Spain Has Been Present in the 30 Editions of FIHAVInterview with Mr. Guillermo Kessler, Economic and Com-mercial Counselor of the Span-ish Embassy in Havana.
Mr. Kessler, how would you describe the economic
relations between Cuba and Spain?
economic relations with Cuba are satisfacto-
ry, although we are convinced that commercial
exchanges can substantially increase both ways.
In 2011, Spain exported to Cuba 647,000,000 €
and Spain imported from Cuba 172,000,000 €. up
to July 2012 (the last existing data), Spanish ex-
ports had increased 8% and imports 3%.
Spain is the third world exporter to Cuba, af-
ter venezuela and China. In terms of imports, we
are in the sixth place of the Cuban export des-
tinations. Our principal imports are rum, cigars
and seafood, Cuba’s traditional productions.
Which are the sectors of the Cuban economy with
the greatest presence of Spanish companies?
Practically all of them. However, the princi-
pal Spanish exports are centered on electrical
material, all types of machinery and industrial
spares, paints, car spares, plastics, etc. Spanish
companies are present in all the Cuban economic
sectors supplying products and equipment.
It would be of interest if you would refer to the
role of the Bilateral Committee between both nations.
Historically, the Bilateral Committee has
played a relevant role in the boosting of bilat-
eral economic relations. It has allowed Spanish
companies to have firsthand knowledge about
Cuba’s interests and projects, with which rela-

in important sectors of the Cuban economy like
renewable energies, durable consumer goods
and the agricultural sector, among others.
Spanish businesspeople have historically been
one of the most represented at the Havana Inter-
national Trade Fair, how is the Spanish participa-
tion projected at FIHAV 2012?
last year, the first with an Official Pavil-
ion sponsored by ICeX, the Spanish presence
reached 120 companies and the 2,500 m2, which
led us to win the award for the Most repre-
sented Country. this year, we hope to increase
that presence with more companies, more me-
ters and more pavilions. the interest of Spanish
companies in this fair has constantly increased
in recent years, but I would like to highlight that

same time, has enabled an exchange of business
knowledge, practices and techniques of both
countries, from which both parties have benefit-
ed. as is known, the 18th session has just been
held in September and this year has been espe-
cially intense and productive. I wanted to avail
myself of this opportunity to congratulate the
Official Chamber of Cuba for the outstanding
role it has played in its organization.
At what spheres are the attempts for new busi-
ness opportunities between Cuban and Spanish
businesspeople directed?
as I already said, the Spanish companies are
present in all sectors of economic life in Cuba and
to that extent there are attempts in all of them.
However, perhaps I can highlight the great inter-
est awakened by the ambitious investment plan

resources and effort are being chanelled to the
tourism sector. It will play a major role in the fur-
ther creation of employment and the multiplier
effect to the rest of the economy is anticipated.
What are the main tourist attractions in Trini-
dad and Tobago?
trinidad and tobago’s greatest resource is
our unique culture and dynamic people. we have
one of the most plural societies in the world,
with our population being a rich mix of all differ-
ent ethnicities and origins. we are the home of a
world-renowned Carnival.
we are the birthplace of steelpan, calypso,
limbo, tassa and chutney music, exotic cuisine,
art and craft.
In terms of places of interest, one of our most
popular and sought after sites is the asa wright
nature Centre, a 526 hectare nature sanctuary
home to over 159 species of birds, with over 300
varieties of indigenous flora and fauna. In toba-
go, we have the oldest protected rain forest in
the western Hemisphere.
another popular attraction is Maracas
Beach, home of the world famous “Bake and
Shark”, a local take on a shark sandwich that has
been called the most delicious fish sandwich in
the world by top chef and food adventurer an-
drew Zimmern.
the only naturally occurring asphalt lake in
the world, known locally as the laBrea Pitch lake
is also high on the list of must-sees to tourists.
In tobago visitors seek out Buccoo reef, a
protected area full of coral reefs, and also the
nylon Pool, an in-sea shallow white sand pool
located close to the reef.
Our twin-island republic has all bases cov-
ered, an urbane trinidad, and an idyllic, leisurely
tobago, both replete with breathtaking natural
beauty and welcoming people.
Which countries have so far provided the high-
est number of tourist visits to Trinidad and Toba-
go in 2012?
thus far for 2012, the united States has been
the country with the most visitors to trinidad
and tobago. However, we have large numbers of
visitors coming from Canada, the uK and europe
to our shores.
What airlines have the highest rate of tourists?
examining trinidad first, we have Caribbean
airlines and american airlines providing the bulk
of air travel services to our visitors whereas in
tobago, Caribbean airlines and chartered flights
such as British airways, Condor, Monarch and
