Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 14, 2018
I hope to return safely from my adventure in the
United Arab Emirates late on Tuesday this week if all
goes well. I anticipate having major jet lag for a while
but I’m sure it will be worthwhile.
Holy Ghost Fire Cleanup:
The week of Oct. 1-5 the following work was completed:
1. The duct work was installed. There are register
covers to put on still and the city inspection needs
to happen.
2. The new doors downstairs were stained and
finished.
3. The painting around the stenciling continued.
4. The plaster patching in the front stairwell was
completed.
5. Most of the register covers were put on. The
covers in the altar need to be done.
6. The electrical work involving installation of the
lights continued.
7. The opening in the choir loft for the new organ
was started. We had to move some electrical
conduit to finish the opening.
8. The finish painting continues.
The week of Oct. 8-12 we hope to complete the
following work:
a. Start the change order to install the drywall
above the altar.
b. Get the painting done in the main church.
c. Clean the sacristies.
d. Strip and wax the floors in the sacristies.
e. Finish installing the lights and exit signs.
f. Install the register covers to the new basement
duct work.
g. Remove the scaffolding.
h. Put up the statues.
i. Return contents.
j. Clean up the church and ready it for the floors to
be stripped and waxed.
HOLY WATER IS A SACRAMENTAL
“From long experience I have learned that there is nothing
like holy water to put devils to flight and prevent them
from coming back again. They also flee from the Cross, but
return; so holy water must have great virtue. For my own
part, whenever I use it, my soul feels a particular and most
notable consolation.” – St. Teresa of Avila
When we read this quotation we should be reminded
of the importance of holy water. We Catholics dip our
fingers in holy water and make the Sign of the Cross
when entering a church in order to recall our baptism
and our baptismal promises. It recalls ancient Jewish
rites of purification used in their religious practices.
Remember, our baptismal promises included
renouncing Satan and disdaining sin. We forget this,
however, and take holy water for granted most of the
time.
We must remember that holy water, through a priest,
is blessed by God in virtue of Christ’s baptism. The
Catholic Church possesses enormous power in being able
to impart sacramental grace—and holy water as a
sacramental receives its power through the prayer and
authority of the Church.
The old rite of blessing (which I still use) said over
water to make it holy contains prayers of exorcism. It
can banish demons, heal the sick, and send unwarranted
grace upon us—yet most of the time we cross ourselves
with this water without even thinking about how holy it
really is.
The fact of the matter is that holy water is a powerful
sacramental and we may use it daily. Holy water may
be used to bless people, places, and things that are used
by humans in their goal of glorifying God with their
lives.
Here are eight ways to use holy water in daily life:
1.) Bless yourself. 2.) Bless your house. 3.) Bless your
family. 4.) Bless your work space.
5.) Bless your car. 6.) Bless your vegetable garden. 7.)
Bless the sick. 8.) Bless your pets.
Here is a simple prayer to say when using holy water:
“By this holy water and by Your Precious Blood, wash
away all my sins, O Lord. Amen.”
There is no specific prayer to pray when using holy
water, other than making the Sign of the Cross.
Sister Mary Lily Uchena, A member of Ad Gentes
Missionaries will visit us at St. Stanislaus the weekend of
Sept. 20-21. This society was founded by Fr. Vitalis
Ejike Anyanike, a native of Nigeria and a priest of the
Archdiocese of Omaha. Ad Gentes Missionaries are
focused on serving the pastoral needs of African-
American communities and others with limited resources,
such as new immigrants, migrant workers and refugees
seeking asylum in the U.S. They also have apostolates in
Africa to evangelize and catechize. While we will not
be taking up a special collection as such, Sister Lily will
be present near the front door of the church at the 5
p.m. Mass on Saturday and the 8 a.m. Mass on Sunday
to share information and offer rosaries to those
interested. She will also be present at the Harvest
Dinner in the parish hall following the 10:30 Mass. She
will gratefully accept any donations you might feel
inclined to give. When I visited Nigeria 3 years ago her
brother hosted a magnificent reception for me at his
home.

believe that the cold and snow will be here soon. With that in
mind, now is the perfect time to clean out our closets to see what
we no longer need. The St. Vincent DePaul Society is preparing
for their annual winter coat giveaway to those less fortunate. We
are collecting new and gently used (clean, usable) winter items
such as: winter coats, winter hats, scarves, gloves, and snow boots.
We need items for all ages and sizes: infants, children, teens and
adults. We are also collecting nonperishable food items. Please
bring winter items to St. Stanislaus’ Cry Room now UNTIL
Sunday, October 28. Thank you so much for helping the less
fortunate of our community to keep warm.
Thank you to Fr. Sanderson, Pastor, and all who have
remembered me in prayers, prior to, and during my stay in the
hospital and rehab facility. May God bless you most abundantly!

ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL: Thank you to all who have made their gift to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal.
Participation is very important! Every gift, no matter how large or small makes a difference. Jesus tells us today that those
who sacrifice for the sake of the gospel will receive a hundred times more. May the gifts of prudence and wisdom help us to
extend God’s mercy to all through the ministries of our archdiocese.

“WHY AND HOW SHOULD I READ
THE BIBLE?” The bible, the Word of
God, is composed of the 46 books of the Old Testament and
the 27 books of the New Testament. What what do those
books mean to us as Catholic Christians? … and how is God
revealed to us through it? Do I need to understand what the
bible says to live my Catholic life as the Creator intends?
“Why and How Should I Read the Bible?” is going to be the
topic for this week’s Alpha group to discuss.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN A TIME OF PRAYER!
Deacon Al Aulner is leading a prayer time each week while
the Alpha group is meeting. We will pray together asking
God to deepen our faith and the faith of all in our families,
our parish and those who are making the Alpha sessions.
While the church is still under restoration the prayer
group will meet each week at Ron and Dorothy
Massow’s home, 5814 “T” St. ALL IN THE PARISH ARE
