Prayer for Palm Sunday
By: Annabel Shilson-Thomas (Adapted)
Hope and Solidarity
Lord, you set your face towards Jerusalem and walked alongside those who suffer.
Be our vision that we too may walk the way of the cross and extend a hand to those
we meet. Lord, you stopped to heal the sick, cure the lame and give sight to the
blind. Be our vision that we too may give time to others and respond to their needs.
Lord, you said, "The first shall be last and the last first." Be our vision that we too
may work towards your kingdom when the exalted will be brought low and the
lowly exalted. Lord, you ate with tax collectors and sinners and heard their stories.
Be our vision that we too may listen to the despised and rejected and value their
lives. Lord, you took time to pray and time to be silent. Be our vision that through
our prayers, fasting and almsgiving we too may draw closer to you and find your
way. Lord, you entered Jerusalem with peace in your heart.
Be our vision that we too may desire peace where others desire war,
and may work for justice where injustice reigns.
Lord, give us the gladness of your help and support us with a willing spirit For you
are our hope and our salvation. Amen
Snap Shot of Term One!-Everything is Awesome! As this is the last newsletter for the term, I want to provide you with a small snap shot highlighting some of the celebrations of term
one. We began the year with a welcome Mass for all our current and new students, staff and families. The school Mass was a
wonderful opportunity for us all, to come together to encounter and engage with Jesus and his message. This is one of our
distinctive features at St Patrick’s, in that we are a place of Welcome, Compassion, Belonging and an Inclusive community of Faith. A
second feature of our uniqueness is that St Patrick’s is a place of Learning. Throughout the term our students and staff engaged in
sporting arenas of swimming, cross country and athletics, with many of our students representing our school locally and at Diocese
level. In celebrating our student achievements, many students were recognised through our weekly assembly awards and leadership
programs such as members of the Student Representative Council. Being a place of Care and Service, our students raised funds
through Caritas and staff came together to celebrate birthdays finishing in zero. We celebrated Catholic Schools Week, with the
99.7FM launching the festivities with a “Good Morning Griffith” breakfast show and concluded with a fun family /grandparents’
Open Day.
2 www.spgww.catholic.edu.au [email protected]
The term really marched into Autumn with a visit from Andrew Chinn and St Theresa’s from Yenda that made the reality show of the “ Voice” seem insignificant, compared to our students singing! Our final distinctive feature is around Stewardship. This term we encountered visitors from Sydney and Wagga to assist us with our application for our new school master plan. As a Christian environment we have a particular concern for the environment and understand and appreciate the interrelatedness of all creation. Hence our new creative direction will ensure that our built environment is ecologically, ethically sustainable and reflects the learner in the Twenty-first Century. This is only a snap shot in time, for a full record or our
achievements, I encourage you to visit our photo gallery on our website or visit us on Facebook. Congratulations and a huge thank you to everyone for making term one truly remarkable and most rewarding. Now that is the spirit of learning!
From Mr Moraschi’s Memory Class
Mr Moraschi is on to something that is exciting in his class. He is encouraging students to make their own memory connections that follow memory chains. He challenges them to invent their own systems for the things they really want to recall, enticing them use their power of imagination, utilizing all their senses, putting themselves into unforgettable adventures and journeys of the mind – and seeing just how powerful their creative, controlled, confident memory can be. Last Friday students came to visit me excitedly telling me about their achievements in memorizing cards. Here is what the students had to say.
Each week in Mr Moraschi’s class we are tested to remember playing cards. We started from remembering nine cards and our test today was to remember twenty-one cards with the number and suit in order. Next week we have to remember twenty-four cards in order with number and suit. This week Mehakpreet Kaur, Yashvi Patel, Shantel Shipton, Brock Twigg and Piriyarathan Karunapalan remembered twenty-one cards in order. When we got all of those cards right, Mr Moraschi went shopping and came back with Magnums for us to eat! By Mehakpreet, Yashvi, Shantel, Brock and Piri! Where did this idea come from? Well, Jonathan Hancock was still at school when he broke his first Guinness world record – for memorizing playing cards. He used the same memory skills to help him gain a first from Oxford University and become the inaugural World Student Memory Champion before achieving the title of World Memory Champion. He has since written 15 books about memory and learning, for adults and children, and now works as a primary school teacher in Brighton. As they say in Lego Land-“Awesome”!
Gifted and Talented Committee
Throughout Catholic Schools week, I spoke about St Patrick’s being more than a place that offers a great education , it is a place that makes everyone feel united together, a family committed to a journey of fun, love, respect and dignity for all. Throughout the term, our staff have been listening to many parents talk about their children and the many gifts they have. Recently, staff have shared their feedback about developing an enrichment program that will cater to the students. In response, I wish to invite parents who are interested in being part of an enrichment committee. The school is looking at running an enrichment program later in the year and the logistics of the program will be shared once the committee is formed.
Athletics Day
Parents just a little reminder, that our annual athletics day will be held tomorrow at West End Oval tomorrow. The students are encouraged to wear their new house coloured shirts. As our new house system is up and running, the students will be encouraged to support their house team. In order to do this well, it is an expectation that all students remain at the oval for the full day. Students will not be allowed to leave early. Thank you for your support. Go McAuley!!

Assembly
Congratulations to those students who received awards this week at school assembly. I am very proud of you all. It is wonderful to see our families at the weekly assemblies. Please visit our website and Facebook pages for more photos.
Change to Bus Drop-Off and Pick Up Area: Warrambool Street Many families will be aware of the ongoing concern regarding the movement of buses and the high risk impact it has on the safety of our students. Currently the buses use our land as a transit station for the transportation of public school and St Patrick’s students. Due to Workplace Health and Safety, our legal advisors have deemed this practice as unsafe and as a consequence the Griffith Council has provided St Patrick’s School with a designated bus stop on Warrambool Street. As of the beginning of Term Two, our students will disembark on to the footpath of Warrambool Street and then move safely into our school grounds. Over the holidays the fence will move back to our boundary where the students will enter the grounds via the same gate. Buses will no longer be able to do U-turns or cross footpaths on Warrambool Street. Over the holidays the Council will add new signage and make adjustments to the Warrambool Street parking. Parents please be aware of road changes around our school when Term Two commences.
Enrolments Mr Wedesweiler has highlighted the enrolments for prospective families for 2015 further in this newsletter. I encourage families to note his column on Transition to School that is referenced by Kids Matter Early Childhood. Recent research by KidsMatter a parent Initiative has identified the transition to school as a time of potential challenge and stress for children and families. At St Patrick’s we firmly believe that transition to school for families is about change and fine-tuning those changes in reference to our learning environment, adjusting to school expectations, our Catholic identity, behavioural rules and routines and the positive prospect of developing new relationships for children and families. St Patrick’s Primary School, like many schools have a vital role to play during transition including reaching out and working in partnership with parents and carers who are formerly the first teacher. We believe, that by assisting parents and carers to support their children’s social and emotional skills will not only be beneficial during the transition to school, but will also provide children with skills that support their mental health in the short and long term. I wish to acknowledge the informative work by KidsMatter Early Childhood and KidsMatter a Parent Initiative.
Monthly Calendar Each month, the calendar on the website will be updated for your information. Parents, remember that beginning next term for all students is on Monday 28
th April. Happy Easter and thanks for reading.
Master Plan
Last Friday our new master plan was submitted to the Griffith City Council. Now the waiting game begins. I anticipate that we
will hear something later in September regarding the funding. I will endeavour to keep you up to date when further information
comes in. Thank you all for your input and valued conversations.

NAPLAN Test Next Term
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and
9. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every
child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken
nationwide, every year, in the second full week in May. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas (or ‘domains’) of:
Reading
Writing
Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
Numeracy.
NAPLAN tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school curriculum. To get a sense of the
‘look and feel’ of the tests and to understand what types of questions are asked, a full set of example NAPLAN tests are available
at http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/naplan.html
Ps: Go the Broncos!
May the Lord bless you and take care of you;
May the Lord be kind and gracious to you;
May the Lord look on you with favour and give you peace.
Yours,

From our Assistant Principal Remembering our Ex-servicemen & Women on ANZAC Day in a special way. The Griffith cemetery is the final resting place for 1001 known ex-servicemen and women. The Griffith RSL since 2010 with the help of the community remembers each of these ex-servicemen
and women on ANZAC Day by placing a small white cross and a flower on each grave. Following
the ANZAC Day service in the park, the community and students in particular are invited to visit the Griffith Cemetery and place the provided flowers on the graves marked with little white crosses. prior to ANZAC Day, Tuesday 22
nd April High School students are asked to assist placing white crosses on the graves. In
2013 not one of the marked graves went without a flower placed upon it. The Griffith RSL looks forward to our community, particularly our school students, ensuring that those who have served their country are not forgotten. Donations of flowers will also be gratefully accepted. For more information please contact Ron Anson (6964 1715 or 0497 157 437) For those interested in attending the ANZAC Day march and service you can assemble for the march no later than 10.15am with the march commencing at 10.30am. The service in Memorial Park commences at 11am with an approximate finish time of 11.45am

Transition to School In the lead up to your child starting school, there are many ways you can plan and prepare for the changes ahead. This will help your child and family make a successful start to school. Every family will have different preparation ideas and strategies, so it’s best to make a plan that suits your individual family. The following are a range of useful tips and ideas from early childhood educators, teachers and parents.
In the months before school -Get to know your child’s school.
At St. Patrick’s we readily help parents to find out: - When your child’s school is holding information nights that your family can attend.
When are the transition to school sessions scheduled to start? - the layout of your child’s school and how it differs from their early childhood
setting. Where are the classrooms and how are they organised? Where are the toilets, drinking taps, out of school hours care rooms and play equipment?
- how the school day is organised. What time does school start and finish? When and how long are the play times? How does this routine differ to your child’s previous routine at home or in their early childhood setting?
- what children are expected to bring to school each day - how communication between the school and home will happen - the before and after school care arrangements for working families - how you can get involved in the school community and meet other families starting at the school.
Enrolments Now Open 2015 St Patrick’s school is now seeking expressions of interest for Kindergarten children for 2015. Enrolments for Kindergarten are processed throughout term 1 and interviews will be held in Term 2. It is important that prospective parents inquire early as to avoid disappointment as vacancies/places fill fast. I realise this may seem early, but due to the high number of siblings on our enrolment system, we are informing our community now. If your intention is to be part of our community here at St Patrick’s then please telephone the office on 69642888 and provide details to our office staff. I encourage all friends and parents to look at our website for information about our school at http://web.spgww.catholic.edu.au/
Hopes, Dreams, Aspirations By way of feedback, I would like to share with you that in Week 5 of this term we had 95 interviews between parents and teachers. This is wonderful engagement and I thank all who were a part of this opportunity for both staff and parents to share their learnings and understandings about the students. We will continue to provide opportunities for future engagement and relationship building and I strongly encourage parents to contact teachers if they feel they have a concern or words of praise to share.
Staff on leave We warmly congratulate Mrs Josie Ponticello (Year 4, 705 Class Teacher) on her recent marriage to her husband John in Canberra. Mrs Ponticello will be on her honeymoon in the first week of Term Two from 28
th April to May 2
nd. Taking the lead
learning for Year 4, 705 class will be Mrs Daniela Armanini.

Virtue for the Week
From our Religious Education Coordinator 5th Week of Lent Project Compassion, Week 5, brings you the story of Lorraine. When Lorraine, from Aboriginal Australia, learnt that she would have to move 550km away to receive vital dialysis treatment, she was heartbroken to be separated from her mob and culture. The Purple House is providing her with a home away from home. An income-generating bush balm program is helping her reconnect with culture and community. Your donation to Project Compassion helps Lorraine, and other First Australians, retain their dignity and connection to culture during difficult times. www.caritas.org.au
Mission Day
Students may wear casual clothing to school and bring a gold coin donation to go towards our Caritas collection. We will begin the day by welcoming St Therese, Yenda students to our classrooms. At 9:30am we will head to the hall for a prayer service followed by a journey around the school to visit the Stations of the Cross. A Year 6 narrator will lead a class to visit small groups of students in a dramatic freeze frame at each station. At the completion of the journey students will place their gold coin donations on the secret word on the basketball court written in chalk. Family and Friends are invited on the journey with classes. Please ensure your child does have a hat for day and don’t forget one if your visiting. Year 6 students are asked to wear all black for this dramatization. They may then change into their casual clothing.

Pastoral Care Corner Dear Members of our School Community, We live in an era where one’s capacity, ability and knowledge are measured by written evidence such as certificates, diplomas, degrees and so on. We are all familiar with the Naplan testing and the importance governments place on measuring the ability and knowledge of our precious students. Equally as important are qualities that are not measured by testing, but are evident in the day-to-day interactions between teachers, students, staff members and parents. We are blessed to have immeasurable qualities that create warmth, love and care in our school community. Love and peace to you all this Easter.
Cath Catanzariti, Pastoral Care Coordinator
From our Parish
Dear Friends, As we journey towards Good Friday we contemplate how much God loves us. This was made visible when His Son, Jesus, willingly suffered and died for our sins on the Cross. Even our sufferings are proof that God never gives up on us - they are sometimes a last resort to get our attention. There once lived in a village in Germany a wealthy and popular couple. They were Catholics in name, but passive in their faith, never making time to pray, go to confession, serve their neighbours, or develop a friendship with Jesus. After many years, God gave them a child, whom they loved dearly - they even had him baptized. But while he was still very young, he became sick, suffered terribly, and died. The couple was devastated. Their sorrow soon turned to anger, and they came to speak with the priest. "If God loves us, why did he do this to us?" They asked. The priest said, "God does indeed love you. And his taking your son to heaven is a special sign of that love." They began to protest. "Listen," the priest went on: A good shepherd prepared a delicious feast for his sheep. But when he opened the sheep pen, they wouldn't come and eat it. He called and whistled and sang, but they just kept wandering farther away. Finally the shepherd went out and picked up a little lamb, carried it into the pen, and set it down beside the food. When the other sheep saw the lamb eating hungrily, they all made their way in
to enjoy the feast. This is what Jesus has done with you. Till now, you always refused to prepare yourself to come to the great feast he has prepared for you in heaven - no matter how many invitations he sent you. You have been giving so much attention to earthly comforts that you neglected the care of your souls. Now he has taken your child, whom you loved so much, so that you will find yourselves inspired to follow Christ here on earth so you can follow your son into heaven. Even our sufferings can be a proof that God never gives up on us. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Let us go to Him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and experience the joy of His tender Mercy. Happy Easter!
God Bless,
Fr Grace

The Crowded Calendar.
2014 has had a busy term one with Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. This is because this year the Albury Council is closing
the synthetic athletics track at the end of June to upgrade the surface. We have to have all carnivals including Diocesan Athletics
finished by the end of term two instead of half way through term three. 2015 should see the carnival cycle return to its previous
format, which is a little less hectic. Thanks go to you all for your patience and understanding.
Trent Barrett Finals Day
We are yet to be informed of when the Finals Day for Trent Barrett will be for our Year Four Girls. It will not be until next term
and as soon as we get information we will pass it on.

Thanks go to:-
-The early morning helpers who were at school from 6.30am to help load gear and go to Collina Oval and join a bigger team to
set up the course.
-The many family members who supported the day as officials, canteen workers and supporters.
-Marian Catholic College and their students who acted as Course Officials and enthusiastic support for our runners.
-The school staff for their continued efforts.
-Griffith City council’s Parks and Gardens Staff and Griffith Touch for assisting us over the years.

Garden Club: Seeking Volunteers Last year, our school was successful in obtaining a grant from the Office of Environment & Heritage for the construction of a vegetable garden as well as the development of some teaching programs around the garden. The grant was topped up by an additional grant through Murrumbidgee Irrigation’s EnviroWise program, which is now expired. The school purchased 7 garden beds from Bunnings (whom also provided sponsorship) as well as straw, chicken manure (thanks to Peter Tyson), soil and many other items to start planting a summer crop. Right now is the perfect time to start preparing your winter vegetable garden. Your child can assist you or the school in the following way:
1. Collect cherry tomato or strawberry punnets as they make perfect seed raising trays
2. If you already have a vegetable garden, keep the seeds from your home produce
3. Good plants to grow during autumn/winter are any members of the cabbage family (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts (!!), kale, pak choy, Chinese cabbage), spring onions, leek, garlic, onion, snow peas, carrots, beetroot, silverbeet, lettuce
4. Have a go at planting a few seeds in the holidays to see how you go. If you don’t have a vegie garden at home, bring in the seedlings for the school garden!
We are now looking for some enthusiastic gardeners (parents, grandparents & friends) who are willing to form a gardening club to assist our students and teachers in running the vegetable garden and maybe even some other parts of our school grounds as we embark on putting in place the new master plan. If we get 8-10 volunteers it would only be a couple of hours of your time once a month.
If you’re interested in becoming part of this group, please advise the school office of the following information:
Name & contact details
Availability (day/time)
Please note that a “Working with children” check will need to be done before any volunteers are able to work with our children.
Sigrid Tijs (a member of our School Council) will be in touch in late May to have a quick chat about how the Garden Club will run. For any questions, please ring Sigrid on 0427 257 287. Regards Sigrid
