PRIMARY ASSEMBLY The Year 6 students did a great job of hosting Primary Assembly yesterday. We enjoyed learning about what they are doing in the classroom. Thank you to all who attended. The Learning Disposition Awards were present to the following students: Grit – Willow Harrison, Dylan Webb, Josiah Lawrie, Ryder Franks, Tayla Coad. Resilience – Azaeri Stewat-Stark, Eva Dempsey, Amali Barnett, Max Pucci, Sadie Curtis. Self-Regulation – Jed Lodge, Nash Bodington, Allison Cummings, Jack Pedemonte, Ned Prosser. Well done to these students – a proud moment for them.

VISITORS FROM INDONESIA Today the Primary students were visited by exchange students from Indonesia. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to make learning Indonesian more relevant and engaging. Thank you to Penny Ellin, our Open Access Indonesian teacher for the R-2 students for making this visit possible. AUTHOR VISIT Tomorrow we will be visited by author Phillip Gwynne. He will be talking to the English students Year 3-6 and Year 7-12. He will also be taking a creative writing workshop that has been offered to 20 selected students. Thank you to Fran Oswald and her Library network for making this possible.

WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY Next Friday (17

th May) is Walk Safely to School Day and again we will meet

the challenge put out to all Australian Schools and involve TBAS in this. Our ‘walking busses’ will be travelling from the Kindy and the island with school staff to walk the route to school acknowledging the benefits of walking and being safe as they do so. Parents are also encouraged to join us and we will be departing the Kindy at 8:25 and the island at 8:05am, see you with your walking shoes on!

All Smiles on Return from Work Experience

Gavin Hammond Senior Secondary Leader

As many of you would know, our Year 10 students were out for the final week of Term 1 while on Work Experience. During the week, our staff visited or contacted the students and their employer. The feedback they returned with was unanimously positive! Reports have been coming in from the respective employers during the weeks following and they are confirming this sentiment. Congratulations to this cohort of students who conducted themselves in a manner which has brought credit to themselves, their families and our school! We are very grateful for the businesses and organisations who have willingly supported our school and the Year 10 students in particular by hosting them for this period. These are listed below. If the reports received so far are anything to go by, these students have a bright future to look forward to in the world of work beyond school! Our sincere thanks go to… Atkinson Auto Electrical, Walker Smith General Builders, Baptist Care SA, Steve Trezise Electrical, ABC EP radio, Pt Lincoln Times, Tumby Bay Kindy, Lincoln Veterinary Centre, Richards Lock N Safe -Whyalla, Orroroo Area School Pre-school & Reception/Year 1 class, Vets on Eyre, Tumby Bay Area School Year 3/4 & 1/2 classes and

class, Sekol Farmed Tuna I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Feebi Hazelgrove, our PLP (SACE Stage 1 Personal Learning Plan) teacher for the great work she did in creating this opportunity for these students.

INFLUENZA A There has been much publicity in the media about the high impact of the flu and the associated health risks. With already several reported cases of Influenza A in our community, it is crucial that students who have suspected flu symptoms visit the doctor and stay away from school until they are no longer contagious to prevent the spread of this serious health risk.

The Egg Plant During the holidays the school welcomed 4 Isa Brown Chickens which were kindly donated

well, which was constructed last year by Mardi Masson, Olivia Turner and Jessie Sheehan,

as their PBL project.

We would like to thank Michael Butler for guiding us on the construction and helping out

with the frame and base of the coop. Shane Masson for assisting us with the construction

of the roof and walls and the installation of the garden bed for the silver beet, along with

the feeders and nesting boxes.

Finally we would like to thank Fizza Stratford for his expert advise

Children were excited to have a ride around the oval in a 1926 T Model Ford, saying just one more time, one more time, around the oval. Thank you Roger for this adventure

Tumby Bay & Districts OSHC & Vacation Care T2 wk. 2 2019

In Vacation Care we discussed the history of the ANZAC involvement in the Gallipoli landing. We displayed old artefacts including a 1916 German Helmet, a 1911 bellows camera, WW I seaman’s identity papers, watches and WW II canned US Army ration tins.

Children tried on the WW I German Helmet and were

surprised how heavy it was. Some parents commented that they would not be able to wear a helmet like this all

day, fighting in a war.

We welcomed a new family Isaac, Kaylee, Akey-la and Oliver to our OSHC family, they fitted right in, the freedom to move equipment, set up new areas as they made new friends.

Welcome to our new staff member

Carmen Richardson who is studying her Certificate in Children’s services

Thank you to Pei, Sarah, Anastasia you have all inspired the children to collaborate

together, share fun, excitement and new learning during Vac Care .

Thank you to the OSHC & Vac Care families for using our service during the holidays, we hope you have been inspired as your children have talked to you about what happens each day they attended. Please give us any feedback and suggestions so we can continue to cater for your needs. We averaged 8 children person session.

Sing Along at Senior Citizens Tuesday 14th May from 10:30 – 11:30 A bloke who entertains folks at nursing homes and other venues in Adelaide is visiting Tumby Bay. He is prepared to put on a small concert for our townspeople. Uringa Hostel residents and ‘Golden Oldies’ and ‘Jolly Days’ groups will be coming. Please come along and join in a good old fashioned ‘Sing-a-long’. You won’t be Disappointed, he has a good reputation in the Northern areas of Adelaide and Yorke Peninsula. Karyn Speed 0427 881920
