We hear that Mr. Blaker thinks of locating at Kingwood. We hope this is true, and we will extend to him a right hearty welcome. We understand that the T. K. it F. railroad will issue another time table about the 10th of next month. After that date the trains will leave King- wood in the morning instead of Tnn- nelton. This change of schedule will be the fifth in about six months- Contrary to expectation Judge Hoke wiped up the floor with A. G. Dayton on the contest for the Judi- cial nomination in the Preston-Tay- lor-Bareour district. Uncle Billy Dawson was evidently thar.— Regis- ter. You can bet your life lie was thar. Judging from the number of flag poles being raised, the Democracy of this county was never in such fine fighting condition ns it is this year. A fishing party consisting of Mrs. Margaret Crane, Misses Nora Jack* son Lillie Campbell, of Wheeling, Miss Alice Fan], of Ncwburg, and Messrs John M. Crane, James A. They had good luck fishing for they returned with quite a number of tho “speckled !)eauties.” Pole Ruining si Keritvlle. Baturbay next bids fair to bo a ga- la day at Reedsville and will long he remembered by the citizens of that town. On that day the Democrats and Republicans will both raise flag poles. The Democrats have selected a fine hickory about one hundred feet long which they propose to raise in honor to the “Man of Destiny," Thurman, Wm. L. Willson, Fleming, i and Reform. Thin will he the first Democratic pole ever raised in Reeds- ville. Speakers have been secured for the occasion and everything bids fair to be a grand success. Bince writing the above, we learn | that the Republicans will not raiso ! their pole until the next Saturday. IfMIkilH Train* os Ur H. A 0. R. K. The first of (he Baltimore and Ohio Company,s new vestibnled trains has been turned out of Mt. Clare shops and an experimental trip was made with it^ August 16. The train was 1 run from Baltimore to Koyaer, 215 ! miles, in five boors. Ou the line be- tween Baltimore ami Keyser are some of tho shapeat curves ou tho B. A O. I road, but notwithstanding the high rate of speed maintained the sway, ing of the train was scarcely percep- tible, the oscillation at the top of the car not excedlng six inches. This test fully demonstrates what has heretofore beeu claimed tor the vestibule device and that is, that it effectually obviates the swaying mo- tion iuparted to the train in rounding curves at high speed. The new tram will be immediately placed in regu- lar service between Philadelphia and Chicago. All other through trains on tho B; A O. will bo fitted with the vestibule : appliance as rapidly ns possible, and within the next sixty days it is thought to have the work completed. A I trndisb Art. Some fiend in human form at temp- ted to wreck tho T. K. & F. train just tho other side of Charles Craig’s last Monday. In order to throw the train off tho track, n spike wa9 driven be- tween the rails and left about two inchcshigh and was not discovered un til after the engino had struck it. For- tunately the spike was bent over up- on the rail sufficiently that tho train passed over w ithout being derailed. Had the inhuman person suceeedod in his design undoubtedly severel lives would have been sacrificed. This, wo understand, is tho second attempt at train wrecking at that place, and steps should bo taken by tho company to bring tho guilty per- son to justice. Klg Uatcr In Krucclon. News reached us last Thursday that the heavy rnius had done consid- erable damage in the lower end of the county, especially along the Big Sandy valley. That stream waa the highest ever known—the water stand- ing three feet deep in Armstrong’s store, which stands seventy feet from the hank of the creek. Many of the goods were damaged. The Iron bridge was almost carried away, but can he repaired in a short time. Mr. Beeghly lost five larg^* hogs, one of them weighing at least five hundred pounds. The families of Messrs Cuntner, Bright, Bower muster, Fear* er, Silbaugh and Michael were taken from their houses in boats. Fortun- ately no lives were lost and uo houses carriedoff. When the water subsided, piles of drift-wood and rubbish were left in the streets. Besides the damage done in this county, Wheeling was again visited by a flood and great damage done. Naperlnlrnrnt Min Iter HrMuns. Wc are reliably informed that Mr. Gus J. Shatter, superintendent aivd conductor on the T. K.dt F. Railroad, has sent his resignation to President Whitcscarver, to take ettect the 1st day of September. Mr. Shaffer, since he has had control of the road, has done everything In his power to not only make it pay, but liaa been cour- teous and obliging to a degree that bus won him many friends, an 1 it is with regret that those friends learn of his determination to leave the road. Who his successor will be wc have not as yet learned, but wc hope the company will make a good selection. As to conduclorahip, if the manag- ers of the road will psrdon us, we would suggest oue who is already an employee, for that position—one who would not only be n faithiul and reli- able man, hut would also please the patrons of the road as few others would. Ellis Durr, wc think, has by his faithful services as brakeman fairly earned the position that could now be given him. IJo has hail sever al years experience in railroading on the B, A O. which makes him still more competent to fill the positron than if ho had never done anything of the kind. Wc hope the company will act on our suggestion and ap- point Ellis as conductor on the road. AtlrmplrS Kohbfrjr •( 11 Won Mills. fyiceinl to the Arfftu. Thcclosingof the ten week's term of school, held here by Profs. Hare and Jackson, was a very entertaining, and certainly a very interesting one. Although the earliest part of the day made its appearance with a heavy fop, it gradually grew brighter till the hour arrived that tho students and teachers gathered at the old school- house for tho last time. The ringing of the bell struck deep in that foun- tain of the soul that always carries a deep sigh to the heart on such occa- sions; but these thoughts were dis- persed by the singing of that old fa- miliar hymu * Shall We Gather at the River,” after which the Profs, pro- ceeded with the usual forenoon reci- tations. As each class was excused the faces of all wore the sad expres sion of "tiik i.ast timk.” At 11 :15 tho classes wore all hoard, and Prof, llare gave the school a lecturo that was certainly remarkable for the pure- ness of thought uot only on the prin- ciples of gaining mu education but also advico to the grand success of life at large, giving good advico to the young ladies, and also warning the young men of the dreadful preci- pice they arc sure to plunge over if thoy should ever attempt to follow the muddy stream of lulcmperanco, whose waters are ns poisonous as the deadly Strychnine, and whose banks nre lined with thousands of reptiles whoso eyes aro as piercing ns the glittering sun and whose form is greater than that of the Boa-Constrlo tor or the An acondas. After giving this advice, he dismissed tho school, a part of which was now in tears and the rest with quivering lip. Iu addi- tion to the common school branches the pupils had the advantage of sev- eral good lessons on elocution, taught by Mrs. John Crane. At the begin- ning of the school she announced that she would give an entertainment at tho close of the term, and also ofTcrod two prizes—the first was five dollars in gold and the second a fine bo >k on elocution. Those who entered the contest consisted of Miscs Jennie Names, Mattie Coperaan, Kfllo Feath- er, Oda Metzlor, A. E. Michael Mo* eea Lee and VV. ,K. Michael. This conUbl was held .in the afternoon. The house w as crowded at 1:30 p, m. At 2 o’clock the Bchool opened with a piece of music played by threo of the bc.-t musicians in the state— Profs. Porter and Jackson and John Crane. The contest lasted about one hour and thirty minutes, after which the judges decided that Min? Edie Feather, merited the first prize a tie between Miss Jennie Names and Mr. A. E. Michael for the second. The pieces recited were all very good, and the participants showed no sign of embarrassment. Mrs. Crane is cer- tainly a very useful and gen »rous woman, and has the thanks of all the students. Prof. liar3 also gavo two prizes to the ones who made the best progress in arithmetic, and after a close examination they were awarded to Miss Lillie Elliott of the ladies and Mr, George White of the boys class These prizes consisted of two books of poems. The enthusiasm of tho teach- ors was readily noted by the worthy instructors, who found some difficulty in reaching a favorable point from which to exhibit their avoirdupois, owing to the crowded front—especially Mr. Shownltor. The Institute was opened by brief remarks from Superintendent Squires, followed by Profs. Miller and Sbowal- (er. Secretaries : -Collins and Liz- zie Shaffer. Tho afternoon was pleasantly and instructively spent in alternate talks by tho instructors on tho topics as laid down in the program. Tho ovening exercise was unusually pleasant; made so by Mrs. John M. Crane's recital of “Father Blake,” and Prof. Showaltcr’s lecture on “Fic- tion,” in which ho alluded to the flooded and sunny genialities of Dick- ens, Thaekory and other well-known authors.
