INSIDE

Join Us for a “Walk Along” Ancient Camino Pilgrimage

During the last Glacial Age, our ancestors who resided in the Iberian Peninsula carried their dead to the westernmost point in Europe - Finisterre, "the end of the world," where the sun sets over the Atlantic. After the glaciers retreated, people moved north of the Pyrenees and settled in what became France, Germany, and Scandinavia. But they continued to take their dead to this rocky coastal point for thousands of years. When the bones of St. James (one of three Apostles buried in Europe) were discovered near Finisterre, this same path became a primary pilgrimage destination for Christians. It is known as the Camino de Santiago de Compostela and is still walked by hundreds of thousands of people each year. Marilyn Clark and Pastor Lou have both walked this ancient road. After worship on Sunday, May 19, they will offer an adult forum in the chapel on the practice of pilgrimage. They will share their experiences along the Camino, and show some pictures of the way. All are welcome!

Welcome Pastor Katy Warren! Pastor Katy Warren, associate pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa, will join us Sunday, May 5, to lead the worship service and preach in Pastor Lou's absence. A native of Papillion, Neb., Pastor Katy graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College and Lutheran Seminary, both in Minnesota. She completed her pastoral internship at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mesa, Ariz., and participated in the St. Paul/Lily Foundation pastoral residency program at St. Paul Lutheran Church from 2011-2013. She joined the St. Paul staff as associate pastor in 2014. Pastor Katy is the daughter of Trinity Lutheran members Dan and Jane Warren.

Structured Conversations Series Begins This Month You are invited to participate in four structured conversations toward preparing to call a new pastor.

Pastoral Team Update for May Now that we are on the other side of Easter, there are many new things to look forward to in the life of Trinity. Sometimes the work of the church feels as if it takes an eternity but look how far we’ve come since last September! It’s a new season for the transition and we hope that you are excited about its possibilities.

Baptismal Renewal Thank you to everyone who participated in the

catechumenate during Lent to reflect on the gift and call of Holy Baptism. May we all continue to explore and expand the new life that we share through these refreshing waters.

Staff Position Searches We are pleased to welcome Trinity’s new Office Assistant, Jacob Gasho. He is an excellent addition to our staff. We think he is doing a wonderful job and if you haven't met him, please take the time to introduce yourself.

The search committee is currently still seeking candidates for the Children and Youth position. When the position was fir st posted, it didn’t prompt a very strong response. This led to a revaluation of the job description, and it is in the process of being reposted. We know the right candidate is out there and we ask you to include this in your prayers.

Structured Conversations Late spring and early summer will bring exciting things. We'll be having a series of structured conversations on Sundays after church and again on Wednesday evenings toward calling new pastoral leadership. The Pastoral Team felt our communal conversation concerning the change in time for services was so successful that we'd like to continue with the format. You will find detailed information about these structured conversations elsewhere in this newsletter.

Call Committee Finally, what you've been waiting for is coming soon. We anticipate that the Council will be inviting nominations for the Call Committee in June and selecting the seven voting members, plus an alternate or two, in July. Be thinking and praying about who you think might be called to serve. As always, it's a privilege to serve you. Thank you for having us be a part of your community for this season.

Easter Blessings from Pastor Jess, Pastor Lou, and Pastor Michael!

Meet Our New Trinity Staff Members

Hello, my name is Jacob Gasho and I’m the new office secretary. I recently graduated from KU with a degree in the visual arts. I’ve made paintings, drawings, videos, and music; but right now I’ve focused on making music more than anything. I’m originally from Wichita, Kan., and didn’t move to Lawrence until I started going to school here about two years ago. I also practice Zen Buddhism down at the Kansas Zen Center which is only a few minutes away from your guy’s church.

Greetings to the Trinity Lutheran community! While I’ve had the good pleasure of meeting a number of you in person, there are still many I’ve yet to introduce myself to… My name is Maggie Werth, and I’m delighted to be joining you all as your new choir director! I am originally from Topeka, Kan., where I grew up playing piano, organ, and singing in a wonderful parish children’s choir program, the Most Pure Heart of Mary Schola Cantorum, where I later acted as choral scholar/intern in high-school, as well as on and off during my college career. I’m currently a student at the University of Kansas pursuing a Bachelor’s of Music Performance in organ and church music with Dr. Michael Bauer, and have had several wonderful opportunities to work in the field of church music throughout my studies. These include positions as organist at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in KCMO, and most recently as choir director at Holy Family Catholic Church in Eudora, Kan. I am excited to bring my work and experience to Trinity Lutheran alongside my friend and colleague from the KU organ department, Megan McCoy. I look forward to getting to know you all, and anticipate with much excitement the wonderful music making and memories to come!

Please note: Maggie will have her junior organ recital Sunday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m., in Bales Recital Hall on the KU west campus, 1600 Stewart.

Stephen Ministers bring distinctively Christian care to those in need! They use both words and deeds to express Christ’s care for others. When was the last time someone really listened to you? We’re talking about undistracted, full attention kind of listening. That’s one of the ways Stephen Minister care for others! Are you searching for a new ministry opportunity in our congregation? Stephen Ministry is our congregation’s one-to-one caring ministry and right now we are looking for members who are willing to pay the cost — Commitment Of Self and Time — remembering that the blessings will outweigh the costs! Stephen Ministers share the warmth of God’s love with those who need it most, those who may be making a long journey through the valley of a life crisis. Is God calling you to reach out to those who are hurting? Please begin praying and considering serving as a Stephen Minister. We hope to begin a training class in the fall. For more information, contact one of the Stephen Leaders —

Monthly Update From Interfaith Food Pantry Trinity Interfaith Food Pantry (TIFP) was open nine days in March, serving 240 households (including 188 children, 454 adults, 32 senior adults) Of these, 21 new households enrolled for food assistance in March. In March, total expense for food purchased locally and through Harvesters was $1,225.85. Total retail equivalent value of all food provided (food donated and purchased for the 240 families in March) was $5,508. TIFP was grateful for about 2,000 items/canned food donated by the Boy Scouts “Scouting for Food” food drive held Saturday, April 6. Six TIFP volunteers collected the food

and brought it to TIFP that day where it is currently being organized and shelved in the pantry. They are grateful to the Boy Scouts and their food drive, and all of the partner churches and individuals for donations of food and money to purchase food for the pantry patrons who are in need of food assistance in Lawrence and Douglas County. The mobile food pantry is on the fourth Saturday of each month at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold. It serves about 225 families each month. Several food pantry volunteers, along with individuals from Trinity Episcopal and other friends, join First Baptist, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, the Salvation Army, and community groups meeting those Saturdays from 1-2 p.m. At Trinity Lutheran, put food donations under the large table in the narthex. Or make monetary donations to Trinity Lutheran with “Food Pantry” on the memo line, and we’ll see that it gets to the TIFP.
