    individual aspirations or ambitions. We

    are concerned about the art of tuba playing, i f we are

    serious

    about ourselves as musicians,

    we can establish

    the

    image

    of ar t is ts of the first order comparable with performers

    on

    more

    established instruments, then, i t will be difficul t for

    a

    leading

    American composer to

    state

    that

    he

    would

    consider

    composing a

    concerto

    for

    "almost every

    instrument

    except

    the

    tuba."

    inappropriate and

    for music

    cr i t ics

    to

    refer

    to

    the

    tuba as the "belcher of the

    band,"

    as a "non-paper trained elephant, l ion or hippo," or as

    a

    "musical curiosity."

    manufacturers not

    to consider

    our

    advice

    new instruments,

    and i t will

    be difficul t

    for publishers not

    to

    seek ,out and

    produce the best l i terature possible for the tuba.

    When

    died in August, 1971,

    a tremendous

    void

    was

    created in

    ' the

    tuba

    world. The

    collective, crea

    t ive

    efforts

    of the tuba fraternity must operate with maximum efficiency in

    'order

    to

    help

    f i l l

    this void.

    One of

    our most

    respected

    members

    recently stated that there "as

    less

    jealo

    among tubists than

    any

    other group of instrumentalists

    and that

    he

    "never met a

    tuba player

    he-didn't

    l ike." This kind of spi r i t exemplifies the camaraderie necessary for the success

    of

    a

    tuba

    fraternity.

    T U.B.A.

    is now in

    the

    final stage of

    infancy.

    When

    H.

    Robert Ryker,

    our

    Internationa

    President, f i rs t

    placed a few obscure

    notices

    in several publications

    some

    five

    and

    six

    year

    ago

    announcing

    the bir th of a

    tuba fraternity, l i t t l e

    realize the

    monstrous

    had nurtured. Before the first year expired,

    some 750 - 1,000 le t ters

    f i l led his f i les

    from

    CHICAGO REPORT 1972

    On December 14,

    1972,

    an organizational meeting took

    place

    at the Mid-West

    National Band and Orchestra Clinic and some

    fif ty

    people were

    in

    attendance

    at the meeting. Resolutions adopted

    a t

    this meeting

    were

    significant and

    include:

    coordinate

    First International Tuba Symposium-Workshop to be

    held at Indiana University, May 22-26,
