Principal’s

Message

This week is another filled with activities and

excitement for students. On Monday, a Parkes

Police Youth Liaison Officer will talk to Years 5 to

10 about personal cyber safety and the law in

relation to using electronic devices. Mobile phones

seem to be as vital as oxygen to young people.

Therefore, it is important that they understand

that with each advancement in technology comes a

new set of laws and societal expectations. On

Tuesday, primary basketball clinics continue. On

Wednesday, a Parkes Vet will be talking to primary

school students about appropriate strategies when

confronted by aggressive dogs. On Friday,

Gobondery/NARRAF Cricket Gala Day. Also on

Friday, Mr Greg Fisher will be delivering a plane

load of donated school shoes.

Our students need to develop a high level of

awareness of cyber safety because of rapidly

advancing technology. Any person over 35 can

remember the bag phone. A mobile phone with a

battery that weighed about the same as a house

brick. Revolutionary at the time, but a dinosaur

when compared to modern devices.

The problem, I believe, with electronic

communication is, it is reducing the ability to wait

and be patient for a response. Also, the art of

starting and maintaining a conversation is under

threat. At times, I see students texting, snap

chatting etc to peers who are a few metres away.

Also, unfortunately they often use language and

tone that they would not use face to face because

of a misguided belief that the phone gives them

some sort of immunity. However, mobile phones

should not give any person immunity from

manners or the conventions of conversation and

the message sent is recorded for all time.

Before I employ any person at this school, I search

them on the net. I believe this is due diligence

because these people become the public face of

this school and involved in the education of yours

and my children. At times, I see activities,

comments or photos that reduce their suitability

for employment. These could have been some time

ago but are still in the public domain. Our students

need to be aware of this.

Thankfully, our school does not have a major

problem with cyber bullying. My policy on

inappropriate cyber communication is simple. If it

originates during school time, it is offensive, illegal

or threatening, the school will take action but I will

also report it to police because it is an offence. I

cannot make my stance any clearer and encourage

parents to report any inappropriate

communication your children receive. However, if

your child returns serve several times before the conversation becomes too hot for them it is hard

to argue they are completely innocent. Indeed, I

have a fridge magnet that states, if you think your

child is always completely innocent you want

to hope the barrister that defends them in the

future convinces the judge they are as well. I

think it is clear what this statement is saying.

Monitoring phone and net usage is difficult because

the very nature of the teenage brain is to try and

push the boundaries. However, it is simple in a

way, if you own the power that charges the device,

they are sleeping in your home, you set the

agenda.

In NSW government schools, the Principal in

consultation with the school community

determines if students can have phones at school.

Our current policy is that High School students are

allowed to use phones during breaks but strictly

not in class. As with most things, students are the

masters of their own destiny. If the vast majority of

students consistently adhere to this rule, no

problem occurs. If I need to change the rule, I can

100% assure students that I will have no problem

changing to a total ban on phones. At 52 years of

age, I can assure parents and students that I really

do not need the approval of teenagers or to be

popular for my self concept. I will make decisions I

believe are in the best interest of a positive learning environment.

Parkes Vet will talk to primary school students to

educate them about aggressive dogs. In 52 years on

this planet, I have not lived in a town with so many

useless barking pan lickers. An unfortunate recent

trend is, a few aggressive dogs allowed to roam the

the streets. Owning a dog is a personal choice, it

should not however impact upon the social

amenity of others. I have contacted the council,

police and Trundle Progress Association to try and

reduce what I believe is a problem for this town

and the safety of our children. Education, as with

most things is part of the solution so hopefully

these talks will make the next group of pet owners

more responsible. In fourth term this year, our

school will also take part in the Positive Pet

Ownership training module to further educate

students that with the right to own pets also

comes responsibility.

Few things shock me, but recently the minister

sent me in to buy my daughter shoes. I was

thinking $50 for a good pair. That would have been

true except for the word pair. It appears the era of

royal commissions, maybe there should be one

into children’s clothes and shoes. I can buy a T-

shirt for $20, more material, and more stitching

but a lower price than children’s clothing. Throw

on a label and the pixies are taking twice as much

out of your wallet. I am sure our corporate friends

in retail would not be making excessive profits so it must be a manufacturing problem. The school

shoes are made possible through the organisation

Threads Together and the generosity and vision

of Mr Greg Fisher. Mr Fisher is a former corporate

high flyer who now devotes his time and energy to

reducing disadvantage in this country. These shoes

will be available at heavily reduced prices or as a

short term loan as part of our uniform pool.

Remember, our school will be holding a clothes

giveaway on the 5th April.

On Saturday, I showed Wayne Thomson, General

Manager of Ruralaid, around our school. He was

extremely pleased with our efforts to keep our

school an oasis for children during this crippling

drought. This organisation has agreed to undertake

projects within our school. Ruralaid has changed

their service model to include community projects

as well as farm projects. I thank Mrs Hazel Walton

for helping to make this a reality.

This project will involve a team of up to fifty

people coming to Trundle for a week. It will be a

significant boost to the local economy, because

where possible, they use local suppliers and

contractors. They will also run community events

during their time here. I am very pleased that this

is happening because as I have said many times

before, outside money has a significant economic

multiplier effect. The help of Ruralaid also allows

us to bring forward many projects that were too

costly to complete in the short term.

Tzu Chi Australia is a Buddhist organisation with

members all around Australia. They will be visiting

our school on the 29th of March to inspect our

school for projects that could help the whole

community. I am very keen to establish irrigation

for a community vegetable plot that will provide

fresh vegetables to our school but also the excess

donated to the community. I believe this school

has the ability to help outside the classroom and

we should be a focal point of the community due to limited other services within our town. To date,

we have raised goods, services and money in

excess of $100 000 for our community.

I have made no secret of the fact that I believe the

standard of early childhood education in our

region needs to improve. This is not a criticism of

individuals or organisations but a general belief that

preschool students in the country deserve as good

a service as those in metropolitan areas. I do not

believe that is the case at this point and as an

educational leader in this town, I will do everything

in my power to obtain more for your children and

mine. Many children do not attend pre-school or

receive limited quality instruction by a trained

early childhood teacher. The result is often a lack

of core skills for learning when they enter school.

Thankfully, this school operates an outstanding

Kindergarten program and very quickly overcome

deficits.

Being proactive to try and improve this school and

the town in general exposes me to criticism and

complaints. In short if you do nothing, you are not

controversial but unfortunately you do not achieve

as much as is possible. Status quo is a seventies

rock band. It should not be a policy or mindset.

This school is willing to try new things and not

being afraid to fail, because even in failure you

learn how to move forward in the future. If people

want to find out information about the school

direction and ethos, ask myself or a member of the

executive, because teachers under the Code of

Conduct are not allowed to make public comment.

I am very happy to share my vision. This school

needs to be as good or better than any other

school in Australia.

K-6 Basketball This Tuesday, all primary students will be

participating in Basketball clinic.

Please remember to wear joggers.

Hatred, seems to have no geographical boundaries.

The shooting of 49 people in a place of worship in

New Zealand by an Australian citizen has allowed

the evil hand of terrorism to tighten its drip on

Australia. It saddens me that some low level

thinkers believe this event is some sort of payback

because of this ridiculous assumption that there is

a greater link to terrorism amongst people who

follow the Islamic faith. The IRA was planting

bombs in London for decades so should we be

more wary of Catholics? The notion is not even

worth a thought process. 1.8 billion people around

the world follow the Islamic faith, 229,000,000 in

Indonesia alone. If they were not good people,

there would be anarchy across the globe. When any person’s life is taken by another, it is tragic but

when a person’s life is taken because of their faith,

colour or race, it is particularly immoral. Access to

social media platforms assisted this sick individual

to recruit people into his brand of hatred. These

multinational highly profitable companies need to

take some responsibility for allowing a platform for

hatred.

Recently, my son Anthony had a serious

motorcycle accident, requiring helicopter transport

to Orange. The Trundle community has been

amazing in extending help and compassion to my

family. I especially would like to thank Peter Kelly

who cared for Anthony until he could be

transported to hospital, the staff at Trundle and

Orange Base Hospitals who gave him the best

quality care and Tamilla Bolam who opened her

home to Scarlett when we very much needed it.

The helicopter service is a credit to this country,

reducing the risk of living in the country as I

believe we received quicker, better service

through arriving as a trauma patient through the

helicopter service.

These unfortunate events are life changing not only

to the victim but the family because the reality hits

of the possibility of losing a child. My normal

thought process is, which one of my children will

be wiping the dribble away from my mouth and spending the remainder of my superannuation in

my old age, not the possibility of losing one of

them. As parents, you ask questions; have I been

too liberal with allowing motorcycles, hunting and

other risk taking activities. What is the balance?

One thing the doctors have made very clear to my

family is, without a properly fitting helmet, this

accident could /would have been fatal. I encourage

parents to insist that their children wear helmets

even for a short ride. There is not enough cotton

wool to completely risk free our children but there

are ways to reduce risk. Please parents, do not

simply hand down helmets to children but get

them fitted. A poorly fitting helmet could cause

additional damage so spend the money, it is a

fraction of the cost of the bike but is often

neglected.

Over the years, I have developed a strong dislike

for McDonalds because of the sugar and salt content. However, for a whole week, my family

lived at Ronald McDonald house in Orange.

Without this facility, the stress level generated by

this accident would have been much greater. Well

done to the volunteers and Ronald McDonald

house that helped in this difficult situation.

Still the happiest man in Trundle. If you believe that

I have a bridge in Sydney to sell you.

Weekly Woof

Woof Woof awards: 5 happy woofs to Tamilla, Hailey, Izack &

MacKenzie Bolam for looking after me when the

family were in Orange with a potential Crusty

Demon. It was lovely to have someone who placed my food nicely into the bowl. I am back for the

whole week this week so I am looking forward to

seeing my friends. I cannot understand why I was

left behind. However my stress level has been

reduced by chewing the hose, shoes, anything

plastic and something on a tyre.

5 happy woofs for the staff at Trundle Hospital.

Southo said he has seen them too much since

coming to Trundle. A bit nasty I would have

thought.

5 happy woofs to the community service people.

Andrew rang Southo on Friday night, praising their

attitude and effort. Southo said those students are

learning to contribute to a community and creating

a moral contextual framework for a future life.

Funny, he made me stay home with diarrhoea,

sounds like verbal diarrhoea to me.

4 happy woofs to school to work students for

building seating for the oval. This helps everyone

whilst building your skills. Sitting must be good

because Southo is always yelling sit down to the

dog across the street.

15 happy woofs to Mr Grady for starting to lay

the new turf around the multi-purpose court. This

will make this area ready for the fitness trail.

Another asset to the town public education is providing.

5 cranky barks for those people who when they walk through the school at night drop their bottles

on the oval. There are eight motion activated

cameras around the school. An 8 by 10 glossy

photo will be published on the front page of the

newsletter of repeated offenders.

Sun Safe Policy This term is a No Hat No Play term. Students

MUST wear a wide brimmed hat. This means that if

they do not have a hat, they cannot participate in

any outdoor activities including lunch time play. We

keep a small selection of spare hats for those

students who accidently forget their hats. These

hats are washed regularly but are not to be used

every day by the same students. We will endeavour

to call parents to let them know their child has

forgotten their hat so that it can be found. Please

make sure you put your child’s name inside their

hat.

Secondary

Congratulations to the secondary students who

participated in Western Area swimming on Friday.

All I have heard is positive comments about your

effort, sportsmanship and general fantastic

demeanour!

Today our Year 7-10 students have a cyber-safety

talk. As recently demonstrated from the “Momo”

challenge the cyber safety is a huge concern for our

current student and future generations. Many

students think that because they can use Facebook/

Instagram/Youtube that they are experts of the

internet. There is a risk that people of all ages can

fall for scams and hacks, lose money, or be

psychologically injured. However, even ignoring the vast amount of advantages that the internet offers

us, so much of our everyday life has migrated onto

it forcing most people to use it daily. Because of

this it is vital that our students are able to navigate

it competently and successfully.

For more information on Cyber-Safety there is an

article on the Western Access Facebook page.

Tuesday we will have the WAP students in Year 11

Construction at our school doing a practical day.

One of the great advantages of Stage 6 at Trundle

is the access to a wide variety of subjects including

Vocational Education Training. Our students

completing one of the VET subjects leaves school

with a nationally recognised certificate in their

chosen subject. Thanks to Miss Rowlands for her

organisation and running of this day.

A reminder that as our term is progressing I am

approving more assessments for our 7-10 students.

Please keep an eye on the newsletter and support

your students as the term progresses. We will

keep the same format as 2018 and only have one

set of formal school exams in Week 5 of Term 4.

As always if there are any issues please contact me

at school.

Have a great week
