Trinity Sunday

Second Sunday of Easter April 12, 2015

CELEBRATION OF THE LORDS DAY

In consideration of other worshipers, please turn cell phones and mobile devices off or to silent mode. Thank you.

WE GATHER IN GODS PRESENCE

MUSIC FOR THE GATHERING OF THE WORSHIPERS

That Easter Day with Joy was Bright arr. Dale Wood

(lighting of the candles, Max Hagel, acolyte)

As the pastor and acolyte enter the sanctuary, let us pause in thoughtful silence and begin our worship.

OUR LIFE TOGETHER

(During the announcements, please fill out the fellowship pad and pass it back and forth through your pew in order that we may greet one another by name after worship.)

GATHERING SONG (congregation and choir singing together twice)

Alleluia, alleluia! Give thanks to the risen Lord.

Alleluia, alleluia! Give praise to His Name.

CALL TO WORSHIP: (based on Psalm 133) Cyndi Lorenc, Liturgist

One: How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!

All: When we gather together - as sisters and brothers,

regardless of our differences - the Almighty Lord smiles with joy.

One: It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard,

on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.

All: Our willingness to break bread with one another seals our identities in Christ

and marks us for service in the priesthood of all believers.

One: It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion.

All: When we come together - even when we struggle to see eye-to-eye -

our testimony to Gods grace flows out into the world for all to witness.

One: For there the Lord ordained Gods blessing, life forevermore.

All: The gift of abundant life starts here and now, as we worship God together!

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION & ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Liturgist

One: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins

and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8-9)

In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God.

All: Holy God, even as we ask you for forgiveness, we confess that we are

reluctant to offer forgiveness to others. We confess that we hold on to grudges as though they were precious jewels, not wanting to admit that they are really millstones hung around our necks. Change our hearts, O Lord. Open our eyes to recognize the futility of holding on to the sins we see in ourselves and others. Teach us to forgive as you forgive - freely and without condition. Help us, we pray, in the name of Christ.

One: Hear the good news. We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ

the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only

but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:1-2)

My brothers and sisters in Christ we are forgiven.

All: Thanks be to God.

*RESPONSE: (congregation and choir singing together)

Dont be afraid, my love is stronger, my love is stronger than your fear.

Dont be afraid, my love is stronger and I have promised,

promised to be always near.

*PASSING THE PEACE

WE GROW AS WE LISTEN TO GODS WORD

ANTHEM - These Things Did Thomas Count as Real

Thomas H. Troeger/arr. Eklanah Kelsay Dare

These things did Thomas count as real: the warmth of blood, the chill of steel,

The grain of wood, the heft of stone, the last frail twitch of blood and bone.

The vision of his skeptic mind was keen enough to make him blind

To any unexpected act too large for his small world of fact.

His reasoned certainties denied that one could live when one had died,

Until his fingers read like Braille the marking of the spear and nail.

May we, O God, by grace believe and thus the risen Christ receive,

Whose raw imprinted hands reached out and beckoned Thomas from his doubt.

READING: John 20:19-31 Page 115 in the pew Bibles (N.T.)

SERMON The Reverend Robert J. Hagel

*HYMN OF THE DAY No. 399 We Walk by Faith and Not by Sight Dunlaps Creek

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: Apostles Creed

One: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say:

All: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, Gods only Son, our Lord.

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
