Recovery in Chinese trade far from sightREUTERS — BEIJING

The slump in China’s exports is expected to have extended into March while a collapse in oil price likely deepened a decline in imports, a Reuters poll showed, as the coronavirus cripples the global economy and overall demand.

The pandemic’s sweeping impact on businesses and con-sumers has triggered an unprec-edented burst of stimulus from policymakers around the world in the past two months, but the widespread lockdowns in many economies is seen delaying a recovery in trade both in China

and globally. The grim trade report is likely to reinforce views that China’s economy sharply contracted in the first quarter for the first time since at least 1992. Analysts are already forecasting a steep global recession this year as the virus has prompted worldwide restrictions on movement of people and goods.

Exports from the world’s second-largest economy are expected to have fallen 14 percent in March from a year earlier, according to a median estimate from the survey of 31 economists, slowing the downturn somewhat from a 17.2 perent contraction in January-February period.

Imports, meanwhile, are set to have shrunk 9.5 percent from a year earlier, the sharpest drop since July 2016 and versus an 4.0 percent decl ine in

January-February. The World Trade Organization last week forecast that goods trade would shrink more steeply this year than in the global financial crisis a decade ago before rebounding in 2021 as the COVID-19 pan-demic recedes. Early in the out-break, China imposed tough travel restrictions and factory suspensions to curb the spread of the coronavirus, squeezing labour supplies and sending exporters scrambling to fulfil orders.

But as the pandemic ravages the economies of China’s trading partners, overseas orders have been scrapped, with many

privately-owned exporters firing workers and warning about factory closures in not too distant future. “Foreign demand from European and US markets may have already significantly con-tracted in March,” said UBS Econ-omist Tao Wang (pictured), noting an official survey of fac-tories released earlier this month showed export orders continued to fall in March.

“Despite some possible improvements in economic activity in March, first-quarter GDP growth is expected to con-tract by 10 percent from a year earlier,” said Wang.

Investment bank Nomura

and ANZ even raised the prospect of a recession in the world’s second-biggest economy, forecasting second quarter GDP to dip below zero. While China has managed to largely bring the virus under control, the country is facing rising risks of a second-wave infections from abroad, driven by a rise in infected travellers arriving from overseas.

As of April 12, China has reported a total of 82,160 coro-navirus cases on the mainland, with 3,341 deaths. Worldwide, the pandemic has claimed over 113,000 lives and infected more than 1.8 million people.

Fear of an impending car-price collapse grips the auto industryBLOOMBERG

The auto industry – already fretting lengthy factory shut-downs and depressed new-vehicle demand – is starting to sound the alarm about a potential used-car price collapse that could have far-reaching consequences for manufacturers, lenders and rental companies.

Used-vehicle auctions are for now virtually paralyzed, much like the rest of the economy. The grave concern market watchers have is that vehicles already are starting to pile up at places where buyers and sellers make and take bids on cars and trucks -- and that this imbalance will last for months.

If that fear is realized and prices plummet, it will be detrimental to automakers and their in-house lending units, which likely will have to write down the value of lease contracts that had assumed vehicles would retain greater value. Rental-car companies also will get less money from selling down their fleet of vehicles, which are sitting idle amid a global pandemic that’s been catastrophic for travel.

“Six months from now, there will be huge, if not

unprecedented, levels of wholesale supply in the market,” Dale Pollak, an executive vice president of Cox Automotive, which owns North America’s largest auto-auction company, wrote in an open letter to auto dealers last week.

“Cars are coming in, but they aren’t selling. Today’s huge supply of wholesale inventory suggests supplies will be even larger in the months ahead.” Automakers are doing what they can to limit the damage. General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co.’s finance units already are offering customers one-month lease extensions. In addition to relieving pressure on consumers wary of going into showrooms, this will delay some of the influx of off-lease vehicles headed to auctions that are for now operating only virtually.

But these measures are unlikely to go nearly far enough to address the asym-metry between the supply of used vehicles and demand that is unlikely to rebound anytime soon given that almost 17 million Americans sought jobless benefits in just the last three weeks.

“There aren’t a lot of people in gloves and masks

running out to buy cars,” said Maryann Keller, a former Wall Street analyst who’s now an auto-industry consultant in Stamford, Connecticut. “Auctions are mostly shut down and they’re filled with cars that have no buyers.” Used-car sales fell 64 percent in the last week of March, according to Manheim. The Cox Automotive-owned auction company estimates that prices have fallen about 10 percent in recent weeks, though that figure is based on unusually low volume at auctions.

If that level of decline lasts or worsens, it could have huge implications for GM, whose General Motors Financial unit had $30.4bn worth of vehicles leased to customers at the end of last year. If GM Financial needs to boost its estimate of how much those vehicles are goercent decline in residual values this year.

If the 10 percent drop Manheim has seen recently persists, depreciation expense could counter the $1.9bn that GM Financial earned in pretax profit last year, said Joel Lev-ington, a credit analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. Ford Motor Credit faces similar risk, he said.
