Al Ahmadani calls for solution to unlicensed 'home hairdressers' phenomenonTHE PENINSULA - DOHA

Qatar Chamber board member and chair of Woman Committee Ibtihaj Al Ahmadani held a webinar with many owners of beauty salons.

The meeting held upon a request from several business-women and investors in beauty salons to review losses incurred by this sector due to practices of “home hairdressers” who practice the profession at home without a license, adversely affecting the licensed salon sector. The webinar saw the par-ticipation of many business-women including Dr. Sheikha Al Kubaisi, Hessa Hamed, Turfa Al Malki and Nora Al Kharji.

Addressing the meeting, Al Ahmadani said that the Cham-ber’s Woman Committee is interested in discussing all obstacles facing businesswomen to find appropriate solutions with concerned parties. She noted that the problem of unli-censed hairdressers is one of the obstacles that face commercial sectors worldwide, affirming that it must be addressed to find effective solutions.

Al Ahmadani also said that the Woman Committee in the Chamber received complaints from businesswomen who are suffering the spread of the phe-nomenon of unlicensed traders in beauty sector, who work without a license in violation of the law.

She noted that these unli-censed hairdressers damage licensed plastic salons, referring that this action is harmful to this important economic sector.

Al Ahmadani assured that this phenomenon had been raised many times in the meetings of the Woman Com-mittee, underlining the impor-tance finding deterrent solutions for this problem.

The webinar also reviewed all legal and moral violations of this phenomenon, as well as its health and financial impacts on the national economy, and the financial impacts on licensed salons. The meeting also touched on the positive impacts of

licensed salons on the state’s economy and their contribution to making Qatar a tourist desti-nation in the field of women’s beauty centers.

Attendees said that the beauty centers provides jobs and income for the staff working in many fields, noting that salons are required by the Ministry of Commerce to use products that meet standard specifications in terms of components and validity, so salons supply other commercial sectors with liquidity to buy cosmetics, ster-ilizers, and new products that are offered in the market.

The meeting also pointed out that salons also contribute to

increasing profits of local banks, like other commercial sectors, from opening workers’ accounts, transferring monthly salaries, requesting facilities, loans, card exchange and paying tenants’ checks, in addition to salons’ contribution to the real estate market through hiring service and commercial property.

The meeting highlighted the role of those who are facilitating the work of unlicensed hair-dressers such as social media activists who make advertise-ments and promote unlicensed employment, visa traders and shell companies, and a segment of Qatari women who deal with these labourers.

Coronavirus vaccine maker CureVac plans US listingREUTERS - BERLIN

German drugmaker CureVac, in which the government is taking a sizeable stake to help fund a COVID-19 vaccine, is planning an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States next month, a finance ministry document seen by Reuters yesterday showed.

The German government plans to invest €300m ($338.5m) in a 23 percent holding in previously unlisted CureVac to aid the further development of the biotech company’s vaccine against the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

The finance ministry said in a letter to parliament’s budget committee dated June 15 that CureVac “currently has a big capital requirement and plans a flotation on the Nasdaq in New York in July 2020.”

European biotech firms prefer the Nasdaq because the

US capital market offers a critical mass of highly spe-cialised biopharma investors, analysts say.

German biotech firms BioNtech and Morphosys have recently sought US listings.

The ministry added in its letter that the decision to acquire a stake in CureVac had to be made quickly given legal requirements attached to the planned flotation, which is expected to take place in mid-July.

Economy Minister Peter Altmaier yesterday confirmed an earlier Reuters report that Germany will take a stake in the unlisted biotech company. The deal values the firm at €1.3bn.

That follows reported attempts by the US government to acquire CureVac or its assets in March, which stirred a backlash in Germany, with gov-ernment officials voicing support for keeping CureVac German.

Huawei's flagship tablet MatePad Pro launched in QatarTHE PENINSULA - DOHA

Designed with productivity and entertainment capabilities in mind, the Huawei MatePad Pro is launched in Qatar. Huawei’s flagship tablet is set to elevate consumer experiences and bring their ideas to life.

Running on EMUI19, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro supports extraordinary features like Multi-Window, Multi-screen

Collaboration and HUAWEI APP Multiplier. It also comes with a large display with ultra-narrow bezels to achieve the world’s highest tablet screen-to-body ratio at 90 per cent. Powered by the 7nm Kirin 990 flagship chipset, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro delivers out-standing performance and battery life. It also supports the HUAWEI M-Pencil and Smart Magnetic Keyboard, thus

driving synergy with PC Mode and new WPS features for maximum productivity. Addi-tionally, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro is also the world’s first tablet to support wireless and reverse wireless charging.

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro introduces a range of revolu-tionary innovations that funda-mentally changes the way users interact with devices: Huawei Share enables Multi-screen

Collaboration, which breaks down the barriers between Huawei devices with advanced cross-platform functionality.

Multi-screen Collaboration enables drag-and-drop file transfers between smartphones and tablets. Peripheral sharing lets users type on the smart-phone using the tablet’s key-board and screen, play music saved on the smartphone with the tablet’s speakers and more.

This solution also makes it possible for the user to pick up calls or respond to text mes-sages directly from the tablet, facilitating a seamless multi-device experience.

Additionally, users can change the way they do it all with the new APP Multiplier feature that splits one app instance into two windows, delivering a revolutionary dual-view experience.

New Land Rover Defender has made a tremendous impact since its arrival at Alfardan Premier MotorsTHE PENINSULA - DOHA

Alfardan Premier Motors Co, the official retailer of Jaguar Land Rover vehicles in Qatar, has attracted considerable attention from enthusiasts waiting for the legendary vehicle’s return; the new Land Rover Defender.

Redefining an icon is no easy task and that’s why the new Land Rover Defender preserves the heritage and purity of the original yet improves on its durability and capability. The famed go-any-where-do-anything attitude and toughness will always remain at its core.

“The new Land Rover

Defender’s arrival has brought a true legend of the off-road world back to showrooms. The new iteration merges legendary Land Rover 4x4 capabilities with superior ride and handling, rev-olutionary design, innovative technology, and five-star safety features to present a vehicle that is perfectly equipped for any expedition,” said Samer Bou Dargham, General Manager for Alfardan Premier Motors.

“Importantly, none of the characteristics that draw such strong loyalty to previous Defender editions have been lost as the manufacturer has suc-ceeded in linking the past and the

present. The model created quite a buzz when it was first seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and it’s no surprise that we’ve received many inquiries from our valued customers of this iconic vehicle,” added Bou Dargham.

Powerful yet efficient engines and an array of intelligent off-road technologies place the new Defender among the most capable 4x4s in the world.

A choice of advanced petrol engines ensure the vehicle has the power and control to navigate any environment, while a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) powertrain will join the range next year to offer silent and effi-cient electric-only progress.

The petrol line-up comprises a four-cylinder P300 and a pow-erful six-cylinder P400, featuring efficient Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle technology with all engines paired to a smooth-shifting ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Configurable Terrain Response debuts on the new Defender, allowing experienced off-roaders to fine-tune indi-vidual vehicle settings to perfectly suit the conditions, while inex-perienced drivers can let the system detect the most appro-priate vehicle settings for the terrain, using the intelligent ‘Auto’ function.

Meanwhile, Land Rover’s advanced ClearSight Ground View technology helps drivers take full advantage of the Defender’s all-conquering capa-bility by showing the area usually hidden by the bonnet, directly ahead of the front wheels, on the central touchscreen.

A distinctive silhouette makes the new Defender instantly rec-ognisable, with minimal front and rear overhangs providing excellent approach, departure, and breakover angles. Land Rover’s designers have re-envi-sioned familiar Defender

trademarks for the 21st century, giving the new 4x4 a purposeful upright stance and Alpine light windows in the roof, while retaining the side-hinged rear tailgate and externally mounted spare wheel that make the original so identifiable.

The stripped-back person-ality of the original Defender has been embraced inside, where structural elements usually hidden from view have been exposed, with the emphasis on simplicity and practicality. Inno-vative features include a dash-mounted gear shifter to accom-modate an optional central front ‘jump’ seat, which provides three-abreast seating across the front like early Land Rovers.

With its new Pivi Pro Info-tainment system featuring a dynamic touchscreen, the new Defender is as technologically advanced as it is durable and tough. In addition, the model takes Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) technology to a new level, with 14 individual modules capable of receiving remote updates, therefore minimising

time spent and eliminating the need to visit a Land Rover retailer.

Personalised for your world The new Defender is available in 90 and 110 body designs, with up to six seats in the 90 and the option of five, six or 5+2 seating in the 110. The model range com-prises Defender, First Edition and top of the range Defender X models, as well as standard, S, SE, and HSE specification packs. Four Accessory Packs are also offered – Explorer, Adventure, Country and Urban – each giving the new Defender a distinct character with a specially selected range of enhancements.

A new Satin Protective Film will be available as a factory-fit option with Indus Silver, Gondwana Stone, and Pangea Green colours providing a unique and contemporary finish as it protects the new Defender’s paintwork.

“The new Defender is respectful of its past yet perfectly tailored for the discerning modern motorist,” added, Bruce Robertson, Managing Director for Jaguar Land

Rover MENA. “Ever since launching in the 1940s, the Defender has built a deserved rep-utation for its ability to conquer any terrain. For today’s iteration, underneath the premium finish, sophisticated yet familiar new look, and masses of advanced technology, this simple fact remains undeniably true. It’s a pleasure to have introduced the new Defender to Qatar as we begin a new chapter for this 4x4 icon.”

The new Defender builds on its long and rich heritage in the region. The original Series and Defender models have long been relied upon by a diverse group of motorists to stand up to the region’s testing terrain. New chapters in the vehicle’s long story have already been written, as the new Defender was pushed to its limits during more than 62,000 gruelling development tests. The model covered more than 1.2 million kilometres across some of the harshest environments on earth, including the Middle East’s unforgiving desert landscape.
