Gratularer med dagen!

From the President: Elaine Homan

Dear Members,

Hurrah for April, the month that we can really think,

SPRING IS HERE!!! Lots will be happening from now until June. So be alert! I will do my best to get the Trollheim News on a timely schedule so you can always be aware of the meetings and events going on. I am just so busy!

March was a busy month but I think I am back on track now with the newsletter. March was our Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner at the General Meeting, and we had a nice turn-out. Also, in March, the Lodge had 1 private rental party, and 2 Friends of Trollheim rentals. (Friends of Trollheim refers to organizations or people who have connection to Trollheim Lodge and its History and Culture.) More about these two rentals events in this newsletter.

Dameklubben Tea will be held the first Saturday of April. Louise Bath will lead a Rosemaling Seminar on behalf of Vesterheim Museum at our lodge, April 20-24th. Our 44th Anniversary Dinner and Awards will be held on April 16th, at our General Meeting. We will start the meeting early at 6:45 pm so we can start the dinner by 7 pm.

Mark your calendars for May 19th; we have officially set the date. And, if you want to devote your weekend for the Syttende Mai celebration, don’t forget that Fjelldalen Lodge in the Highland Ranch area will have a Syttende Mai Picnic and Parade on May 20th. Let’s all do one or both of these events! (see Fjelldalen RSVP form in this newsletter!)

SON Trollheim Lodge 6-110 General Meeting;

6:45 pm (early time!); April 16, 2018 Catered meal from Boston Market

$10 donation suggested

Please see the flyer on page 5 also. The program will be the celebration of our 44th Anniversary and Awards ceremony. We will also welcome the new members from 2017 and early 2018 who have yet to visit our building. Invitations have been sent to them. Please join us and if you have been a member for awhile, please bring some of your memories about the lodge. We can visit with each other and share memories. Don’t forget to arrive a bit early so we can eat by 7 pm.

Sunshine Corner By Bev King

On Thursday evening, March 29, Annette Molter, daughter of member Bernice Molter, and sister to former Trollheim President Diane Molter, passed away from complications of pneumonia. Annette was a member for several years at Trollheim and often accompanied her mother and sister to events and meetings. Many of us remember her. An obituary is planned for printing in the May newsletter to be out at the end of April with information about a Celebration of Life Ceremony at a later date. Please send condolences to the family at: 8670 Edison St.; Thornton, CO 80229-4919.

Notes: Bev Moe announced at our last general meeting that the King Soopers Cards have already started to pay off! We received a check for $250+ that was delivered to the treasurer at the March meeting. Keep up the good work! We hope others will help us out by using these cards at King Soopers. Call Bev Moe for more info. Also, Bev Moe has sold the last two Tidløs CD’s. The sale of the 30 CDs given to us by the band is designated for the Scholarship Fund. The band group, Tidløs will not be coming to Denver this year. They were offered a chance for a musical tour in Norway for 2018 and opted to stay home to do this, according to Jan Martin Hammersland, the business manager. Trollheim Lodge is glad to hear that the group is getting the recognition it deserves, even though we miss out on another performance. We will keep them in mind for another year!

New Members!

Yes, we have been slowly gaining new members since 2017. However, Trollheim has been in arrears in not inviting them to an initiation to our lodge. We don’t mean to neglect our newest members, but we are running out of volunteers to organize these extra meetings. As President, I would like to invite all new members who have joined in the years 2017 and recently in 2018 to our next meeting on April 16th. If there are members from previous years who have not been to the lodge, please accept this invitation, too. The April 16th General Meeting is also our 44th Anniversary Celebration. We will be awarding pins for members who have reached a 5, 10, 15…45-yr anniversary. A small catered dinner will be served. A $10 donation is suggested. Please join us for our yearly celebration of our lodge! See the flyer on page 5 for more info. Elaine Homan, President

Danish Fastelavn Celebration Mar 4, 2018 Danish Club Rental

If you happened to drive by the lodge on Sunday, Mar. 4th, you may have been surprised to see the Danish flag on one of our flagpoles and about 40 adults in the front yard watching 20+ children of various ages bat at two “fastelavn barrels” suspended between our flagpoles. Just like the piñatas of Mexico, these barrels were filled with candy so the youth really got into the game!

Inside, in the main hall, there were craft tables set up for colors, stamps, colored papers and different items for each child to decorate his or her own Fastelavn Ries. These are small branches from bushes and symbolize the “whips” to chase winter and all the evils back into the woods so Spring can appear. A cat traditionally was also a symbol, representing winter, and occupied the interior of the Fastelavn barrels that were suspended many years ago. As the children beat the barrels, they released the cat who was then chased into the woods with the branches, symbolizing the flight of winter’s evil.

The younger participants of the event were encouraged to dress in costumes, much like an American Halloween. There were tables of snacks, fruits and Danish pastries and a tasty hot chocolate was served. The hall was big enough for the craft area, a dining area as well as open space for the costumed children to have room to play. Trollheim Lodge had its own League of Super Heroes for the day! (Princess Ilsa in the picture at right, offered to light the stoves for Michael Homan since she could make fire or ice with her hand! She really got into her role!)

Kudos to Marete Sahlberg and the rest of the Danes who quickly pulled out a new celebration from their heritage. It’s an event I hope will last for a few generations. Fastelavn is based on the traditions of Shrove Tuesday and pre-christian beliefs in Denmark.

(note: no cats were harmed during this event!)

Fjellborg Vikings at Trollheim for Practice

May 10 & 11, 2018

The Fjellborg Viking Re-enactors once again rented the Trollheim Main Hall at the beginning of March for practice and evaluations with experts and visitors from Canada, Missouri, and California.

A few of our members came out this year to watch for a few hours and had questions answered by individual members. The purpose of the Viking Re-enactors is to not only provide entertainment, but to educate their visitors about the everyday living, the foods, and skills of the Scandinavian culture, and their history. Visitors were encouraged to examine the safety of the weapons. Blades, axes and spears must be blunted according to the International Rules to avoid accidental harm. However, these are otherwise real weapons, with weight.

Training this year included practice with the shield wall; and several members trained in 2-man and 3-man opponents action. Some of these moves were very interesting. Since it was a beautiful weekend, several Vikings spent time outside practicing their archery skills, and also using the slings. The Vikings gathered up stones from our yard for the slings which one member constructed from hemp and jute fibers.

For lunches, usually cheeses and flatbread were available along with fruits and other tasty things that were available during the Viking Era. (OK, maybe the “Gatorade” bottles weren’t authentic, but I pretended I was looking at wineskins full of mead. Let’s face it; it was warm and the men and women worked hard and were thirsty!)

According to Trollheim member Ron Taylor, he saw many of the Fjellborg Vikings who were ready for the St. Patrick’s Parade in Denver the next Saturday.

From member, Loren Schultz, aka Lodin Myklebust, leader:

Members of Fjellborg Vikings, affiliate of The Vikings - Vinland and its international parent The Vikings – UK, would like to express our appreciation towards SON Trollheim Lodge for your continued support in our shared preservation of Scandinavian culture. Fjellborg continues to promote public awareness that “The Golden Viking Age” and its people who were more than conquerors, but rather explorers, farmers, merchants, innovators as the most influential peoples in cultural development from the close of Roman conquest up to the Colombian expansion into the Americas. As for our combat training, this is intended to teach brief, safe theatrical performances to attract the public while our Living History

Encampment provides all day educational exploration of Scandinavian life of that period.

“State of the Lodge” A report of 2017

By President Elaine Homan

It has already been a busy year for Trollheim since Jan. 1st 2018! This report has been late in coming, but I feel, as your president, I should report to you how Trollheim fared in 2017.

In 2017, we gained 12 new members. However, we witnessed the passing of 12 members of Trollheim in that same period. In addition, several members were suspended for nonpayment of dues, although many of them did redeem their membership, but we ended the year with 5 less members than 2016.

Hall damage to our roof in early May was significant enough that our roofers applied for and received payment for the additional replacement of the metal roof over the Main Hall. We received from Liberty Mutual Insurance funds totaling near $85,000. This amount covered the payment to A to Z Roofing who was selected to do the job. The $1000 deductible was reimbursed to Trollheim General Fund by the Trollheim Building Corporation (TBC).

Speaking of TBC, it received $2,402.00 from rentals generated by Trollheim during the year. Monetarily, in addition to the $1000 transfer for the roofing deductible, TBC also gifted 3 non-profit organizations each with $350 as part of their charitable contribution responsibilities. TBC held a successful Trollheim yard clean-up day in April. Harlan Hagen headed our Adopt-a-Street program April-Nov in 2017

Cultural events created a variety of reasons to visit the lodge or attend functions elsewhere, with 2 rosemaling seminars, a band concert from the Norwegian Christian-rock band, Tidlos; a bunad seminar, A Scandinavian Culture Day at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Estes Park Scandinavian Midsummer Festival, and for the younger set, Barnelopet, and Trollheim’s Family Jul Party. Also, all our general meetings had wonderful presentations, thanks to the efforts of Louise Bath, our Cultural Director.

The Lutefisk Dinner (Jan), Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner (Mar), Dameklubben Tea (Apr), Smorgasbord (May), and Walleye Dinner (Sept) all were sold out and, after costs, all the dinners netted over $15,000.

Trollheim’s Christmas Fair/Butikken Christmas Sale had a great turnout and income and did a wonderful

job kick-starting a very profitable Christmas shopping season for the Butikken. Norske Butikken also reaped the benefits from having more “public” exposure from many of our rentals and events in 2017. With out-of-towners here for several events and those who came for special classes or rentals, we had many people who “forgot” that Trollheim had a gift store! Special thank-you to the shoppers from the Rosemaling classes, and the Finlandia and Danish groups who rented our hall for Christmas.

At the beginning of the year, the board created two small funds: the 1st one was for Kitchen Pans that were needed for the 2018 Lutefisk Dinner. The 2nd one is for the establishment of a Dues Assistance fund for our members who are terminally ill and can’t pay to keep their membership. This fund will pay for 1 year of membership to those who qualify. I am please to say that Trollheim members saw fit to support these two funds with several small and large donations. The kitchen Pans fund allowed us to buy the needed pan plus a bit extra for some extra kitchen supplies, allowing for a very successful 2018 Lutefisk Dinner. We have used funds for 1 person’s dues in 2017 and will carry the remainder into 2018 for any such incidents in the future (about $120.) Thank you, Trollheim Members, for your gifts to both these funds.

Thirty CDs that Tidløs Band gave Trollheim to sell, were designated for Scholarship Fundraising by the board. At $10 apiece, Bev Moe, chair of the Scholarship Fund committee was on a mission to sell them all. She had 2 left by early 2018, which she sold quickly, earning $300 for our scholarship fund.

All in all, Trollheim’s efforts in earning money from it’s activities worked well. Every event either broke even or generated enough profit after expenses. This is a good thing.

What wasn’t so good was the on-going expenses for our regular utilities bills, and other expenses to keep up the lodge are higher for the most part than previous years. Fees and Permits that are needed also keep rising. The 2017-2018 board is full of members who are new to this and we missed several things along the way, leading to some penalties that needed to be paid. Equipment failed periodically, outdated items were crammed into any available nook or cranny. Trollheim has been weighted by a lot of stuff that it no longer needs. This is also costing us money because it takes lots of time to sort the relevant from the archaic in this lodge

(continued next page)

(continued from previous page)

By the time what is needed is found, another late fee is assessed. Trollheim lodge and its members need to get a better understanding of its finances, and its Bylaws, itsbuilding and its property so it can be maintained more efficiently.

Trollheim Lodge had no Bingo funds account to fall back on in 2017. Since Bingo had effectively ended in 2014, those funds had remained in a separate account to be used when needed by the lodge. By the beginning of 2017, the funds were exhausted. There is no longer an account locally to fall back to for extra funding. We still maintain a sizeable account at Sons of Norway that was funded years ago from the “good” years of Bingo income, but that is for major expenses and withdrawals are decided by the board of directors.

Presently, our income from our share of the dues, and our dinner profits, etc. will not cover our yearly expenses. If sales remain good in Norske Butikken, the extra income may continue to pull us through each year as it did for 2017. Hats off to our Butikken team and managers, Joan, Carolyn and Alice who have maintained the store for several years on a strictly volunteer basis. It’s been an honor to serve as your president in 2017. I hope 2018 will be another good year for our lodge! Sincerely, Elaine Homan, President

This and that…

Ole and Sven grabbed their poles and headed out to do some ice fishing. As they started an auger to make a hole in the ice they heard a loud voice from above say, "There are no fish under the ice."

Ole an Sven moved about 25 feet over and started to make another hole. The voice said a little stronger, " There are no fish under the ice."

They both looked around and then looked up. Ole said in a humble voice, "Are you God?"

The voice spoke back, "No, I'm the ice rink attendant."
