trying conditions, many hills and windy wet conditions!
Congratulations to Max Green who has progressed to the Regional Championships! Thank you once
again to Deanne Elliot for her coordination of the Moyne District and to the parents for their ongoing
support.

can help set-up, I will meet you at the school at 1pm on Sunday.
PUPIL FREE DAY Please remember that Friday, June 26, will be a pupil free day. On this day the teachers will be available for ‘Parent Teacher Interviews’. REPORTING ON STUDENT PROGRESS 2015
This year our reporting on student progress will once again be three fold.
Student Written Reports. Issued to all students on Monday, June 22
Traditional Parent/Teacher Conferences. At this event parents/carers will have the
opportunity to spend time with the classroom teachers to discuss student progress and
student written reports. To be held on Thursday, June 25 and Friday, June 26 (pupil free)
Student Led Conferences. At this event each student will have the opportunity to present to
their parents/carers with regard to what has been happening at school this year. These
conferences will take about 15 minutes and they will take place in classrooms. These will be
held on Tuesday, July 28 and Wednesday, July 29 (4pm – 7pm)
We would appreciate your attendance at these reporting opportunities. Interview bookings currently open. DRESS UP DAY
Please remember our student leaders’ ‘Annual Dress up Day’, on Friday, June 19. The theme is ‘I want
to be….’ We encourage all students to dress up on this day as somebody or something they would
like to be when they get older. There will also be a sausage sizzle on this day. Mark your calendars.
FAMILY NUMERACY PROBLEM
Don’t forget to ‘have a go’ at our weekly ‘Numeracy Problem’ in today’s newsletter. Congratulations
to Bailey Else for his successful entry last week!
BUS TRAVELLER AWARD
Each week we recognise our best bus travellers with a weekly award. This award is nominated by Mr
Matt Hoey and it is given to those students who contribute to the safety, comfort and well-being of
their fellow passengers. Congratulations to Riley Edwards who received this award at last Monday’s
assembly. Well done Riley!
HEALTHY LUNCH AWARD
Each week we recognise a student with good food for lunch that is packed in a way that reduces our
rubbish. Each of these students receives a free lunch from our school café as a prize. The winner for
this week, as announced at Monday’s assembly, was Ivy Morton. Congratulations Ivy!
PLEASE REMEMBER
‘We aim for every child to be the best that they can be – without exception!’
‘MY DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN’
Regards, Mark

Homeroom Happenings
Prep’s - This week in Numeracy we have been working on identifying the highest
number in a collection of 2 numbers. In Literacy we have been learning the letter J
and practicing our new reading strategy of Cross Checking- does it sound right,
does it look right and does it make sense.
1/2’s - In Reading we are learning how to find and use interesting words. In
Writing we are learning how to write different procedural texts (instructions,
experiments, recipes), and in Maths we are learning about arrays which are
multiplication and extended addition.
3/4’s - 3/4 B say thanks to Miss Nelmes for the past 3 weeks. This week the 3/4’s
have begun to explore multiplication in Maths. We have continued with our
procedural texts in writing and discovering more interesting verbs we can use.
4/5M – In 4/5 we have been looking for verbs and new and interesting words.
‘Obsequious’ and ‘mendacity’ are very interesting words. We have been
investigating Victoria and looking for towns beginning with each letter of the
alphabet. We have enjoyed our maths lessons on reasoning and this has linked well
with our work on arrays.
5/6’s - In Reading the students have been working on the comprehension strategy
of using text features in non-fiction books. This has been linked with our inquiry unit
based on geography. In Writing, the 5/6’s have been looking at numerous
procedural texts. In Mathematics the 5/6’s have been working on their reasoning
skills. These sets of lessons have been in partnership with Deakin University studies in
mathematics.
The Prevention of Childhood Obesity within the Great South Coast study is an exciting study that is being conducted on Tuesday next week (09/06/15)
by Deakin University.
All Grade 2, 4 and 6 students have been invited to participate. This study will
examine influences on healthy weight and related behaviours (physical activity,
sedentary behaviour, diet quality and quality of life) among children and adolescents
across the Great South Coast region of Victoria.
Please return the OPT-OUT consent form should you and or your child decide NOT TO participate. If
you have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Twycross.
Physical Education Well done to all of the students who represented our school at the Combined Portland
Warrnambool Hamilton Division Cross Country Championships held in Warrnambool last Friday. It was a tougher course this year at the Friendlies. Our students represented our school proudly in the winter conditions. They were up against runners from across the South West and many bet their personal times. Well done everyone and a huge thank you to the great parent support we had on the day.
Congratulations to Max Green who came 5th in his age group and qualified to compete at the Regional Championships in Warrnambool on the 12th June. All the best Max!

Show & Tell .... with Emily Clarke
The best advice I ever received was.. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
The most important things I take into the classroom everyday are.. A smile and good
manners.
One of my most memorable moments in my teaching career is.. Seeing Preps come to
school for the very first time. I love seeing their excitement and joy at finally starting school!
If I had a magic wand I would.. Make it easier and quicker to travel to different countries
around the world.
The most important lesson I have been taught by a student is.. To appreciate all the little
things in life.
As you know, we made the top 40 schools in Victoria with our 2014 Naplan results – latest information
now indicates that our school was one of the top eight performing schools in Victoria (see above
article from “The Educator” magazine).
Congratulations, and thank you to our dedicated staff and all our students!
