Trip # 1818 Morocco Trek and Sights March 2 – March 18, 2018 Morocco remains exotic and unknown to most Americans, yet is a place of striking beauty and culture with winding alleys, rich beaches, flavorful cuisine, and spectacular scenery and hiking. This 17-day trip offers 12 people the opportunity to experience some of Morocco’s most spectacular hiking and scenery. The trip includes a hiking trek across the Anti-Atlas Mountains covering 90 miles in eight days. Mules carry our gear, and muleteers set up our tents and cook the food, while we carry day packs. We trek through rocky passes and canyons with wide open expansive views, fantastic rock formations, remote Berber villages, friendly locals, black starlit nights and authentic Moroccan food. The terrain is gentler than the mountains of the Northeast U.S. Trails are generally good, less because they are well maintained than because they don’t have to deal with a lot of precipitation. We are away from civilization for eight days, however, averaging 11 miles a day, in 5-7 hours, and eating and sleeping on the ground in a very dry, rocky environment. Before the trek, we spend 1 night in Casablanca and 2 nights as more conventional tourists in legendary Marrakech. After the trek, we move to the Atlantic coast spending 2 nights in the charming old city of Essaouira. Participants must have previous hiking experience at the intermediate level or higher. Hiking will be at a moderate pace, however, this is not a trip for beginners, for someone who has not hiked in several years, for someone who has never hiked several consecutive days, or for someone who is not already in shape when we leave the U.S. Estimated cost is $1,575 plus airfare (est $700 - $1,000), including group ground transportation, accommodations, and most meals. For a prospectus with complete information, itinerary, equipment list, and how to apply, contact leaders Jeanne Blauner ([email protected], 978-202-5606) or Joan Wu Chambers ([email protected]).
