We are so pleased to present you with this beautiful depiction of the richness and vibrancy of our congregation. This Annual Report reflects the many programs and opportunities we offer as well as the incredible generosity of our members who donate money, time, and expertise. The years of 2018 and 2019 (5779) saw many landmark moments including the installation of our Rabbis, the renovation of our magnificent building, and the arrival of Cantor Shafritz. We certainly have much for which to be grateful.

Together, we live our Judaism and our Jewish values every day.

The Temple Shalom Annual Report contains information from the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018 and ending June 30, 2019. In addition to highlighting the year’s memorable activities, events, and achievements, this report also shares financial information to enable all members of our community to understand the sources and uses of our annual budget. We hope that you will find this information useful. Please feel free to contact any of us if you have questions.

Running a successful synagogue requires a lot of resources. Our leadership works hard each year to provide high quality spiritual, educational, and social programming for members of all ages, always with an eye toward fiscal responsibility and stewardship. But we need your help as well. Dues, school tuition, and event fees cover only about 83% of our annual operating budget; to close the gap, we rely on income from our Endowment Fund and generous contributions from our members.

As you review the report, we ask you to help us remain vibrant and encourage you to live and give generously. Thank you for all you do for our community.

CREATING MEANINGFUL WORSHIP EXPERIENCESPrayer connects us more deeply to God and to one another. At Temple Shalom, Shabbat and holiday services are filled with music and the spirit of community. A variety of options are available for worshiping on Shabbat (Shabbat Halleilu, Tot Shabbat Halleilu, Shabbat Evening Services, Shabbat Mindfulness and Meditation,

Saturday Minyan and Torah Study, and Saturday Morning Services) and the High Holy Days, including the new, multigenerational B’Yachad Service. As we come together to worship throughout the year, we find meaning and joy in the connections we build.

Our community’s dual commitments to repairing the world, tikkun olam, and to justice, tzedek, inform our priorities. Longtime programs like the Mitzvah Mall (now Family Mitzvah Day), Potatoes and Stuffing, the Brotherhood Blood Drive, Caring Community, and the High Holy Day Food Drive

reflect this dedication to social action. During the 2019 fiscal year, the Tzedek Task Force (formerly the Social Action Committee) focused its community organizing and advocacy efforts on four pressing social issues: Immigrant Justice, Food Justice, Gun Violence, and Transgender Rights.

ENGAGING AND EDUCATINGOUR YOUNG PEOPLETemple Shalom’s exceptional educational programs not only promote Jewish learning, but also build community. At every age level— Nursery School, Shacharit (grades K-5), Mincha (grades 6-7), and Ma’ariv (grades 8-12)—our programs hum with activity and purpose, providing innovative curricula that deepen

students’ connections to Judaism and the larger world. Outside the classroom, our youngest children gather to worship (Tot Shabbat), sing (Musical Matzoh Balls), and engage in hands-on activities (Little Explorers), while our SHAFTY youth groups provide teens with opportunities for learning, fun, and social impact.

From informal clubs for the hobbyist to formal classes for the lifelong learner, Temple Shalom provides a wide

Over the last year, Temple Shalom has taken important steps to ensure that our congregation remains strong and vibrant. In November 2018, Rabbis Allison Berry and Laura J. Abrasley were installed as our co-Senior Rabbis. Temple Shalom is the first congregation to be co-led by two female rabbis; we are proud of this distinction and are blessed that these strong, dynamic leaders share the rabbinate. Additionally, we undertook major renovations to our entrance, sanctuary, and social hall. Like the selection of our clergy, investment in our building is an investment in our future.

The endowment is a professionally managed fund comprised of member donations from which we draw interest each year to enable us to balance the budget. Historically, we have drawn 8-12% of our endowment annually. In May 2019, the Board of Trustees committed to a fiscally responsible 5.5% annual distribution for the following fiscal year and beyond, in order to ensure endowment sustainability long into the future. This means that, going forward, your gifts will play an increasingly crucial role in allowing our thriving community to maintain rich programming and to remain affordable and accessible to all.
