Principal’s
Message
This week, the University of Canberra is visiting for
two days. Dr Tracey Logan will be conducting
research on how students solve spatial problems.
This will help us plan effective teaching and learning
programs that target identified weaknesses but
build on the strengths as well.
One strength that is obvious, is the quality of
classroom teaching and learning. This is particularly
evident in growth in reading in primary. The growth
identified in the latest data is outstanding across all
students. This is in-line with our school plan.
However, we are achieving our milestones well in
advance. I am particularly pleased with the growth
across K-2, which is incredible. Students and
teachers have been willing to jump over a very high
bar and as a reward, I will be setting it higher. No
thanks necessary!
Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of
accompanying the Super 8’s Cricket sides to
Dubbo. I was with our junior boys who achieved
second in all games. One of the many pleasing
aspects of the day was the spirit our students
displayed and the good hearted banter on the field and the bus. I can honestly say, it is a pleasure to be
around the current students we have in the school.
Also, the amount of laughter coming from staff
rooms and classrooms is pleasing to witness. I
believe it indicates good school spirit. The
comment of the day goes to Sam Charlton when
asked by the team to hit a six against a bowler who
was reasonably rapid. Sam replied ‘ I will be happy
to see it and to hit it’.
The installation of our new air-conditioning is well
ahead of schedule. The electrical company has
openly praised our students for their flexibility and
trustworthiness. The contractor has commented
that workers feel confident to leave tools on the
job site, speeding up the installation process. It
disappoints me, but does not surprise me, that this
cannot happen on other sites. An indication of how
good the new system is, students were commenting
about how cold it is in the primary classrooms. I
can turn that around by reminding them how hot it
was before and we have not really had hot nights
followed by very hot days yet. Welcome to the new
world students where every child deserves to learn
in a comfortable environment, regardless of where
they live.
On Thursday, the next follow up hearing screening
will take place through Marathon Health. The
audiologists will be screening for conductive and
sensory -neural hearing loss. Unfortunately, they
cannot screen for matrimonial deafness, which is
common but unfortunately has no cure.
This year, our school has provided free of charge
vision and hearing screening. Some students have
been identified with minor to moderate issues.
Poor sight and vision are extremely common causes
of learning and behavioural problems in children,
however most are easily corrected. These services
are outside the core curriculum, but I believe will
fill an obvious deficit within our community. Next
year, the dental van will be visiting again for checks,
small work such as fillings and cleans. Again, this is a
service provided by your local public school.
In some further good news, the Department
Hearing Team will visit our school this term to
deliver education programs to increase awareness
of Otitis Media. This is an extremely common and
painful problem caused by an infection behind the
ear drum. Every doctor and nurse will now be
muttering that it is more complex than that. The
non-complex aspect of it is, Otitis Media effects
student learning and it is easily prevented through a
crunchy breakfast, blowing the nose rather than
sniffing, and movement.
A few weeks ago, I was visited by a physiotherapist
who clearly stated that a significant issue for young
people’s health is that our modern society is
restricting the amount of movement, especially
lateral movement. The human body was not designed to sit for long periods of time, but most
modern devices reduce the amount of necessary
movement . An example is the Google Nest, where
you do not even have to physically turn off devices.
Funny, teenagers developed this skill many years
before Google! The serious aspect of this is many
of our children are growing up with significant

posture and spinal issues because of increased
technology. Next time your child is using an iPad,
take note of the angle of the spine and be
prepared to be shocked. There is now a
recognised physical disability caused by over-
exposure to iPads. Maybe Darwin was right with
evolution.
Last week, every child and staff member was
issued with a fly net. The flies at the moment are
horrendous. On Tuesday, you could not stand still
to eat your sandwich, but they did not go near my
plain wrapped supermarket pie. It could be a
message there! Many children and teachers are
way too cool to put on the net, but I am not one of them. The flies are easily caught in the mouth
but it takes a lot to get a meal and the legs tickle
the throat on the way down. I encourage students
to utilise the nets, especially during sport.
Recently I have been lucky enough to meet a 21
year old grazier from Menindee, Kate McBride.
When a person moves beyond 50 years very few
people shock, or genuinely impress you. This
young lady has a passion and intelligence well
beyond her years. Kate genuinely believes in rural
Australia and the concept of equality of
opportunity between country and city areas.
Recently, in the Year 12 farewell speech, I said one
voice can unite the collective to bring about
genuine change. This young lady, I believe, is
certainly making a difference by highlighting the
needs in the country. I just hope she maintains her
raw honesty and is not corrupted by political
correctness or the temptation to accept a high
paying corporate job that effectively makes her a
mouthpiece for business.
Over the last 12 months, I have become even
more convinced that family farming operations are
under severe threat of extinction. This, I believe,
has led to the catch cry ‘get big or get out’ which I
shudder every time I hear it. The problem with
this movement is that large corporations do not
put backsides on seats at the local school, or shop in the local businesses. I wonder if smaller
operations have the same voice with government
and farming federations as do the bigger irrigated
operations in the north. This may be to the
detriment of towns such as Trundle. I could be
wrong, but nothing during Q&A convinced me that
all farmers have an equal voice across Australia.
Last week, we were privileged to have both our
Federal and State members of parliament visit our
school. Mr Donato State Member for Orange,
indeed visited twice last week. I was very
impressed with the commitment of both members
and their willingness to take questions on a variety
of issues. I have to walk a very fine line because
Principals are not allowed to criticise the
government of the day. However, asking questions,
I believe, is not criticism if they are not personally
or politically directed. The following are questions
I asked, which I realise move across all levels of
government, but I am also sure they talk to each
other:
Why are completely unproductive farms still
receiving rate notices based on their book
value rather than their current productive
value during this drought?
Is it possible to increase or start travel
subsidies for parents to drive young isolated
people to places of work. If a young person
lives in Trundle but has an apprenticeship in
Parkes, the cost of travel moves their
income very close to welfare. Hardly fair, or
an incentive.
The possibility of the establishment or
increase in tele-psychology services for those
people in the area experiencing poor mental
health.
I have received a verbal guarantee from these
people that these issues and many other side
issues I raised, will be considered.
Last week, four companies in the panel beating
industry Bear Auto Group, Action Smart group,
Aussie Hail Pty Ltd and Smart Repair donated
$40,000 to our school to continue our community
support during this drought. This is humbling
because I believe it is an indication that these large
players in the auto industry believe our school is
making a difference during this drought. As a
school, we have been proactive in seeking support,
rather than sitting back expecting it to occur
because we exist. This wonderful country has enormous generosity, but the narrative needs to
be generated and promoted rather than sitting
back and expecting the golden egg to land in your
lap.

The problem with actively seeking change/help is, it
exposes me and my family to criticism from some
who attack the person, rather than the issue or
performance. This is an unfortunate part of my job,
and I expect Australian culture.
Last week we received a visit from Gus & Jess from
Triple MMM, the Moonman In The Morning show, in
Sydney. Gus delivers an internationally acclaimed
program designed to give young men strategies to
express emotions and fears. In short, communicate.
This is to try to reduce the chronic rates of mental
health issues and suicide in young men. Gus
Morland has agreed to deliver this program free of
charge in Trundle.
On Friday this week, we are holding a ‘Monster
giveaway’ of clothes and other items (a small
donation would be appreciated). All community
members are welcome.

Ajax’s
Weekly Woof
Woof Woof Awards: 500 happy woofs to JR Electrical for the
professional installation of the refrigerated air-
conditioning. It might seem cold now but wait until
we get a hot night and the rooms are warm from
the first bell. That is when we will appreciate the
new system.
500 happy woofs to the front office staff and
Richard for their continued work on drought relief.
Southo said, he does not think some other schools
could achieve the sustained support and the
goodwill of individuals working towards the
collective good. I think that means, he is happy.
600 happy barks to our former Year 11 students
for the enthusiasm they have started their Year 12
studies. This is a very positive sign for future
success.
500 happy barks to all students that are wearing
hats and sun screen. If you do not think you need a
hat and sun screen, put an apple in the sun for two
days. Then draw a face on the apple and that will
be you in the future.
500 angry woofs to those students who leave
their rubbish near the sensory gym and basketball
court. Southo only gets cranky a few times a year,
but hang on, it is coming.
5000 angry woofs to the installation company
who has left the footpath in front of the Ag plot in
terrible condition. I wonder, if this town was
located in the Eastern Suburbs of City or Southern
Highlands, would there still be a big hole in the
footpath? I think not.
This drought is not a one off event. Our ability to survive through this drought will allow us to be
better when the next one comes. Even a Labrador
understands that things are getting bad because three months ago, I was swimming in parts of the
golf course dam, I am now walking.
Until next week, Ajax
Bark with laughter with
Ajax:

Sun Safe Policy This term is a No Hat No Play term. Students
MUST wear a wide brimmed hat. This means that if
they do not have a hat, they cannot participate in
any outdoor activities including lunch time play.
We keep a small selection of spare hats for those
students who accidently forget their hats. These
hats are washed regularly but are not to be used
every day by the same students. We will endeavour
to call parents to let them know their child has
forgotten their hat so that it can be found.
Please make sure you put your child’s name inside their hat.
Kindergarten/Year 7 Transition This week will be the third week of Kindergarten/
Year 7 Transition sessions that will run throughout
the term.
This year the sessions will run from 8:55 – 11:20
for Preschoolers – Year 6.
This will allow the Pre-schoolers and Year 6 to
engage in some fantastic activities to ensure the
transition from both Preschool and Primary School
is a smooth and enjoyable experience.
All classes in primary will be moving up into the
next group for these sessions. It is a great way for
the students to practise being in a new class.
Swimming For Sport This Friday the 8th
November will be our first
swimming for sport. We are
reducing the size of our
groups by sending one group to the pool at 1:00pm.
This group will return to school at 2pm, have lunch and return to class for half an hour.
The second group will walk to the pool as per usual
and can be picked up at 3pm at the pool.
Alternatively, if your child catches a bus home, they
will be picked up at the pool.
Please check your child’s note carefully. If there are
any changes to your child’s afternoon arrangements
during the swimming season, please call the front
office on 68921303.
Year 3-6 Excursion to Canberra All the arrangements for our Year 3-6 excursion to
Canberra on the 13th November are being finalised
over the next week.
An invite to an information session
sent out last week. This information
session will provide the students
and parents with a detailed itinerary
and provide all information regarding the excursion.

Secondary
This week in Secondary we have Year 12 WAP
Study Days occurring at Tottenham, Yeoval, Peak
Hill and Tullamore. Trundle will host students and
staff on Friday. These study days give teachers the
opportunity to teach face to face lessons.
Our transition program will also continue on
Wednesday with Year 7 2020 getting to experience
a variety of subjects throughout the term to
prepare for their transition into High School next
year.
All 7-10 students are reminded that our yearly
exams will commence next week and into week
six. Students will be given a hard copy of the exam timetable and are encouraged to revise their exam
study notes handed out by their teachers.
Reminder: RSVP’s for the Senior Dinner are
due tomorrow, Tuesday 5th November.

Trundle Junior Cricket On Saturday the Trundle Juniors played the Waratahs at Condobolin in very blustery conditions. Wa-
ratahs won the toss and elected to bat. A persistent Trundle bowling attack kept the scoring low un-
til Hunter Laing (32 runs) and Gus Laing (7 runs NO) combined to post a respectable score of 69
runs for Waratahs.
In reply Trundle made their intentions clear batting aggressively and passing the total in the 14th over
making 2 wins from 2 games, a positive start to the season for the Trundle Juniors.
Runs for Trundle: Jason Gerry 9, Sam Charlton 8 NO, Tyrone Kirk 6, Reuben Kelly 4 NO and
Aliethea Stokes 4 NO
Wickets for Trundle: Reuben Kelly, Sam Charlton, Tyrone Kirk, Charlie Anderson, Charlie Taunton,
